SBP’s Currency Design Competition Unleashes The Humor In Pakistanis

Source: GNN

Get ready to witness a burst of creativity as the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) kickstarts the process for a brand new banknote series. In an exciting move, an Art Competition has been organized to infuse innovation and thematic richness into the designs. This is not just a competition but an opportunity for local artists, designers, and art students to leave an indelible mark on the visual identity of Pakistan’s currency.

The canvas is wide open for participants with themes ranging from social and cultural identities to demographic diversity, climate change, economic development, natural landscapes, architectural heritage, and national symbols. The SBP encourages artists to think outside the box, urging them to bring forth novel designs that encapsulate the essence of these diverse themes.

Submission Details

Artists can let their imaginations soar by submitting designs for all seven existing denominations or fewer based on their preference. The designs should be presented in hard copy on white paper accompanied by a concise write-up of no more than a hundred words in either English or Urdu, explaining the design and its thematic significance.

Adding a vibrant touch to the competition, the SBP emphasizes that the colors of each banknote denomination should be unique and easily distinguishable. This not only enhances visual appeal but also ensures clarity in identifying different denominations.

Jury’s Role and Lucrative Rewards

A panel of esteemed artists will form the jury, tasked with evaluating the submitted designs. The top six designs for each denomination will be recommended to the SBP for the final selection. The stakes are high, with hefty cash prizes awaiting the winners – Rs.1,000,000/-, Rs.500,000/-, and Rs.300,000/- for the first, second, and third designs of each denomination, respectively.

Legalities and Exclusivity

Participants are reminded to ensure that their designs are free from copyright claims or any liabilities. The submitted designs become the sole property of the SBP. Allowing the institution the liberty to share or modify the designs for the purpose of banknote production. Without any extra compensation to the designers.

While the SBP is eager to see the public’s creativity, certain individuals, including members of the Jury, SBP, and its subsidiaries’ employees, along with their family members, are not eligible to participate. The goal is to maintain a fair and unbiased competition.

Got Questions?

For those itching to clarify doubts or seek more information, the SBP opens the doors of communication at banknotes@sbp.org.pk. It’s a chance to dive deep into the intricacies of the competition and ensure that every participant is well-informed and ready to unleash their artistic brilliance.

So, if you’re an artist ready to make your mark on the visual narrative of Pakistan’s currency. Gear up, paint your ideas, and submit them to the Director, Finance Department, State Bank of Pakistan, I.I. Chundrigar Road, Karachi, by 11th March 2024. The canvas is yours, and the nation is eager to see the masterpiece you create. May the most imaginative designs grace the future of Pakistan’s banknotes!

Former Pakistan all-rounder Imad Wasim has broken his silence regarding the possibility of a ‘u-turn’ from his decision to retire from international cricket.

Imad Wasim shocked the cricketing world with his sudden retirement in November last year, however, his latest comments have hinted towards a potential comeback in the future.

In a candid conversation with a local news outlet, Imad reaffirmed his commitment to the retirement decision while leaving the door slightly ajar for a potential return if the need arises for Pakistan.

“The decision I made to retire was one I stood by completely. However, in cricket, you never know when your country might call upon you again. In such situations, one must be ready to step up,” Imad stated.

Although he hinted at his comeback, he also expressed the desire for clarity from the team management beforehand. He emphasized the importance of understanding his role as a senior player and the team’s cricketing philosophy moving forward.

“What I want to know is about clarity — it’s about giving me responsibility, not as a captain but as a senior player, to take the team where I want to or where a group of senior players wants to take it,” he explained.

In his apology video, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan expressed remorse, stating, “I, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, offer my sincere apology today for my actions. Iftikhar Ahmed Issues Apology To Asad Shafiq After Fiery On-Field Exchange

Pakistan’s cricketing arena witnessed an ugly on-field drama during the Sindh Premier League (SPL) as all-rounder Iftikhar Ahmed found himself embroiled in a heated altercation with former cricketer Asad Shafiq.

Shafiq, who is known for his composure also lost his cool and responded to Ahmed in the same way, resulting in some unpleasant moments on the field.

However, the all-rounder later realized his mistake and expressed regret over his conduct, acknowledging the need for restraint in the heat of competition. He took to his official X (formerly Twitter) and issued a public apology to the former Test batter.

“I am extremely apologetic for my behaviour in the field today. I shouldn’t have reacted the way I did in the heat of the moment. I’ve apologised to @asadshafiq1986
Bhai in person after the match & have always held great regards for him. We have played a lot of cricket together,” his post read.

For the unversed, the incident unfolded during the 12th fixture of the SPL when Karachi Ghazi’s Iftikhar Ahmed dismissed Larkana Challengers’ Asad Shafiq in the eighth over of the 161-run chase.

A video circulating on social media captured the tense moment as Iftikhar indulged in an animated celebration aimed at Asad, triggering an immediate response from the seasoned batter.

As tensions escalated, both players engaged in an ill-mannered verbal exchange, prompting intervention from umpires and teammates to diffuse the situation.

Despite the on-field confrontation, Iftikhar Ahmed did not lose concentration from the match as his stellar performance led Karachi Ghazis to emerge victorious.

The right-handed batter showcased his prowess with a gritty half-century, steering his team out of adversity, while also making significant contributions with the ball, claiming three crucial wickets.

The Bollywood film ‘Fighter’ is experiencing a downturn in box office revenue following its ban in Gulf countries, including the UAE.

According to a report from the India showbiz news agency Men’s XP, the movie had a strong start, bagging INR 24 crore on its opening day. The momentum continued, reaching INR 41.20 crores on the second day. However, the trend took a sharp turn on Monday, with earnings plummeting to just INR 7-8 crores.

Rahat Fateh Faces FIA Inquiry Over Money Laundering Post Violence

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in Pakistan has initiated an investigation into Ustad Rahat Fateh Ali Khan for alleged money laundering and tax evasion. This comes after reports surfaced indicating that the singer earned nearly eight billion Rupees for 12 years from concerts both locally and internationally.

The Pakistani tax authorities’ decision to probe Khan coincides with the musician facing scrutiny over a video showing him physically assaulting one of his band members in a dispute over a missing bottle of liquor. The video of the assault has garnered widespread shock and attention globally.

As per reports, FIA has requested FBR to provide the complete record of Rahat’s assets and income tax. This isn’t the first time the singer has faced issues with the FIA and the FBR, but the current allegations are notably serious. Sources from the FBR have stated that the singer’s tax payment record bears no resemblance whatsoever to his actual income.

The FIA’s actions were prompted by revelations from Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s former global promoter, Salman Ahmed, who disclosed that the singer had earned approximately eight billion Rupees over 12 years under his management. This included over $22 million from international tours and over PKR 1.3 billion from concerts in Pakistan. Ahmed also stated his willingness to provide comprehensive evidence, including audit trails and financial data, to both the FIA and the FBR.

CSS 2022 Exam Under Scrutiny for Answer Sheet Swap

FIA has registered FIR on CSS exams

An FIR has been filed by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) concerning allegations of answer book substitution in the Central Superior Services (CSS) 2022 examination. The FIR targets an official from the Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC), along with two candidates and an additional individual. These people have been accused of handling the answer book replacement scheme for illegal gains totaling more than Rs. 1 million.

CSS exam and replacing answer sheets

A High Profile Crime At CSS

The investigation stemmed from a complaint by Unsar Hayat Gonsdal, Director General (Administration) at FPSC, leading to Enquiry No. 322/2023. During the CSS 2022 examination’s interview phase, anomalies surfaced when certain candidates exhibited remarkable written performance but failed during the viva section. It can certainly bring about suspicion if a candidate has written something well but is lacking the knowledge to talk on those same subjects they have written on.

An internal fact-finding committee comprising of, Syed Ahmed Babur Zaidi, Zaheer Parvaiz Khan, Akbar Hussain Durrani, conducted an inquiry, implicating Nadeem Mohammad Khan, an Assistant at the FPSC’s Secrecy Branch, for substituting answer books. It seems that a thorough investigation did lead to a person responsible for replacing the answer books.

Every Action Has Consequences

The individual in question was determined to have replaced Ali Sher and Halar Ahmed’s genuine answer books with modified versions, in collaboration with Muhammad Ibrahim, in exchange for a financial reward totaling Rs. 1 million. It’s worth mentioning that the serial numbers on twenty-four answer books didn’t match those documented on the examination hall attendance sheets.

Additionally, twenty-two of these books were not officially designated by the examination cell for use in the CSS 2022 centers. As we can see, the act of cheating or manipulation can extend to examination systems as high as the CSS one.

Dean Elgar Makes Shocking Claims About Virat Kohli

Former South African captain Dean Elgar recently unveiled a startling revelation about an intense on-field encounter with India’s cricketing icon Virat Kohli, shedding light on a dramatic on-field rivalry.

In a recent podcast appearance, Elgar recounted a fiery exchange with Kohli during South Africa’s tour of India in 2015, where tensions escalated to an unexpected level. Elgar vividly described how he confronted Kohli after allegedly being spat at during a Test match.

“I came in to bat, and I was holding my own against Ashwin and Jadeja,” Elgar recalled. “Kohli spat at me, and I said to him, ‘If you do that again I’ll f***g ps [a South African profanity meaning hit] you with this bat. I will absolutely knock you out on this field,” he recounted, highlighting the intensity of the moment.

South Africa’s AB de Villiers, a teammate of Kohli at IPL franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore and mutual friend of both men, intervened to settle their differences.

“Anyway, so, realized that de Villiers found out what he did and went up to him and said: ‘bud, why are you spitting at my teammate bud? That’s not on’.

Elgar also revealed that years later in a surprising turn of events, Kohli extended an olive branch, inviting Elgar for drinks to apologize for his earlier actions.

“And two years later, he (Kohli) calls me aside playing (in) South Africa and said: ‘Can we go have a drink at the end of the series? I want to just apologize for my actions’,” Elgar recounted, reflecting on Kohli’s gesture of reconciliation.

Notably, Elgar recently retired from international cricket after South Africa’s two-Test series at home against India.

Alex Hales Hails Azam Khan As The Best Hitter In The World

alex-hales-hails-azam-khan-as-the-best-hitter-in-the-world

Former England cricketer Alex Hales has heaped praise on Pakistan’s dynamic wicket-keeper batter, Azam Khan, hailing him as arguably the most destructive hitter in the world.

Hales has shared the dressing room with Azam Khan as part of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Islamabad United, as well as Desert Vipers in the ongoing ILT20.

The former England opener has expressed deep-rooted admiration for Azam’s exceptional talent, emphasizing his prowess in the shortest format of the game.

According to Hales, Azam’s remarkable form over the past few years has solidified his reputation as a powerhouse in cricketing circles.

“I think he’s brilliant. He’s one of the best hitters, and strikers of a cricket ball I’ve played with. He’s absolutely brilliant. His form in the last couple of years has been really good. He’s a great guy to have in your team. Really nice guy,” remarked Hales.

Source: X (formerly Twitter)

Addressing concerns about Azam’s fitness following a recent run-out incident, Hales remained unfazed, attributing such occurrences to the unpredictable nature of cricket.

Despite the setback, Hales emphasized Azam’s exceptional ability and talent, underscoring his bright future in the sport.

“He got run out today, but those things happen in cricket. I nearly got run out as well. It’s one of those things, but you can’t knock back his ability and talent,” said Hales.

“The way he hits the ball is second to none. And I think he’s got a really bright future ahead of him. He’s a brilliant player,” he further added.

Azam Khan faced massive criticism during Pakistan’s T20I series against New Zealand earlier this month for his below-par fitness level and batting performance. He managed scores of 10, 2, 10 in three matches he played.

Currently representing Desert Vipers in the ongoing ILT20 2024, Azam Khan continues to showcase his explosive batting skills alongside fellow Pakistani players Shaheen Afridi, Shadab Khan, and Mohammad Amir.

If Anything Happens To Me, Rabia Anam is Responsible: Satti

Television anchor Ashfaque Satti addressed the allegations of domestic abuse for the first time on Tuesday, responding to the accusations in an official video message. In the seven-minute address, Satti attributed the threats he has been receiving to what he termed as one-sided analysis by Rabia Anam regarding the allegations made by his wife.

Acknowledging the complexity of relationships, Satti emphasized that disagreements between spouses are not uncommon, characterizing his dispute with his wife as a private matter that was unnecessarily sensationalized to tarnish his reputation. He expressed disappointment at the public scrutiny his personal life has endured, particularly on social media platforms.

Satti described himself as an “innocent person” while lamenting the intrusion into his personal affairs. He urged for a cessation of what he referred to as a media trial, emphasizing the ongoing police investigation and the need to uphold the integrity of the legal process.

Satti further addressed the demand from his second wife, Nomaika, for a divorce from his third wife, describing it as akin to blackmail. He criticized Rabia Anum for her personal criticism, expressing dismay that she hadn’t reached out to him before making statements against him. Satti also highlighted the distressing impact of Anum’s comments, noting threatening phone calls received by himself, his wife, and children, and holding Anum accountable for any harm that may befall his family.

The controversy stemmed from former news anchor Rabia Anam’s public account on social media, detailing allegations of domestic abuse and violence against a woman named Nomaika, who accused Satti of confinement, physical assault, and threats on her life. Anam shared images of Nomaika’s injuries and recounted her ordeal, prompting a wave of public discourse on the issue of domestic violence.

Amid the unfolding narrative, TV anchor Kiran Naz offered an alternative perspective, asserting that there are always two sides to a story. Naz shared Satti’s version of events, suggesting that Nomaika’s injuries resulted from a physical altercation initiated by her own behavior.

An exchange between Anam and Naz ensued, with Anam maintaining that nothing justifies the alleged brutality inflicted upon Nomaika.

In response to the controversy, ARY News, where Satti was formerly employed, took a decisive stance, condemning abusive behavior and announcing Satti’s suspension pending the outcome of the investigation. The network underscored its commitment to a zero-tolerance policy against violence or threats of violence, whether in the workplace or domestic sphere.

Shahid Afridi Advocates for Long-Term Captaincy in Pakistan Cricket

shahid-afridi-unhappy-babar-azam-shaheen-afridi

Former captain Shahid Afridi has advocated for a more stable approach to captaincy in Pakistan cricket, urging the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to appoint a long-term captain.

In a recent media interaction during a Sports Academy project, the former allrounder emphasized the need for the PCB to appoint a captain for an extended tenure, spanning two to three years.

“PCB should announce the captain for two to three years so that the captaincy debate can come to an end,” said Afridi.

Afridi believes that such a move would effectively quell the ongoing debate and conflicts in the team surrounding the captaincy, fostering stability and continuity within the team.

Source: Cricinfo

Afridi also proposed the elimination of the vice-captaincy role across all formats for the Men in Green. According to him, in the absence of the captain, the responsibility should naturally shift to a player deemed suitable for the task at hand, eliminating the need for a designated vice-captain.

“There is no need to appoint anyone as vice-captain. If the captain is not available for any reason, assign the captaincy responsibility to a player who seems suitable,” he added.

His comments came in the light of the fact that Shaheen Afridi was handed T20I captaincy only until the upcoming T20I World Cup, with Mohammad Rizwan as his deputy.

Shahid Afridi also asserted his weight behind Mohammad Hafeez, stating that he should be given more time in his role as Pakistan’s team director.

“[Mohammad] Hafeez has played a lot of cricket, he should be given more time [as team director],” said Afridi. “If someone thinks that everything will change in one series, it is wrong thinking.”

Notably, Mohammad Hafeez replaced Mickey Arthur as the director of the Pakistan cricket team in November last year.

Which Team Made The Most Of PSL Supplementary Draft?

which-team-made-the-most-of-psl-supplementary-draft

The supplementary draft of the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) took place over a conference call yesterday, with each franchise picking replacement players for their injured or partially available players.

Local players like Haider Ali, Arshad Iqbal, and Zahid Mehmood were roped in by Islamabad United, Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings respectively, after being ignored in the initial PSL Draft. However, seasoned campaigners Ahmad Shahzad and Sharjeel Khan once again failed to attract the franchises.

Multan Sultans is the only franchise that is not facing the headache of their player’s availability, resulting in their absence from the replacement draft.

They picked hard-hitting West Indies batter, Johnson Charles and the exciting 19-year-old Muhammad Shahzad as supplementary picks.

Let’s take a look at which teams made the best decisions to bolster their squads during the PSL 9 supplementary draft.

Peshawar Zalmi

The Zalmis made the most out of the supplementary draft, picking some amazing bowlers to compliment their strong batting line-up.

They roped in Afghanistan spinner Waqar Salamkheil and English pace bowler Gus Atkinson to replace Lungi Ngidi and Noor Ahmad for the whole season. They later revealed West Indies pace sensation Shamar Joseph as Atkinson’s partial replacement and Arshad Iqbal as Khurram Shahzad’s replacement.

Zalmi reserved their pick for Naveen-ul-Haq while England’s Luke Wood and local left-arm spinner Sufyan Muqeem were picked as supplementary players.

Islamabad United

Islamabad United reserved their pick for the marquee player Sam Curran, who is out for the whole season. However, they picked hard-hitting batter Haider Ali and West Indian pace bowler Obed McCoy, who is a mainstay in league cricket.

Haider Ali’s acquisition raised some eyebrows considering his bad form in the past few seasons. Although he possesses the talent to turn games on its head but needs the right mentorship.

Lahore Qalandars

Lahore Qalandars faced a major setback as they lost star Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan due to an injury. They reserved their picks for Rashid Khan as well as Dan Lawrence, who will be partially unavailable.

They picked explosive Sri Lankan batter Bhanuka Rajapaksa, along with Tayyab Abbas from their Player Development Program (PDP) as supplementary picks.

Karachi Kings

Karachi Kings opted for local leg-spinner Zahid Mehmood to replace their Platinum pick Kieron Pollard, who is partially available. They have reserved their pick for Tim Seifert, who will be available after the conclusion of the New Zealand T20Is.

They roped in English middle-order batter Leus De Plooy, who is known for his aggressive batting, along with 21-year-old Mohammad Rohid as their supplementary players.

Quetta Gladiators

The most shocking decision came from the team which has been at the bottom for the past few seasons. The Gladiators announced 33-year-old wicket-keeper Bismillah Khan as a partial replacement for Sri Lankan star allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga.

However, to balance that mind-boggling decision, they picked an aggressive top-order batter from England, Laurie Evans in the supplementary pick while reserving one pick for later.

Netizens React To The Picture

Fans and netizens while agreeing on the fact that both the cricketer and the bride resemble each other, also questioned if a few similar features can easily take away from being someone’s doppelganger. A unibrow doesn’t mean that both people look the same, fans noted. Meanwhile, others wondered if the mere resemblance was because of the bridal makeover and nothing else.
