Samina Baig, a renowned Pakistani mountaineer, is in critical condition and urgently needs prayers from around the world. She was, born in 1990. She made history by becoming the first Pakistani woman to climb Mount Everest in 2013 at the age of 21.

The 32-year-old trailblazer, who made history by becoming the first Pakistani woman to conquer Mount Everest, K2, and the Seven Summits, fell severely ill during her recent K2 expedition.

Baig, who was leading the joint Pakistani-Italian female expedition, developed severe breathing issues during the pre-expedition preparations. Despite having all the necessary equipment and team members present, the rescue operations were hindered by unfavourable weather conditions. She waited for three days for a helicopter to arrive, her health rapidly deteriorating.

The young mountaineer was eventually evacuated with human assistance and a horse and later airlifted from Dassu to Skardu via helicopter. She is now admitted to the Combined Military Hospital in Skardu, where her condition remains critical.

Japanese researchers have shattered the internet speed record, achieving a download rate of 402 Terabits per second (Tbps). This milestone surpasses their previous record of 321 Tbps set last year. At 402,000,000 Megabits per second (Mbps), this speed makes typical home internet connections seem like a rounding error. For context, it could download all 18+ GB of Elden Ring, or even an entire Steam library, in less than a millisecond.

The Technology Behind the Speed

The team used widely available fiber optic cables to reach this new record. They developed new technologies, including “the world’s first O to U-band transmission system capable of DWDM transmission in a commercially available standard optical fiber achieved with custom-designed amplifier technology.” This innovation allows data signals to be better amplified, fully utilizing the capabilities of fiber optic cabling.

Who Achieved This Feat?

An international team led by researchers from the Photonic Network Laboratory at the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Tokyo, Japan, conducted this work. They managed to combine six doped-fiber amplifier variants with lumped and distributed Raman amplification. This combination covered all the low-loss transmission bands of silica fibers, achieving a record-breaking 37.6 Terahertz (THz) of bandwidth across 50 km of fiber optic cabling.

While this achievement is groundbreaking, it’s unlikely we’ll see such speeds at home anytime soon. Current hardware can’t handle that much data that fast. Even the best gaming PCs can’t write data at such speeds. Despite this, the research is crucial. It shows the potential of current technology and paves the way for future advancements.

A hallmark of humanity and a charitable crusader Pakistan’s prominent philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi runs the nation’s most revered social organization and charity center, “The Edhi Foundation.” No one can doubt the tenacity of Edhi’s spirit to help fellow beings.

Down-to-earth, humble, and dedicated to the cause, the contributions of the social entrepreneur for the country and beyond are uncountable. With his iconic long beard, plain kurta pajama, and the signature Jinnah cap, he is titled as the Santa Clause of the East and a universal representative of human rights.

The journey of building the largest ambulance service started 60 years back in Karachi when Edhi Sahab begged for humanity, turned a Hilma pick-up truck into an ambulance, and saved countless lives in it.

Over the years, he has built a sanctuary for the abused, unwanted, homeless, and needy. Even hungry animals are not turned away at Edhi Foundation.

The philanthropist, along with his wife, wandered city’s street to collect abandoned infants and have provided shelter to more than 35,000 discarded babies to date.

Even the robbers who looted an office at Edhi Foundation in 2014 returned him the money, being guilt-stricken for stealing Pakistan’s most nobleman.

The living saint has extended the warmth of Pakistani hospitality globally via Edhi Foundation, spreading its roots as far as the USA, England, Japan, UAE, Canada, and Australia.

For him,” No Religion is Higher than Humanity.” When asked by religious radicals that why he even picks up Christians and Hindus in his ambulance, Edhi Sahab replied, “My ambulance is more Musalmaan than yours.”

There hasn’t been a single global crisis to which Edhi has not extended his support. Be it the 1985 famine in Ethiopia or the Gulf War 1991; his relief team has reached every corner of the earth.

Fearless as a lion, he went to Beirut, Lebanon, in 2006 and set up a camp to help the refugees of the appalling war. “I knew I would have to be in Lebanon,” Edhi told Arab News in 2006. “I just can’t sit back and watch humanity suffer. I am not made that way. I have been engaged in this kind of social work for the last six decades. I am 82 now. Allah has always helped me.”

When New Orleans, USA, was hit by the hurricane Katrina in 2005, Edhi rose to their aid and denoted $100,000 for the victims of the natural tragedy.

Even, the Bengalis found a friend in Edhi when he raised $200,000 for the affectees of the Bangladesh cyclone, 2007.

Sitting in his wheelchair, he led a peace rally from Karachi’s Bolton Market to Mazar-e-Quaid in protest of Israel’s airstrikes on Gaza Strip.

Ever- ready to serve humanity, his concerns were low about his deteriorating health and more for Karachi’s heatwave victims as he raised funds for them under the scorching sun.

13. When selected for the Nobel Peace Laureate, the modest humanitarian claimed he was not worthy of so much honor as he is nothing but a mere “Faqeer.”

Despite leading the world’s largest fleet of ambulances, Edhi humbly lives in a two-bedroom apartment, owns two pairs of clothes, and loves the simple combo of roti and achaar.

Time and time again, Edhi teaches us that the world can be a happy place if we come together to make it one. While he rose above all differences and embraced all of humanity in his haven, we sincerely can never thank the honorable saint enough for his efforts.

If you need that long to understand the combination, it means there is no consistency in your selection.”

Ahmed highlighted the uncertainty surrounding team selections. “We also don’t know which players will be included or excluded in the next tournament. This inconsistency affects the team’s combination and the players’ performance,” he stated.

Mushtaq also addressed the issue of developing bench strength, lamenting the PCB’s failure to nurture young talent during successful periods. He pointed out that promising players like Azam Khan and Saim Ayub deserve consistent backing from the board.

“Our bench strength isn’t improving. Do you know why? We’ve never experimented, never lifted people from the bench during successful periods. That is the best time to bring in young players,” Mushtaq explained.

“Saim Ayub has shown talent, hasn’t he? Azam Khan came in the middle overs and hit sixes in the PSL. To get the best out of players like Azam or Saim, it’s also the role of coaches and management to back them.”

Both Saim Ayub and Azam Khan have faced challenges in the T20I format recently. Saim has played 23 matches, scoring 309 runs with a highest score of 49, averaging 14.71 at a strike rate of 122.13.

Meanwhile, Azam Khan, in his 14 T20I appearances, has accumulated 88 runs with an unbeaten highest score of 30, averaging 8.80 at a strike rate of 133.33.

Government Revises Duties On Imported Used Cars

In the recent fiscal budget for 2024-25, the government made several tax amendments affecting Pakistan’s vulnerable auto industry. With the Finance Bill 2024-25 approved, the new duties and taxes are now in effect.

New Regulatory Duty on Imported Vehicles

The government has implemented a 15% regulatory duty (RD) on imported used vehicles with engine capacities ranging from 1300cc to 1800cc. For cars above 1800cc, the RD is 70-90%. There is no regulatory duty on cars under 1300cc. This means popular models like Toyota Aqua, Honda Vezel, and CHR will see a price increase.

Engine Capacity and RD Breakdown:

0-1300cc: No RD for hybrid and petrol cars.
1300-1800cc: 16% RD for both hybrid and petrol cars.
Above 1800cc: 15% RD for hybrid cars, 70-90% RD for petrol cars.

Smaller-engine cars (below 1300cc), such as Daihatsu Mira, Nissan Dayz, and Toyota Vitz, are exempt from this RD and will continue with their current fixed taxes. This exemption might benefit these smaller cars but could hurt local manufacturers like Pak Suzuki, which produces vehicles like the Alto (660cc), WagonR (1000cc), Cultus (1000cc), and Swift (1200cc).

Impact on Imported HEVs

The biggest impact will likely be felt on used Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) exceeding 1300cc. These include models like Honda Vezel, Toyota Yaris Cross, Honda CHR HEV, and Toyota Corolla Cross. Their prices are expected to jump by a significant Rs. 2.5 million to Rs. 3 million, pushing their current market value from Rs. 7.5 million to Rs. 9.5 million.

The government has also revised the withholding tax, which will now be charged on the ex-factory price rather than engine capacity. This move has forced local automakers to increase their car prices. Recently, MG Pakistan and Regal Automobiles raised their prices, citing the new tax effect. In the coming days, the market will likely see further price hikes.

No Custom Duty Exemptions

There are no custom duty exemptions on old and new imported (CBU) hybrid cars under SRO 499. This move aims to protect locally assembled HEVs.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced plans to revamp the National Bank Stadium, Karachi in preparation for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Set to take place from February 19 to March 9 next year, the tournament will feature Pakistan as both the host and defending champion.

Stadium Upgrades Unveiled

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who was elected unopposed, revealed earlier this year that stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi would undergo significant upgrades. The work has already started, and the National Bank Stadium is set to see some major improvements.

Naqvi expressed his dissatisfaction with the viewer experience during the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 9 final in Karachi. This has prompted the PCB to bring the stadium up to international standards.

What’s Changing?

The organization in charge of the upgrade project has begun preliminary work, including detailed maps and land measurements. These plans are set to be approved at a PCB Governing Board meeting chaired by Naqvi on Saturday, July 6.

Once approved, construction will officially kick-off. The main building will be repaired rather than demolished, with key upgrades including:

Relocating the Media Center: The media centre will be moved to the opposite side of the stadium.

Interestingly, there are no plans to demolish the existing enclosures or increase the stadium’s seating capacity, which currently holds 32,000 spectators.

Karachi: Hosting the opening match, a semi-final, and a total of three matches.
