Samsung is not behind Apple either. Where the iPhone 11 pro max was considered the tip-top phone, the Samsung S20 Ultra is now running ahead. In light of this, both the companies are entering 2021 with new hopes and bigger goals. So let us dive into the specifications of Samsung Galaxy S21 and iPhone 12! The iPhone 12:

As we already are aware, the iPhone 12 is one of Apple’s most successful launches ever. Their Online-only event brought about many reveals as well as products showcasing state-of-the-art technology. The new A14 Bionic chip is set to throw Apple bounds forward as well as the Lidar camera.

Samsung Galaxy S21:

This is one of the most anticipated releases by Samsung. It is said to have a robust built quality as well as next-generation hardware installed. Whether it turns out to be an immense amount of success remains to be seen. However, it has some impressive features worthy of a glance.

The Design And The Hardware:

When talking about the iPhone 12, the phone has a smart, sleek design, which is sure to attract many customers. It does not bode well with any phone if it has an overly excessive body. Too much size can be impractical for the user since most prefer using just one hand for access. The iPhone 12 also features the A14 Bionic chip, which is the most advanced yet.

The Samsung S21 is reported to have a 6.2″ monster of a screen so that nothing can escape your eye. It is also said to house the latest Snapdragon 888 chipset. It is the most advanced in Android technology and should be given a glance. Additionally, it is said to have 128GB storage alongside a microSD slot.

Camera Capabilities And Battery Power:

The camera on an iPhone has always been one of its most defining features. The iPhone 5 had become quite famous because of its camera. So, when iPhone 12 came out with the Lidar camera, it shocked the world. Using the camera to detect depth in an image? It’s a feature worthy of a mention. The basic version of the phone comes packed with a battery of 2815 mAh.

The phone camera capabilities are quite new. It is said to have a triple camera array with a 12mp main camera, 64mp second telephoto camera, and an ultrawide 12mp camera. Additionally, it is expected to have a 10mp camera. It even has a 4000mAh battery, easily lasting you a day or longer.

Concerning the price, the Samsung Galaxy S21 is expected to be Rs.1, 99, 999/. It is definitely worth a buy, considering what it offers in terms of processing power, camera, and battery.

Both of these phones are definitely worth the investment and deserve the spotlight on them. It comes down to the user’s preference whether they wish to go for Samsung or Apple.

It’s time to break the invisible rules of marketing in Pakistan

I’ve seen Pakistan’s consumer economy evolve dramatically over the past few decades. From the use of unbranded carbolic soap, people have now become aware of what a brand stands for, and the benefit it plays in their lives.

What’s also visible is the changing dynamics of consumer connectivity. With 169 million cellular subscribers, 85 million 3G+ subscribers, and 87 million broadband subscribers,1 the way Pakistanis connect and consume information has changed drastically compared to the 90s.

It’s worth a pause to stop and reflect on how the consumer landscape of Pakistan has transformed. When speaking to brands, I realized that many aren’t asking themselves — “Are the marketing practices that got us here enough to carry us into the future?”

The mindset shift needed for the future

Advertising in Pakistan seems shackled by invisible rules from another era. Even though marketers live in the new age of digital along with their consumers, advertising budgets seem to follow a standard formula, based on campaigns that worked in the past.

Most marketers tell me they want to improve ad performance, but continue to do more of the same while expecting dramatically different results. At the same time, these teams question the impact of digital on sales. I’ve realized our industry believes Pakistan has limited internet penetration and poor access to smartphones, thus thinking digital won’t have sufficient reach.

But with 50% smartphone penetration, times are changing fast. To keep up, we need a mindset shift away from “the way things have always been done”, into a future embracing what digital can offer brands of today.

Perhaps a good place to start is by questioning the invisible rules of marketing found in Pakistan’s advertising landscape.

Myth #1: TV is the best way to spend my media budget

Despite living in an age of information, many marketers in Pakistan still rely on gut feelings and past experiences rather than embracing data and experimentation. Which means default assumptions from the past drive most decisions about the future.

Perhaps this is why large TV spends remain unchallenged. We see 65-70% of current ad spend being allocated to TV by default in Pakistan.2

Think with Google

Source: Google Internal Data, 2020.

Even though digital provides unmatched access to data and analytics to prove whether “it works”, many still trust TV as the best medium to reach their audience. When probed further, we hear common responses such as “TV works”, “it’s visible”, or “it has the highest reach”.

So we dug into the data and found that in Pakistan, most brands only leverage 20%-30% of the available reach on YouTube among their target audience.3 Over 90% of the campaigns don’t capture their full target audience because of low funding. Thus, many brands don’t realize the potential reach awaiting them on YouTube.

Myth #2: Allocating budget to digital doesn’t drive sales

Many marketers question the ROI of every dollar spent online. As they should! But ironically, brands could spend millions on TV without asking these same questions. They simply give TV a pass, believing it works.

TV may work for reach and awareness on a mass level, but it only provides limited post-buy data. While digital provides accurate and real-time measurement, not only around media metrics, but also on brand KPIs.

To demonstrate what digital can provide, our analysis found over 95% of YouTube campaigns in APAC drove significant lifts in brand metrics like awareness and consideration,4 with 89% of campaigns on the platform helping to drive a significant offline sales lift.

Myth #3: To do more, we need more budget

Another common belief on the marketing floor is, “more budgets yield better results”. But from experience, we all know this isn’t always true.

A better approach is to question our default media allocations. Making informed decisions based on data and optimizing returns without going deeper into our budget pockets.

Perhaps with this approach, a platform like YouTube in Pakistan — that has a reach of over 36 million people,5 and watch time that has grown 45% from 2019 to 2020,6 would be the most beneficial.

YouTube in Pakistan

How Nestlé Pakistan challenged traditional thinking

Recently, Nestlé Pakistan decided to challenge some preconceived rules to truly understand the impact their media campaigns have on sales. Partnering with Nielsen, Nestlé Pakistan conducted a Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM) study to see whether their overall channel mix was working to drive incremental sales.

The company focused on their Cerelac brand, a nutritional cereal for children. Historically, Nestlé had leaned into traditional media to reach Pakistani moms and boost offline sales. With this MMM study, Nestlé wanted to know whether Cerelac ads reached moms efficiently, if their digital spend was too much (or too little), and whether they were on track to boost sales.

The MMM study analysed two-years of brand activity, which included studying media investments, impressions, sales volume, and revenue across TV and YouTube.

The results uncovered a 67% incremental increase in sales per dollar on YouTube than TV.7 Additionally, the study revealed that even without increasing the overall media budget, they could improve the incremental sales per dollar by 21% by simply reducing the dark periods of online video. Having constant coverage on YouTube could generate 40% more impressions per week than the 2019 average.8

Armed with this information, the team at Nestlé realized they don’t necessarily need larger budgets to drive more sales. They have since taken a more data-centric approach, rather than only relying on their past experience to guide their media strategy.

An MMM study should not be a one-off exercise, rather brands should constantly question how their media mix drives sales, and experiment with new channels to keep up with ever-changing consumer behaviors.

These results back up many MMM studies conducted in the region, including a similar study from Nestlé Australia, where across more than 93% of the cases, YouTube had greater incremental sales per impression than TV.

So here is just one (and possibly the first example) where a brand team decided to challenge their default assumptions and relied on data and the will to experiment versus adopting an “it worked in the past” mentality.

Regardless of how they adapted their strategy, based on the results, the brand’s approach in the future will be more attuned to consumer behavior and the current reality. More importantly, they learned the importance of making every dollar count by using data to make informed decisions, which will guide all future campaigns.

As Nestlé’s tradition-challenging experiment shows, sometimes it pays to pause and reflect. To rely on data and experimentation and to challenge the invisible rules that might be holding you back from moving forward. It’s time that budget allocations were done differently.

The winters in this country are short-lived but so what? Pakistanis still enjoy it to the most with the best winter delights ever.

Every day calls for dry fruits as snacks (although the prices encourage one to have them as dinner itself) or a wide variety of halwas to satiate the sweet tooth. What’s your pick?

1. Dry Fruits

The first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of Pakistani winters is peanuts, chilgoze, and walnuts! Some even obsess over raisins, cashews, and almonds. Whatever your liking, maybe, one thing is for sure that this winter delight is a match made in heaven.

Seldom do we like to devour something so healthy by itself! Make the most of winters and get cracking and peeling.

2. Kashmiri Chai (Pink Tea)

Kashmiri Chai can be had all year round, but something feels wrong when having it in summers. It’s specially made for winters as desi households scour to make its color and then serve hot.

Some days are just incomplete without this winter delight— best served with pistachios and other supplements!

3. Fish

Just as monsoon rains call for pakore, winter evenings call for fish! In any form and face, fried, grilled, or steamed, Pakistanis love to fish to death. The lines outside Bashir Dar-ul-Mahi speak for themself despite the risk of contagion in the virus.

Fish is again another winter delight that is traditional for Pakistanis and incredibly healthy. What do you like your fish with?

4. Gajar Ka Halwa / Pethe Ka Halwa

This sweet delight is made with elucidated butter or ghee and laden with dry fruits and flavor. Under normal circumstances, Pakistanis looked forward to winter weddings because halwa would be the sweet dish.

Now, we must snuggle into our favorite corners at home and enjoy it with Emily in Paris! This sweet dish is truly the most traditional winter delight, without which winters and festivities feel incomplete.

5. Sarson Ka Saag

We’re convinced that anyone who can not enjoy a good bit of saag with makai ki roti and lassi is a burger. Period. This traditional dish is Punjabi in nature and special food for winters because of how healthy and warm it is.

The automobile industry in Pakistan is reaching new heights every day. It was just months ago that Toyota Yaris began to take firm footing in Pakistan. Before, not a lot of people were seemingly aware of Toyota Yaris. Now, Yaris has seen more sales than any other Toyota Vehicle. What is so special about it?

Despite its shortcomings, it does seem like a vehicle that delivers what it promises. Similarly, a brand by the name of Changan came into being in Pakistan. Its ‘Karvaan’ is a vehicle often used for bulky road trips with hefty cargo.

Speaking of the Changan Brand, they have recently a new vehicle which is being considered Pakistan’s Cheapest Sedan. It has been released to give competition to the Toyota Yaris and Honda City. There must be something in the vehicle to give an old champion, like City, competition.

The Changan Brand:

Changan’s Alsvin is being considered quite an impressive car. It delivers premium features and allows the user to get the maximum out of the vehicle. As you already know, the vehicle price is lower than its counterparts, and that makes it even more valuable.

Now, there is a way that you can pre-book this vehicle online. This means that you can get a hold of it or ‘Call Dibs’ on its way before it hits the market in bulk. It requires a simple procedure and does not take a lot of your time. If you do have a mind to purchase this vehicle, spare no moment to book it now!

Booking Pakistan’s Cheapest Sedan Online:

So what do you have to do?

  • First, open the Changan Pakistan website. It should not be hard to locate at all since recent searches must have brought up the result.
  • Next, go to the ‘Products’ tab and select Alsvin.
  • After that, scroll down and click on the ‘Pre Book Now’ option. This will now take you to the booking form itself. Half your work is done.
  • In the form, you will be asked to fill in your personal information, including mobile no., WhatsApp number, and source of payment.
  • They will also ask you to select from three variants as well as your choice of exterior color. They have quite a range!
  • Press the submit button when done filling, and you’re done! It’s booked.

What To Expect?

This vehicle has quite a lot of applications. They are beginning to establish themselves as a steadily rising one. Whether it is the Karvaan or the Alsvin, the vehicle production is expected to go through the roof. If that happens, there is much in store for us to see.

We hope that the company continues to rise through the ranks until it sits amongst the titans. If it’s bound to give Honda City competition, then it really must be worth something heavy apart from its weight. Changan Alsvin is expected to be priced at Rs.23 Lac. This is considerably less than the vehicles it is set to compete against.

3 Times When Khaadi, Generation And Elan Hired Dark-Skinned Models

khaadi

With all the fair skin craze deeply embedded in our society, Khaadi, Generation, and Elan were found using dark-skinned models.

Remember DJ? No? Rohan? Chandu k chacha? Now you get it. So in that movie DJ said it. She said, ‘We kicked out England back in 1947.” Historically she is right. She speaks for both India and Pakistan I must say, but did we really kick them out given all the skin color drama. Recently whitening cream brand also came under fire for promoting this idea. But that was due to the Black Lives Matter campaign.

Elan

The summer collection of Lawn in 2016 featured dark-skinned models. The campaign for it was filmed in Morocco. NFK Photography and the Indian model Nidhi Sunil were part fo this shoot.

Considering that Elan releases once in a year, and using a dark-skinned model as brand ambassador says quite a lot. It establishes their position quite well regarding this important issue. And since the target audience for Elan is the SEC A, it will leave a significant impact on them at least if not the entire nation.

khaadi

Khaadi

The Eid collection by Khaadi in 2018-2019 featured dark-skinned models. Upon a little research, Khaadi did the same the previous year as well. And this I personally believe is good in the sense that it is not a one-time deal. In fact, they have taken it on for some time. And I hope for a better society’s sake that it actually makes a difference.

The idea that dark can be beautiful will gradually embed upon the fairer skin dilemma. Eventually, it may even seep into the shadi culture where the rishta aunties might just stop rejecting the dark skinned prospectives.

khaadi

Generation

In the Fashion Pakistan Week Spring/Summer ’19, some famous brands presented their clothing lines. One of them was Generation. Their concept that week was to show desi and chic are not mutually exclusive. And so you would find dresses ranging from your regular qameez shalwar to saris and even Patiala shalwars. The collection was named ‘No Nonsense Nighat’.

khaadi

Normalizing the idea of having dark skins through your renowned brands is indeed an amazing gesture. It will take years obviously to change the mindset of people and get out of the post-colonial withdrawals. And if Khaadi, Elan, and Generation are taking up this cause, more brands will surely follow and that would be a step in the right direction.

Engin landed on Thursday and received a warm welcome on his first visit to the country after Prime Minister Imran Khan suggested the nation to watch the series and officially aired the Urdu dub on PTV Home so that quality content could be broadcasted to the Pakistani households whose drama industry has been under severe criticism for low-effort, quality deprived dramas.

A private business company invited Engin Altan. Social media was infiltrated with pictures and videos of the hero receiving love and a warm welcome wherever he would go by the public and the officials.

The Turkish star also discussed the idea of working in Pakistani Dramas at a press conference in Lahore on Friday.

The superstar was also invited to Chief Minister House by Chief Minister Punjab, Usman Buzdar, where he was presented with a shield and traditional gifts.

Soul-Searching ‘Sun Zara’ For Velo Sound Station Reinvents ‘Aag’s Sound!

For Episode 4 Velo Sound Station again delved into reinvention mastering a new sound for early noughties  Pop-Rock duo AAG.

AAG was formed in 2006 by Lahore-based brothers Haroon and Usmaan Sheikh who early on in their career were recognized and praised for their “earthy yet modern sound” by both critics and peers which garnered them an ardent fan following.

In 2011 they were hailed as “the biggest Rock Act to come from South East Asia” by BBC Radio UK when they performed a rock cover of Dutch-Pakistani, urban Punjabi singer, Imran Khan’s “Bewafa”

The band then fell under the radar focusing on private productions and collaborations. Until now that is.

Says Velo Sound Station’s Executive Producer Bilal Maqsood:

 Velo Sound Station

Aag was very big as a rock band in the early 2000s. Their sound was very heavy guitar-oriented. For VSS we planned to change their sound completely.

To this effect AAG’s once earthy Rock sound has been completely reinvented with a Sonic Retro-Pop vibe – a rebirth of synthwave from the 80′ – with the soulful song about lost love ”Sun Zara’ composed by Bilal Maqsood with deep lyrics by the legendary Anwar Maqsood and produced in terms of the arrangement including back up vocals by Usmaan and Haroon.

Say Haroon and Usmaan about the meaning and mood of Sun Zara.’
“‘Sun Zara) is an intense song about fading love: how a couple looks back about what went wrong; comes to terms with it as a circle of life. Like a leaf withering in Autumn the couple eventually stop talking and grow apart ”

 Velo Sound Station

The duo worked closely with Bilal Maqsood and his father the legendary scriptwriter, television host, satirist and poet Anwar Maqsood who came up with the idea of the song.

 Velo Sound Station

Haroon praises the song as being both simple and deep and is moved by the symbolism of the once beautiful flowers turning into thorns that hurt the eyes.
KHILLAY THAY GUL KABHI
AANKHON MEIN SUN ZARA

AAKHAY AB TUM HATHON SEY
KAATON KO SUN ZARA

KHILLAY THAY GUL KABHI
WOH PAAS THA
TOH ZAMANA PAAS THA

BEWAJAH ROOTHAY
BATHANA PAAS THA.

Enthuse the duo about the collaborative song :

“Honestly we think of this song as a gift from above. So thankful and humbled to have our inspirations (Bilal Maqsood)  champion us like this, it’s truly a dream come true!”
To complement the deep and austere nature of the song Haroon and Usman were dressed by Head of Wardrobe Ebtisam Ahmed in avant garde futuristic wrap tunic tops in muted neutrals and black with pants and heavy boots with Usmaan choosing to don a shaggy Warhol-esqe wig.

Explain AAG about their part 80s part anime look:

“Our outfits represent the sonic vibe of ‘Sun Zara’. The song has a new Retrowave feel to it, which in itself is a rebirth of Synthwave from the 80’s. This genre both shows what people back then thought the future would look and sound like. The rebirth of it carries elements of 2020 with new technology being used to make new music to honour the genre. We think that reflects in our style of fashion. The style also carries a mysterious element behind it, a sense of wonderment, and the mystery is revealed when the song begins. EB did a great job of bringing into fruition our vision.”

Add the duo about working with Velo Sound  Station:

“Working with the team has been truly inspiring, and the show itself is inspiring. Popular music is a cultural cornerstone for any region’s music industry. The fact that VSS has allowed us to effectively shape the music of this era, especially in this difficult year is truly remarkable. The stage is set for everyone to do their thing, their way, and the visual impact of each song is as important as the song. The people at VSS understand this, and that is inspiring.”

Mysterious, deep haunting and inspiring  ‘Sun Zara’ was showcased on Friday, November 11, 2020 on Velo Sound Station’s associated YouTube channel which now has over 206K subscribers.

Google, Gmail & YouTube Crash All Around The Globe

google crash

When your entire life revolves around applications of or linked to Google, YouTube, and Gmail, then when it crashes, it leaves you blind. And this is exactly what has happened. Google has crashed completely. This includes Google Maps as well.

Dine In: foodpanda Requests Government To Permit Indoor Dining At Restaurants With Enhanced SOPs

foodpanda

Karachi, Pakistan – Restaurants in Pakistan employ millions of people and indoor dining is their biggest source of revenue. After almost 6 months of lockdowns in 2020, most restaurants are on the brink of bankruptcy. Contrary to popular belief, an overwhelming majority of restaurants are small family-run establishments that are the sole source of income for these families.

In solidarity with restaurants of Pakistan, foodpanda is requesting federal and provincial governments to permit restaurants to operate indoor dining with enhanced social distancing and Covid-19 SOPs. Other countries that have successfully kept indoor dining open without increasing Covid-19 transmission risk have done so based on the following enhanced SOPs:

  1. No more than 1 person per 20 square feet of dine-in area
  2. Limit table sizes to maximum of 6 people
  3. Hand sanitizer on every table
  4. At least 8 feet distance between each table
  5. Temperature and mask check at the entrance for both employees and customers
  6. Mandatory mask wearing for all employees and customers
  7. Customers can only remove the mask when seated at their own table
  8. Charge a ‘Sanitization Fee’ of 10% of the total bill
  9. Mandatory leave for all employees showing flu or fever symptoms
  10. Post signage to remind customers of physical distancing rules
  11. Open doors and windows to increase ventilation
  12. Place food, cutlery and condiments on the table only after customers sit down
  13. Hygienically sanitize all crockery and cutlery after every use
  14. Full daily sanitization of all surfaces in the kitchen and in the dine-in areas
  15. Allow restaurants to use open-air footpaths or parking space to place tables
  16. Open-air tables may be cordoned off for privacy using temporary tent/fabric walls
  17. Customers not following enhanced SOPs may be asked to leave

“Closing dine-in doesn’t just impact restaurants, it also affects incomes for associated businesses such as food suppliers, farmers, and packaging manufacturers. We believe enhanced dine-in SOPs will ensure the survival of restaurants, allow continued employment for millions of people, and reduce the risk of spreading Covid-19” said Nauman Sikander Mirza, CEO at foodpanda. Nauman added that “While takeaway and delivery is currently permitted during limited hours for all restaurants, we believe it should be extended to 24 hours and 7 days a week because it incentivizes people to stay at home and dine in should be extended till 2AM.”.

Shahveer Jafry’s Event Photographers Slam His Wrong Allegations!

The famous Pakistani Youtuber living in Canada Shahveer Jafry recently had his engagement ceremony. After seeing fans grabbing at rumors, he confirmed the news himself by posting his picture from the event. But then a war ensued between the photographers of the event and the Youtube himself.

Shahveer’s take was that the photographer shared the images on their account without his consent.

The Instagram status read:

“I usually don’t take up complaints to social media, but this has affected me personally,” wrote Jafry. “I’m highly disappointed by the photographers working on my engagement. Since the engagement was a publicized event, they took advantage of that and posted whatever pictures and videos they pleased on their social media handles without our consent. This was supposed to be a personal and private event, but they just went public with it.

“Some of these photographers are vultures, and people deserve to know them.”

He tagged the event photographers at the end of the story: @Muazcaughtthis and @Coffee_cloud_photography.

The photographers were not far behind, though. @Muazcaughtthis shared a screenshot of Shahveer’s complaint that he deleted. And added his own comment that Shahveer has no copyright claim whatsoever over the pictures.

The photographer goes on saying that Shahveer copied all the content on the spot after the event because he said he wanted to post them himself. And he did but without crediting the photographers. Muazcaughtthis asked the public to hold the content creator accountable for not giving him credits.

The other tagged photographer’s page @Coffee_cloud_photography addressed the same issue, and they also shared a screenshot of a message thread by Shahveer Jafry’s fiancee. The fiancee permitted the message saying that since the pictures had already circulated everywhere, the photographers could post the picture wherever they liked. She later deleted the message.

The photographers also brought in celebrities in their feud. The page tagged the actress Ayesha Khan asking her to vouch for them. She commented: “Oh dear, there has got to be some misunderstanding. I know for a fact that that’s the last thing you’d ever do. Hoping this clears out soon, you are by far the most professional photographer I’ve ever worked with. I’ve wanted to name and shame the ones who were so unprofessional at my wedding. But I’d just gotten married and was too busy for any drama. I really hope this gets sorted out; till then, I’d vouch for you any day.”

This has been quite an entertaining war, although not as fun as Ducky Bhai and Sham Idrees debacle, we will give points for trying.

Shahveer Jafry has sent the internet and especially his fans into a frenzy as he announced his engagement. If you’ve been waiting to get an eagle eye’s view into the event, try your luck here!

About The Bride

Jafry’s fiance, Ayesha Baig, is a designer by profession. She has an Instagram page of hers on which her designs are available names, Ayesha Baig Couture. Naturally, her dress would be an awe-inspiring and unique one, and it was.

Ayesha looked nothing less than a charming diva on her day. If you want to get to know more about her preparations for the engagement day, feast your eyes:

The Ring!

At any engagement, the first and foremost question anybody asks or the first thing they want to see is The Ring! The YouTuber did not compromise on a beautiful ring for his fiance, and we must say, it is a gorgeous one.

A wedding ring is perhaps the most sentimental piece of jewelry one can possess; it only makes sense if it’s beautiful. See Ayesha’s engagement ring here:

Couple Coordination

It seems that the couple had coordinated beforehand to match their outfits. While Ayesha Baig donned an outfit in the beiges and a dupatta in pink to contrast the outfit, Jafry tried to follow suit. Jafry should be commended for making the bold decision to go for a pink suit.

However, not all bold decisions reap bold results positively! The suit is perhaps not suitable for an engagement or maybe not his color.

Shahveer Jafry

Shahveer Jafry is a Youtube sensation who rose to fame only with his content on the site. He’s friends with all the big guns on Youtube top, be it Zaid Ali or Rahim Pardesi, who can be understood to be pioneers of YouTube vlogging.

He has amassed millions of followers on Youtube, and it seems they will only rise now. The popularity he will gain from the publicizing of his marriage will only attract more people. Plus, it seems that most YouTubers have used their wives to further their reach— anyone saw Yumna and Zaid’s videos yet?

Shahid Afridi Slams All Rumors Regarding His Daughter

[Update]: Shahid Afridi has revealed that his daughter was never hospitalized as social media suspected. He said that social media should be more responsible when it comes reporting the news. He shared a picture with his daughter wishing her a very happy birthday. So it really was not his daughter’s hospitalization that brought Shahid Afridi back home midway from LPL.

To non-cricket fans, this may come as news: just as Pakistan has PSL (Pakistan Super League) and India has IPL (Indian Premier League), there are many other countries with their own cricket championships. And just like Alex Hales and Daren Sammy coming to play in our country, our cricketers go abroad to play in other’s countries as well. Shahid Afridi, also known as Boom Boom Afridi, is currently playing for Galle Gladiators in LPL, the Lanka Premier League.

Afridi in Galle Gladiators

Afridi is the captain of the Gladiators, and so even though he landed in Srilanka on 24th November, he was cleared to play on 27th. Although it is not just because of his captaincy, Afridi also submitted his antibodies test that made him somewhat stronger against COVID-19. Considering he has had COVID before and he has recovered recently, it is unlikely that he will contract it soon. And yet, Shahid Afridi returned to Pakistan due to what has been called a ‘personal emergency’.

This has led to a flurry of activity in the media where the audience tries to figure out what that emergency is. The Gladiators captain did not delve into the crisis’s details, but it has been relayed that he will return after handling that ‘emergency’.

Afridi Covid

Within a week of arrival, Afridi returned to Pakistan for this so-called emergency. LPL is supposed to continue until December 16th. And like they said that Afridi might go back to Sri Lanka, he will have to go before that. But having contracted COVID fairly recently works in his favor because he is not supposed to be quarantined for 7-days like other players if he chooses to go back. His antibody test is his get-out-of-quarantine card because not only does that make him an unlikely candidate for contracting the disease again, but also he will not be transmitting it either.

Now that the captain is gone, the team is under the leadership of the vice-captain Bhanuka Rajapaksa. In this tournament, the Gladiators haven’t won any games yet. Who knows if Rajapaksa’s administration is what will prove lucky for the Galle gladiators.

As it turns out that the emergency is related to the illness of Afridi’s daughter. His daughter is currently admitted in the hospital.

Another team at LPL, the Dambulla Viking, houses Aftab Alam of Afghanistan. He, too, has returned home for ‘personal reasons’. Considering he gave a fantastic performance on Monday for the team, the team would have suffered from his absence. But the Vikings have already secured 2 out of 3 wins, so they will probably not suffer a lot.
