Robot Interview: AI revolution hits human resources

robot interview

You have a telephone interview for your dream job, and you’re feeling nervous. You make yourself a cup of tea as you wait for the phone to ring, and you count to three before picking up.

Now imagine that your interviewer is a robot named Vera.

Russian startup Stafory co-founder Alexei Kostarev says Robot Vera, which his company developed, is driven by artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms.

“It’s machine learning,” Kostarev said, as he explained that his firm programmed Vera using 1.4 million interviews, as well as Wikipedia and 160,000 books.

When Vera first started conducting phone interviews, she followed a script, but that has since changed.

“Vera understands the kind of answers candidates give,” Moscow-based Kostarev told AFP by phone.

And while robot recruiters will appeal to companies trying to keep costs down, there may also be another, more subtle advantage.

“When (candidates) give feedback on a job offer for example, they (say) more honest things they would not tell … a human,” Kostarev said.

Stafory says Robot Vera currently has 200 clients, major companies which then take the selected job candidates through conventional interviews and final selection.

– Danger of bias –

More broadly, human resources specialists are looking to AI solutions to speed up recruitment processes as a whole.

US company ZipRecruiter is touting a real-time selection service, with each job offer posted immediately on as many as 100 websites.

In the blink of an eye, its algorithm then trawls through the 10 million jobseekers who have registered with ZipRecruiter to see which best suit the job description.

The prospective employer then gets a shortlist of the top candidates, making recruitment a far less time-consuming exercise.

Ian Siegel, head of ZipRecruiter, told AFP the system works well because “employers aren’t great at describing what they want but they know what they want when they see it”.

Algorithms get better and better over time at detecting what kind of profile companies are looking for, as human resources staff give a virtual thumbs up to their preferred candidates.

So far so good, but of course there are concerns.

Biometric Verification For Transfer Of Vehicles Now Compulsory!

For one, the algorithms are learning so fast it is hard to work out how they make such crucial choices.

There is also a fear that the robots cannot remain immune to weaknesses such as bias or prejudice — when all their learning comes from humans.

ZipRecruiter is trying its best to take the risk of bias into account in its algorithms.

But “the thing is, the algorithm is so sophisticated, there’s so many different pieces of information, we can’t reverse engineer exactly how it’s coming up with the matches,” Siegel said by phone.

– ‘It takes two’ –

Jeremy Lamri of the Paris-based association of human resources start-ups called LabHR said one way to counter this risk is to dial down the AI in the system.

“It is enough to tell the machine what to look out for; there is no need for machine learning in this,” he said.

Technology is developing all the time as employers look for candidates with soft skills such as learning capacity, adaptability, and the ability to work well in a team.

“If tomorrow someone invents a scanner which can tell simply by looking into your eye whether you can perform well in a job, then I would think most (companies) would adopt it,” said Lamri.

But if machines can make the initial selection, it should always be up to human beings to make the final choice, said Laurent da Silva, head of Adecco recruitment units Badenoch & Clark and Spring.

“It’s like in our private lives,” he said.

“AI can help facilitate meetings, but at the end of the day, it takes two real people to tango.”

Volkswagen Sees ‘Good Start’ to 2018 Despite Slip in Profits

German car giant Volkswagen on Thursday reported a drop in profits but nonetheless said strong sales got the year off to “a good start”, as new CEO Herbert Diess pushes on with a post-dieselgate revamp of the behemoth.

German car giant Volkswagen on Thursday reported a drop in profits but nonetheless said strong sales got the year off to “a good start”, as new CEO Herbert Diess pushes on with a post-dieselgate revamp of the behemoth.

VW said it booked a net profit of 3.22 billion euros ($3.9 billion) between January and March, down nearly three percent on the same period a year earlier and slightly below analyst expectations.

Underlying or operating profit slipped by 3.6 percent to 4.2 billion euros, the firm said, blaming the drop mainly on accounting changes and negative currency effects.

Revenues hit 58.2 billion euros, up 3.6 percent year-on-year, as the VW group with its stable of 12 brands delivered a record 2.7 million vehicles in the first quarter.

In a statement, the Wolfsburg-based company said the year was “off to a good start”.

Demand for VW vehicles — which also includes luxury Audi and Porsche and the more affordable Skoda and Seat makes — was driven by the Asia-Pacific region, led by China’s strong appetite for SUVs.

“Once again, the growth driver was the Chinese passenger car market,” VW said.

The picture in western Europe was more mixed, with sales slowing in Italy and Britain, while dealerships in Germany were boosted by the robust economy and the popularity of a trade-in scheme for older diesel engines.

– Betting big on China –

The quarterly results are the first to be announced since VW brand chief Diess unexpectedly replaced Matthias Mueller as chief executive earlier this month, as the group seeks to draw a line under the diesel emissions rigging scandal.

Mueller was himself brought in to rescue VW after the company admitted in 2015 to installing cheating software in 11 million diesel vehicles worldwide to dupe pollution tests.

While Mueller managed to bring VW’s share price and profits back up to pre-crisis levels, he himself landed in prosecutors’ sights and the company remains mired in a sea of legal woes at home and abroad.

Diess has vowed to steer the car titan out of the dieselgate cloud and continue VW’s pivot towards the greener, cleaner cars of the future.

Much of the focus will be on China, where VW this week pledged investments of 15 billion euros in electric and autonomous vehicles by 2022, in cooperation with local joint-venture partners.

“The quarterly results confirm we are on the right path,” Diess said. “It is now a matter of pursuing this course in a strong and focused manner.”

Investors appeared satisfied with the group’s explanations, sending VW shares climbing 2.4 percent to 171.02 euros to the top of a DAX index of leading German shares that was largely flat at 0915 GMT.

Looking ahead, VW confirmed it expects to increase revenue by “as much as 5.0 percent” compared with the previous year.

It will also target an operating profit margin before special items of between 6.5 and 7.5 percent, compared with 7.4 percent last year.

The group said the main challenges this year were likely to come from economic headwinds, stronger competition and the continued fallout from the diesel scandal, including tough new EU emissions rules.

WhatsApp is Mirroring Facebook with Latest Major Update!

WhatsApp is mirroring a Facebook feature with its newest update. Being one of the most used social media applications, the platforms are doing everything possible to ensure user safety and security after the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Now, WhatsApp is also allowing users to “Request Account Info”. The company also announced that it is not sharing account information with its parent company, Facebook at this time.

With this feature, the user can request the company to export a report of their WhatsApp account’s setting and information. For example, their chat, pictures, videos, profile picture, group names, etc.

Facebook also has a download data option allowing users to get a report of their activity which users can download and view accordingly. A new FAQ support page details how the tool will work.

Facebook has a Secret File with your Name on it!

According to TechJuice, Previously, Facebook’s download tool and the new Instagram data download tool were offering a link to users within 48 hours. All the data can be easily available for you to download.

While WhatsApp’s support page says that account reports will be available approximately 3 days after the date requested. Meaning you have to wait 72 hours before you could download all the chats, pictures, videos, etc.
