Will Eid be Tomorrow? Ruet-e-Hilal Committee To Meet Today
Eid-ul-Fitr is one of the most important religious celebrations in the Islamic calendar. It marks the end of the month of Ramadan, during which Muslims fast from dawn to dusk. As the crescent moon of Shawwal 1444 AH makes its appearance in the sky, the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony in Islamabad hosts a truly exciting event every year. This year too, it’s time for the official meeting of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, where the goal is to sight the crescent moon and announce when Eid-ul-Fitr 2023 will be celebrated across the country.
The Zonal and District Ruet-e-Hilal Committees are also scheduled to meet at their respective offices to keep their eyes on the first glimpse of the moon. And the Chairman of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee, Maulana Syed Muhammad Abdul Khabir Azad, will make the final announcement regarding the moon sighting.
Now, we all know that predicting the appearance of the moon can be a tricky business. The Ruet-i-Hilal Research Council (RHRC) had already made it clear earlier this month that Eid-ul-Fitr is most likely to be celebrated on Saturday, 22 April. Despite this, the committees will still meet tonight, hoping against hope that they catch a glimpse of the elusive crescent moon. So, let’s wait for the announcement that will decide when we can finally say “Eid Mubarak!”

Transgenders Can Now Get Driving Licenses From The Lahore Traffic Police
Today, Pakistan is one of the only 12 countries worldwide that recognizes transgender identity on their national ID cards. Obviously, this is such a topic that everyone has their own point of view on this. Some people are alright with it while others are, let’s say, unhappy about the whole thing.
Five years ago, Pakistan passed legislation guaranteeing basic rights for transgender citizens and outlawing discrimination in its 2018 Trans Protection Act. The government had to face all sorts of reactions to this bill, but now they might face the same reactions again. Transgenders can now apply and get a driving license just like other people can but just in Lahore yet.
Sources say that about ten transgender individuals from Liberty Market’s Tahaffuz Center for Vulnerable Transgenders have earned their learner permits from the police in the last five days. The police stated that they will be given permanent driving licenses after getting their learner permits. Talking to the media, many transgenders showed gratitude to the Lahore police for taking this nondiscriminatory initiative.
This action is just one of the others that the Lahore police have recently been taking to improve the lives of the citizens. They raised the penalties for traffic violations, emphasizing the need of wearing a helmet when riding a bike, keeping the license centers open seven days a week, and most recently, issuing licenses to anyone, even transgenders from any city in Pakistan from Lahore. Moreover, Dr. Usman, the IG of the Punjab Police, revealed yesterday that the process for obtaining a driver’s license is now paperless.
How can you apply
As of right now, the only paperwork you need is your CNIC and the license money. Thus, you can now take your driving test and apply for a license at the closest khidmat markaz. It is entirely up to you whether you take the driving test in your personal vehicle or one that has been designated by the police.
The IG Police Punjab claims that the procedure has been streamlined so that people may simply get their driving licenses without the need for references. Several actions have been made in an effort to inspire the populace. More than 2.5 crore people own vehicles in Punjab, but just 45 lac people have a driver’s license, according to statistics. Moreover, about 75 lac automobiles have been registered in Lahore alone, yet.

Mortein Donates A Year’s Worth of Mosquito Repellent Products To Ziauddin Hospital To Combat Vector-Borne Diseases
In the wake of the devastating Dengue outbreak that hit Pakistan in 2022, Mortein, a leading pest control brand of Reckitt, has been taking several measures to help in preventing dengue and other vector-borne diseases by partnering up with various hospitals, NGOs, and federal agencies around the country over the past few years to reduce the spread and effect of dengue outbreaks.
Mortein has announced the donation of one years’ worth of their mosquito repellent products to Ziauddin Hospital to protect against dengue and other vector-borne diseases. The donation includes LED Complete with Refills, and Aerosol Sprays for each functional room at the hospital. This initiative brings us one step closer to achieving a dengue-free Pakistan.
As part of the initiative, an interactive storytelling session was held in the children’s ward to spread awareness about dengue protection and prevention. Additionally, product samples and informational booklets were provided to the public at an experience booth/kiosk set up on the hospital premises, to raise public awareness on the detrimental effects of Dengue and how to combat them effectively.
Faisal Waheed, CEO Reckitt Pakistan, while talking about the initiative said, ” Patients admitted in the hospitals are the most vulnerable due to low immunity. Prevention is the only cure in Pakistan; we need to take all the preventive measures possible to stay protected. Reckitt, in collaboration with Ziauddin Hospital, is taking this action in hopes of raising public awareness and save hundreds of lives threatened by dengue.
Pakistani Drama ‘College Gate’ Accused of Ripping Off Plot from ‘Elite’
With the television industry being so vast and huge it is possible that show writers and creators may have simultaneous ideas. However, sometimes shows might also end up being the same. Whether it was intentionally copied or whether it was just a coincidence might just always stay a mystery.
Recently, people are accusing a new Pakistani show to be another version of the Spanish Netflix show Elite. The show is called College Gate and is a production by Green Entertainment. Just recently, the yet-to-be-released movie Money Back Guarantee was also accused of being a ripoff of the Spanish global sensation, Money Heist.

What writer, Ateeq Inayat and Ali Sikandar and director, Fahim Burney have in store for us is still unknown but the show does look promising so no judgments here. By the trailer, the show looks nothing like Elite. Elite was a Netflix original murder mystery drama show. The story revolved around three working-class teens enrolling in an exclusive private school in Spain, and the clash between them and the wealthy students leads to murder.

Government’s Petrol Subsidy Scheme Is Here to Stay
The government just pulled an unexpected card on the International Monetary Fund (IMF)! Earlier they promised to shelve the petrol subsidy scheme, but, they’ve just gone ahead and submitted a summary for a relief package for motorcyclists and small vehicle owners. People living in Karachi are in dire need of any relief they can get. Especially for those of us going around on two-wheels or small cars.
Some people might argue that the government should be cutting back on subsidies and focusing on more sustainable energy solutions. And maybe they’re not wrong. But whatever it is, the government has finally given some sort of relief to the public are continuous torture due to a lack of utilities like electricity and gas.
Back in February, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced a subsidy for petrol to benefit motorcyclists and car owners with vehicles up to 800 ccs. To offset the cost, an Rs50 per liter increase was implemented for those belonging to the higher income category and who own vehicles above 800 ccs.
The Petrol Subsidy Summary
According to sources within the Energy Ministry, the Petroleum Division has now dist distributed a summary for approval by the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet. This comes after the Prime Minister finalized the “concept” of the proposal.
The summary reveals that the government plans to collect an additional amount of up to Rs75 per liter from consumers, who are already struggling to pay the high price of Rs282 per liter. The government needs to seriously consider the impact of these price hikes on the average consumer. It’s becoming harder and harder for people to make ends meet, and this is only going to worsen the situation.
Unfortunately, given the political episodes of Pakistan, many people see it as a mere political stunt, an attempt to strengthen the government’s popularity which has been plummeting as of late. And to make matters worse, even the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has expressed concerns about how the scheme could impact the budget and the potential for misuse.

A professor from NUST, Dr. Ashraf Iqbal, a renowned mathematician was invited for a guest lecture at Black Hole which is a teaching facility based in Islamabad. The professor who delivered a lecture spanning over two hours was called out by a student in attendance at the end. During a Q&A session, the students were asked to share their reviews about the workshop and whether they would benefit from a long-term program.
