New York to Ban Cars from Manhattan’s Central Park

New York will soon ban cars from its beloved Central Park, the city’s mayor announced Friday, citing a commitment to reducing pollution and “prioritizing people over cars.”

Automobile traffic was already prohibited in the north of Manhattan’s iconic green space, which will celebrate its 160th birthday next year. Vehicles could still circulate, however, on three concrete lanes in the south: West Drive, Terrace Drive and Center Drive.

The traffic ban on those thruways will go into effect June 27, the day after the city’s public schools close for the summer.

The measure does not concern, however, four dedicated below-grade roads that cross the park’s width and are separated from the rest of the park by walls.

“Our parks are for people, not cars. For more than a century, cars have turned parts of the world’s most iconic park into a highway,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said in announcing the move. “Today we take it back.”

“We are prioritizing the safety and the health of the millions of parents, children and visitors who flock to Central Park.”

The mayor’s decision follows his January decision to designate the loop drive in Brooklyn’s sprawling Prospect Park car-free.

“Central Park is one of New York City’s most iconic open spaces and is used by millions of New Yorkers and visitors,” said Daniel Zarrilli, the city’s Senior Director of Climate Policy and Programs.

“Making Central Park car-free will ensure that everyone who enjoys the park will enjoy cleaner air and improved safety in support of the City’s sustainability and climate goals.”

For Pakistani Dockworkers in Dubai, Kushti is a Way of Life

Every Friday evening in Dubai’s bustling Deira district, a sandy lot is transformed into the ring of champions.

It is kushti wrestling night and Kala Pehlwan is ready to fight.

As the sun sinks below towering palm trees, dozens of men — many in tunics, others in T-shirts — begin to form a perfect circle.

Most are Pakistani or Indian, from the cross-border region of Punjab, where kushti is a beloved pastime. They are also a pillar of the United Arab Emirates’ workforce.

Veteran wrestlers, now referees, pour water over the inner ring to minimise dust.

A peanut vendor drags a rickety cart around the circle, tending to the crowd — now three rows deep.

“Clink, clink, clink,” ring out wooden cymbals with bells.

The wrestlers unabashedly strip down to their underwear, donning yellow, red, or even floral-patterned loincloths.

“Kala Pehlwan, son, come to the ring! Suhail, son, come to the ring,” cries out 50-year-old Mohammed Iqbal — a Dubai kushti fixture.

Glaring, the opponents swipe one another’s bodies with sand — a reciprocal move to counter sweat.

The day’s matches are quick — sometimes under a minute — and hard fought.

A foot is trapped between a rival’s legs, a fighter flips over his opponent’s shoulders to escape his grip. One pins his match down on his stomach and throws sand in his face before getting restrained by the referees.

Spectators dart into the ring to film fights. Others watch in rapture, breaking out in cheers at decisive moments in the match.

The winner is declared when a fighter manages to pin his opponent to the ground on his back.

If the fight starts going over 20 minutes, the referees declare a tie.

On this evening, Kala Pehlwan finds himself overpowered — and faced with a challenge.

“Find me a fighter that can beat me,” his opponent taunts.

– ‘I’m famous’ –

Kala Pehlwan, 26, huddled with friends and came up with a plan. They would find a challenger — not from Dubai, but from their hometown of Muzaffargarh in the Punjab region of Pakistan.

Within days, they had gathered the money, throwing in 50-100 Dirhams (roughly $15-25, 12-20 euros) each to pay for a plane ticket.

“I can’t meet you tonight I’m going to the airport,” Kala Pehlwan tells AFP one Monday evening.

Two days later, AFP met Kala Pehlwan at his workplace, Dubai’s gleaming Waterfront Market.

Row upon row of ice-topped stalls are laden with fresh fish from Oman, Sri Lanka and beyond — a testament to the shipping hub that is Dubai.

The stalls bear the names of Emirati owners, but South Asians are the face of the market.

“We have connections from Pakistan at the fish market,” says Kala Pehlwan. This is where he learned about the kushti matches when he arrived in Dubai six years ago.

The brawny fighter enters the delivery area, crossing paths with his mentor, Mohammed Iqbal, who is pushing a cart of fish.

“When I enter the market everyone is excited. They recognise me and know my name. And if there is any problem, they come to help me because I’m famous,” Kala Pehlwan grins.

That evening, Mohammed Shahzad — the challenger from Muzaffargarh — tags along.

Dressed in a crisp, blue tunic, Shahzad, 22, says he didn’t hesitate when he received Kala Pehlwan’s call.

“The other fighter beat my friend and challenged him to find someone who can knock him out… so I came to Dubai,” he grinned.

– No kushti, no life –

Kala Pehlwan says kushti is a way of life back in Muzaffargarh.

“In our town, it’s a tradition to learn wrestling. Everybody grows up on kushti. They do not have bad habits like cigarettes or drugs. Everyone is trying to be fit for a fight.”

Kala Pehlwan — whose real name is Mohammed Arsalan — took his nom de guerre from a hometown legend who shares his fighting style.

He says a proper diet, coach and training are key to success. Eating right is his biggest challenge in an expensive metropolis.

Here, the fish market has some benefits.

“Fish is my favourite dish. It is the healthiest food because in Dubai, most things are coming in frozen form but fish is fresh. Every other day I am eating a fish from the market. We are getting free fish from our employer at the end of the day,” Kala Pehlwan says, returning to stack crates.

For Kala Pehlwan and many of his friends, Dubai is a temporary stage in life — a place to save cash before returning home.

They work hard and sleep in shifts.

AFP obtained permission to film at the men’s residence but was unable to because it would have disrupted the group’s sleeping patterns.

“We all have our jobs here. Some are porters, some work in the fish market,” Iqbal says ahead of a Friday match.

But kushti, he adds, “is our tradition. It’s where we come to de-stress.”

– ‘Better than fighting in anger’ –

Iqbal wrestled for more than two decades in Dubai before passing the torch to the next generation, whom he takes the time to train each evening before work.

“It’s not hard to get a space for these fights because in Dubai they always want entertainment and encourage us.

“The (authorities) say arranging fights like this is better than fighting in anger where you live or at your workplace,” said Iqbal.

Kala Pehlwan says he can earn 500-600 Dirhams ($135-$165) on a good night — the money collected in a plastic bag by the referee and champion — but kushti is not about money.

“We can’t enjoy life, we can’t have a good time if we don’t have wrestling in Dubai,” he said.

When Friday night comes around again, it’s the visiting challenger Shahzad who wins.

Motorcycle Girl Review: Not a Film, But a Movement

How many Pakistani films in the last decade have made you do something that you always wanted to do? None.

How many Pakistani films in the last 5 years impressed you without being over-budget? None.

How many Pakistani films in the last 1 year have made you say Wow while being in the cinema? None again!

Adnan Sarwar’s Motorcycle Girl makes you chase your dreams while staying within the budget and impresses on every level.

It is one of those films that you get in return for ‘all good things come to those who wait’, and you waited for Motorcycle Girl.

Synopsis

Zenith (Sohai Ali Abro) has a dream of fulfilling his father’s dream of going to Khunjrab via motorcycle and then returning to Lahore; there are bumps in her dreamy ride including a boss who doesn’t like her despite her being a vital member of his team, a fiancé who cares more about his mother and New York than Zenith and Pakistan; a grandmother who mindset is lost in the last century, a van driver who loves to have a good time with women around and her inability to ride a bike to top it all.

Motorcycle Girl opens to public in cinemas across Pakistan today! I believe we have made an honest, highly entertaining and sensitive film with Sohai Ali Abro delivering a once-in-a-generation acting performance. I also believe it is a remarkable collective achievement for Independent Pakistani Cinema to create a film of this caliber in less money than it costs to make an average 30-second corporate television commercial. This would not have been possible without Jami Moor and his team, Zulfiqar Jabbar Khan and all the other people who worked on this film for little or no money. You know who you are! This is an important film! Our cinema needs such films to do well if we are to have a future. Go and watch it with your family over the weekend. "IF" you like what we have created, tell the world!! We have done our part. It belongs to you now. Own it! -Adnan Sarwar @adnansarwar2020 🙌🏻 #motorcyclegirl #motorcyclegirlmovie #AdnanSarwar #sorrynotsorry #girlpower #pakistanicinema 🏍🇵🇰♥️

The girl not only learns to ride a bike but shames all those who stare at women than doing anything else by taking a trip her father wanted to when he was alive.

How she manages to do that is what makes Motorcycle Girl a memorable journey.

Analysis

The film has been co-produced by renowned advertising man and filmmaker Jami who has helped Adnan Sarwar in making a classic film for the years to come.

Yes, there are no song and dance numbers in the film and that’s the beauty of it.

The script is very tight and despite losing the way at some places, it bounces back and wows the audience with a smashing climax that no one was expecting.

Ride or die. 🎬 #motorcyclegirl 🐾

A post shared by Sohai Ali Abro (@sohaialiabroofficial) on

Acting wise the film belongs to Sohai who amazes with her acting skills and similarity with Zenith, on whose story the film is based.

Then there is veteran Samina Peerzada, Shamim Hilali, Sarmad Khoosat, Ali Kazmi among others who help Zenith become the Motorcycle Girl, in their own way. The cinematography of the film makes you want to go to the Northern Areas and never return and when that happens in case of a film, success follows.

Verdict 3.5/5

Adnan Sarwar produced Shah a couple of years back and won praise from all over – Motorcycle Girl proves that his first attempt at filmmaking wasn’t a fluke and he is one of those progressive filmmakers who believe in promoting our heroes and educating the audience at the same time.

C.R.E.W L.O.V.E ♥️ #themotorcyclegirl @adnansarwar2020 😍🙌🏻

A post shared by Sohai Ali Abro (@sohaialiabroofficial) on

It was a brave move to adapt Zenith Irfan’s story into a movie and even braver attempt to make Sohai Ali Abro act as a person rather than characters, as her roles were in Jawani Phir Nai Ani and Wrong No.

If he can make a film in less budget than that of a TVC, then why others can’t, that is the question.

The film is not just a project but a movement that will end up with women riding bikes all over Pakistan and ending their dependency on men, hopefully helping Pakistan in the longer run.

L’Oréal Paris Focuses on Female Empowerment with New Cannes Talk Show

L’Oréal Paris is preparing to shine a spotlight on women’s empowerment this May at the Cannes Film Festival.

The cosmetics giant, which has been the festival’s official makeup partner for 21 years, is launching a live talk show that will offer a platform to notable women in the film industry, as well as the brand’s high-profile ambassadors, who include Helen Mirren, Eva Longoria, and Julianne Moore. Dubbed “The Worth It Show” in reference to the brand’s famous tagline, the talk show will cover the topics of cinema, beauty, and female empowerment.

“Marked by the seismic societal shift for women in the cinema world, this edition of the Cannes Film Festival can no longer be just the expression of movie-star glamor,” the company elaborated in a press statement. It declared the show “a powerful moment during the Cannes Film Festival to bring women’s voices to all and unveil the ordinary women behind the actresses, with their stories, their triumphs and the obstacles on the way to feeling worth it.”

The talk show will run from May 8 through 14 on Cannes’s Martinez Beach and will be accessible to both festival attendees and the general public, in addition to being broadcast live on the brand’s social media channels. The group is also launching a public pop-up store, in the form of a “L’Oréal Paris Beauty Bar,” where members of the public will be able to browse products, have one-on-one sessions with make-up artists and partake in creative workshops.

L’Oréal Paris is not the only beauty brand to focus its attention on women’s issues in the wake of the “Time’s Up” and “#MeToo” movements. This year has seen the French brand Lancôme launch “Write Her Future,” a star-studded campaign aimed at tackling illiteracy rates among women around the world, while Elizabeth Arden and Reese Witherspoon teamed up to launch a special edition red lipstick to raise funds for the brand’s new “March On” campaign that champions women’s issues.

I could not be more proud and honored to be part of such an iconic brand.”

Stephane de La Faverie, Global Brand President at Estée Lauder, said of the model: “Her passion for beauty, unique voice and global social media presence will help us continue to inspire and connect with women around the world.”

The partnership will also see Kloss take an active role in the content production, via a series of videos — the first of which offers a tongue-in-cheek glimpse of her first day on the job. “We plan on doing all sorts of beauty tutorials, but in addition to that, fun, informative content around the science behind some of these products and all the research that goes into creating them,” Kloss told WWD in an interview. “I don’t just want to show and tell the products, but really create entertaining, engaging content.”

The brand will also support the fashion star’s “Kode With Klossy” philanthropic tech initiative for girls, which offers free, two-week coding summer camps for teenagers.

Kloss, who has previously acted as a brand ambassador for L’Oréal Paris, joins a stellar line-up of spokesmodels at Estée Lauder, including Misty Copeland, Kendall Jenner, Fei Fei Sun and Joan Smalls.

Is a Jimmy Choo Makeup Line on the Way?

Jimmy Choo could be the next big luxury brand to make a move on the beauty industry.

The iconic footwear and accessories brand is set to launch a makeup range in the near future, WWD reports. According to Pierre Denis, a chief executive officer of Jimmy Choo, the secretive beauty collection is going to “glamorous.”

The news comes amidst the launch of the brand’s third and most recent fragrance with Interparfums, dubbed “Fever,” which will reportedly hit the shelves this August, joining the brand’s existing roster of six scents.

Jimmy Choo is not the first iconic shoe company to edge its way into the beauty business — rival luxury brand Christian Louboutin also made the leap back in 2014 with the launch of a nail polish series. The brand’s beauty arm now spans high-end nail colors, lip colors and eye collections, in addition to perfumes. Meanwhile, sportswear giant Puma is also drawing parallels between footwear and cosmetics, teaming up with MAC on a trio of lipstick-inspired suede sneakers, while makeup mogul Kat Von D has a luxury vegan shoe line slated to launch later this year.

PCB Delegation to Visit India!

Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman, Najam Sethi, and Chief Operating Officer, Subhan Ahmed, will be flying to the Indian city of Kolkata on April 21st to attend the International Cricket Council meeting (ICC).

This visit is Sethi’s first to India after 31 long months, he previously visited Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) along with ex-chairman Shaharyar Khan, to discuss the bilateral cricketing ties between the two nations.

However, the talks were not successful as a protest done by Indian activists Shiv Sena had interrupted the meeting and the matter was going out of hand which is why it had to be left hanging.

As per reports, ICC is playing a significant role to ensure the Pakistani delegation might face no problems in getting visas for this month amidst political tensions between the neighbors.

India-Pakistan matches as everyone would agree are the most thrilling matches ever, because of the tension the two neighbors share.

Pakistani Celebrities Declare their Stance on Meesha Shafi-Ali Zafar Controversy

Meesha Shafi shook the nation yesterday with her shocking tweet that accused her colleague Ali Zafar for sexual exploitation and physical abuse.

In a long post, the songstress boldly revealed how she became a victim of harassment by Ali Zafar

Well! After this strong accusation, it was only a matter of time before Ali Zafar would respond to such allegations.

However, instead of calling Meesha out on social media, he chose to handle the matter differently.

Replying to Meesha’s allegations, Ali wrote,

The two parties have stirred up quite a storm on social media and a battle of the sexes has begun.

While there are some who are seen staunchly supporting Meesha and calling out Ali for such behavior, the other side seems to be sticking by him and supporting him.

With the matter quickly escalating, many were waiting for the prominent figures from the Pakistani media industry to react. And react they did!

Surprised to the core, these celebs had never imagined such a scenario as this one but were seen lending their support to the two through their tweets.

And it seems that they too are torn between “who’s right and who’s wrong” here. A clear division has been drawn as each took to the internet to express their opinion on the matter.

Celebrities supporting Meesha Shafi

Iffat Omar: ‘Why would she do this if she is not hurt?’

I have to address the elephant in the room,it’s not easy for me as I know both of them and families, both highly respectable for me.I read Meesha’s accusation 10times and then Ali’s reply. My analysis is simple on facts. Meesha is a superstar who is most successful and earns as much as male stars in this country. She is educated a perfect wife and super mom.She is young and extremely beautiful. Why would she do this if she is not hurt?As many are barking for fame or money????Hain??Cant have it more then she already does/. Celebrities supporting Ali Zafar

With such strong allegations against the popular actor and singer, many from the media industry just could not believe this of him and came out in support.

Mehreen Raheal: ‘You are a star’

May Ali: ‘I respect this man’

I’m not here to say who is wrong and who is right or who did what and who didn’t… Let’s say, I haven’t known him for long, but I have been working with him since 1 year, we shot our film in Lahore and then we were all together in Poland to shoot the rest of the film and I never ever got any kind of that vibe from him… I always found him talking to his wife and kids on FaceTime and this made me a fan of him, because he would always share his good and bad moments with his wife and family… When we were on set or in any restaurant with the whole team he would always make sure that he was sharing these moments with her… I am not judging anyone nor giving any clarification on anyone’s behalf, and we can’t judge the one side of a book… I respect this man @ali_zafar and want the truth to come out, until then we shouldn’t judge anyone’s character…🙏🏻🙏🏻

Mahira Khan generally spoke on the matter and slammed haters for cashing on the issue

Armeena Rana Khan also give her two cents on the matter!

Hamza Ali Abbasi also did not shy away from speaking up!

Actor Feroze Khan too voiced his opinion on the matter, however, his comment seemed to be a bit cryptic.

Here’s what he wrote.

Fakhr-e-Alam too chose to remain neutral and wrote:

And then there’s Mishi Khan, who seems to be so shocked by the whole unfortunate incident, expressed her opinion through a series of tweets.

Well! We are sure that this is one storm that isn’t going to die down soon. And if the matter is taken to court like Ali has said, then let’s just say that this will be a war that will shake the media industry like no other!

What are your views on this matter? Are you in support of Meesha or Ali or prefer to remain neutral?

People’s Bus Service: Air-conditioned Bus Launched in Karachi!

Alibaba ‘Doing a lot of Research’ on Driverless Cars: Jack Ma

E-commerce giant Alibaba is steering resources towards driverless car technology, its CEO Jack Ma confirmed on Thursday, joining a global race to shape the future of driving.

Despite fresh safety fears after a woman was hit and killed by a self-driving Uber vehicle in the US last month, many tech giants like Google as well as automakers are accelerating plans in an industry attracting billions of dollars.

The competition is heating up in China, the world’s largest car market, with internet firm and Alibaba rival Baidu recently predicting that self-driving vehicles will hit the road in the country within three to five years.

Both Baidu and Chinese tech giant Tencent are pursuing the technology, stirring speculation about Alibaba’s plans.

“We’ve been doing a lot of research on driverless things,” Ma told reporters on Thursday while on a business trip to Bangkok.

“What we want to do is (figure out) how we can make the cars more automatic, more friendly, more like a partner of human beings rather than just a driving tool,” he said.

Ma was speaking at a press conference in Bangkok after signing agreements with the Thai government, including a more than $300 million investment in a “digital hub” in eastern Thailand aimed at connecting regional markets.

“I believe our children will only work four hours a day and four days a week or maybe three days a week, but they still will tell us they are very busy. Why are they busy? They are in cars,” he added.

Ma did not elaborate on the company’s plans but said the purpose was not to commercially compete with rivals Tencent and Baidu.

Chinese authorities approved regulations this month to allow for local driverless road tests, according to state-backed media, which reported on Wednesday that Alibaba was adding staff to work on the technology.

Self-driving cars hold the promise of being more attentive and quicker to react than humans at the wheels, while also allowing people to use travel time more productively or pleasantly.
