Pakistan’s Economy To Show Recovery In 2021

stock market

2020 has been a very traumatic year, in general. With the pandemic, people got ill, but there were many other non-medical consequences as well. Many businesses shut down because of the lockdowns in place. People lost jobs as well. And the stock market shattered.

But not to be depressed because 2021 is starting to look better. It is expected that the year will begin to improve from January. By June, it will have marked significant economic recovery in Pakistan, as noted by the Asian Development Bank (ADB). So basically, the forecast by ADB assumes that the COVID impact will ultimately end on the economy by December 2020.

Having been presented with this forecast, the government is planning to incorporate further economic stimulation in the financial year 2021.

And we can see that from the status of KSE here. As the trajectory indicates, the stock market took a significant dip in April when the pandemic was the peak. But ever since then, it has gradually been improving. And finally, in Mid-December it achieved its very peak.

Coming back to 2021, inflation will also ease up. It will go to 7.5%, which is lower than what was forecasted for April in ADO 2020. Moreover, the fiscal deficit will also presumably decline to 7.0% in FY 2021.

ADB Country Director for Pakistan Xiaohong Yang said:

“Pakistan has achieved notable success in containing the dual health and economic challenge presented by COVID-19. As the curve flattens and business activity resumes, the economy is showing signs of resilience and recovery. The government’s rapid mobilization on 24 August of a 1.2 trillion rupee relief package comprising emergency financial support to daily wage earners, cash transfers to low-income families, accelerated procurement of wheat, support for health and food supplies, and financial support for small and medium enterprises helped shield the poor and most vulnerable during the pandemic. ADB remains committed to supporting Pakistan through this difficult period and helping the country get back on the growth path.”

Woman Who Accused Babar Azam Fails To Provide Proof

Update: December 16 2020:

On Tuesday, Lahore police claimed that the allegations made against Pakistani skipper Babar Azam have not proven to be true. They said that no solid evidence was provided in the case by the woman who accused him of sexual assault.

During the court hearing, the investigation officer presented the probe report before the judge which said that the case was filed back in 2017. However, the evidence was not enough to prove the allegations to be true.

Back Story:

Babar Azam

Earlier this month, a woman named Hamiza Mukhtar made allegations against Azam in a press conference claiming she was Azam’s neighbour and an old school mate. She said the cricketer had “tricked her into love” and “tortured” her when she demanded him to marry her.

Instagram and Its Truths

Meesha Shafi finds herself in the middle of a controversy, and it involves Babar Azam! Sound strange enough yet?

A fan page of Babar Azam was possibly feeling bored because nothing can explain why or how someone would make this up. The fan page had put up a collage of Meesha Shafi and Babar Azam with a ridiculous quote. It read: “ “I always stick to the television when he is batting, and when he gets out, I switch my television off.” But that was not all. The ending really packs a punch by saying: “I would love to date him, I just love him.”

Is it just us, or is this truly absurd and sounds fabricated? Check out the hilarious post here:

meesha shafi

Anyhow, Meesha Shafi does not need anyone to stick up for her; she does it pretty well.

Meesha Shafi Clapped Back

Meesha Shafi somehow came across that post and did not spare it. She put the post on her story on Instagram with a biting message and also a warning! In her story, she says, “I have no idea who this is or why this is. It makes 0 sense,” which we totally agree with. Then she continued it!

She added that “this is 100% concocted out of thin air” and that it is a “fabricated” truth. Meesha Shafi did not want to hold back- she even made sure to use effective emojis. However, that is still not all.

meesha shafi

Shafi then proceeded to tag Instagram and asked them to delete the post. We love someone who knows how to clap back!

Creativity At Its Peak

Whoever came up with the quote must have thought long and hard about it. It’s reasonable to believe that what if people put this much energy into actually covering good news or even elsewhere? This country and its people would definitely be in a much better place. Social media has created a culture that encourages people to continually attacks others.

Meesha Shafi and Controversies

Meesha Shafi’s name is known to all. The impeccably talented singer now resides in Canada and recently came out – or still is in-a huge controversy involving Ali Zafar. Whatever the verdict or the allegations maybe, in our society, a woman is demonic from the moment she points the finger at a man. And well, Meesha Shafi is pretty demonic!

Syra Yousuf Trolled For Posing In A Revealing Dress

Syra Yousuf struck the fancy of everyone after her latest shoot for a magazine with Sheheryar Munawar. However, this is Pakistan, not a utopia, not everyone was happy, and the trolls have emerged!

Asim Jofa Must Be Regretting The Post

The legendary designer of Pakistan’s Fashion Industry, Asim Jofa, recently shared a picture of the celebrity wearing his creation. She looks stunning in the picture in a muted toned dress with pleats and ruffles and a flowing silhouette. However, the dress is off-shouldered.

In a country where women’s ankles are seen as provocative, lo, and behold, shoulders are an abomination. That is all it took for trolls to come scouring towards the comments section. The cherry on the take is also Syra’s tattoo that’s showing in the mirror!

The Comments Say It All

The comment section is full of pointing fingers, self-assured citizens, and self-proclaimed, morally superior Muslims. Check out the barrage of trolling comments here!

2 Plus 2 Equals 3

It is our nationally shared tendency to be bad at maths. We believe that 2 and 2 equal 3, just as how, in this case, Syra Yousaf’s divorce equals her desire to wear “revealing clothes.”

syra yousuf, revealing dress

Revealing clothes are believed to either be a sign of the day of Judgement, are a sign of desperation, or are a sign of Western influence. We never knew sartorial choices could be this deep. For sure several early thinkers are being given a run for their money when it comes to theorizing clothes.

The Hilarious Indifference

The most humorous part of this entire tug of war between selective judgments and women and designers posting “revealing things” is the latter’s indifference towards the former.

It is now treated as a normal thing that one must turn the face away from or take into one ear and put it out the other. This barrage of moral policing, religion policing, dress policing has become so common and so rampant that others are no longer fazed.

The Men Are On The Right Track

In the same shoot when Shehryar Munawar appeared shirtless or, at another time, submerged in water while wearing a sheer shirt, it was a spectacle. For all the right reasons. Religion, morals, dress codes, and cultural integrity did not become a matter of discussion because he was a man.

According to our population, a woman is an interesting species: she is expected to carry the entire world’s wishes on her shoulders!

Prankster Nadir Ali gets serious for a moment and imparts a message: “Gaari Nahi, Kahani hai.” Are you in agreement?

Success Stories Don’t Come Easy.

Nadir Ali’s videos are infamous on Facebook and otherwise. He runs a page called “P for Pakao,” on which he and his team members post videos of pranking unsuspecting citizens. Though the world may always know him for bringing a smile to their face, he hasn’t always been this jolly or this selfless.

He recently shared his success story on Facebook. Standing next to a luxurious six-seater car, Nadir is in nothing but a shalwar and a torn vest. He supposedly recreated the look of his on the toughest night in his career.

Here’s the complete story!

The Toughest Nights Don’t Last.

Nadir Ali shares that he used to get only Rs 100 from his producers for his petrol. One day, when going back home, as his motorbike stopped, he realized he had not even been paid that. His mobile did not have credit either. These circumstances left him no option but to embark on a walk of two hours on foot towards him.

Nadir shares that his family tried to convince him a lot to leave the job. This is neither sustainable nor beneficial for you, they said. However, there is nothing greater than passion and resilience to conquer the toughest of obstacles. He went back to shooting the next day, and today, he gets to stand with this car.

We Hope It’s A Law Abiding Car!

Recently, Nadir Ali got served by the Federal Board of Revenue. A discreet investigation was launched against the prankster over suspicion of concealment of income. Upon completing the investigation, Rs. 13 million were demanded of him under charges of tax evasion.

We mean it when we say we hope this luxurious car is one bought in a law-abiding fashion. If we all could evade taxes, given the tax rate today, we’d all have a luxury or two under our belt.

Why is it always a car?

As many of you may have noticed, several celebrities, especially guys, stand next to cars. They use the automobile as a measurement of their success. Be it Zaid Ali, Asim Azhar, or now Nadir Ali, pride comes to them by buying the car for themself or their parents.

Though it’s true, the car can not come without success, telling people your success is validated or finished when that car comes. Success means different to all!

The Design And The Hardware:

When talking about the iPhone 12, the phone has a smart, sleek design, which is sure to attract many customers. It does not bode well with any phone if it has an overly excessive body. The basic version of the phone comes packed with a battery of 2815 mAh.

The phone camera capabilities are quite new. It is said to have a triple camera array with a 12mp main camera, 64mp second telephoto camera, and an ultrawide 12mp camera. Additionally, it is expected to have a 10mp camera. It even has a 4000mAh battery, easily lasting you a day or longer.

Concerning the price, the Samsung Galaxy S21 is expected to be Rs.1, 99, 999/. It is definitely worth a buy, considering what it offers in terms of processing power, camera, and battery.

Both of these phones are definitely worth the investment and deserve the spotlight on them. It comes down to the user’s preference whether they wish to go for Samsung or Apple.

It’s time to break the invisible rules of marketing in Pakistan

I’ve seen Pakistan’s consumer economy evolve dramatically over the past few decades. From the use of unbranded carbolic soap, people have now become aware of what a brand stands for, and the benefit it plays in their lives.

What’s also visible is the changing dynamics of consumer connectivity. With 169 million cellular subscribers, 85 million 3G+ subscribers, and 87 million broadband subscribers,1 the way Pakistanis connect and consume information has changed drastically compared to the 90s.

It’s worth a pause to stop and reflect on how the consumer landscape of Pakistan has transformed. When speaking to brands, I realized that many aren’t asking themselves — “Are the marketing practices that got us here enough to carry us into the future?”

The mindset shift needed for the future

Advertising in Pakistan seems shackled by invisible rules from another era. Even though marketers live in the new age of digital along with their consumers, advertising budgets seem to follow a standard formula, based on campaigns that worked in the past.

Most marketers tell me they want to improve ad performance, but continue to do more of the same while expecting dramatically different results. At the same time, these teams question the impact of digital on sales. I’ve realized our industry believes Pakistan has limited internet penetration and poor access to smartphones, thus thinking digital won’t have sufficient reach.

But with 50% smartphone penetration, times are changing fast. To keep up, we need a mindset shift away from “the way things have always been done”, into a future embracing what digital can offer brands of today.

Perhaps a good place to start is by questioning the invisible rules of marketing found in Pakistan’s advertising landscape.

Myth #1: TV is the best way to spend my media budget

Despite living in an age of information, many marketers in Pakistan still rely on gut feelings and past experiences rather than embracing data and experimentation. Which means default assumptions from the past drive most decisions about the future.

Perhaps this is why large TV spends remain unchallenged. We see 65-70% of current ad spend being allocated to TV by default in Pakistan.2

Think with Google

Source: Google Internal Data, 2020.

Even though digital provides unmatched access to data and analytics to prove whether “it works”, many still trust TV as the best medium to reach their audience. When probed further, we hear common responses such as “TV works”, “it’s visible”, or “it has the highest reach”.

So we dug into the data and found that in Pakistan, most brands only leverage 20%-30% of the available reach on YouTube among their target audience.3 Over 90% of the campaigns don’t capture their full target audience because of low funding. Thus, many brands don’t realize the potential reach awaiting them on YouTube.

Myth #2: Allocating budget to digital doesn’t drive sales

Many marketers question the ROI of every dollar spent online. As they should! But ironically, brands could spend millions on TV without asking these same questions. They simply give TV a pass, believing it works.

TV may work for reach and awareness on a mass level, but it only provides limited post-buy data. While digital provides accurate and real-time measurement, not only around media metrics, but also on brand KPIs.

To demonstrate what digital can provide, our analysis found over 95% of YouTube campaigns in APAC drove significant lifts in brand metrics like awareness and consideration,4 with 89% of campaigns on the platform helping to drive a significant offline sales lift.

Analysis of YouTube brand campaigns in Pakistan

Myth #3: To do more, we need more budget

Another common belief on the marketing floor is, “more budgets yield better results”. But from experience, we all know this isn’t always true.

A better approach is to question our default media allocations. Making informed decisions based on data and optimizing returns without going deeper into our budget pockets.

Perhaps with this approach, a platform like YouTube in Pakistan — that has a reach of over 36 million people,5 and watch time that has grown 45% from 2019 to 2020,6 would be the most beneficial.

YouTube in Pakistan

How Nestlé Pakistan challenged traditional thinking

Recently, Nestlé Pakistan decided to challenge some preconceived rules to truly understand the impact their media campaigns have on sales. Partnering with Nielsen, Nestlé Pakistan conducted a Marketing Mix Modeling (MMM) study to see whether their overall channel mix was working to drive incremental sales.

The company focused on their Cerelac brand, a nutritional cereal for children. Historically, Nestlé had leaned into traditional media to reach Pakistani moms and boost offline sales. With this MMM study, Nestlé wanted to know whether Cerelac ads reached moms efficiently, if their digital spend was too much (or too little), and whether they were on track to boost sales.

The MMM study analysed two-years of brand activity, which included studying media investments, impressions, sales volume, and revenue across TV and YouTube.

The results uncovered a 67% incremental increase in sales per dollar on YouTube than TV.7 Additionally, the study revealed that even without increasing the overall media budget, they could improve the incremental sales per dollar by 21% by simply reducing the dark periods of online video. Having constant coverage on YouTube could generate 40% more impressions per week than the 2019 average.8

Armed with this information, the team at Nestlé realized they don’t necessarily need larger budgets to drive more sales. They have since taken a more data-centric approach, rather than only relying on their past experience to guide their media strategy.

An MMM study should not be a one-off exercise, rather brands should constantly question how their media mix drives sales, and experiment with new channels to keep up with ever-changing consumer behaviors.

These results back up many MMM studies conducted in the region, including a similar study from Nestlé Australia, where across more than 93% of the cases, YouTube had greater incremental sales per impression than TV.

So here is just one (and possibly the first example) where a brand team decided to challenge their default assumptions and relied on data and the will to experiment versus adopting an “it worked in the past” mentality.

Regardless of how they adapted their strategy, based on the results, the brand’s approach in the future will be more attuned to consumer behavior and the current reality. More importantly, they learned the importance of making every dollar count by using data to make informed decisions, which will guide all future campaigns.

As Nestlé’s tradition-challenging experiment shows, sometimes it pays to pause and reflect. To rely on data and experimentation and to challenge the invisible rules that might be holding you back from moving forward. It’s time that budget allocations were done differently.

The winters in this country are short-lived but so what? Pakistanis still enjoy it to the most with the best winter delights ever.

Every day calls for dry fruits as snacks (although the prices encourage one to have them as dinner itself) or a wide variety of halwas to satiate the sweet tooth. What’s your pick?

1. Dry Fruits

The first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of Pakistani winters is peanuts, chilgoze, and walnuts! Some even obsess over raisins, cashews, and almonds. Whatever your liking, maybe, one thing is for sure that this winter delight is a match made in heaven.

Seldom do we like to devour something so healthy by itself! Make the most of winters and get cracking and peeling.

2. Kashmiri Chai (Pink Tea)

Kashmiri Chai can be had all year round, but something feels wrong when having it in summers. It’s specially made for winters as desi households scour to make its color and then serve hot.

Some days are just incomplete without this winter delight— best served with pistachios and other supplements!

3. Fish

Just as monsoon rains call for pakore, winter evenings call for fish! In any form and face, fried, grilled, or steamed, Pakistanis love to fish to death. The lines outside Bashir Dar-ul-Mahi speak for themself despite the risk of contagion in the virus.

Fish is again another winter delight that is traditional for Pakistanis and incredibly healthy. What do you like your fish with?

4. Gajar Ka Halwa / Pethe Ka Halwa

This sweet delight is made with elucidated butter or ghee and laden with dry fruits and flavor. Under normal circumstances, Pakistanis looked forward to winter weddings because halwa would be the sweet dish.

Here’s How To Book A Changan Alsvin Online!

Changan Alsvin to be booked

The automobile industry in Pakistan is reaching new heights every day. It was just months ago that Toyota Yaris began to take firm footing in Pakistan. Before, not a lot of people were seemingly aware of Toyota Yaris. Now, Yaris has seen more sales than any other Toyota Vehicle. What is so special about it?

Despite its shortcomings, it does seem like a vehicle that delivers what it promises. Similarly, a brand by the name of Changan came into being in Pakistan. Its ‘Karvaan’ is a vehicle often used for bulky road trips with hefty cargo.

Speaking of the Changan Brand, they have recently a new vehicle which is being considered Pakistan’s Cheapest Sedan. It has been released to give competition to the Toyota Yaris and Honda City. There must be something in the vehicle to give an old champion, like City, competition.

Changan Alsvin to book

The Changan Brand:

Changan’s Alsvin is being considered quite an impressive car. It delivers premium features and allows the user to get the maximum out of the vehicle. As you already know, the vehicle price is lower than its counterparts, and that makes it even more valuable.

Now, there is a way that you can pre-book this vehicle online. This means that you can get a hold of it or ‘Call Dibs’ on its way before it hits the market in bulk. It requires a simple procedure and does not take a lot of your time. If you do have a mind to purchase this vehicle, spare no moment to book it now!

Booking Pakistan’s Cheapest Sedan Online:

So what do you have to do?

  • First, open the Changan Pakistan website. It should not be hard to locate at all since recent searches must have brought up the result.
  • Next, go to the ‘Products’ tab and select Alsvin.
  • After that, scroll down and click on the ‘Pre Book Now’ option. This will now take you to the booking form itself. Half your work is done.
  • In the form, you will be asked to fill in your personal information, including mobile no., WhatsApp number, and source of payment.
  • They will also ask you to select from three variants as well as your choice of exterior color. They have quite a range!
  • Press the submit button when done filling, and you’re done! It’s booked.

What To Expect?

This vehicle has quite a lot of applications. They are beginning to establish themselves as a steadily rising one. Whether it is the Karvaan or the Alsvin, the vehicle production is expected to go through the roof. If that happens, there is much in store for us to see.

We hope that the company continues to rise through the ranks until it sits amongst the titans. If it’s bound to give Honda City competition, then it really must be worth something heavy apart from its weight. Changan Alsvin is expected to be priced at Rs.23 Lac. This is considerably less than the vehicles it is set to compete against.

There is no fun in having an excellent pizza without fun and exciting flavours. OPTP understands that which is why they offer 6 wonderful flavours you can choose from. Think Creamy Arabian, Pakistani Tikka, Mexican jalapeno, classic cheese, American pepperoni & Smoked Italian.

Is anyone else’s mouth-watering? Ours sure is especially with the mention of ‘Creamy Arabian’! You can make your favourite flavours even more exciting by enjoying your pizza with free dips by OPTP. If you’re the jalapeno person, or a pepperoni one or olives one, they’ve got you covered.

The Price Is The Best Part

Now, let’s get down to the best part- the price! In most cases, a pizza that good makes the price the ‘bad part’. However, OPTP offers you their incredible 9-inch Medium Pan Style Pizza in just Rs. 499+tax and 13-inch Large Pan Style Pizza in just Rs. 999+tax! Isn’t it unbelievable?

Continue being excited because in Rs. 499+tax, you not only get an incredible pizza, you can also feed two! The 9-inch Medium Pan Style Pizza is perfect for two as recommended by OPTP itself and the 13-inch Large Pan Style Pizza is perfect or a family of four in only Rs. 999+tax. You can also opt for the 13-inch large, stuffed-crust pizza, which is only available in large.

However, if you’re a pizza lover, we understand. Not everybody likes sharing! In that case, you can enjoy your favourite pizza at that remarkable price all by yourself.

3 Times When Khaadi, Generation And Elan Hired Dark-Skinned Models

With all the fair skin craze deeply embedded in our society, Khaadi, Generation, and Elan were found using dark-skinned models.

Remember DJ? No? Rohan? Chandu k chacha? Now you get it. So in that movie DJ said it. She said, ‘We kicked out England back in 1947.” Historically she is right. She speaks for both India and Pakistan I must say, but did we really kick them out given all the skin color drama. Recently whitening cream brand also came under fire for promoting this idea. But that was due to the Black Lives Matter campaign.

Elan

The summer collection of Lawn in 2016 featured dark-skinned models. The campaign for it was filmed in Morocco. NFK Photography and the Indian model Nidhi Sunil were part fo this shoot.

Considering that Elan releases once in a year, and using a dark-skinned model as brand ambassador says quite a lot. It establishes their position quite well regarding this important issue. And since the target audience for Elan is the SEC A, it will leave a significant impact on them at least if not the entire nation.

Khaadi

The Eid collection by Khaadi in 2018-2019 featured dark-skinned models. Upon a little research, Khaadi did the same the previous year as well. And this I personally believe is good in the sense that it is not a one-time deal. In fact, they have taken it on for some time. And I hope for a better society’s sake that it actually makes a difference.

The idea that dark can be beautiful will gradually embed upon the fairer skin dilemma. Eventually, it may even seep into the shadi culture where the rishta aunties might just stop rejecting the dark skinned prospectives.

Generation

In the Fashion Pakistan Week Spring/Summer ’19, some famous brands presented their clothing lines. One of them was Generation. Their concept that week was to show desi and chic are not mutually exclusive. And so you would find dresses ranging from your regular qameez shalwar to saris and even Patiala shalwars. The collection was named ‘No Nonsense Nighat’.

Normalizing the idea of having dark skins through your renowned brands is indeed an amazing gesture. It will take years obviously to change the mindset of people and get out of the post-colonial withdrawals. And if Khaadi, Elan, and Generation are taking up this cause, more brands will surely follow and that would be a step in the right direction.

What Were The Affairs And Occurrences That Happened Upon His Visit?

Soon after he landed, the Pakistani internet went into a frenzy for their love of Engin, who plays the lead role of Ertugrul in the well-known Turkish Series “Dirilis- Ertugrul.”

The hero took to Instagram and thanked his fans and the country for the warm welcome by posting a story with the caption, “Thank You For Warm Welcome To Pakistan.”

Engin landed on Thursday and received a warm welcome on his first visit to the country after Prime Minister Imran Khan suggested the nation to watch the series and officially aired the Urdu dub on PTV Home so that quality content could be broadcasted to the Pakistani households whose drama industry has been under severe criticism for low-effort, quality deprived dramas.

A private business company invited Engin Altan. Social media was infiltrated with pictures and videos of the hero receiving love and a warm welcome wherever he would go by the public and the officials.

The Turkish star also discussed the idea of working in Pakistani Dramas at a press conference in Lahore on Friday.

The superstar was also invited to Chief Minister House by Chief Minister Punjab, Usman Buzdar, where he was presented with a shield and traditional gifts.

The CM also welcomed him to the country and discussed the love his drama-series received from Pakistan’s people.

The Ertugrul star also spent the remainder of his time with private businesses, engaging with fans and making public appearances for his fans in the country.

According to sources, he spent time in Badshahi Mosque, visited the grave of Allama Iqbal, and spent time with his fans and officials on a two-day visit to the country. He also expressed his willingness to revisit Pakistan after receiving an overwhelming response and love on his first visit.

The Turkish celebrity got a lot of popularity and love after his super hit series “Dirilis: Ertugrul,” which had already gained an international audience, was broadcasted officially in Pakistan on national television on Prime Minister’s recommendation.

As expected, the series gained massive love from the people and praise for the script, acting & storyline, which lead to a nationwide fan-following of the Turkish series.
