In September 2025 Apple intends to release the thinnest iPhone it has ever built called iPhone 17 Air. This phone will have an extremely slim look with the thickness of 5mm to 6mm. It emphasises simplicity and offers a 48-megapixels rear camera, 24-megapixels front camera and single earpiece speaker. The latest model iPhone 17 Air will not have a SIM card tray and will be utilising eSIM technology.

It will still offer the V-level performance with an A19 chip, extended by 8GB RAM and a 6.6-inch Dynamic Island screen. The lightweight aluminum frame helps the structure to be strong and portable. iPhone 17 series will also have Pro versions with enhanced capabilities such as improved cameras and partly-glass backs for the wireless charging capability.

Pakistan’s Inflation Drops to 4.9% in November, Lowest in 78 Months

Pakistan’s inflation rate sinks to a low of 4.9 percent in November 2024, according to the PBS. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.5% on a monthly basis from 1.2%, registered in October. Average inflation for May’FY2025 stood at 7.88% down from 28.62% in the same period of FY2024, according to the Arif Habib Limited Research.

In November 2008, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) reduced its interest rate by two and a half per cent. This year, the central bank has lowered the rates by 700 basis points and the benchmark now stands at 15% since June. According to Bloomberg, the rate will go down to 13.5% by June 2025. The Finance Ministry estimated the inflation rate for the month ending November between 5.8% and 6.8%. According to the IMF, for 2024, the consumer prices’ point figure of 9.5 is forecasted. Reduced food prices and moderate demand also played a key role in this sharp decline in inflation rates.

Previous Deadline and Grace Period

The Ministry of Interior initially announced that unregistered VPNs would be shut down by the middle of November. However, later, a two-week “grace period” was announced, allowing people to register VPNs before the deadline.

PTA’s Decision Not to Block VPNs

The deadline ended last night, but PTA has not issued an official statement on the VPN matter. However, PTA Chairman Maj Gen Hafeez Ur Rehman spoke to certain media outlets. He confirmed that the authority would not block VPNs as the government has decided to extend the deadline. This was also due to the constant pressure from stakeholders and the IT industry. The PTA chief reassured users that VPNs would not be blocked on November 30, as initially planned. “VPNs will not be blocked today,” he said, addressing concerns about disruptions.

However, he did not specify a new deadline for registration, adding, “How long VPN registration is extended is a matter for the interior ministry.”

The extension follows a request from Wispap, which had urged the interior ministry to extend the deadline to “facilitate compliance.”

Banks to Remain Open on Weekend for Hajj Applications

To assist citizens with their Hajj applications, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) announced that designated banks will remain open on Saturday and Sunday, November 30 and December 1, 2024. According to a SBP circular, the banks will be operational from 9 am to 2:30 pm on both days to collect applications and dues from people intending to perform Hajj next year.

Hajj 2025 Application Process and Fees

The Ministry of Religious Affairs has appointed 15 banks to collect Hajj applications and payments from November 18 to December 3, 2024. A total of 179,210 Pakistani citizens will perform Hajj under the government scheme next year. The cost for each pilgrim will range between Rs 1,075,000 and Rs 1,175,000.

Minister for Religious Affairs Chaudhry Salik Hussain confirmed that only citizens over the age of 12 will be eligible to apply for Hajj. Those under 12 will not be allowed to travel.

Banks to Remain Open on Weekend for Hajj Applications

Payment Details and Refund Policy

Pilgrims will need to pay Rs 200,000 along with their Hajj application. If they are selected through the balloting process, they must deposit an additional Rs 400,000. The remaining amount is due by February 10, 2025. If a pilgrim cancels, they will receive a refund of the first instalment after a Rs 50,000 deduction. However, if the third instalment is not paid, a deduction of Rs 200,000 will be made. No refunds will be issued after February 10, 2025.

The government has also increased the compensation for the heirs of deceased pilgrims from Rs1 million to Rs2 million. Furthermore, the Hajj policy includes special provisions for certain groups. A total of 1,000 seats will be reserved for hardship cases, and 300 seats will be allocated for low-income workers registered under the Employees Old-Age Benefit Institution (EOBI) or Workers Welfare Fund.

New Initiatives

The government has introduced the “Road to Makkah” facility at Islamabad and Karachi international airports, aiming to assist with travel for pilgrims. Additionally, a new role of ‘Nazim’ (administrator) has been created for each group of 100 pilgrims. Nazims will be selected from the welfare staff to help manage the groups. Another important initiative is the special Hajj Management App that has been developed to assist pilgrims and their families. Arrangements have also been made for the training of pilgrims so that their Hajj journey is a safe and informed one.

With the opening of designated banks on the weekend for Hajj applications and the introduction of several new initiatives to improve the pilgrimage process, the government aims to make Hajj 2025 a more organized and accessible experience for Pakistani pilgrims.
