Rising food prices have already made it tough for many families to afford a proper breakfast. Now, the cost of tea is going up as well, both for branded and loose tea.

On Monday, packers and traders increased the prices by Rs100 for 900-gram branded packs and around Rs200 per kilogram for loose tea. This sudden increase shocked consumers.

The reason for this increase is that the value of the Pakistani rupee has fallen a lot, which has made imported black tea more expensive. The exchange rate of the US dollar went up by about 2.9% under the interim government, making things more expensive.

For example, a small pack of branded tea that used to cost Rs170 now costs Rs180, and a larger pack that used to be Rs330 now costs Rs350.

Experts say that if the rupee continues losing value, tea prices might go up even more. Also, the rising cost of diesel is making transportation more expensive.

Tea imports in Pakistan have gone down a bit, and people are worried because prices are going up for other things like milk, sugar, bread, and butter as well. This is making breakfast really hard for many families, especially those with lower incomes.

Nestlé Pakistan And LUMS Commemorate World Water Week By Underscoring The Need For Innovative Irrigation Solutions

Nestlé Pakistan and the Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) organized a panel discussion on August 21 on the need for innovative irrigation solutions to decrease water wastage and improve yield, as part of their World Water Week activities.  World Water Week, which is organized between August 20 and 24 this year, highlights global water challenges and explores new ways of managing water.

During his remarks, Dr. Abu Bakr Muhammad, Director Center for Water Informatics & Technology (WIT), LUMS, iterated the need to place water at the core of action plans and policy.  He said, “There is an urgent need for communities, companies and governments to come up with innovative solutions to secure water that can help maintain the balance between people and nature.”

Mr. Mohsin Leghari, former Senator and Minister Irrigation, Punjab, highlighted that collective action is required that caters to Pakistan’s agriculture challenges.  More than 90% of Pakistan’s water resources are used in agriculture (FAO). Of this, 50% is wasted due to mismanagement. “In light of climate change, increasing food security issues, and considering we are an agrarian economy, it is imperative to improve agricultural productivity through efficient water management and modern irrigation methods,” he iterated.

Speaking on the occasion, Abdullah Jawaid, Business Executive Officer for Nestlé Waters underscored Nestlé’s flagship Caring for Water-Pakistan (C4W-Pakistan) initiative as a lighthouse example for collective action. He said, “C4W-Pakistan brings in different partners together to discuss and find solutions for water challenges factories, communities, and agriculture. Particular to agriculture, Nestlé has assisted farmers to shift to drip irrigation on 139 acres and installing Smart Soil Moisture Sensors on 548 acres in Punjab. Drip irrigation is being scaled up in Sindh.”

Nestlé’s Waters Pledge in 2021, where Nestlé’s Waters Business has committed to lead the regeneration of the water cycle to create positive impact by 2025, accelerated the water stewardship efforts of C4W-Pakistan. By the end of 2022, the company had achieved 58% of its target for 2025, well on track for its commitment. These activities are in line with United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 6, 13 and 17.

The discussion was moderated by Dr. Zehra Waheed. Associate Dean for Academics (SDSB – Undergraduate). Other notable speakers, including Head of Corporate Affairs Sheikh Waqar Ahmad, Member Committee on Water Issues in Islamabad Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, environmental journalist Zofeen Ebrahim, water expert Imran Saqib Khalid, owner Sukeki Farms Sultan Ahmed Bhatti, all stressed on the need for sustainable irrigation methods as the need of the hour.

This distressing event unfolded after two of the cable car’s cables snapped around 8:30 a.m. in Allai, within the Battagram district of Khyber-Pakhthunkwa Province. The cable car, a common means of transportation for residents in the mountainous northern region, was en route to a nearby school with children aged 10 to 12 on board.

As panic took hold among the passengers and their families, urgent pleas for help were issued. In response, authorities dispatched an army helicopter to the scene. Local television footage revealed the helicopter hovering some distance from the cable car while a commando descended on a rope, providing sustenance including food and water.

However, attempts to bring the helicopter closer to the cable car were met with difficulty as the car started to shake significantly, complicating the air rescue process.

Prior to the delivery of supplies, one passenger informed a local TV news network that they had been stranded for over six hours without access to food or water. Additionally, one child with a heart condition reportedly fainted due to the distressing situation. “My mobile phone battery is depleting rapidly,” the passenger shared.

The precise cause of the cable’s rupture, which seemingly left only one cable intact, remains unclear. Anwaar-ul Haq Kakar, the country’s interim prime minister, expressed his concern over the cable car accident, prompting him to order the initiation of a rescue operation.

Mr. Kakar also directed authorities to conduct safety inspections on all privately operated mountain cable cars, emphasizing the need to ensure their reliability and security, according to an official statement from his office.

As per the insights gleaned from the Bureau of Emigration & Overseas Employment, the data highlights that a remarkable count of 450,110 Pakistani individuals registered themselves for potential overseas employment during the first seven months of the current calendar year, concluding in July.

A detailed breakdown of the statistics brings to light that within this timeframe, 192,188 of these departing individuals were categorized as laborers, while an additional 96,466 identified as drivers. Furthermore, this cohort of ambitious emigrants encompassed 4,705 engineers, 4,431 accountants, 1,925 doctors, and 764 teachers.

Divulging into the occupational demographics, the bureau’s report illustrates that out of this outpouring, 12,787 individuals were equipped with high qualifications, while an impressive 26,405 exhibited commendable high-skilled expertise.

When it comes to destinations, the report underscores that a substantial 205,515 workers migrated to Saudi Arabia, followed by 121,745 to the United Arab Emirates, 35,637 to Qatar, and 34,140 who ventured to Oman for fresh opportunities. Notable presence can also be seen in other nations like Malaysia (16,166), Bahrain (7,441), Greece (2,565), Romania (3,275), and Iraq (2,119).

It’s worth noting that the data compiled by the Bureau of Emigration & Overseas Employment pertains exclusively to individuals who have formally registered with the Bureau. Hence, those who embark on journeys for educational pursuits or those who opt for alternative paths such as direct immigration remain unaccounted for in this record.

To provide context, the previous year witnessed a staggering count of 832,339 Pakistani nationals venturing abroad for employment prospects, marking the highest figure since the year 2016.
