Shahid Afridi Advocates for Long-Term Captaincy in Pakistan Cricket

Former captain Shahid Afridi has advocated for a more stable approach to captaincy in Pakistan cricket, urging the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to appoint a long-term captain.

In a recent media interaction during a Sports Academy project, the former allrounder emphasized the need for the PCB to appoint a captain for an extended tenure, spanning two to three years.

“PCB should announce the captain for two to three years so that the captaincy debate can come to an end,” said Afridi.

Afridi believes that such a move would effectively quell the ongoing debate and conflicts in the team surrounding the captaincy, fostering stability and continuity within the team.

Afridi also proposed the elimination of the vice-captaincy role across all formats for the Men in Green. According to him, in the absence of the captain, the responsibility should naturally shift to a player deemed suitable for the task at hand, eliminating the need for a designated vice-captain.

“There is no need to appoint anyone as vice-captain. If the captain is not available for any reason, assign the captaincy responsibility to a player who seems suitable,” he added.

His comments came in the light of the fact that Shaheen Afridi was handed T20I captaincy only until the upcoming T20I World Cup, with Mohammad Rizwan as his deputy.

Shahid Afridi also asserted his weight behind Mohammad Hafeez, stating that he should be given more time in his role as Pakistan’s team director.

“[Mohammad] Hafeez has played a lot of cricket, he should be given more time [as team director],” said Afridi. “If someone thinks that everything will change in one series, it is wrong thinking.”

Notably, Mohammad Hafeez replaced Mickey Arthur as the director of the Pakistan cricket team in November last year.

The supplementary draft of the upcoming Pakistan Super League (PSL) took place over a conference call yesterday, with each franchise picking replacement players for their injured or partially available players.

Local players like Haider Ali, Arshad Iqbal, and Zahid Mehmood were roped in by Islamabad United, Peshawar Zalmi and Karachi Kings respectively, after being ignored in the initial PSL Draft. However, seasoned campaigners Ahmad Shahzad and Sharjeel Khan once again failed to attract the franchises.

Multan Sultans is the only franchise that is not facing the headache of their player’s availability, resulting in their absence from the replacement draft.

They picked hard-hitting West Indies batter, Johnson Charles and the exciting 19-year-old Muhammad Shahzad as supplementary picks.

Let’s take a look at which teams made the best decisions to bolster their squads during the PSL 9 supplementary draft.

Peshawar Zalmi

The Zalmis made the most out of the supplementary draft, picking some amazing bowlers to compliment their strong batting line-up.

The State Bank of Pakistan, led by Governor Jameel Ahmed, announced a significant initiative to introduce new currency notes across all denominations. This decision aims to bolster security features and address the issue of counterfeit currency circulating within Pakistan. Indian star batter Virat Kohli is arguably the greatest batter to ever grace the cricket field, however, Pakistan all-rounder Aamir Jamal does not see him as a GOAT (greatest of all time).

Virat Kohli in his 14-year international career has amassed over 25000 runs across all three formats and is the holder of many records. He recently became the first batter to score 50 centuries in ODI cricket during the ICC World Cup 2023.

Mohsin Naqvi emerged as the next potential chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) since Zaka Ashraf’s resignation. However, he has to go through the electoral process of the PCB to assume charge of the chairmanship.

Yesterday, the Election Commissioner of PCB Shah Khawar called for a special meeting of the Board of Governors (BoG) on February 6, 2024. This development, confirmed by the PCB on Monday, marks a significant step in the governance of Pakistan’s cricketing affairs.

The upcoming meeting sets the stage for potential leadership changes, with Mohsin Naqvi being the favourite to be elected as the chairman.

When will the PCB Chairman take charge?

If the scheduled election proceeds as planned on February 8, Naqvi, upon retiring from his caretaker Chief Minister role in Punjab, could assume the helm of the PCB within a week of the election results being declared.

According to the PCB Constitution of 2014, Election Commissioner Shah Khawar, who also serves as the Acting Chairman of the PCB, has invoked the necessary provisions to convene the meeting.

Emphasizing the importance of attendance, all 11 board members, including prominent figures like Mustafa Ramde, Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, and Sajjad Ali Khokhar, have been mandated to participate.

Notably, Shah Khawar assumed charge as the Acting Chairman of the PCB after the resignation of Zaka Ashraf from the PCB Management Committee.

His appointment came in light of the Clause 2 of Article 7 of the PCB Constitution which dictates that in the absence of a Chairman, all powers are delegated to the Chief Election Commissioner.

Al Jabri also highlighted the common practice of conducting marriage contracts at the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina due to space constraints and the desire to accommodate numerous invitees, as well as beliefs in the blessings associated with such ceremonies.

The initial news came out last week that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) banned three women cricket players over their involvement in a physical altercation.

However, the truth came out later, reflecting the fact that two players – Sadaf Shams and Yusra Amir physically assaulted Ayesha Bilal, leaving her with a bloodied nose.

Ayesha Bilal kept her lips tight for two days before ultimately lodging a complaint against her teammates, prompting the PCB’s intervention. Following her complaint, the PCB took swift action, temporarily banning all three women cricket players from participating in the tournament.

Moreover, Women’s Wing Chairperson Tania Malik intervened promptly, acknowledging the seriousness of the matter and initiating steps towards reconciliation. PCB then released a video on social media, indicating the end of the dispute between the players.

The video showed national team captain Nida Dar engaging in candid cricket talks with the involved players – Sadaf Shams, Yusra Amir, and Ayesha Bilal.

The details and the reason for the dispute between Pakistan women players have not come out yet, leaving fans wondering what led to this gruesome encounter.

Although, sources reveal that the PCB has obtained detailed accounts of the dispute with the help of statements provided by the team manager and fellow cricketers but they have not publicized them.
