The supplementary draft of the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) took place over a conference call yesterday, with each franchise picking replacement players for their injured or partially available players.

Local players like Haider Ali, Arshad Iqbal, and Zahid Mehmood were roped in by Islamabad United, Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings respectively, after being ignored in the initial PSL Draft. However, seasoned campaigners Ahmad Shahzad and Sharjeel Khan once again failed to attract the franchises.

Multan Sultans is the only franchise that is not facing the headache of their player’s availability, resulting in their absence from the replacement draft.

They picked hard-hitting West Indies batter, Johnson Charles and the exciting 19-year-old Muhammad Shahzad as supplementary picks.

Let’s take a look at which teams made the best decisions to bolster their squads during the PSL 9 supplementary draft.

Peshawar Zalmi

The Zalmis made the most out of the supplementary draft, picking some amazing bowlers to compliment their strong batting line-up.

They roped in Afghanistan spinner Waqar Salamkheil and English pace bowler Gus Atkinson to replace Lungi Ngidi and Noor Ahmad for the whole season. They later revealed West Indies pace sensation Shamar Joseph as Atkinson’s partial replacement and Arshad Iqbal as Khurram Shahzad’s replacement.

Zalmi reserved their pick for Naveen-ul-Haq while England’s Luke Wood and local left-arm spinner Sufyan Muqeem were picked as supplementary players.

Islamabad United

Islamabad United reserved their pick for the marquee player Sam Curran, who is out for the whole season. However, they picked hard-hitting batter Haider Ali and West Indian pace bowler Obed McCoy, who is a mainstay in league cricket.

Haider Ali’s acquisition raised some eyebrows considering his bad form in the past few seasons. Although he possesses the talent to turn games on its head but needs the right mentorship.

Lahore Qalandars

Lahore Qalandars faced a major setback as they lost star Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan due to an injury. They reserved their picks for Rashid Khan as well as Dan Lawrence, who will be partially unavailable.

They picked explosive Sri Lankan batter Bhanuka Rajapaksa, along with Tayyab Abbas from their Player Development Program (PDP) as supplementary picks.

Karachi Kings

Karachi Kings opted for local leg-spinner Zahid Mehmood to replace their Platinum pick Kieron Pollard, who is partially available. They have reserved their pick for Tim Seifert, who will be available after the conclusion of the New Zealand T20Is.

They roped in English middle-order batter Leus De Plooy, who is known for his aggressive batting, along with 21-year-old Mohammad Rohid as their supplementary players.

Quetta Gladiators

The most shocking decision came from the team which has been at the bottom for the past few seasons. The Gladiators announced 33-year-old wicket-keeper Bismillah Khan as a partial replacement for Sri Lankan star allrounder Wanindu Hasaranga.

However, to balance that mind-boggling decision, they picked an aggressive top-order batter from England, Laurie Evans in the supplementary pick while reserving one pick for later.
