Continuing the trend of last year, the channel will be returning with a new host and a variety of segments to enthrall its viewers.

Last year, Shahid Masood hosted the show. It is yet to see if he will retain his position as the host this year as well.

Queen Elizabeth, who turns 92 on Saturday, welcomed leaders from the 53 Commonwealth nations — mostly former colonies — to Buckingham Palace for two days of talks that will include discussions on trade, marine protection and tackling cyber crime.

In her opening speech, Queen Elizabeth spoke of her own “extraordinary journey” as head of the Commonwealth, which started under her father King George VI with the London Declaration of 1949.

“It is my sincere wish that the Commonwealth will continue to offer stability and continuity for future generations and will decide that one day, the Prince of Wales should carry on the important work started by my father in 1949,” she said, referring to her son Prince Charles.

Queen Elizabeth, who has been the group’s symbolic figurehead since 1952, gave up long-haul travel in support of the biennial summit in 2013 and the 2020 gathering is set to be held in Malaysia.

On the closing day on Friday, leaders are expected to discuss who should follow Queen Elizabeth in the role.

The position is not hereditary, but Prince Charles, who is also the heir to the thrones of 16 Commonwealth nations, is expected to get the nod, despite some unease among ardent republicans.

Charles, 69, told Commonwealth leaders the body had been “a fundamental feature of my life for as long as I can remember”.

“The modern Commonwealth has a vital role to play in building bridges between our countries,” he said.

Maltese Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said of Charles: “We are certain that when he will be called upon to do so, he will provide a solid and passionate leadership for our Commonwealth.”

British Prime Minister Theresa May, the summit host, paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth’s service to the Commonwealth at the opening ceremony.

“You have been the Commonwealth’s most steadfast and fervent champion,” May said.

“You have seen us through some of our most serious challenges.

“And we commit to sustaining this Commonwealth, which you have so carefully nurtured.”

– Clean oceans focus –

A spectacle of pomp and pageantry was staged to welcome the leaders, with a guard of honour and flag bearers greeting arriving dignitaries.

More than 100 troops from the Coldstream Guards were in the honour guard, wearing their famous scarlet tunics and bearskin hats.

Born out of the former British empire, the voluntary organisation, covering a third of the world’s population, typically focuses on development and democracy, but is placing greater attention on boosting trade.

During the two days of talks, the group is hoping to agree an ocean governance charter, an agenda for trade and investment, and a declaration on tackling cyber crime.

Given its highly diverse membership, if agreements can be struck within the Commonwealth, they can likely achieve wider support.

At the last Commonwealth summit in 2015, leaders struck a deal on climate change that helped pave the way for the Paris agreement days afterwards.

Friday’s sessions take place at Windsor Castle, west of London, where the leaders are left entirely alone to discuss whatever they wish.

The invitation-only gala event comes after the conservative kingdom lifted the ban on cinemas last year as part of a far-reaching liberalization drive, with US giant AMC Entertainment granted the first license to operate movie theatres.

Anticipation had been building after the authorities announced earlier this month that Saudi Arabia’s first cinema in over three decades would open on Wednesday, but officials dubbed the event at Riyadh’s King Abdullah Financial District a “dry run”.

AMC chief executive Adam Aron said ticket sales will commence on Thursday for the first public shows on Friday.

But local authorities indicated the test screenings could last for days before an online ticketing system is formally launched. Officials earlier said movie theatres are expected to open to the public in May.

“This is a historic day for AMC. This is a historic day for your country,” Aron told an audience of government officials and industry figures as he stood before a large screen in a converted concert hall.

“Welcome to the era when movies can be watched by Saudis not in Bahrain, not in Dubai, not in London… but inside the kingdom,” he said before the screening of “Black Panther”.

Religious hardliners, who have long vilified movie theatres as vulgar and sinful, were instrumental in shutting them down in the 1980s.

The move to reopen cinemas is part of a modernization drive by reformist Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is seeking to balance unpopular subsidy cuts in an era of low oil prices with more entertainment options — despite opposition from hardliners.

“Black Panther”, a film about a young monarch of a fictional African jungle kingdom, has drawn parallels with the Saudi prince.

“This is a story about a young (royal) who transforms a nation. That might sound familiar to some of you,” Aron joked.

– Untapped market –

International theatre chains have long eyed the kingdom as the Middle East’s last untapped mass market, with its more than 30 million people, the majority of whom are under 25.

AMC Entertainment signed a non-binding agreement in December with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund to build and operate cinemas across the kingdom.

Saudi state media has said the company expects to open 40 cinemas across 15 Saudi cities over the next five years.

AMC will still face stiff competition from other heavyweights including Dubai-based VOX Cinemas, the leading operator in the Middle East.

Similar to television programming, movies are likely to face some censorship in the kingdom, where sex, religion, and politics are widely seen as taboo subjects.

Long known for its ultra-conservative mores, the kingdom has embarked on a wide-ranging programme of social reforms that includes mixed-gender concerts and a historic decree allowing women to drive from June.

In February, Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority announced it will stage more than 5,000 festivals and concerts in 2018, double the number of last year, and pump $64 billion in the sector in the coming decade.

The reform stems partly from an economic motive to boost domestic spending on entertainment as the kingdom reels from an oil slump since 2014.

Saudis currently splurge billions of dollars annually to see films and visit amusement parks in neighboring tourist hubs like Dubai and Bahrain.

The director of “Ready Player One” is moving forward with his project to bring an adaptation of classic comic book character “Blackhawk” to film.

Following the success of “Ready Player One,” Steven Spielberg is staying with Warner Bros for “Blackhawk,” based on the comic book series of the same title illustrated by legendary artist Will Eisner.

The director behind “Jaws” will produce the film through his company Amblin Entertainment, rather than DC Comics owner Warner Bros and, according to The Hollywood Reporter, he is also likely to fill the director’s chair, pending confirmation.

The script is being written by David Koepp, a repeat Spielberg collaborator who is credited with screenplays for “Jurassic Park” and its sequel, “War of the Worlds,” plus “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” and its upcoming fifth part.

Blackhawk was published first by Quality Comics, beginning in 1941, and then DC Comics from 1957 to 1984.

The Blackhawks were a team of ace pilots formed during the Second World War and led by the eponymous, enigmatic Blackhawk himself.

They fought everyone from Nazis to mutant men and were pursued by numerous femme fatales.

The series was especially popular at the beginning of its run, when it was considered second only to “Superman” in terms of comic book sales.

Before “Blackhawk,” Spielberg has the “Indiana Jones 5” and “West Side Story” on his slate.

He is also involved in 19th century Papal drama “The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara,” starring Mark Rylance (Spielberg’s “The BFG” and “Bridge of Spies”) and written by Tony Kushner of Spielberg’s “West Side Story,” “Lincoln” and “Munich.”

“Blackhawk” was previously adapted as four-hour 1952 movie serial “Blackhawk: Fearless Champion of Freedom.”
