Nose Picking Linked to Alzheimer’s Disease, Study

Source: Herald Sun

Did you know that picking your nose might increase your chances of developing Alzheimer’s disease? Yep, you read that right. According to a recent study, this seemingly harmless habit could have some not-so-harmless consequences for your brain health.

Beta-Amyloid in Alzheimer’s

Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive dementia characterized by the accumulation of beta-amyloid protein in the brain. And guess what? Picking your nose might be introducing pathogens into your system that trigger inflammation in the brain, leading to an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s.

The study suggests that beta-amyloid, the culprit behind Alzheimer’s, could actually be produced by the brain as a defense mechanism against these pathogens that find their way in through the nasal cavity. So, that innocent little nose-picking session could be setting off a chain reaction that eventually leads to cognitive decline.

The Hidden Dangers Lurking in Your Nose

But wait, there’s more. Viral, fungal, and bacterial infections have all been linked to Alzheimer’s disease. And where do these infections like to hang out? You guessed it — in your nose. These pathogens can lurk in the nasal epithelium for ages without causing any noticeable symptoms until they decide to make their grand entrance into your brain, wreaking havoc along the way.

Now, before you panic and swear off nose-picking forever, let’s talk about prevention. The report’s authors recommend ditching the finger-in-nose routine and opting for more hygienic practices like blowing your nose or using saline rinses. Sure, it might not be as satisfying as a good ol’ nose-pick, but it’s a small price to pay for preserving your cognitive function.

And hey, if you needed another reason to kick the habit, just think about all the other gross stuff lurking under your fingernails. Yuck!

Think Twice Before You Pick

Picking your nose might seem harmless, but it could have serious implications for your brain health down the line. So, the next time you feel the urge to go digging for gold, remember this study and reach for a tissue instead. Your brain will thank you later.

Which Areas Will Not Have Internet On Election Day?

With the upcoming general elections slated for February 8, there’s a buzz stirring in  as internet access is set to face restrictions in certain “sensitive areas.” According to the caretaker provincial Information Minister Jan Achakzai, this precautionary measure aims to thwart potential security threats posed by terrorists who might exploit social media platforms for nefarious purposes during the polling process.

The Decision Behind Internet Restrictions

In a statement shared on social media, Achakzai shed light on the decision to temporarily suspend internet services in regions like Turbat, Mach, and Chaman. The rationale behind this move is clear: to safeguard citizens and maintain peace and order during this critical juncture in the nation’s democratic journey.

However, as with any significant decision, this move has elicited a spectrum of reactions from the public. While some individuals empathize with the need for heightened security measures, others express concerns over the possible disruptions this internet blackout might bring. From hampering communication channels to impacting business operations and impeding access to vital information, the implications are far-reaching.

Critics Voice Concerns

Critics, in particular, raise valid questions regarding the potential stifling of the free flow of information and the risk of disenfranchising voters who rely on online platforms for election-related updates and civic engagement. In an era where digital connectivity plays an increasingly pivotal role in shaping public discourse and political participation, any curtailment of internet access inevitably raises eyebrows.

Court Intervention

Adding another layer to the debate, the Sindh High Court has weighed in by instructing the federal government and the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) to ensure uninterrupted internet access throughout the entire election period. This directive underscores the legal and logistical complexities surrounding the internet blackout in specific regions, sparking discussions about its enforceability and compliance with constitutional rights.

As Balochistan braces itself for the electoral showdown, the balancing act between security imperatives and democratic principles remains a delicate one. While the aim is to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process and protect citizens from potential harm, the challenge lies in finding a middle ground that upholds both security interests and fundamental rights, ensuring a fair and transparent election that reflects the will of the people.

While she is calling out the fashion shows in Pakistan, the same designer doesn’t bat an eye at foreign fashion shows where women are made to wear revealing clothes.

He further noted the designer’s efforts to spread awareness on the Palestinian matter, however, failed to raise her voice on subjective issues in Pakistan. While discussing the matter, Dr Affan further added, that in Pakistan every other person is Maria B. as people here have forgotten to match their words with their actions, be it politicians or government or private sectors.

India’s Jasprit Bumrah opened up about his cricketing inspiration, attributing his mastery of yorkers to the legendary Pakistani bowlers, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis.

He registered a match haul of nine wickets, leading India to a statement 106-run victory over England in the second Test of the five-match series.

Reflecting on his exceptional performance in India’s victory in Visakhapatnam, Bumrah reminisced about the decisive yorker that dismantled Ollie Pope’s stumps in the first innings.

Bumrah left Pope bewildered with a reverse-swinging yorker, sending his middle and leg stumps out flying out of the ground.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Bumrah shared insights into his cricketing journey, emphasizing the pivotal role of Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, and Zaheer Khan in shaping his bowling prowess.

“The yorker was the first delivery I learnt. While playing with the tennis ball, I learnt it. I saw on the television Waqar [Younis], Wasim [Akram], and Zaheer [Khan] execute it, and I learnt it,” Bumrah explained.

Remarkably, Bumrah emphasized that he no longer fixates on statistics, focusing instead on team victories. He acknowledged the weight of responsibility in guiding the younger players, underscoring his commitment to nurturing the next generation of cricketers.

“I don’t look at numbers. When I was young, I looked at numbers and got excited. But I don’t look at it now. It gives extra baggage. The important thing was to win, and I’m happy with it,” Bumrah affirmed.

Jasprit Bumrah also acknowledged his evolving role within the Indian pace attack. However, he does not consider himself the leader of the pack.

With the series levelled at 1-1, India and England will square off in the third Test at Rajkot’s Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium from February 15.

‘Fighter’ Director Blames Indians For Film’s Failure

The movie ‘Fighter,’ featuring Hrithik Roshan and Deepika Padukone, is facing hiccups at the box office even though it doesn’t have direct competition from other films. Director Siddharth Anand has recently commented on the film’s dull start. Needless to say, his statement has sparked a social media debate as fans

Siddharth Anand’s film Fighter premiered in theaters on Indian Republic Day. While the movie has achieved success at the box office, surpassing the Rs 150 crore milestone, its earnings fall short in comparison to its budget. The director has attributed the slow start to the film’s exploration of a unique and uncharted territory.

Here’s what he had to say in his latest interview regarding the sluggish achievement of the movie.

‘Fighter is a huge leap. As filmmakers do this in the country, and the kind of genre it is. It’s a space that is unexplored and new. It has no reference point for the audience, which means what they are seeing is a little, umm okay! Such big stars? A commercial director, accha ye planes kya kar rahi hai. I am like is this my film, I don’t know this.”

”If you realize, there is a huge percentage of our country. I would say 90 percent who have not flown in planes! Who has not been to an airport? So how do you expect them to know what’s happening in the air?” he added.

“This is my dissection. They felt like this was a little alien. How many percent of Indians? I mean this is a variation, for an academic discussion, how many of them have a passport? How many traveled in a plane? You are talking about the plane’s action. They have not understood what is the exhilaration that they are supposed to feel the action?”

Public’s Criticism Of Anand’s Statement

Siddharth Anand is under scrutiny for his explanation regarding the box office performance of Fighter. In response, a Twitter user criticized the director by comparing it to his 2023 blockbuster “Pathaan,” implying that the success of the latter was due to a large portion of the Indian audience being likened to RAW agents. “Pathaan” starred Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role as a spy.

Dubai Planning Ahead

When the place first came up with the concept of Palm island, people did not think it was even possible to create such a thing. Yet, today we see that marvel stretching across the body of water. Talking about the upcoming Dubai Creek tower, Alabbar shared insights at the Sharjah Entrepreneurship Festival, discussing the company’s decision to abandon a plan for a kilometer-long tower in favor of the Dubai Creek Tower.

He emphasized that the tower serves as the “female” counterpart to the Burj Khalifa, with its design representing the new downtown area. Alabbar reflected on the challenges of managing a publicly listed company, highlighting the need for transparency and discipline in handling public funds. Of course, when it comes to any form of development, the public should have full knowledge of where their funds are being allocated.

Karachi Suffers Once Again – Why Is There No Help?

700 feeders trip in Karachi rain

Whenever it pours in Karachi, there is one wish that is on the minds of every citizen; “Please don’t let it rain for too long’. Where there is rain, there also comes a plethora of issues like urban flooding, load shedding as well as other traffic issues. People are unable to reach home from their offices if it has been raining for the whole day. In many areas, it barely rains for more than half an hour and suddenly, there is no electricity.

Just two days ago, Karachi experienced one of its few winter rainfalls and it was quite heavier than most that the city experienced last year. Yes, the rain fell like a downpour and it poured for hours on end. In fact, it started the day prior at night and continued throughout the day. While it did leave a pleasant weather for people to enjoy, it also left 700 tripped feeders in its wake.

Did Karachi Citizens Get Help?

700 power feeders tripping is no small thing. A single feeder powers quite a lot and to have 700 of them tripped means that multiple areas are down. It rained for only a few hours and so much of the city electrical infrastructure went down? Not only that, but it could not even be turned on immediately. The authorities responsible were not seen anywhere, there was not a hint of help for the people of Karachi.

If the feeders are tripped, then the first priority of the authorities is to make sure that the area is clear of any water. The feeders cannot be turned back on until and unless the area is safe to turn on, and there are no safety measures in place. Roads with impractical drainage designs or no drainage causes flooding and eventually, electricity shutdown. Turning the feeders back on is one thing, but there were no authorities out there that were working to clear the water.

The City Feels A Lot

It is true that Karachi always feel the blunt end of any situation when it comes to rain or any natural disaster. We believe that the respective authorities must work harder to have counter measures in place. There is no excuse for the damage that the rain causes here in Karachi, and the rain is not at fault here. It is up to us to have a sustaining and practical infrastructure for the rain itself.

Islamabad Metro Halts: Can Pakistan Ever Sustain Operations?

Islamabad metro gone and now what

There are times when the people of Pakistan feel hopeful at seeing some form of development in the country. When Uber and Careem were first introduced in Pakistan, it was like a change of pace for the people. They did not have to spend time arguing with taxi and Rickshaw drivers to set a common fare. However, with time, we did see rises and declines of Careem, and now Bykea and inDrive lead the charge. Similarly, the Metro bus service that was launched in Islamabad started out quite well.

To have premium feeling buses running the track all day and picking and dropping people timely seemed like a dream come true. It was not until many years later when Karachi also got a taste of the Red Bus service, followed by many more under construction. However, it seems that the Metro service in Islamabad/Rawalpindi has closed down permanently. Yes, it is now closed for good, which begs the question; can anything survive in Pakistan?

Pakistan and services that run more

Metro And Other Developments

There was a time when a new bus service was launched in Karachi many years ago. The buses that run those routes and service were given the name of ‘UTS’. However, we saw that the service could not survive for more than a few months or years, due to the people having issues with it. The local bus groups also had issues with it, thus why the buses were damaged and taken out of commission.

Similarly, extracurricular attractions in Karachi have not lasted long either. There used to be wildlife present inside Safari Park, there were healthy animals in Karachi zoo. Now, both the places feel deserted. The negligence towards any development in the country has been quite high, leading to nothing lasting in the place for too long. Does that mean we are doomed to fail in no matter what development we do?

how has Karachi evolved in sustaining things

There Is Some Hope

The current Red bus service in Karachi is seeing good days and has not seen any conflict of any kind since it was launched. The service must be doing something good because otherwise, it would have closed down by now. Similarly, the Bykea service is holding strong. The Magnifiscience center established by the Dawood foundation is also going strong. Other than that, Port Grand has not seen any adversity in all its time here.

Thus, this tells us that is there is definitely hope for development in the country, especially in Karachi. We hope that we are introduced to more developments, starting with the completion of the Hyderabad-Sukkur motorway.

PIA’s Debt To Become A Public Burden?

Source: Daily City News

The Pakistani government, in collaboration with commercial banks, has agreed on a Rs268 billion debt restructuring plan for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). While this move aims to facilitate the airline’s privatization, it significantly shifts the financial burden onto taxpayers. The Ministry of Finance, reversing its earlier stance, now commits to making principal and interest payments from the national budget.

Terms of the Agreement

Under the agreement, the government plans to utilize PIA sale proceeds for principal payments, resorting to the national budget if the funds fall short. In return, banks accept a 10-year debt rollover with a hefty 12% annual interest rate. Leading to Rs32.2 billion in annual interest payments. This means banks stand to receive Rs322 billion in interest payments over the next decade, surpassing their outstanding stocks of Rs268 billion. The grand total at a 12% interest rate is projected to reach Rs572 billion in 10 years.

IMF and Board of Directors to Weigh In

To implement this significant financial shift, the Ministry of Finance is set to seek the endorsement of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Given the implications on the national budget. Concurrently, banks will present the plan to their respective board of directors for approval. The sudden change in the ministry’s stance leaves many wondering about the circumstances that prompted this shift.

While this debt restructuring alleviates the financial strain on PIA and streamlines its privatization process. Concerns linger about potential delays. The finance ministry’s decision to stop interest payments on PIA debt in March 2023 prompted a search for privatization options. The agreed-upon restructuring, with the finance ministry taking ownership of the debt. Addresses a major hurdle for the airline, removing a substantial monthly charge from its balance sheet.

Privatization Challenges Remain

Despite reaching an agreement on this critical issue, PIA is still far from privatization. With a total outstanding debt of Rs825 billion, the airline, along with the Privatization Ministry, needs no objection certificates from the Civil Aviation Authority and Federal Board of Revenue to proceed with filing a scheme of arrangement with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

While the government acceded to some demands, rejecting others put forth by the banks, the path to PIA’s privatization remains complicated. The banks’ requests for considering PIA debt as eligible for Capital Requirement Regulations (CRR) and deferring tax payments on their earnings were turned down. The uncertainty surrounding the privatization process persists, making it a challenging journey for all stakeholders involved.

8 Out Of 10 Adults Use Toilets As Garbage Bins, Study

Source: The Hill

We’ve all been there – tossing things down the toilet without giving it a second thought. A recent survey by StudyFinds reveals that a whopping 8 in 10 adults have flushed items down the toilet that really should have found their way to the trash. From hair to cigarette butts to cooking grease, it seems like our toilets are doubling as garbage cans. But the consequences of these seemingly harmless actions may be more significant than we realize.

What Goes Down the Drain?

The study, which included 2,000 adults, found some surprising culprits. About 21 percent of respondents admitted to disposing of hair in their toilets, while 27 percent of women confessed to flushing tampons. Animal waste, cigarette butts, makeup, medicine, and even solid objects down street drains made the list of bathroom misdemeanors. It’s not just about clogging pipes – over half of the participants (56%) were blissfully unaware of the environmental impact of their bathroom habits.

The survey coincides with the release of the documentary series “Whale with Steve Backshall” on Sky Nature. Poppy Dixon, the director of documentaries & factual at Sky UK, notes, “The study suggests why it’s so important for scientists and conservationists, such as Steve Backshall, to take audiences on a journey across the world’s oceans, to demonstrate how our actions and the life quality of our marine animals are more closely intertwined than we may think.”

The Environmental Impact

Surprisingly, 17 percent of those who admitted to dumping non-liquid items down the drain didn’t believe it was a problem, while 15 percent assumed that if it fits down the drain, it’s harmless. But here’s the kicker – 67 percent of respondents expressed a desire to do more to protect the world’s oceans and marine life, and two-thirds claimed to deeply care about ocean animals.

As the survey indicates, education and awareness are crucial. Over 60 percent wished they had known more about the impact of their actions on marine life years ago and admitted they would have changed their habits. However, almost half of the participants (48%) found it challenging to grasp the consequences of their choices because they don’t encounter whales or explore the depths of the ocean.

So, the next time you contemplate using your toilet as a makeshift trash bin, think twice. Our everyday actions may have far-reaching effects on the environment. It’s time to flush away the ignorance and become more mindful stewards of our oceans and marine life.
