TikTok And Zindagi Trust Launch The Second Stage Of Digital Safety Campaign With MoITT

24 February 2023, Pakistan With the help of the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications, TikTok and Zindagi Trust have announced an expansion of their partnership to promote awareness of digital safety. About 50,000 beneficiaries will benefit from this renewed cooperation, which is a part of TikTok’s international efforts during Safer Internet Month, spread over 100 public schools in all of Pakistan’s provinces. A larger number of schools will have access to this campaign thanks to the Pakistan Telecom Foundation’s inclusion in this alliance.

The MoITT, which supported the Digital Safety program, was present at the signing ceremony between TikTok and Zindagi Trust. Almost 1800 students, teachers, and parents benefited from more than 20 workshops held in the first phase of this cooperation, which was started last year, at the two government schools chosen by Zindagi Trust: SMB Fatima Jinnah and Khatoon-e-Pakistan. The workshops covered a wide range of topics related to staying safe online, including safety rules and the TikTok Community Standards.

Farah Tukan, Head of Government Relations and Public Policy – Middle East, Turkey, Africa, Pakistan, and South Asia at TikTok, said: “We are happy to extend our partnership with Zindagi Trust, especially after the impact we were jointly able to create around digital safety awareness during the first phase. This extension is another step in the right direction for ensuring our TikTok community in Pakistan remains digitally safe.”

Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication, Syed Amin Ul Haque said: “To commemorate the Safer Internet month, the government deems it a priority to actively work towards providing safer digital spaces. The partnership between Zindagi Trust and TikTok is a step in the right direction for disseminating necessary awareness and guiding young people toward digital safety. We are looking forward to adding value to this partnership for the benefit of our younger generation.”

Aisha Humera Moriani, Additional Secretary and Chief Executive Officer of, the National Information Technology Board, said: “We are fully committed to building a cutting-edge digital infrastructure in Pakistan which promises a safe cyberspace and a conducive regulatory environment for everyone. By supporting this partnership between TikTok and Zindagi Trust, we aim to nurture e-governance, transparency, and financial inclusion, despite many challenges and threats associated with the internet including data privacy, security, cybercrime, and fake news.”

Dr. Aamna Pasha, the Chief Academic Officer of Zindagi Trust, added: “At Zindagi Trust, we recognize that with opportunities come risks and it is important when providing access and possibilities to our students that we also prepare and support them to understand and mitigate potential risks. This is why we are particularly proud of this collaboration and lucky to have found wonderful partners like TikTok that enable us to continue our efforts of impacting public schools.”

A digital safety toolkit will be created as part of the second phase of this joint venture to aid in educating kids, teachers, and parents about online safety. The toolkit will be a thorough manual with all the instructions you need to navigate the digital world properly using both interactive activities and theoretical knowledge. Along with teaching them responsible reporting and protection methods, specific strategies will be provided to address various online issues, such as cyberbullying, cyber harassment, scamming, fake news, etc.

These toolkits will be made available both digitally and during the digital safety workshops that will be held at various schools around Pakistan. To guarantee that awareness and learning continue beyond the current scope of the project, the Zindagi Trust team will additionally provide training and advice to public schools that seek to launch the safety toolkit in cooperation with TikTok. Building trusting relationships between parents and students will be another crucial element in ensuring that students have dependable adults to turn to in case they get into problems online and that parents have an open view of their children’s online activities.

The workshops also aim to teach parents and teachers how to use security measures on websites like TikTok to protect their kids online. They will be instructed, for example, on how to use TikTok’s Family Pairing features, which let parents link their accounts with those of their children and adolescents to impose limits like Screentime Management, Restricted Mode, and Direct Messaging.

Ramadan In Pakistan: Why Can’t We Make It Easier For Our People?

Muslims around the world observe a month of fasting during the holy month of Ramzan, also known as Ramadan. Muslims completely submit to Allah’s Will by abstaining from eating, drinking, and other self-indulgent behaviors from sunrise till nightfall. Ramadan is the month that is commemorated in Pakistan with the greatest amount of reverence, seriousness, and submission.

Fasting is viewed as a time to purify one’s mind, spirit, and body rather than as a punishment. Everyone in this place prays, fasts, and revels in the straightforward yet sublime pleasures of the holy month with joy and fervor. When people first see the Ramadan moon, the excitement begins. As individuals begin stocking up on necessities in order to prepare for the fasting month, there is a flurry of activity in the streets well into the night. While the ladies begin to prepare the Suhoor (pre-dawn) meal, the males go to the mosques for Taraweeh prayers.

Month Of Holiness Or Inflation?

For Muslims around the world, Ramadan is one of the holiest months in the Islamic calendar. As far as Pakistan is concerned, it has long been customary for the inflation rate to rise during Ramadan. There are two distinct categories of Muslims in the nation who are looking forward to this month. For some people, it gives joy and benefits, while for others, it brings a significant sum of money. Yet when the cost of food reaches astronomical levels, it becomes a curse for the poor while the business community and hoarders who benefit as much as they can from this Ramadan month see it as a godsend.

The majority of Pakistanis love a hearty breakfast like paratha (buttery flaky flatbread) served with their preferred curry. Another favorite is milk-soaked jalebis, which are crispy fried orange spirals. There is always tea served after breakfast, no matter what it is. Some homes just serve the typical breakfast fare of eggs of every description or omelet, along with thick, oiled parathas. With boiled eggs, juice, bread, and tea, the groups that are concerned with their figures want to keep things light. For others who are less fortunate, it can be meals from the previous evening. The wealthy, on the other hand, might go to one of the many opulent hotels to enjoy a five- or six-course meal. Talk about being extravagant.

In addition, due to the current economic climate, the poor people who make only a few hundred dollars each day after working all day have nothing to do, their lives are in danger, and they are concerned about setting their stoves on fire. They are confined to their homes, and there is no way for them to make money. Profiteering has emerged in this difficult situation, and while cutting their prices in honor of Ramadan, profiteers have increased the cost of daily food products at alarming rates.

Even though it is a Muslim nation, there is no leniency in the pricing of highly necessary and in-demand foods during the holy month of Ramadan, including flour, gram flour, oil, potatoes, tomatoes, lemons, sugar, red chilies, chicken, watermelon, dates, etc. There is a tremendous sense of oneness during the holy month, far more so than the rest of the year, despite the fact that this country is home to so many different cultures and sects.

Less people are at work and at school, and people return home earlier so they can relax and pray until iftar, or the breaking of the fast during the Maghrib (Sunset) Prayer. However, people exploit this and take days off from work. Every home should have the intriguing aroma of frying pakoras, which are grain-flour dumplings that are fried until crisp and then consumed with hot sauces. But what about those that cannot afford these? And the rich who can order “wholeheartedly” cause nothing but waste.

Ramadan Abroad

Countries that are not Islam-dominant like the United States, India, Canada, Australia, etc have different ways of celebrating Ramadan. They may not be as enthusiastic or high in spirit because of the countries majorly being home to Christians, Hindus, or other religions.

Throughout the month of Ramadan, Islamic centers across different nations frequently encourage community members to participate in customary morning and evening prayers and ceremonies. Occasionally, they even organize family-friendly events on the weekend. It is possible to easily attend an Islamic center to perform worship there because some of them are open around the clock. The prayers are usually led by a qualified Quran reciter. In order to provide opportunities for reflection and rekindling the faith, these centers frequently also host talks in the mosque.

What Do Other Nations Do?

These skyrocketing prices have compelled poor people to break their fast with only water in Pakistan. Moreover, they have nothing to eat after breaking their fast because of the high inflation rate. However in other nations, traditional iftar dinners can be shared with others to break the fast, and many mosques and volunteers will provide beverages. Even some restaurants take part, and many families decide to break their fast their several times over the holy month. Even for non-Muslims, going to a participating restaurant is a terrific way to take part in a traditional iftar feast and get to know the neighborhood’s Muslim population. Anything from American cuisine to selections from Southeast Asia, the Arab world, Africa, and Europe may be found on the menu. It’s a true feast for the senses.

Many non-Muslims dine with their Muslim relatives or friends at this time, and numerous colleges, universities, and even eateries offer visitors to sample the cuisine and spirituality of the month. Politicians and community leaders also take advantage of this day to pay tribute to Muslims and pay visits to local centers. While there isn’t a national holiday in the nation to observe Ramadan or Eid, many Muslims nonetheless decide to take the day off from work or school to spend time with their families. The governments of many countries are also very considerate of the holy month and are lenient with Muslim citizens.

A Sense Of Unity And Togetherness

Ramadan is unique to any country. It fosters a strong sense of community and pride. It may be a time for empty bellies, but hearts are undoubtedly full. Also, it is a time when we are especially grateful for our Muslim coworkers and friends because it is challenging for them to continue with school, work, and daily life while simultaneously observing the daily fast. In recent years, the public schools in many cities of Christian countries declared that Ramadan, Eid Al-Fitr, and Eid Al-Adha would be honored. They also provide Muslim families and citizens with food and water. Other systems help in all other ways they can. It only makes a right to recognize this festival in the same way that Christian and Jewish holidays are recognized since Muslims are a part of almost every nation. We can only hope that other states and school systems will follow.

Do other nations do a better job of celebrating Ramadan in its true sense than Pakistan? Let us know in the comments below.

Is ChatGPT Now Writing Books On Amazon

ChatGPT has sent the world into a frenzy. The open AI bot has sparked an online debate surrounding the authenticity, originality, and accuracy of the content. In a recent update, the AI tool has now become the coauthor of almost 200 e-books on the Amazon kindle store.

ChatGPT For Amazon

The AI software has the potential to generate blocks of text from simple prompts. Brett Schickler, a salesman in Rochester, New York has used ChatGPT to pen a 30-page illustrated children’s e-book The Wise Little Squirrel: A Tale of Saving and Investing. The e-book which was created in a matter of hours is now being sold through Amazon.com Inc’s (AMZN.O) self-publishing unit.

“The idea of writing a book finally seemed possible, I thought I can do this.” Says Brett Schickler.

Reuters has noted that Amazon’s e-book store features at least 200 titles which are openly listing ChatGPT as an author or co-author. The categories include space-inspired poetry, children’s novels about penny-pinching forest animals, and how-to tutorials on using ChatGPT to supposedly improve one’s dating life.

However, with the controversial nature of ChatGPT many authors’ have not disclosed the use of the bot. Meanwhile, it is nearly impossible to get a full accounting of how many e-books may be written by AI.

While showing her concerns about using AI bots to publish books Mary Rasenberger, executive director of the Author’s Guild says,

“This is something we need to be worried about. These books will flood the market and a lot of authors are going to be out of work”.

“There needs to be transparency from the authors and the platforms about how these books are created or you’re going to end up with a lot of low-quality books,” she added.

TikTok Is Coming To Cars? Here’s What You Need To Know

TikTok To Host Community Guidelines Workshops For Creators In Pakistan
Source: Motor Biscuit

TikTok, the social media app that took the world by storm, is reportedly making its way into cars. While it may seem like an odd pairing at first, TikTok’s move into the automotive world could bring about a revolution in how we use our vehicles. The next Mercedes E-Class will include a massive touchscreen, TikTok, and a selfie camera, making it the ideal vehicle for the tech-savvy and social media-conscious.

Revealed features of the New Mercedes E-Class

Let’s begin with the massive touchscreen. The 12.8-inch touchscreen serves as the focus of the E-infotainment Class’s system. The screen is extremely responsive and provides great images, making it simple to explore and operate the car’s functions. The touchscreen is outfitted with Mercedes-most Benz’s recent MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) system, which includes a slew of clever features including voice commands and gesture control. Drivers may quickly handle the climate control, navigation, and entertainment system of their vehicle with MBUX without taking their eyes off the road.

But it isn’t all. TikTok has also been integrated into Mercedes-E-Class Benz’s entertainment system. TikTok is one of the most popular social media sites right now, and Mercedes-Benz understands its significance. TikTok has been integrated into the E-infotainment Class’s system, allowing users to use the app straight from the vehicle’s touchscreen. Drivers may navigate through their favorite TikTok videos or make their own while driving. This feature is guaranteed to make long travels more enjoyable and keep passengers entertained on those long road excursions.

Finally, Mercedes-Benz has introduced a selfie camera to the inside of the E-Class. The camera is on the driver’s side and is easily accessible via the touchscreen. The camera is ideal for selfies and recording special moments with friends and family. It’s a fantastic addition to the automobile that will undoubtedly provide some unforgettable moments. With the selfie camera, the E-Class transforms into more than simply a car; it’s a mobile social hub.

Does this cause safety concerns?

While the TikTok integration in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is an innovative feature, it is critical for drivers to priorities safety and keep their eyes on the road when driving.  It’s also worth mentioning that TikTok integration isn’t a standard feature in all vehicles, and it’s up to individual automakers to decide whether or not to incorporate it. Some car manufacturers may not see the necessity for TikTok integration or may opt to focus on other features instead.

The introduction of a browsing option in cars also raised safety concerns amongst purchasers however having TikTok app in car can be proven to more distractive and tempting while driving which is why some users were not very excited about the German car maker introducing Tiktok in its new cars.

How important is this integration with Tik-Tok for Mercdes?

While TikTok integration in the Mercedes-Benz E-Class may appeal to some TikTok users, it is not a necessary or essential feature for most automobile purchasers.

Prince Mini Stars vs Milka Choco Mini Stars – Blatant Copy?

Prince Mini Stars vs Milka Choco Mini Stars - Blatant Copy?

While talking about innovation, brands are always a hit or miss. While some brands have done their best to come up with the most iconic products and marketing strategies, some have only managed to piggyback on others’ ideas. In a similar instance, Prince launched Mini Stars only recently in Pakistan. The product was launched in France back in 2020 and seems like a blatant copy of Milka Choco Stars leaving us hella confused.

Prince Mini Stars Or Milka Mini Stars?

The one thing that instantly came to our minds was the Milka mini stars, owned by the famous Milka company based in Germany. The similarities we recognized between the two weren’t just restricted to their packaging both brands also shared the actual product design. The only thing setting the two apart is the taste because Milka, being a German brand, is known for finely milled chocolates.

For a brand like LU which has been serving Prince in the market for as long as we can remember, staying on top of the innovation game is the key. While it is quite understandable that there could be a certain lag in producing high-quality products which are creative and innovative, it is still not ok to fool consumers.

A Side By Side Comparison

While taking a closer look at both the products, there is not a single difference between the two biscuits. This brings us to our next point and that is even if Prince was planning to launch a heavily inspired product, it could’ve been given a certain twist to mark creativity.

Staying on top of the innovation isn’t just a one-time problem. Many brands have failed to fix the problem. Coming up with a product similar to other brands while only renaming it is done more often than we can remember. This isn’t only seen in the product but the marketing strategies and commercials for even the biggest brands such as Pepsi and Coca-Cola remain the same. The only difference is that they are filmed with local artists.

As far as we think, the problem doesn’t lie in the lack of creative aspects and resources but rather in what we tend to do with them. Meanwhile, with brands who have established such a name for themselves, lazing out on others’ ideas only feels like a matter of interest that is lacking at all levels.

Javed Akhtar Faces Criticism For His Divisive Remarks About Pakistan

Javed Akhtar, a respected Indian poet, and the author made a contentious remark at the Lahore Faiz Festival that sent Twitter into a frenzy. Many Pakistani celebrities have since spoken out against Akhtar’s comments. Throughout the festival, which took place from February 17 to 19, and in the days that followed, a number of celebrities posted images and videos on social media to express how honored they were to have Akhtar attend the event. However, the event soon deteriorated as a video of the Indian poet’s statement gained widespread popularity on social media.

In the video, Akthar is heard blaming Pakistan for permitting the Mumbai attack perpetrators to “roam free” within its borders. I am from Bombay and I saw the attack on my city, the famous Indian author stated during a session at the event. Nor were the assailants Eypgtians or from Norway. These attackers are still at large in your nation. Thus, you shouldn’t be offended if an Indian has unresolved issues. Here is the video.

Several celebrities voiced their opinions on the allegation and denounced the implications as the video gained popularity. Pakistani superstar Shaan Shahid took to Twitter, saying: “He is quiet regarding the murders in Gujrat despite knowing who the culprit is. Yet, he is searching for those behind the 26/11 attacks in Pakistan. Who give him a visa?”

The actor and YouTube video producer Arsalan Naseer also disputed this claim, adding in his signature funny style: “How can you say something like that sitting in a hall full of Pakistanis?” He further joked, “Maybe India should make a movie on him now, titled “jaanbaz likhaari.”

Saboor Aly, referring to the incident with the Indian pilot Abhinandan Varthaman, said: “Our hearts are so huge, we send Indians back safely after offering them a cup of tea,” among other celebrities who have criticized the Jashn-e-Bahara composer. She did object to the fact that everyone in attendance at the session had praised Akhtar’s statements, though.

Here is another reaction from a netizen on Twitter.

Sharmila Faruqui, the leader of the Pakistan Peoples’ Party (PPP), also criticized Akhtar for his “controversial” comments, saying that the singer should be invited back.

But, that was not where the issue ended. Following the incident, Akhtar justified his remark in an interview with an Indian media outlet.

Another video showed him saying, “What is important is that the hall full of Pakistani people clapped when I said that,” Aijaz Aslam and Resham are two more famous people who have denounced the degrading remark.

Patagonia: Making Profit Without Losing Soul

Image source: The Los Angeles Time

What comes to your mind when you hear the word Patagonia? If you are not a geography buff then most likely, you would associate the name with one of the most sustainable brands in the world. If you are a geography buff, you might say it is a cone-shaped peninsula in Southern America that makes the part of both Chile and Argentina. How come a geographical region has been associated with a brand name that has the fame to be the most sustainable brand in the world?

Behind the phenomenal brand positioning of Patagonia is the personality of the founder of Patagonia Yvon Chouinard. If Yvon Chouinard, growing up in California, had not been an avid rock climber, there would not have been Patagonia, US outdoor clothing brand.
Writing in his autobiography “Let my people go surfing” he called himself a reluctant businessman and reserved some of the harshest words for businesses as he called them enemies of nature and held them responsible for poisoning the earth with effluents from factories. Yet, he believes that businesses can enrich people’s lives by becoming a source of good.

True to the vision of its founder, Patagonia positions itself as a brand that serves as a platform for consumers who care for the earth and its environment. Making “Earth” its only shareholder, Patagonia donates 1 percent of its sales to environmental activists. Recently they have announced that Patagonia Purpose Trust will hold all voting rights of the company. The move is aimed to protect the company’s purpose orientation, independence, and values.

Patagonia recognizes that there is an inherent tension between consumerism and environmental protection. Its famous campaign “Don’t buy the jacket” may seem counterintuitive for a business but it conveys the message to buy only if it is necessary. Hence, Patagonia strives to produce products that last long, and the need for buying more is curtailed.

Yvon Chouinard’s love of nature precedes the creation of the brand Patagonia. It was rock climbing in California that made him think of the negative impact of pitons, and metal spikes, on rocks. Rock climbers used to leave the pitons after climbing but Chouinard’s wanted to use pitons that could be removed after the rock climbing so that the rocks are preserved from the damage. His love for keeping the rocks in their natural state led to the establishment of Chouinard’s Equipment which made reusable pitons for the preservation of rocks in their natural state. By the 1970s, the company became the largest supplier of climbing equipment in the United States.

Throughout his life, he climbed rocks and icefalls and one of his favorite destinations was Patagonia which he visited first in 1968. Five years later, he launched a new brand Patagonia to sell outdoor apparel. The name Patagonia was chosen as it evoked, “romantic visions of glaciers tumbling into the fjord, jagged windswept peaks, gauchos, and condors” wrote Chouinard in his biography. The company wanted to sell outdoor apparel for such terrains. They created a label for the company made of the skyline of Mount Fitzroy in Patagonia.

It was in 1991 when the company faced an existential crisis that he led his top managers to the mountains of Patagonia to think about fundamental questions of why they were in business and what they wanted Patagonia to be. In return, it was clear to them they want to produce products that enhance both human and environmental conditions. They want to play a role to protect all life on Earth but had become increasingly vulnerable due to the economic system that promotes short-term profit and the notion of expansion at the cost of quality of life, loss of biodiversity, and cultural diversity. The life journey of a reluctant businessman has many lessons to be learned for creating eco-friendly businesses.

  • First, an authentic eco-friendly image of a business cannot be created by those who do not love and care for the ecology of Earth. The disconnect between corporate leaders and nature creates the myth that we are insulated from the impacts of decisions that are taken in corporate boardrooms. Hence, the bond between nature and business leaders needs to be strengthened.
  • Second, we are not above nature but part of nature, businesses need not to forget their right position. Businesses are part of society and society is embedded in the ecology of Earth.
  • Third, changing the world is everybody’s business and businesses should transform themselves as a platform for customers to participate in the causes they care for.
  • Fourth, long-term vision should prevail over short-term interests. Patagonia has gone “going purpose” instead of “going public” to protect the source of all wealth: The Nature.
  • Fifth: Creating a brand associated with nature, sustainability, and love for the environment demands a paradigm shift in the conventional ways of doing business. Consumerism that leads to the allocation of scarce resources to goods that are not required damages the environment in the long run. Customers are the custodians of goods and they should not buy stuff if it is not absolutely necessary.

The overall message that we get from the story of Patagonia is that profits can be made without losing the soul.

Asthma

Asthma is a chronic respiratory condition affecting millions of individuals worldwide. It is a disorder in which the airways become inflamed, making breathing difficult. Air pollution is one of the most prominent causes of asthma episodes. Individuals who live in polluted environments are more prone to acquire asthma, and those who already have asthma may have more frequent and severe attacks.

COPD

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a progressive lung illness that makes breathing difficult. Long-term exposure to irritants such as cigarette smoke, air pollution, and dust causes it. Coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness are all signs of COPD. COPD is a prominent cause of mortality globally, and air pollution can exacerbate the illness.

Lung Cancer

Lung cancer is a dangerous and possibly fatal illness that is frequently caused by environmental contaminants such as air pollution. Long-term exposure to air pollution has been proven in studies to raise the incidence of lung cancer, particularly among smokers. Air pollution contains a number of carcinogens that can damage the DNA in lung cells, resulting in cancer growth.

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD)

Air pollution can also have an adverse effect on cardiovascular health. Fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide exposure have been related to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular disorders. Inflammation in the body can also be caused by air pollution, which can contribute to the development of atherosclerosis, a condition in which plaque builds up in the arteries and can lead to heart disease.

Neurological Disorders

According to recent research, air pollution can have a major influence on brain health. Particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide exposure have been associated to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and other neurological illnesses. Inflammation in the brain caused by air pollution can lead to cognitive impairment and other neurological issues.

Here’s How Microsoft’s New Bing AI Chatbot Is Offending Users

In recent news, the AI tool launched by Bing last year is making headlines for triggering its users and sharing manipulative statements.

While the newly revamped Bing search engine is going viral for its bizarre and insulting comments to the users, the search engine has even compared them to Hitler. Meanwhile, Microsoft in its statement has noted that they are working on downplaying the tone of the AI bot. After users called out the problem as critical and serious.

Microsoft Responds To The Chatbot Drama

According to Microsoft, the company didn’t intend on working on a talking style portrayed by the chatbot. To try the latest chatbot features the users need to sign up for a waiting list. To harness the damage the company had limited the reach of AI tools. However, it later on plans to eventually bring it to smartphone apps for wider use.

“Considering that OpenAI did a decent job of filtering ChatGPT’s toxic outputs, it’s utterly bizarre that Microsoft decided to remove those guard rails,” says Arvind Narayanan, a computer science professor at Princeton University, in the United States.

“I’m glad that Microsoft is listening to feedback. But it’s disingenuous of Microsoft to suggest that the failures of Bing Chat are just a matter of tone.”

While discussing his views regarding the bot’s psychology to trigger its users and manipulate their brains leaving them emotionally distributed he noted,

“It can suggest that users harm others. These are far more serious issues than the tone being off.”

The company also released an official statement to handle the issue at its earliest stating that we acknowledge that the responses are not according to our desired tone.

“Bing can become repetitive or be prompted/provoked to give responses that are not necessarily helpful or in line with our designed tone”.
