Source: Current.pk

Pakistan’s interim government, under the leadership of Caretaker Information Technology and Telecommunication Minister Dr. Umar Saif, has unveiled an ambitious plan to enhance the quality of IT education.  To boost employment opportunities, and stimulate the country’s digital economy.

Centralized Examination for IT Graduates

In a recent press conference held in Islamabad, Minister Saif announced the introduction of a compulsory centralized examination for information technology students across the nation. This groundbreaking move aims to establish uniform standards for IT graduates.  By ensuring they possess the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in the industry.

Working in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission (HEC). The government will set mandatory standards for IT graduates, and the central examination will become a requirement for all university students pursuing degrees in IT. Graduates who successfully clear this examination will be offered opportunities to participate in practical apprenticeship programs. Hence bridging the gap between academic knowledge and real-world experience.

Bridging the Gap: Skills and Training

Minister Saif further detailed that this initiative will include the training of 16,000 individuals in collaboration with the National University of Technology (NUTECH). The minister’s vision extends beyond education. He envisions that this program will enable up to 200,000 people per year to earn annual incomes ranging from $50,000 to $60,000. This influx of skilled IT professionals into the job market is expected to generate foreign exchange reserves of up to $5 billion annually.

Additionally, Pakistan is set to launch a groundbreaking e-program in the coming weeks.  Which will provide a dedicated space for freelancers to work. The initiative, in partnership with the private sector.  It aims to offer interest-free loans under the e-Rozgar program, providing a conducive workspace for freelancers to thrive. It is anticipated that this initiative will provide workplaces for up to 500,000 freelancers.

Unlocking Online Payment Platforms

Minister Saif acknowledged the challenges in integrating popular online payment platforms such as PayPal and Stripe. Largely stemming from concerns related to the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) requirements. However, he remained optimistic, emphasizing the government’s commitment to providing these services to the country’s freelancers and businesses.

Furthermore, the government is poised to establish a start-up fund in the next few weeks. Which was backed by support from venture capital firms worldwide. This fund is expected to stimulate the growth of the country’s burgeoning start-up ecosystem. Which  facilitates innovation and job creation.

Driving Technological Advancements

In an effort to propel Pakistan’s technological landscape forward, Dr. Saif disclosed plans for 5G technology introduction immediately following the auction of the available 300 MHz spectrum. Moreover, a cell phone financing scheme, designed in collaboration with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). It will enable citizens to purchase high-end smartphones through convenient installments.

Safeguarding Digital Assets

To ensure the cybersecurity of the nation and protect against online data theft, Minister Saif announced the establishment of a dedicated cybersecurity authority within the next few months. This proactive approach underscores the government’s commitment to safeguarding digital assets and maintaining a secure online environment for both businesses and individuals.

Pakistan’s IT sector is poised for a significant transformation, and these visionary initiatives are expected to empower the youth.  Stimulating economic growth, and elevate the country’s global standing in the digital arena. Positive developments await the nation as it embarks on this transformative journey towards a brighter digital future.

Karachi Witnesses A Rise In Respiratory Tract Infections

Source: The Sun Daily

In a concerning trend, Karachi has witnessed a significant increase in respiratory tract infections over the past few weeks. This surge in cases has prompted health authorities to issue an advisory on prevention and control of influenza, signaling the need for heightened awareness and precautionary measures. The city’s healthcare facilities are reporting a substantial influx of patients with flu-like symptoms, marking the second spike in cases in the last two months.

Understanding the Nature of the Infections

Senior ENT surgeon, Dr. Qaiser Sajjad, noted that this resurgence in cases is attributed to multiple viruses causing illness, primarily managed through symptomatic treatment. Although some patients exhibit superadded bacterial infections and require antibiotics, laboratory diagnosis remains limited due to the absence of a virology laboratory in the city. Most patients recover within three to four days with proper fever management, bed rest, and increased fluid intake. Nonetheless, there are instances of influenza and rinofaringitis (nasal mucosa inflammation) caused by various agents, often remaining undetected.

Senior general physician, Dr. Abdul Ghafoor Shoro, emphasized that influenza viruses are the primary culprits behind the current surge, and he believes the health department issued the advisory rather late. Patients with symptoms like high fever, cough, body pains, runny nose, headaches, and sore throat can be managed well with symptomatic treatment. However, inadequate patient management can lead to complications like pneumonia, involving one or both lungs.

Underlying Factors Contributing to the Surge

Experts attribute the rising number of respiratory infections to weakened immune systems caused by sedentary lifestyles, junk food consumption, late-night sleep patterns, growing air pollution, and unhygienic living conditions. Dr. Sajjad expressed concern over unhealthy habits like frequent dining out and late-night screen time, calling such a lifestyle “destructive.”

Moreover, Karachi’s unpredictable weather patterns contribute to the issue, as sudden temperature variations can trigger illness in individuals with weakened immune systems. Experts emphasize the need for local studies to gather evidence-based data for improved patient management and prevention strategies.

Prevention and Protection

In light of the increasing cases, the health department has advised vaccination against influenza as the most crucial preventive measure. Vaccination is recommended for high-risk groups, including health workers, pregnant women, children under 5 years, and those with chronic cardiopulmonary diseases, to reduce morbidity and mortality caused by influenza viruses.

For individuals experiencing flu-like symptoms, it is advised to stay home for at least 24 hours, limit contact with others, use face masks when coughing and sneezing, avoid traveling if infected, improve ventilation in enclosed spaces, and hospitalize infected patients in isolation.

A Call to Action

As Karachi grapples with this surge in respiratory infections, it is crucial for individuals to take proactive steps to protect their health and reduce the risk of illness. Adhering to the advisory’s guidelines, along with promoting a healthy lifestyle, is paramount in combating these infections and safeguarding the well-being of the community.

Imran Abbas & Sadia Khan Hint At Their Upcoming Project

Imran Abbas and Sadia Khan, the popular duo from Khuda Aur Mohabbat franchise, have set the stage for an eagerly anticipated comeback with their latest project.

This iconic on-screen couple recently surprised their followers with a carousel of scenes from their upcoming drama serial, without revealing the title, leaving us with nothing more but speculations. It featured the Imran Abbas and Sadia Khan sharing a subtle yet heart-warming moment of hand-holding against the backdrop of a picturesque hilltop view, nestled amidst nature with the sun gently setting.

The comments section immediately filled up with anticipation not only from their dedicated fans but also from prominent figures within and outside the local entertainment industry, including Turkish actor Celal AL.

What’s worth noting is the fresh vibe that this new project exudes. Sadia Khan, in particular, radiates effortless elegance in a black top and sweatpants, her long locks flowing freely, and her makeup minimal. This marks a notable departure from her previous Khuda Aur Mohabbat avatar where she portrayed characters from conservative backgrounds, confined by societal norms.

The reel couple, to this day, reminds their fans of Khuda Aur Mohabbat without fail.

While there is little to speculate from the drama itself, we wonder if we’re looking at a possible fourth installment of Khuda Aur Mohabbat after Abdullah Kadwani, producer of production powerhouse 7th Sky Entertainment and Group Managing Director of Geo Entertainment, asked the fans which drama serial should get a new season, presenting fans with the choice between Khuda Aur Mohabbat and the recent blockbuster, Tere Bin.

Imran Abbas was previously seen in a 7th Sky Entertainment production titled “Ehraam-e-Junoon” that aired on Geo Entertainment, which makes such a collaboration even more likely as Sadia Khan marked her return after a hiatus of over four years, with the release of the romantic drama film “Huey Tum Ajnabi.

Khuda Aur Mohabbat or not, we’re excited either way.

Do you think this reunion will herald a new chapter in Khuda Aur Mohabbat or will it turn out to be an entirely distinct narrative? Let us know in the comments.

New Assassin’s Creed Game Character Art Leaked

New Assassin's Creed image

Ubisoft used to be one of the best companies in the gaming domain. They have released some of the best franchises out there. Do you remember playing Prince of Persia on your Playstation 2? Do you recall playing Far Cry 3 on your Xbox 360? Yes, all of these wonderful games are the courtesy of Ubisoft. Similarly, the Assassin’s Creed Franchise is one of the most popular ones of the last decade. What started as a simple game has evolved into a much more immersive one.

A lot of people consider Assassin’s Creed as a great history teacher. They have learned quite a lot from the game itself. While the characters themselves may not have existed during the time period, the period itself is quite valid. From the time of the Crusades to the Renaissance, all the way up to the American independence and the Industrial Revolution, the game has it all. Now, it seems that the character art of an upcoming game has been leaked!

Assassin’s Creed Rising

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is the most recent installment in the franchise. However, it is not the last one. According to sources, Ubisoft has quite a lot of installments planned for the franchise, set in different time periods and various countries. The next installment that we can expect to hear news about is Assassin’s Creed Red. This is a game set in the Japanese Feudal era and it expected to be quite an interesting play.

A Ubisoft writer has leaked character art regarding this game, and it seems the game features a female protagonist. From the art that has been leaked, the game looks quite aesthetic and is something that could hold a lot of potential. If Ubisoft follows the example of a few other games set in Japan like Ghost of Tsushima, then it can go somewhere good.

Hoping For A Good Game

We are aware that Ubisoft has disappointed fans in the past. Ever since they changed their playstyle, they have had a lot of mixed opinions. However, with the release of Assassin’s Creed Mirage, they have returned to an older playstyle. This gives us hope that maybe future games can also be quite amazing.

The franchise is known for the stealth factor as well as the cool attires and the parkour elements. That said, let us update you more on Assassin’s Creed Red as we come across developments.

Maxwell responds to Gavaskar after hitting fastest World Cup century

maxwell-responds-to-gavaskar-after-fastest-world-cup-ton-glenn-maxwell-jasprit-bumrah-best-fast-bowler

Australia’s Glenn Maxwell, long-awaited and much-anticipated, delivered a blitzkrieg century at the ICC World Cup 2023. The 35-year-old maestro unleashed a whirlwind innings, crafting the fastest-ever World Cup century in just 40 balls, a display of breathtaking strokeplay that left fans in awe.

This scintillating performance propelled Australia to a commanding total of 399 for 8 against the Netherlands at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday, firmly imprinting Maxwell’s name in the tournament’s annals.

Despite an unimposing run of scores (15, 3, 31*, 0) in previous matches, Maxwell’s demeanor did not betray a hint of pressure as he took center stage for this pivotal encounter. His last outing against Pakistan had invited scrutiny, particularly for his dismissal, as he was thrust into the pivotal No.3 slot after openers Mitchell Marsh and David Warner’s centuries. The strategy was explicit – to launch a ferocious assault from the get-go.

Criticism, notably from renowned Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, had cast a shadow on Maxwell’s approach. On the pre-match show on Star Sports, Gavaskar did not mince words, labeling the Australian all-rounder as ‘careless’, pointing to his shot selection.

“It’s a matter of ego. I think he was happy at RCB when he was given the No.3 slot. He felt he was important, he needed to make a contribution in every match. Here he is batting at 5, 6, and 7. In cricket, there is a thin line between carefree and careless. He has been on the careless side (in this World Cup) more. That first-ball dismissal against Pakistan, what kind of a shot was that? So clearly, (he was) careless and not carefree,” Gavaskar expressed.

Little could Gavaskar have foreseen the seismic shift in Maxwell’s performance that would unfold just hours later. Maxwell strode onto the field during the 39th over, just after Australia lost the wicket of Josh Inglish. Yet, the formidable partnership between David Warner and Steve Smith had already charted Australia’s course to dominance, with the score at 266/4 and 11 overs still to be played.

Maxwell’s symphony of destruction concluded at an astonishing 106 off a mere 44 balls, punctuated by eight towering sixes and nine crisply struck boundaries. “Probably just cleared my head a bit to just go out and play. The situation when Davey and Greeny got out, I had to take it deep a little bit. Patty was good as well. Even if they are banging it into the wicket, I feel I have enough time to go after it. And when they are bowling quick, my hands have to be faster. Just generally try to get it over the infield,” Maxwell eloquently reflected after the monumental feat.

Did Toyota Reveal Concept Photos For An Electric Land Cruiser?

Toyota EV Land Cruiser and its concept

Toyota is known for its reliability. You know a vehicle is going to last long when it has the Toyota logo in front of it. A lot of people buy their vehicles because they can handle rough terrain. In a city where you can find a lot of potholes, a Toyota is certainly able to handle itself well. The Corolla is practically a household name in the country. It’s considered as the epitome of reliability and endurance. In Japan, the name is among the top ones too!

In a recent Japan Mobility Showcase, Toyota revealed a few concept images. These images showed something that felt quite unbelievable. According to what we saw, Toyota intends to produce and release an electric Land Cruiser! Yes, the V8 monster that we all love seeing on and off the road might just be coming in an electric form. Is it possible to create a robust SUV without a combustion engine? Toyota seems to think so, let us take a look!

Toyota with an ev model

Toyota EV Mode

The EV Land Cruiser is set to have a similar design as the combustion engine one, with the lack of any bulky material on it. The design is sleek, wide and provides the look of a proper SUV. Additionally, there is a wide gap between the wheels, which we assume is to cater to the batteries in the vehicle. Toyota claims that the EV Land Cruiser can be driven on rough terrain quite easily. We would love to see that happen, since the vehicle is the king of off-roading.

Other than that, the company also showcased the concept of a mid-sized electric pickup truck. Yes, imagine the Vigos and the Roccos that we see here, but in an electric form. A monster such as that, driven without a sound almost feels a bit eerie but Toyota has plans for both the V8 and the Pickup. If we talk about the smaller sized vehicles, Toyota also showcased a foldable electric bike and a wheelchair that can be used to travel up and down stairs.

Seeing it Through

There are many other companies with electric vehicles in their lineup. They are sure to give Toyota good competition once they release theirs. If they manage to build SUVs which can handle the electric architecture and the physical terrain of the wild lands, they will be regarded as the kings of electric too.

Ahmed Ali Butt Thinks Our Cricket Team Needs A ‘Software Update’

Source: The Times

The ongoing Cricket World Cup has been a rollercoaster of emotions for fans and celebrities, especially when it comes to the performance of the Pakistan cricket team. Among those who have shared their opinions on social media, actors Mawra Hocane and Ahmad Ali Butt have provided contrasting perspectives on the team’s journey in the tournament.

Ahmad Ali Butt’s Candid Critique

Ahmad Ali Butt, in a candid Instagram story, didn’t mince his words when expressing his disappointment in Pakistan’s performance. His feelings mirrored the sentiments of many cricket lovers who had high hopes for the team. He began by lamenting how, like many other aspects of Pakistani society, cricket had become heavily politicized. Butt’s frustration was palpable as he criticized the excuses and justifications that had been offered for what he saw as the team’s “poor performance.”

Butt’s Call for Accountability

Adding to his disappointment was the reception from Pakistan’s neighboring country, which he sarcastically described as “wonderful.” Butt’s words resonated with fans who had invested their emotions in the team’s journey. He didn’t stop at expressing his discontent; he also pointed out the lack of accountability and predicted political manoeuvring over control of the team. He likened the situation to a software update, suggesting that a significant overhaul was necessary. In conclusion, he used the hashtags “Cricket World Cup” and “Pakistan Cricket Team” to share his message with his followers.

Mawra Hocane’s Optimistic Outlook

In contrast, Mawra Hocane offered a more optimistic perspective. Citing an ICC publication, she acknowledged the turbulence of Pakistan’s journey in the World Cup and the need for improvement. Hocane, however, also highlighted the indomitable spirit of Pakistani cricket.

She acknowledged that Pakistan might face repeated failures and that they would need a miracle to survive. But what Hocane truly admired was the Pakistani mentality of respecting opponents even in the face of adversity. She took pride in her country’s capacity to avoid bitterness, even when the going gets tough.

The Pakistani Way

Hocane also pointed out the warmth and kindness exhibited by the nation, which shines through regardless of the ups and downs of the game. For her, the spirit of the players and the fans is something to be proud of. She emphasized that, in Pakistan, cricket is a sport, not a war, and that they compete on the field without resorting to mockery, insults, or degradation. Whether they win or lose, the Pakistani approach to the game remains commendable in her eyes.

The contrasting viewpoints of Ahmad Ali Butt and Mawra Hocane reflect the wide range of emotions that cricket evokes in Pakistan. While Butt expressed his frustration and disappointment, Hocane celebrated the enduring sportsmanship and respect that remain integral to the Pakistani cricketing culture. In the end, both perspectives are a testament to the passionate and resilient spirit of Pakistan’s cricketing community.

7 of The Biggest Failed Products by Microsoft!

Microsoft failed products in history

Today, if we ask someone about Microsoft, you might hear nothing but praise. Of course, there are fans of other companies as well but people love Microsoft. The company has come a long way since the first product was made and they have been rising well. They are currently one of the top contributors to the advancement of technology. Alongside this, they operate within the gaming domain as well. The Xbox has been one of the most commercially successful products of all time.

However, Microsoft did not get to where they are now easily. They had to go through quite a lot of hurdles and face criticism. They have released products over the years that were not as successful as they had hoped for. There are products that were good but they seemed either too ahead or too expensive for their time. Let us take a look at some of the company’s biggest failed products.

1. The Microsoft Zune

Back when Apple was releasing the iPod and everyone was hooked to it, Microsoft released a series of products known as Zune, in 2006. They consisted of media players as well as a music subscription service. However, due to the features and functionality offered by the iPod, it did not sell well in the industry and was shut down in 2012.

2. Windows ME

The Windows ME (Millenium Edition) was released in 2000 after windows 98. However, there were such severe crashing and incompatibility issues in the product that they were forced to recall it. People loved Windows 98 but they had no good feelings towards windows ME.

This was a video conferencing platform that was launched by Microsoft. It can be called a product that was much ahead of its time. It was way before Skype and FaceTime were released. People did not understand it as much or they did not like the interface of it, thus it was cancelled. To think that such a failed product is now a billion-dollar industry.

4. Lumia Smartphones

When Microsoft acquired Nokia, they came out with a brand of smartphones known as Nokia Lumia. People first got intrigued by it, but once they started to use it, they disliked it. It had a lot of performance issues, it was limited in a lot of areas and it heated up quite a lot. There are people who call it ahead of its time in terms of a simple UI, but Microsoft suffered a blow.

5. Microsoft Windows Vista

Before we were introduced to Windows 7 and all its glory, we came face to face with windows vista. It was one of the worst windows that Microsoft had ever released. It had lots of glitches and was slow. Other than that, its hardware and software had incompatibility issues which were in addition to high prices. Eventually, it was cancelled by the company.

6. Office Assistant Clippy

Do you remember the paperclip mascot that used to appear on your windows? It was present within applications as an A.I assistant. People at the time did not have that solid of an understanding on how A.I worked. Due to that, they did not trust the technology that Clippy was made on. It was a new-born technology at the time and it was quite ahead, thus it had to be shut down. Before Alexa, let us always remember that Clippy came first.

7. Microsoft Windows 8

Here we have another windows by Microsoft that turned out to be a failure. It did not attract users because of its confusing interface. For the start menu, it took users to whole new screen which had only apps on it. You could not access the desktop while using the start menu. The company did fix the issue with the release of 8.1, but by then it was too late to get the people back!

These products were not the highlight of Microsoft but the company has learned from each and every one of them. It now stands among the front runners to the tech domain.

Ushna Shah Laments Govt’s Decision To Deport Afghan Refugees

In lieu of the decision to expel illegal Afghan refugees, tens of thousands of Afghan citizens have departed from Pakistan and are returning to Afghanistan this month.

The decision, which came earlier this month, was prompted by an explosion at a mosque in Mastung city near the Afghanistan border. The blast occurred during a religious celebration and claimed the lives of at least 50 people.

Pakistani government then issued directives for foreigners lacking proper documentation to depart by November 1, or else risk deportation.

Pakistan’s Interior Minister, Sarfraz Bugti, did not explicitly mention this incident or another attack in Balochistan province when issuing the crackdown order against “illegal” Afghan residents.

It’s worth noting that Afghanistan’s authorities have consistently denied offering sanctuary to militants who pose a threat to Pakistan.

Ushna Shah Shares Her Stance

Actress and model Ushna Shah took to her Twitter account to protest against the government’s decision, stressing how Afghan refugees must not be sent back to the realms of the Taliban since God knows what’s gonna happen to these people there.

Netizens React To Her Tweet

If there is one thing that happens often on social media, it’s the fans urging celebrities to get their information straight and educate themselves on the matter. A similar instance happened with Ushna where netizens shared their two cents about her tweet.

‘They are illegal immigrants Ushna.’ One user wrote.

‘Really? We can afford them. They are smuggling. They are increasing crime in Pakistan. Everyone has to protect their people first. We have been facilitating them for decades and we get hate in return.’ another user wrote.

‘Ushna this time you are on the wrong side.’

Pakistani authorities have emphasized that the countrywide enforcement actions are not aimed at the 1.4 million Afghan refugees who possess legal registration or the approximately 900,000 individuals holding Afghan citizenship cards.

The government has issued directives to law enforcement agencies to refrain from causing any inconvenience to Afghan residents who comply with the law. However, there have been claims from both Taliban representatives and refugees about alleged police misconduct, mistreatment, and instances of extortion.

Angelo Mathews joins Sri Lanka ICC World Cup 2023 squad

angelo-mathews-joins-sri-lanka-icc-world-cup-2023-squad

Sri Lanka’s seasoned all-rounder, Angelo Mathews, has been drafted into the ICC World Cup 2023 squad, replacing the injured pacer, Matheesha Pathirana.

Pathirana sustained a debilitating shoulder injury during Sri Lanka’s clash against Pakistan. This sidelining has ruled Pathirana out of the forthcoming crucial encounters against Australia and the Netherlands.

Angelo Mathews, no stranger to the international stage, had already joined the Sri Lankan ranks as a travelling reserve alongside the fiery pacer, Dushmantha Chameera, prior to the showdown with the Netherlands. His inclusion is poised to infuse a wealth of experience and serve as a pivotal morale boost for the Sri Lankan side. The all-rounder has been a stalwart for Sri Lanka, representing the nation in the 2011, 2015, and 2019 World Cups, even captaining the side in the 2015 edition.

Pathirana’s unfortunate exit marks another setback for Sri Lanka in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023, following the loss of their skipper, Dasun Shanaka, due to a quadriceps tear sustained during the encounter against Pakistan. Pacer Chamika Karunaratne has been called up to fill Shanaka’s shoes, while the leadership mantle has been passed to wicketkeeper Kusal Mendis.

Adding to Sri Lanka’s woes, their ace spinner Wanindu Hasaranga is also absent from the World Cup due to an injury.

The former champions find themselves grappling in the current ICC World Cup 2023 campaign, presently languishing at the ninth spot with a meager two points from four matches. Their next challenge comes against the defending champions, England, on October 26, in a battle to climb the ranks and revive their World Cup aspirations.

Misbah-ul-Haq opens up about suggestion to include Abrar Ahmed

misbah-ul-haq-opens-up-about-suggestion-to-include-abrar-ahmed

In the midst of Pakistan’s struggles in the ICC World Cup 2023, Former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq, who heads the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Cricket Technical Committee (CTC), disclosed that they had recommended the inclusion of mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed in the squad.

However, the team management thought otherwise and added Abrar Ahmed only as a reserve player along with Mohammad Haris and Zaman Khan.

Misbah-ul-Haq Advocates for Abrar Ahmed Inclusion

Speaking on a local sports channel, the 49-year-old Misbah-ul-Haq emphasized that teams would face Abrar only once, as this is not a series.

“Our [cricket committee] viewpoint was to include a mystery spinner especially when you are playing with different teams since it is not a series. Most of them would be playing for the first time,” Misbah stated. “So, we suggested keeping Abrar Ahmed in the squad keeping in mind, our spin bowling is not in good form and didn’t do well in the Asia Cup,” he added.

Source: PCB

He further mentioned that it was his and Hafeez’s opinion, emphasizing that the final decision rested with the team management and captain Babar Azam. “Team management and captain’s decision is more important in this regard,” he added.

‘Abrar Ahmed could have been a trump card’

The Pakistan team is currently grappling with challenges in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023, having suffered three consecutive losses out of five matches played.

The team management is facing criticism over player selection, particularly with regards to spin bowlers. Frontline spin bowlers Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz were out of form before the World Cup. Meanwhile, Usama Mir who was included as the third spin bowler, struggled in the two matches he played. He conceded 82 runs against Australia for a single wicket, while against Afghanistan, he gave away 55 runs without taking any wickets.

Considering his variations and recent success in test cricket, Abrar Ahmed could have been a game-changer for the Pakistan team. He has represented Pakistan in six test matches, claiming 38 wickets at an average of 31.07.

Shedding light on Pakistan’s $5B beauty industry through Daraz’s insights

In a world where appearance and self-confidence are often intertwined, the beauty and personal care industry has taken center stage. Pakistan, with its dynamic demographics and evolving consumer patterns, has not been left untouched by the industry’s allure. The beauty and personal care sector in Pakistan is in a phase of rapid growth, with Daraz, one of the leading e-commerce platforms, lies at the heart of this transformative journey. We spoke to the CCO of Daraz Pakistan, Arusha Imtiaz, who helped us understand the beauty landscape in Pakistan and gave us insights into how the market operates.

Untangling the Beauty and Personal Care Market:

For us to understand the market, Arusha gave us a little run-down of what products fall under Daraz’s Beauty & Personal Care category. These include personal care, Skincare, Makeup, Fragrances, and Beauty Tools. Expanding on the industry, Arusha shared, “The global beauty and personal care industry is often estimated at around $240 million, boasting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.6%. However, in Pakistan, where the industry remains largely undocumented, Daraz has conducted its own research to unearth the market’s true potential. According to our insights, the regulated market for beauty and personal care in Pakistan stands at an astounding $5 billion.” This goes on to show that there is ample room for businesses to thrive and for consumers to explore a diverse range of products and services.

The Majors and the Emerging Challengers:

Leading the charge in Pakistan’s beauty landscape are global behemoths such as L’Oreal, Maybelline, LUX, Sunsilk, Pond’s, Pantene, and Neutrogena. Over the years, these brands have nurtured a devoted customer base through strategic marketing and product innovation. With the advent of social media, they have leveraged global trends to tap into the awareness of eager consumers.

But Arusha tells us that it’s not just global giants that are making waves, “local brands have stepped up their game, attracting consumers seeking quality alternatives amidst rising inflation. The likes of Conatural, Hira Ali, Saeed Ghani, and others have achieved remarkable success, showcasing growth rates of up to 6 times on Daraz. Even more fascinating is the arrival of new players that match international brands’ pricing and quality, successfully carving a niche for themselves.”

Forces Fueling the Surge:

The growth of the beauty and personal care industry in Pakistan can be attributed to several key factors. The expanding middle-class population with higher disposable incomes has fueled the desire for products beyond daily essentials. The increasing number of women joining the workforce has broadened the customer base for beauty and cosmetic products. Internet penetration has simplified access to these products through e-commerce platforms, further facilitating consumer exploration.

Social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube have played an instrumental role in reshaping the industry. Beauty influencers and makeup artists use these platforms to connect with a vast audience, influencing purchasing decisions and propelling specific brands and products to new heights.

Daraz’s Growth Story:

Though Daraz maintains a policy of not disclosing their category-specific revenue split, their personal care category tells an impressive tale. Arusha shared that the category has seen remarkable year-on-year growth, with a 29% increase in 2022 and a staggering 51% growth so far in 2023.

Evolving Consumer Patterns and Beauty Perceptions:

In a highly competitive market, consumer patterns have evolved significantly in recent years. The introduction of new brands, products, formulas, and ingredients has provided consumers with a plethora of choices. This has resulted in a more experimental consumer base, willing to explore different brands and products. Daraz has kept pace with these trends by continuously onboarding new brands and products to cater to its diverse user base.

The Growing Male Interest:

While women still make up the majority of Daraz’s customer base for beauty and personal care products, there has been a noteworthy surge in male buyers. The trend is indicative of the increasing male interest in grooming and personal care. Brands are adapting by introducing products specifically tailored to men’s skin and grooming needs, demonstrating the industry’s recognition of changing preferences.

A Tale of Two Cities and Beyond:

Consumer trends can vary significantly between metropolitan cities and second-tier cities in Pakistan. While urban hubs like Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad showcase cosmopolitan preferences and buying power for high-end products, the penetration of social media and e-commerce has made tier-2 cities more aware and enabled. The convenience of online shopping has bridged the gap, making a wide array of products accessible to consumers in these regions.

Challenges and the Road Ahead:

The beauty and personal care industry in Pakistan faces challenges on both the supply and demand sides. Counterfeit products have plagued the supply side, affecting consumer trust. Additionally, consumers, in response to inflation, have become more price-sensitive, posing a challenge to brands. There is a need for local brands to scale up to meet the growing demand for quality yet affordable products.

The industry is shifting towards more scientific products, such as single-ingredient serums and carefully curated blends. Local brands must embrace this trend to manufacture such products within Pakistan. Value bundles are also gaining traction, offering cost-effective solutions for price-conscious consumers.

In the forthcoming five years, the industry is expected to grow at a 4% CAGR, with even higher growth anticipated for e-commerce platforms like Daraz as online shopping continues to gain popularity.

As the beauty and personal care industry in Pakistan continues its journey of transformation, it’s evident that the key to success lies in understanding and catering to the diverse needs and preferences of the ever-evolving Pakistani consumer. Daraz, with its finger on the pulse of this dynamic market, is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the industry.
