Facebook Rolls ‘Profile Guard’ Feature in Pakistan

Facebook has now rolled out its facial recognition feature in Pakistan. Users have started to receive a notification, asking if they would like to apply for a safeguard protection on their current display picture.

This feature was rolled out by the company towards the end of last year as a security precaution due to the increasing number of fake profiles and stolen images. The guard prevents another person from downloading the user’s current DP.

That’s not all if any family or friend uploads an image or a group picture with a user in the picture, they will receive a notification.

Facebook’s facial recognition will help you monitor the following:

  • Find photos of user is in but not tagged
  • Safeguard photos against strangers, notification will be received if another user uses your image
  • Tells people using visual impairments in regards to who is in a photo or video. Audio will be generated giving information about who is in the photo.

How to Enable/Unable the Profile Guard

If you have not already received a notification from Facebook, here’s how you can enable and disable the profile guard on your profile.

  • Step 1- Open ‘Settings’
  • Step 2- Click on ‘More’
  • Step 3- Select ‘Privacy Shortcuts’
  • Step 4- Click on ‘More Settings’
  • Step 5- Select ‘Facial Recognition’
  • Step 6- Select ‘Do you want Facebook to be able to recognize you in photos and videos?’
  • Step 7- Select ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ accordingly

Let us know what do you think about Facebook’s new feature!

Snapchat Shares Drop After Protests on Ad Mocking Domestic Violence

Rihanna on Thursday denounced Snapchat after an advertisement made light of her beating by fellow pop star Chris Brown, sending the company’s share prices tumbling.

Rihanna on Thursday denounced Snapchat after an advertisement made light of her beating by fellow pop star Chris Brown, sending the company’s share prices tumbling.

The social media platform — which counts 187 million users, especially young people drawn to its quickly vanishing posts — had featured an advertisement for “Would You Rather?, a game app that asks sometimes provocative questions.

The commercial showed the two singers and asked Snapchat users whether they would rather “slap Rihanna” or “punch Chris Brown.”

The company pulled the advertisement and apologized, but Rihanna took to rival platform Instagram to denounce Snapchat.

“You spent money to animate something that would intentionally bring shame to DV (domestic violence) victims and made a joke of it!!!!” she wrote.

“This isn’t about my personal feelings, cause I don’t have much of them…but all the women, children, and men that have been victims of DV in the past and especially the ones who haven’t made it out yet….you let us down! Shame on you.”

Suggesting that fans may have as little need for Snapchat as she has for its explications, she wrote:

“Throw the whole app-oligy away.”

In a sign of Rihanna’s power, shares in parent company Snap Inc. fell 3.64 percent on a largely stable day on Wall Street.

It was the only the latest celebrity-inflicted blow to Snapchat, whose rise has been heavily linked to its pop culture appeal.

Last month, Snap share prices also went into a tailspin after socialite Kylie Jenner tweeted that the platform was becoming passé.

A Snapchat spokesperson said that the advertisement featuring Rihanna had been “reviewed and approved in error, as it violates our advertising guidelines.”

“We immediately removed the ad last weekend, once we became aware. We are sorry that this happened,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Snapchat came under fire from activists and social media users who questioned how the post made it past the platform’s review process.

“Just awful. Awful that anyone thinks this is funny. Awful that anyone thinks this is appropriate. Awful that any company would approve this,” Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of Bill and Hillary Clinton, wrote on Twitter.

Chris Brown was convicted in 2009 of beating Rihanna, his then-girlfriend, who was forced to miss the 2009 Grammy Awards.

The assault further shocked many observers when Rihanna, one of the most successful singers of the 21st century, temporarily resumed her relationship with Brown afterward.

Pakistan Becomes First Country to Legalize Sikh Marriages

Pakistan has become the first country to grant legal statuses to Sikh marriages. ‘The Punjab Anand Karaj Bill’ was introduced in the house on October 24, 2017.

The was said bill to be an act to help Sikh couples to register their marriages and dissolutions at the Union Council (UC) level.

“Although it is a Private Member Bill, I have the support of my party, the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and I am quite sure that no one from the opposition benches would oppose it keeping in view the importance of the bill,” Arora said.

Earlier last year in March, President Mamnoon Hussain gave his formal assent to the Hindu Marriage Bill 2017, already passed by both the houses of parliament, aimed at protecting the marriages and the family and safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of the Hindu families living in Pakistan.

This is a great initiative to show that the country openly accepts individuals of other culture and religion, and has a multicultural and accepting policy. The Sikh community, in particular, has been in the country for several years, considering their own home.

Leading Morning Show Faces Backlash For Showing Models in Blackface Avatar

HUM TV’s morning show ‘Jago Pakistan Jago’ is facing the extreme wrath of social media after showing ‘blackface’ makeup look in its segment ‘Mera Makeup Hai Kamaal’.

The host Sanam Jung has found herself on the receiving end of a barrage of criticism after images of models donned in blackface went viral on the internet.

WHAT IS BLACKFACE?

For those who don’t know about blackface transformation, it is a theatrical makeup technique used by a fair-skinned individual to represent a black person.

The practice is considered offensive all over the world, as it is deemed ‘cultural appropriation’.

SO WHAT REALLY HAPPENED?

Apparently, as part of a competition, the beauticians were given the task to dress models as a bride with ‘negro colored’ foundation.

Every makeup artist was given a dark-skinned base to paint their models in blackface.

Later, they were made to walk down the ramp flaunting extravagant bridal wears.

During the show, Sanam Jung, Amber Khan, and Fareeda Shabbir made use of the derogatory terms like ‘Habshi’, ‘Makraani’ and ‘Negro’ to explain how the models should look for the segment.

The episode is now recieving negative attention from people online!

People are furious that why fair-skinned models were purposely clad in black makeup!

The issue has now become a racial scandal.

Probably the team of JPJ had no idea that promoting blackface has always been condemned.

People believe that they could easily find dark-skinned modelsfor their segment.

WILL PEMRA TAKE NOTICE OF THIS?

Morning shows in Pakistan are now all about getting the most ratings and creating the most noise! Their hosts are known to do absolutely whatever it takes to be in the spotlight. From arranging fake marriages on-screen to inviting people who have been married more than once, they have done it all.

With this recent controversy creating a social media brouhaha, let’s see if PEMRA will take notice of this or not!
