Apple's Potential Ban On FaceTime And iMessage Is Raising Concerns

Apple has issued a warning to the United Kingdom (UK) that it might withdraw its services, FaceTime and iMessage if the government proceeds with amendments to surveillance laws. These changes would require tech companies to make significant privacy and security alterations.

The UK government aims to update the Investigatory Powers Act (IPA), which grants the British Home Office the power to compel tech companies to disable security features like end-to-end encryption without informing the public. The act also allows companies to store internet browsing records and collect personal data in bulk from UK users.

Apple’s Response 

Apple has expressed strong opposition to the proposed changes and has submitted a nine-page document criticizing the amendments. The company disagrees with the requirement to inform the Home Office about security feature changes before release, as well as the immediate disabling of security features without review or appeals.

They also argue that implementing such feature changes might compromise public knowledge and views the proposals as a significant threat to data security and privacy, not only in the UK but globally. Apple refuses to weaken product security for users in one country and has thus threatened to remove FaceTime and iMessage from the UK if the amendments are passed.

Further Details 

Furthermore, Apple and Signal, a messaging app, object to a clause in the act that would enable the government to mandate technology for scanning encrypted messaging apps and services for child sexual abuse material (CSAM). Signal has also threatened to leave the UK due to this particular issue.

The UK government has initiated an eight-week consultation process on the proposed changes, open to professional bodies, academia, interest groups, and the public. The outcome remains to be seen as tech companies and privacy advocates continue to express concerns over potential implications on data security and user privacy.

Toyota Manufacturer Halts Production Plant For Two Weeks

Indus Motor Company Limited, a major car manufacturer firm in Pakistan’s automotive industry and the maker of Toyota vehicles has temporarily closed its production plant for two weeks due to challenges in importing raw materials. The company faced disruptions in its supply chain, leading to insufficient inventory levels for production.

Last month, the company briefly halted production for similar reasons, but the current situation has worsened. Difficulties in opening letters of credit (LCs) and supply problems from foreign vendors have compounded the issue, leaving the company with no choice but to halt production temporarily.

Challenge For The Whole Industry 

The plant will remain closed from July 21, 2023, to August 3, 2023. Indus Motors is not alone in facing these challenges, as other prominent automotive manufacturers like Pak Suzuki Motors and Honda Cars have also experienced shutdown days in recent months due to raw material scarcity.

The entire automotive sector, along with other industries is dependent on imported raw materials and has been grappling with these issues due to a shortage of foreign exchange reserves in Pakistan. The struggle to open LCs has severely impacted the supply chain and disrupted production activities.

Indus Motors has a significant presence in Pakistan’s automobile industry and has invested $100 million in the local production of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). The company plays a vital role in establishing the local automotive ecosystem, with over 50 part manufacturers contributing to the value chain daily. Moreover, the company has 53 independently owned authorized dealerships providing aftersales service, creating employment opportunities for over 450,000 people directly and indirectly across Pakistan.

The temporary closure poses challenges for the company, its employees, and the overall automobile industry in Pakistan. The management of Indus Motor Company Limited is likely to explore solutions to address the raw material scarcity and resume operations as soon as possible.

Empowering Girls’ Education: Breaking Social Dogmas

Despite having the fifth largest population in the world, Pakistan stands out as a country where the female literacy rate is alarmingly low. According to the Global Gender Gap Report, the country stands at 146th position, with more than 53 percent of women deprived of education, training, and employment.

Recently, this issue was addressed by English Biscuit Manufacturers in an interesting and out-of-the-box way. EBM presented young schoolgirls on leading news channels as newscasters on World Human Rights Day.

They provided a platform for young girls to advocate for their basic right to education and urged parents to send every daughter to school, which can have a valuable impact on society at large.

These girls talked about discouraging societal norms that have hindered their access to education. One of the girls said that they face gender discrimination in all aspects of life. She added that they are not even allowed to think about pursuing education.

They also explained that socio-economic issues are also hurdles for them to receive adequate educational opportunities: “The pre-existing social dogmas that women are not supposed to study but rather focus on being better at household-related chores only have not left society. No matter how much we try, the situation does not change.” said the girls.
The girls have big dreams and are ambitious to achieve success, but are left with grief and sorrow due to the backward thinking of society: “I dream of becoming a teacher or a doctor one day, but every time my parents say they want me to just get married all of my aims get shattered.” expressed one of the girls.

The girls thanked EBM for the efforts they are making to promote young girls’ education and applauded the campaign for giving hope that these prevalent issues related to girls’ education in Pakistan will soon be eradicated.

The Schoolgirl Newscasters campaign bagged immense praise on social media as well and recorded 180 million impressions. The campaign made a significant global impact as it became the first Pakistani campaign ever to win a Cannes Glass Gold Award – widely considered one of the most prestigious awards in advertising. It won a series of international awards, including the D&AD Award, the Caples UK Award, the Dubai Lynx Award, and the Clio Award.

MD and CEO of EBM Dr Zeelaf Munir, while speaking at Cannes, said that this Lion is the making of a better future for millions of girls in Pakistan. She believed that presenting schoolgirls reading the evening news was a great way to bring the spotlight on the change we can achieve through educating the girl child. Dr. Zeelaf Munir added that the award has also emphasized the power of creativity. She acknowledged the partners and the entire EBM team for their noteworthy efforts.

The Schoolgirl Newscasters Campaign is just the beginning of educating society on how educating young girls can be prosperous for the future of the country. Hopefully, EBM’s work will be an inspiration and a new era of purposeful messaging in the campaigns of Pakistan’s corporate sector.

PAKISTAN, July 20, 2023 – TikTok, the leading destination for short videos, has released its latest Community Guidelines Enforcement Report for the first quarter of 2023 (January-March 2023), furthering its dedication to combat misinformation and creating a safe and inclusive space. The report underscores TikTok’s ongoing commitment to earning trust through accountability and maintaining a safe and welcoming environment for its community.

During Q1 2023, a total of 91,003,510 videos were removed globally, which accounts for approximately 0.6% of all videos uploaded to TikTok. Out of these, 53,494,911 videos were removed through automated systems, while 6,209,835 videos were restored after review.

In Pakistan, 11,707,020 videos were removed for violating Community Guidelines in Q1 2023. To compare, Pakistan saw the removal of 12,628,267 videos for violating Community Guidelines in Q4 2022. Alongside addressing Community Guidelines violations, TikTok proactively targeted spam accounts and associated content, taking preventive measures to curb the creation of automated spam accounts.

During Q1 2023, 83% of the violative videos in Pakistan were removed before anyone could view them, and approximately 92.2% of such videos were eliminated within a day. The proactive removal rate for Q1 2023 stood at 98.8%.

Globally, TikTok removed 16,947,484 accounts suspected to belong to users under the age of 13, prioritizing the safety of young users. Additionally, 51,298,135 fake accounts were removed during the first quarter, highlighting TikTok’s efforts to counter fraudulent activity.

TikTok’s Community Guidelines are designed to foster a safe, inclusive, and authentic experience for all users. These policies apply to everyone and all types of content, with TikTok striving to ensure consistency and equity in their enforcement.

TikTok utilizes a combination of innovative technology and human review to identify, assess, and take action against content that violates its Community Guidelines. In Karachi on 20th July 2023, it’s with great excitement that Standard Chartered, in collaboration with INNOVentures Global (Pvt.) Ltd., announces the launch of the 5th cohort of its Women in Tech (WiT) program in Pakistan.

As a flagship initiative of Futuremakers by Standard Chartered, the bank’s global endeavor to combat inequality and promote economic inclusion, WiT aims to bridge the gender gap in entrepreneurship. Through this program, the Bank provides support to female-led enterprises by offering business management training and mentoring through its award-winning accelerator program.

Since its launch in Pakistan in 2019, this initiative has garnered interest from over 1200 female-led enterprises, with 88 female founders actively participating in the bank’s accelerator program. Following their graduation from the accelerator, 26 of these enterprises even secured seed funding after their final pitches.

WhatsApp Back Online After One-Hour Global Outage

Meta Platforms resolved global WhatsApp connectivity issues, including Pakistan, following reports of app access problems on Wednesday, as tracked by Downdetector.com. In response, the WhatsApp Twitter account posted, “We’re back, happy chatting!”. WhatsApp outages occur when the messaging platform experiences disruptions or technical issues that prevent users from accessing or using its services. These outages can affect users globally or in specific regions, causing inconvenience and frustration for millions of people who rely on WhatsApp for communication.

Earlier, Meta acknowledged disruptions in receiving and delivering messages on WhatsApp, as indicated on their status dashboard. The outages occurred around 1:00 am in Pakistan, affecting users for at least an hour, according to Downdetector.com.  Approximately 6,000 users lodged complaints on the tracking website, which collects reports from various sources, including user-submitted errors.

In addition, more than 177,000 users faced WhatsApp issues in the United Kingdom, 37,000 in the US, and nearly 15,000 encountered problems in India while using the messaging app.

According to the Henley Passport Index, Pakistan holds the fourth weakest passport globally. Out of 227 countries evaluated, Pakistan ranks 100th, granting its citizens access to only 33 visa-free destinations. Meanwhile, Singapore clinches the top spot with a remarkable 193 visa-free destinations, followed by Germany, Italy, and Spain.

The rankings show a decline for the United States and the United Kingdom. While the UK has improved, moving to the fourth position, the US now sits at the eighth spot, providing visa-free access to 183 destinations.

The Henley Passport Index, which relies on International Air Transport Association (IATA) data, is regularly updated to reflect visa policy changes. Over the years, the average number of visa-free destinations for travelers has nearly doubled, rising from 58 in 2006 to 109 in 2023.

Despite this progress, a considerable disparity in travel freedom remains between the top and bottom-ranked nations. Conflict-ridden countries such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria have the least travel privileges, with access to just 27, 29, and 30 destinations, respectively.

Henley & Partners emphasized the general trend towards greater travel freedom, as people now enjoy more opportunities to explore the world without visa constraints. However, this index underscores the ongoing challenges faced by nationals from certain countries in accessing international destinations freely.

When you need to send a message to an unfamiliar number, simply start a fresh chat on WhatsApp. Type in the number in the search bar, and that’s it! A shiny Chat button will magically appear next to it. Now, you can dive into a conversation without the hassle of adding them to your contacts list.

Excitingly, reports from WABetaInfo confirm that this awesome feature is already available on the latest WhatsApp versions for both iPhone and Android devices. But wait, there’s more!
