Dewan Motors To Begin EV Production In Pakistan

Dewan Farooque Motors Limited (DFML) has announced its entry into the electric vehicle (EV) market. Following its decision to resume production of the “Special Purpose Kia Commercial Vehicle,” Kia Shehzore, DFML plans to start manufacturing EVs under a new agreement. This news was shared with the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), marking a transformative phase for the company and the industry.

Strategic Collaboration with ECO-Green Motors Limited

DFML has partnered with ECO-Green Motors Limited (EGML) to produce EGML’s electric vehicle, the Honri-VE. Under this toll manufacturing agreement, DFML will use its facilities to produce the Honri-VE, designed by EGML. The Honri-VE, with a range of 200km to 300km, is set to start production in August 2024.

Since the launch of the Galaxy Fold in 2019 and the Galaxy Z Flip in 2020, Samsung has consistently led the industry in foldable technology. However, in a surprising turn of events, Huawei has now taken the top spot in the first quarter of 2024.

The Rise of Huawei

Huawei’s ascent to the top of the foldable market is notable given the obstacles it has faced. U.S. sanctions previously prevented Huawei from acquiring 5G chips, limiting its foldable phones to LTE connectivity. Despite these challenges, Huawei’s innovation and strategic partnerships have paid off. Now sourcing 5G chips from China’s largest foundry, SMIC, Huawei has equipped 84% of its foldables with 5G technology. This shift has driven a remarkable 257% year-over-year increase in Huawei’s global foldable shipments in Q1 2024.

A significant contributor to this success is Huawei’s Mate X5, their first 5G inward folding book-style foldable. Released in the third quarter of 2023, the Mate X5 has become one of the top-selling foldables in China, solidifying Huawei’s market position.

Market Shifts and Statistics

In Q1 2024, Huawei captured 35% of the global foldable market, a substantial increase from its 14% share in Q1 2023. Conversely, Samsung’s market share plummeted from 58% to 23% over the same period. This decline was influenced by a significant market shift: for the first time since 2021, book-style foldables outsold clamshell models, holding a 55%-45% lead.

Honor, another key player in the market and a former Huawei sub-unit, experienced an astonishing 460% increase in foldable shipments year-over-year. Honor’s market share in foldables rose from 3% in Q1 2023 to 12% in Q1 2024, with the Honor Magic V2 becoming the most shipped foldable phone in Western Europe.

Motorola also saw substantial growth, with a year-over-year increase in foldable shipments of 1473%. This surge gave Motorola an 11% share of the global market, driven by the success of the Razr (2023) model in North America.

The user claims that both their JazzCash and easypaisa accounts have been suspended, yet none of the representatives have provided proper reasoning or resolved their issues. The best reason they provided so far regarding the blocked account was due to “Disputed Transaction” which has ultimately left the user distressed.

Multan, May 30th, 2024: The leading Home-Appliances manufacturers of Pakistan – Dawlance with its initiative of empowering women, has inaugurated the first Women Led Authorized Workshop. Women who are leading the workshop have been a part of Dawlance’s special female internship program.

Keeping up with its legacy of strengthening different segments of the society, Dawlance undertook its ‘Dawlance Customer Care’ initiative three years ago. The program aims at encouraging women participation in technical fields. At the inauguration, the Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Umar Ahsan Khan spoke at length about the first female led Authorized Workshop which is an industry first, and Dawlance’s plans for more such workshops in the future, he stated: “We are thrilled to be inaugurating the first women led Authorized Workshop in Multan. Sources within the finance department have revealed that the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) will brief the Prime Minister tomorrow on the budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025. The government is also contemplating the imposition of sales tax on tractors and pesticides, products crucial to the agricultural sector. Currently, under the Sixth Schedule of the Sales Tax Act, pesticides and their active ingredients registered by the Department of Plant Protection are exempt from sales tax. Noise-canceling headphones have significantly improved over the years, offering users an auditory blank slate by erasing unwanted sounds. However, selectively allowing specific sounds to pass through this barrier has remained a challenge for researchers. While the latest edition of Apple’s AirPods Pro can adjust sound levels based on environmental cues, users still lack precise control over whom they listen to and when.

A groundbreaking development from a University of Washington team promises to change this. The researchers have created an artificial intelligence system called “Target Speech Hearing” (TSH) that enables a user wearing headphones to isolate and listen to a single person’s voice in a crowded, noisy environment by simply looking at them for a few seconds. This innovative system was presented on May 14 in Honolulu at the ACM CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems.

How It Works

The TSH system leverages AI to modify auditory perception based on the user’s preferences. By wearing standard headphones equipped with microphones, a user can tap a button while looking at someone who is speaking. This action enrolls the speaker by capturing their vocal patterns. The system then cancels out all other ambient sounds and focuses solely on the enrolled speaker’s voice, even as the user and speaker move around.

Senior author Shyam Gollakota, a professor in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering at UW, explained the broader implications of this technology: “We tend to think of AI now as web-based chatbots that answer questions. But in this project, we develop AI to modify the auditory perception of anyone wearing headphones, given their preferences. With our devices, you can now hear a single speaker clearly even if you are in a noisy environment with lots of other people talking.”

Technical Details and User Experience

To use the system, the user directs their head towards the target speaker and taps a button on their headphones. The microphones on the headphones pick up the sound waves from the speaker’s voice, which are then processed by an on-board embedded computer running machine learning software. This software learns the speaker’s vocal patterns and continues to filter and play their voice exclusively to the listener.

The system’s precision improves with more vocal input from the speaker, enhancing the clarity of their voice over time. The technology, however, can currently enroll only one speaker at a time and works best when there is no other loud voice coming from the same direction as the target speaker.

Performance and Future Prospects

The TSH system was tested on 21 subjects, who rated the clarity of the enrolled speaker’s voice nearly twice as high as unfiltered audio. This work builds on the team’s previous research on “semantic hearing,” which allowed users to select specific sound classes—such as birds or voices—to focus on.

While the system is still in the proof-of-concept stage and not yet commercially available, the team has made the code accessible for further development. This innovation opens the door to a future where personal auditory experiences can be finely tuned in real-time, transforming how we interact in noisy environments.

20% Federal Excise Duty Jeopardizes Pulp Procurement, Fruit Value Chain: Media Reports

The agricultural sector is grappling with numerous challenges, leaving fruit farmers in Punjab without any relief in sight.

According to reports in the media, juice manufacturers have scaled back their involvement in fruit markets by decreasing their procurement and contract-farming targets, Geo News reported.

The implementation of a 20% Federal Excise Duty (FED) in the 2023-24 budget triggered a downturn in industry sales to Rs43 billion, a far cry from the potential figure of over Rs70 billion based on projections. This has inadvertently fueled the growth of an unregistered sector offering cheaper, lower-quality, and potentially unsafe products. Consequently, the rural fruit farming economy associated with this value chain has been severely affected, Geo News reported.

Industry representatives report that the imposition of the 20% Federal Excise Duty (FED) has slashed their sales by 50-70%, leading to a significant reduction in their procurement targets.

The industry’s decreased operations have resulted in heightened unemployment, with no new investments initiated in 2023-24 and none anticipated for the subsequent year. Following a 41% decline in industry volume and nearly a 50% reduction in fruit procurement, companies have been compelled to lay off employees, especially those on daily wages.

“The industry is confronting a crisis, prompting numerous considerations of downsizing sales and production teams to cut costs,” remarked a representative of a packaged juice company. He questions the government’s net benefit from this policy, pointing out that the decline in sales leads to revenue shortfalls.

The spokesperson for the Fruit Juice Council emphasizes the vital role of the formal packaged juice sector in preventing significant food wastage and supporting farmers’ livelihoods through the promotion of best practices. He proposes the adoption of progressive taxation models, similar to those in other countries, which offer tax incentives for packaged juices.

He notes that in India, pure fruit juices are subject to only a 12% GST, compared to Pakistan’s 18% GST plus the FED.

“The government should consider reducing the FED to allow the formal industry to flourish, enabling it to attract new technology and investments, and capitalize on the global demand for our fruits,” the spokesperson stated.

Yesterday, Hashmi appeared on Hafiz Ahmed’s podcast. Amidst conversation, Hashmi addressed a prevalent controversy regarding a joke. Apparently some joke he cracked about Mariam didn’t make many laugh. Seems embarrassing coming from a comedian.

He cleared up on the podcast that the joke was light-hearted. The comedian also cleared up that him and Mariam are close enough for it to not be inappropriate.  It was continued that him and Mariam often joke around with each other and its just they way they are.

He discussed Mariam a bit more, sharing she’s quite mischievous and is quite the jokester herself.

Regardless, Tabish acknowledged that there some things you just don’t discuss on live television. He quoted, “But that was our personal joke. There are some things that you should not discuss openly, let alone joke about them.” And for this he apologised.

He shared that in the middle of all the chaos on the show, more often than not, some jokes just slip out of you like that. Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do about it. This one in particular, could not get crossed out of the Youtube recording either. It did get cut out, but only much later.

Mariam Nafees’s Reaction

Tabish even requested to address the joke the very next day. Upon discussion with Mariam, she refrained from agreeing to do so. Despite pleads, Mariam suggested it is best to not fuel the fire and like it fade away on its own. As do most controversies around celebrities, this too was eventually forgotten about.

Black Day Declared By University Faculty Over HEC Budget Cuts

The Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (FAPUASA) has announced a black day protest. On the 30th of May, for all nationwide universities. This is all being done over the significant budget cuts made by the federal governments for the HEC ( Higher Education Commission ).

The council decided to observe a black day on May 30 in all universities and directed academic staff associations to hold meetings and rallies. FAPUASA also plans a sit-in in Islamabad to demand the restoration of the HEC budget.

FAPUASA leaders condemned the federal government’s decision. They have been calling it unconstitutional and harmful to higher education. Higher education is vital for the growth and development of Pakistan currently.  They emphasised the need to place budget decisions before the Council of Common Interests (CCI). Moreover, urged the government to allocate funds according to provincial shares.

The federation criticized the government’s prioritization of development projects over addressing the measles outbreak and called for the immediate withdrawal of the budget cut. They demanded an increase in the higher education budget to Rs500 bn in the upcoming federal budget. They have also then warned that failure to do so could lead to the closure of universities nationwide.

The Vice Chancellors Committee urged the federal government to continue supporting universities and requested provincial governments to contribute to university budgets. An emergency meeting chaired by UAF VC Dr. Iqrar Ahmed Khan highlighted the severe impact of the budget cuts on the future of higher education and the financial survival of universities.

The council’s actions do not take into consideration the critical need for adequate funding in higher education. Without proper financial support, universities risk closure, affecting countless students and educators, nationwide. It is essential for the government to reconsider its budget priorities. Plus ensure that education receives the necessary resources to do well and contribute to the nation’s future.
