If you own an iPhone, you know how expensive they are. You also know that they are highly coveted by thieves who want to steal and sell them for a quick profit. But did you know that there is a setting on your iPhone that can help prevent thieves from selling your phone? By changing this one setting, you can make it much more difficult for thieves to sell your iPhone, and increase your chances of getting it back if it’s stolen.
The Activation Lock
The setting in question is called Activation Lock, and it’s a feature that’s been around since iOS 7. Activation Lock is designed to prevent someone from using or selling your iPhone if it’s lost or stolen. When you turn on Activation Lock, your iPhone is “locked” to your iCloud account, and no one else can use it without your iCloud password. This means that even if a thief manages to steal your iPhone, they won’t be able to sell it to someone else, because the phone will be “locked” to your iCloud account.

To turn on Activation Lock, go to Settings > iCloud > Find My iPhone and turn on the switch next to Find My iPhone. You’ll also need to turn on the switch next to Send Last Location, which will automatically send the last known location of your iPhone to Apple when the battery is low. This can be extremely helpful in locating your iPhone if it’s lost or stolen.
Once you’ve turned on Find My iPhone and Send Last Location, your iPhone is now protected by Activation Lock. If your iPhone is ever lost or stolen, you can go to iCloud.com/find or use the Find My app on another Apple device to locate your iPhone on a map. You can also use Find My to play a sound on your iPhone, even if it’s on silent mode, to help you locate it if it’s nearby.
Using Find My iPhone to erase data
If your iPhone is truly lost or stolen and you can’t get it back, you can use Find My to remotely erase all of the data on your iPhone, which will make it useless to anyone who steals it. To do this, simply select your iPhone from the list of devices in Find My and select Erase This Device. This will erase all of the data on your iPhone, including your iCloud account information, and it will no longer be “locked” to your iCloud account.
In addition to protecting your iPhone from theft, there are a few other things you can do to increase your chances of getting it back if it’s lost or stolen. First, make sure you have a passcode set on your iPhone. This will prevent someone from accessing your personal data if they steal your iPhone. Second, consider using a tracking device, such as Tile, to keep track of your iPhone’s location. Finally, if you’re going to be traveling with your iPhone, consider using a secure, anti-theft backpack or bag to keep your iPhone safe from pickpockets and thieves.
By turning on this one setting, you can make it much more difficult for thieves to sell your iPhone, and increase your chances of getting it back if it’s stolen. So take a few minutes to turn on Activation Lock, and enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing that your iPhone is protected.
