Security Paper’s Profit surges 122% to Rs 746 Million during H1 FY23-24

Security Paper Limited (PSX: SEPL) released its financial statement for the first six months of the fiscal year ending December 31, 2023, announcing a profit of Rs 746 million (EPS Rs 12.59) showing a significant increase of 122% compared to the profit of Rs 336 million (EPS Rs 5.67) reported in the Same Period Last year (SPLY).

Going by the results, the Security Papers Limited’s (SPL) top line increased by 38% to Rs 3.49 billion as compared to Rs 2.53 billion in SPLY. The Company’s cost of sales rose by 26% to Rs 2.51 billion vs SPLY. However, due to a higher increase in sales, the gross profit improved substantially by 82% to Rs 976 million.

Expressing his delight on the results, SPL Chairman Mohammad Aftab Manzoor expressed that Security Papers strategic focus on increasing sales via diversifying its customer base, focus on operational costs and positive outcome of a number of reforms introduced in the Company has yielded superb financial performance. “Our strategic vision and relentless focus on new initiatives and diversification has more than doubled the EPS of the Company. The SPL’s strong performance is a testament to its commitment to progress aimed at delivering value to shareholders and customers.”

Expressing confidence in the future performance, the SPL chairman expressed that the recently concluded technical consultancy agreement with a leading European Security Paper Company that aims to benchmark SPL’s operational efficiencies will help in preparing comprehensive efficiency and cost improvement plans.

The Company also announced an interim dividend of Rs 2.5 per share (25%).

Wasim Akram Questions Shadab Khan’s Approach As Captain

Former Pakistan cricket captain Wasim Akram expressed disappointment and raised concerns over Islamabad United’s captain Shadab Khan for his on-field decisions during yesterday’s match against Multan Sultans in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9.

Shadab Khan, who led Islamabad to victory in the previous match with a quick fifty at number three, opted to bat at number seven against Multan Sultans, scoring only 11 runs off nine balls.

In a discussion on a local sports channel, Wasim Akram questioned Shadab’s decision, particularly given his stellar form in the previous match.

“When you have a captain who scored 74 runs in 41 balls in the previous match, why didn’t he come in to bat at three or four?” Akram queried.

He also expressed hope that Shadab’s reasoning about the pitch difficulty was a miscommunication, suggesting it would be concerning if Shadab only chose to bat early on easier pitches.

“He [Shadab] said in the post-match press conference that the wicket was a bit difficult which is why I wanted to send in a proper batter,” Akram added.

“I hope that was a language barrier because if that’s case it means that he will come out to bat early when the pitch is easy but send anyone else if that’s not the case.”

Multan Sultans secured their second consecutive win in PSL 9 by defeating Islamabad United by five wickets at Multan Cricket Stadium.

Google is all geared up to release the next major version of its operating system in the coming months, Android 15. Code-named Vanilla Ice Cream, the much-anticipated update is making waves across the internet, and to get everything ready for their major release, Google has unveiled their initial developer preview, which showcases their new features that will ultimately improve the device’s performance and enhance the user’s privacy & security.

According to Dave Burke, who serves as the VP of Engineering at Google for Android, this first developer preview of Android will allow them to build a better Android experience, providing the end-user with new capabilities, minimizing battery impact, maximizing smooth app performance, and protecting user privacy and security.

Release Date For Android 15

Although the release date of Android 15 has not been formally confirmed by Google, but based on previous trends we can estimate the full release of the OS by August 2024, with the initial OS being off-loaded on its Pixel devices and soon to other tech giants such as Samsung. According to their official developer page, the complete timeline is broken down into four different sections, which include:

  • Stage 1: Developer Previews (Feb 2024 – Mar 2024)
  • Stage 2: Beta Releases (Apr 2024 – Jul 2024)
  • Stage 3: Platform Stability (Jun 2024 – Jul 2024)
  • Stage 4: Final Release (Jul 2024 – Aug 2024)

Stage 1 will see two developer previews rolled out each month, which will build the early baseline, focusing on developer feedback as well as incremental updates with additional features. Stage 2 will follow them diving into beta-quality releases with continued compatibility testings. Around June 2024, at Stage 3, they expect to achieve their first platform stability milestone, which will include final APIs and behaviors. Finally, in late July 2024 or August 2024, we can expect the final release of the much-awaited Android 15.

All New Features!

Google has not unveiled all of the features of the upcoming OS, but some leaks and rumors provide us with an insight into what’s to be expected. These features include and are not limited to:

  1. Privacy Sandbox: This innovative technology aims to enhance user privacy and provide customized advertising experiences for mobile apps. Enabling total privacy of the user data without compromising on their identity.
  2. File Integrity: This will prevent files from being tampered with or corrupted preventing any potential malware or unauthorized modifications.

Compatibility Of The OS

The new OS will be compatible with a range of devices, but not all of them will receive the update at the same time. In the past couple of decades, the rapid evolution of technology has blessed us with numerous products that make our daily lives easy. One such product is our beloved smartphone, who we keep near and dear to our hearts (quite literally for me, since I keep it in my breast pocket).

Many of us can’t imagine life without smartphones. If you feel like everyone around you is always on their phone, you’re not wrong. In fact around 85.68% of the world’s population has access to a smartphone. And for something that we love and cherish (sometimes take for granted), we can’t help ourselves from thinking what would happen if something were to happen to it.

Whether its from a sweaty forehead or a casual spill of your favorite fizzy drink, liquids can seriously cause damage to your beloved. Now that the damage is done, you panic and coincidentally find yourself in front of a bag filled with rice and you immediately dump it inside in order to save it. But wait, Should you be doing that? And why is there a random bag of rice in front of you? Well, let’s find out!

The Myth, The Legend, The Rice

Well the concept what most believe behind drying your phone using rice is that it will absorb the moisture from your gadget, heck even shield it from short circuits and damage. But on the contrary, its not as effective as one is lead to believe. Apple, one of the biggest smartphone manufacturers actually advises against using this method all-together! In their official support page, they stated:

Don’t put your iPhone in a bag of rice. Doing so could allow small particles of rice to damage your iPhone.

Rice might not be able to absorb the water that has crept into your device’s internal parts, which might potentially lead to issues down the road. While it can seem like a quick and low-cost fix, using rice to dry your phone might end up doing more harm than good. These risks include, but are not limited to:

  1. Scratches on your beloved smartphone’s body and on the screen.
  2. The risk of tiny rice particles becoming lodged inside of your mobile port, ultimately damaging the capacity to charge or worse.
  3. Rice can actually delay the drying process, giving more time for the liquid to leave its permanent mark on your device.

The Better Solution!

So what should you do in order to save your phone you ask? Here are a couple of ways to save your dearest in this dire situation:

  1. Turn off your device immediately and separate any accessories attached to it.
  2. Tap the device slowly and gently on a piece of cloth or your palms to ensure all the water has been drained out from the ports.
  3. Clean up the access water that might still be lingering on your device.
  4. Place your device in an open, ventilated, and dry area and give it its sweet time to completely dry out (Preferably at least 24 to 48 hours).
  5. Ensure you did your best, and then pray for its complete recovery.

It might not be a big deal if your phone is water-resistant, but as the term implies, it’s water-resistant and not water-proof. So it’s best to follow all these steps for the best results!

And as far as the random bag of rice in front of you is concerned, I really have no idea how it got there in the first place.

Hafeez Reveals Reason Behind Dropping Azam Khan After Three Matches In New Zealand

Former Pakistan cricket director Mohammad Hafeez has shed light on the decision to drop wicket-keeper Azam Khan after the first three matches of the T20I series against New Zealand.

Azam Khan, known for his explosive batting, returned to the national team during the recent five-match T20I series against New Zealand, which Pakistan unfortunately lost 4-1.

Despite his potential, Azam struggled to leave a mark in the first three T20Is, managing modest scores of 10, 2, and 10 respectively. His exclusion from the last two matches sparked criticism, with many calling for a fairer opportunity for the young batter.

Speaking to a local sports channel, Mohammad Hafeez elaborated on the rationale behind Azam’s exclusion after three games.

“Unfortunately, Azam Khan has yet to replicate his franchise performances at the international level. He averages around 5 after playing seven games,” remarked Hafeez.

“We understand that the transition to international cricket can be challenging for some players, which is why we initially planned to give him an extended run till the T20 World Cup. However, after three consecutive failures, we decided to withdraw him from the next two matches to prevent further damage to his confidence,” he explained.

Hafeez emphasized the intense pressure players face, particularly with the scrutiny of social media, and expressed a desire to shield Azam from excessive criticism.

“Knowing the immense pressure players endure, especially from social media, we wanted to protect Azam from potential backlash. Our decision was made in his best interest, allowing him the opportunity to regroup and return stronger,” Hafeez added.

Meanwhile, Azam Khan had previously voiced concerns about inconsistent selection policies, emphasizing the need for clarity from selectors regarding his role in the team.

Hafeez’s comments indicate that Azam was in the long-term plans, however, with the ouster of Hafeez, time will tell if the new management will show same confidence in the explosive batter.

Former captains Mohammad Hafeez and Azhar Ali have raised concerns regarding the effectiveness of Lahore Qalandars’ Player Development Program (PDP) in nurturing international-level talent.

In a recent discussion on a local sports channel, Hafeez acknowledged the active engagement of Lahore Qalandars in their PDP but expressed doubts about its ability to produce standout performers beyond Haris Rauf.

“While Lahore Qalandars have been proactive in their Player Development Program, we have yet to see significant results apart from Haris Rauf. The program seems to generate hype but lacks tangible results at the international level,” remarked Hafeez.

Azhar Ali echoed similar sentiments, pointing out the inclusion of established players like Fakhar Zaman in Lahore Qalandars’ squad, which suggests a reliance on pre-existing talent rather than solely on the PDP for player development.

“They have also added Fakhar Zaman and many other players who were already in the system,” Azhar observed.
