Major Internet Breakdown has Severely Affected Digital Agencies

Source: Arab News

Pakistan-based freelancers, digital marketers, and even agency owners are shaken because the recent internet interruptions have become a constant reality. Being rejected by the government while termed as “minor incidents,” internet usage has not only worsened people’s frustration but also driven them sceptical of authorities’ true intent.

Freelancers and Digital Agencies in Crisis

For months, internet users have been struggling with slow speeds and unreliable connectivity, hindering access to platforms such as WhatsApp, TikTok, and Instagram. These are the platforms that make up the backbone of Pakistan’s digital economy, enabling thousands to earn through freelancing and digital marketing. Outages reportedly linked to the government testing a new “firewall” have disrupted business operations nationwide.

Source: Facebook

Downdetector reports of major platform outages spiked this week, indicating the scale of the problem. Many believe that the firewall, which has been touted as a move to enhance cybersecurity and content control, is being used to suppress political dissent, especially when protests are taking place. The government says it is necessary to counter cyberattacks and terrorism, claiming millions of threats are made daily.

Livelihoods at Risk

For digital workers, the implications have been catastrophic. A freelance graphic designer in Karachi said, “With clients overseas, even a few hours of downtime can mean losing a project. How are we supposed to survive this?” Agencies handling social media campaigns for local businesses are also reporting delays in content delivery and plummeting client satisfaction.

It has furthered the debate of whether such outages are technically oriented or politically motivated. The critics believe that it is the case of preferring information control by the government, instead of rectifying the actual technical problems within the outdated internet structure in Pakistan. This, over time, has developed widespread dissatisfaction among the young generations due to limited internet services. Innovation and competitiveness in the world’s digital economy are dampened.

Future for Digital Workers

Although the government has promised to upgrade its web management systems and expand 4G and 5G services by 2025, the immediate future is bleak for the digital workforce. Until stable connectivity is restored, Pakistan risks alienating its freelancers and entrepreneurs who have long relied on the Internet to stay afloat in a challenging economic landscape.

With no clear resolution in sight, the nation’s digital economy faces an uncertain road ahead, where every disruption chips away at the hopes of those striving for financial independence online.

VPN Registration Deadline Extended, Confirms PTA

Chairman Major General Hafeez Ur Rehman of Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) confirmed on Saturday that the government has approved an extension for the deadline to register VPNs.

Previous Deadline and Grace Period

The Ministry of Interior initially announced that unregistered VPNs would be shut down by the middle of November. However, later, a two-week “grace period” was announced, allowing people to register VPNs before the deadline.

PTA’s Decision Not to Block VPNs

The deadline ended last night, but PTA has not issued an official statement on the VPN matter. However, PTA Chairman Maj Gen Hafeez Ur Rehman spoke to certain media outlets. He confirmed that the authority would not block VPNs as the government has decided to extend the deadline. This was also due to the constant pressure from stakeholders and the IT industry. The PTA chief reassured users that VPNs would not be blocked on November 30, as initially planned. “VPNs will not be blocked today,” he said, addressing concerns about disruptions.

However, he did not specify a new deadline for registration, adding, “How long VPN registration is extended is a matter for the interior ministry.”

The extension follows a request from Wispap, which had urged the interior ministry to extend the deadline to “facilitate compliance.”

Surge in VPN Use After Social Media Ban

The use of VPNs witnessed a spike in Pakistan after authorities banned social media site X, formerly known as Twitter, over “national security” concerns.

The government’s decision to extend the VPN registration deadline gives users more time to comply with the new regulations while maintaining internet access amid rising VPN usage.

Paid to Defame: The Truth Behind Social Media Attack On Salman Ali Agha

truth-behind-social-media-attack-on-salman-ali-agha-salman-ali-agha-to-lead-pakistan-t20i-squad-against-new-zealand-babar-azam

Salman Ali Agha, a name that has steadily risen in Pakistan’s cricketing circles, has recently found himself in the crosshairs of an orchestrated smear campaign. Appointed as the vice-captain of Pakistan’s white-ball team on October 27, 2024, following Mohammad Rizwan’s elevation to captaincy, Salman’s leadership credentials are now being under scrutiny.

Why PCB Trusted Him?

Salman’s appointment as vice-captain was largely rooted in his exceptional performances in Test cricket, where he showcased a sharp cricketing intellect, unwavering fighting spirit, and natural leadership qualities.

Despite never having played an international T20 match before his appointment as vice-captain, Salman stepped into the role with determination, making his debut during Pakistan’s tour of Australia last month. While this decision by the PCB may raise eyebrows, it highlights the trust placed in his leadership potential and overall cricketing acumen.

His domestic T20 record — 80 matches, 1105 runs at an average of 18.72 and a strike rate of 116.68 — might not immediately justify a leadership role in the format. However, his value as an all-rounder is undeniable, with 38 wickets at an impressive bowling average of 22.71.

truth-behind-social-media-attack-on-salman-ali-agha

In addition, Salman demonstrated glimpses of T20 brilliance in the most recent Pakistan Super League (PSL) season. Representing Islamabad United, the eventual champions, he scored 310 runs in 12 games at an average of 31 and an excellent strike rate of 140.27. This performance underscored his ability to adapt and thrive in the shortest format of the game.

Criticism of the PCB’s decision to base a T20I vice-captaincy on Test cricket credentials is a fair discussion. However, the backlash directed at Salman Ali Agha is misdirected. He didn’t campaign for the role; it was a responsibility entrusted to him. He simply accepted the opportunity with the determination to prove his mettle.

The Smear Campaign

After leading Pakistan to victory in the first match of the T20I series against Zimbabwe—his first series as a full-time captain with captain Rizwan resting in this series, Salman should have been commended for his performance. Instead, a wave of negative comments emerged online, questioning his abilities and his position in the T20 team.

A deeper look reveals an alarming pattern. Many of these comments come from newly created social media profiles with little to no activity, suggesting a coordinated campaign. Comments such as “Salman doesn’t deserve to be in the T20 team” or “Why was he even appointed vice-captain?” lack substance and context, clearly aimed at tarnishing his image.

truth-behind-social-media-attack-on-salman-ali-agha

Paid PR or Genuine Criticism?

This is not the first time a leadership candidate in Pakistan cricket has faced a sudden online attack. Shan Masood experienced a similar wave of criticism after being named red-ball captain. The timing and nature of these campaigns point to something more than just passionate fan reactions—it feels like a deliberate effort to undermine these players.

Whether it’s a paid PR campaign or agenda-driven criticism, these attacks divert attention from actual performance and progress on the field. Salman’s rise and the opportunities given to him are the result of his hard work and the trust placed in him by the PCB.

Read More: Why Pakistan’s Youngsters Struggle Internationally Compared to India?

If there is a critique to be made, it should be directed at the PCB’s decision-making process. Appointing a T20I vice-captain based on Test cricket success is unconventional and invites debate.

However, this debate should focus on the decision-makers, not the players who are doing their best to fulfil their roles. As cricket fans, we should evaluate players on their performance and potential rather than succumbing to narratives set by questionable online campaigns.

Champions Trophy 2025: PCB Clarifies Stance, Rejects ‘Surrender’ Charges

champions-trophy-2025-pcb-rejects-surrender-charges-Pakistan Cricket Board as PCB and new chief-pcb-issues-advertisement-for-mens-team-coaching-staff

The drama around the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy hosting rights continues to unfold, but the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is making one thing crystal clear: they haven’t backed down.

After weeks of speculation, rumors surfaced claiming that the PCB had “surrendered” in the ongoing tug-of-war with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). However, PCB officials are putting those claims to rest.

What’s the Fuss All About?

The Champions Trophy, scheduled for February-March 2025, was awarded to Pakistan as the host. But the BCCI’s refusal to send the Indian team to Pakistan, citing government restrictions, has thrown a wrench into the plans.

To navigate this standoff, a “partnership formula” is now on the table. According to this proposal, both Pakistan and India would play their matches at neutral venues—likely in Dubai—whenever ICC events are hosted in each other’s countries over the next three years.

Read More: Champions Trophy: Will PCB’s ‘Partnership Formula’ Solve Pakistan-India Deadlock?

Despite whispers of a compromise, sources close to the PCB have dismissed any notion of surrender. If anything, the fact that the BCCI and ICC are still deliberating over the proposal shows that the PCB’s stance has weight.

In their defense, PCB officials pointed out that if they had caved, there wouldn’t be a need for delays or further discussions. Clearly, the ICC and BCCI are taking their time to consider the consequences of rejecting Pakistan’s terms.

What’s at Stake?

Here’s where it gets even more interesting. If the partnership model is approved, it won’t just affect the Champions Trophy. It would also set a precedent for future ICC tournaments.

India is scheduled to host three major events in the next few years, including:

  • Women’s World Cup 2025
  • T20 World Cup 2026 (co-hosted with Sri Lanka)
  • Champions Trophy 2027

Under this model, Pakistan wouldn’t travel to India for any of these tournaments, with Dubai serving as the neutral venue for their matches.

The ICC seems to favor this formula as a way to avoid legal battles with Pakistan. If both boards agree, the matter could be settled without the need for a formal vote among ICC members.

For now, the PCB is holding its ground, and rightly so. This isn’t just about hosting rights; it’s about asserting Pakistan’s place on the international cricket stage.

The ball is now in the ICC and BCCI’s court. While no final decision has been made, the PCB’s firm stance has undoubtedly added pressure. If the partnership model is accepted, it could mark a new chapter in how ICC events are handled between these two cricketing giants.

Champions Trophy: Will PCB’s ‘Partnership Formula’ Solve Pakistan-India Deadlock?

why-icc-champions-trophy-2025-schedule-is-still-under-wraps-icc-champions-trophy-2025-tickets-to-go-on-sale-prize-money-tomorrow

The Champions Trophy 2025 is already making waves—and not for the cricket itself. Instead, all eyes are on the diplomatic tug-of-war between the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

With the tournament set to be hosted in Pakistan, the BCCI has refused to send its team across the border, citing government restrictions. But the PCB isn’t backing down without a fight.

Enter the “Partnership or Fusion Formula,” a bold proposal from the PCB that could change how ICC tournaments are played.

Read More: Why Are England Players Banned From PSL Participation But Not IPL?

What is the Partnership or Fusion Formula?

The formula suggests that if Pakistan and India are scheduled to play ICC tournaments in each other’s countries, their matches should be shifted to neutral venues like the UAE.

For example, the Champions Trophy 2025 will remain in Pakistan, but India’s matches, and potentially some key knockout games, would be played in the UAE. The same rule would apply if an ICC event were held in India—Pakistan’s matches would be shifted to Dubai.

This approach aims to maintain the hosting country’s rights while accommodating the political realities between the two cricketing giants.

pakistan-stance-after-india-champions-trophy-refusal

A New Era of Cricket Diplomacy?

If accepted, this formula wouldn’t just apply to the Champions Trophy. It could be the blueprint for ICC events over the next three years, ensuring Pakistan and India continue to participate without compromising their governments’ stances.

The PCB has made it clear: this isn’t about money. A PCB source stated, “We aren’t asking for extra revenue. It’s about respect and fairness.” The board is standing firm on its principle, refusing offers for a bigger share of the tournament’s earnings.

While the BCCI initially showed interest, progress has hit a snag. With holidays and office closures in the UAE, and Jay Shah recently stepping in as ICC Chairman, the issue remains unresolved. However, behind-the-scenes talks are reportedly ongoing, with PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi and other top officials in Dubai to iron things out.

champions-trophy-icc-to-take-decision-november-29

What Happens if the Fusion Formula Fails?

The PCB has made its stance clear. If India doesn’t accept the proposal, Pakistan might refuse to send its team to India for future ICC events. This could create a ripple effect, impacting tournaments, broadcasters, and fans.

Given the financial and emotional stakes of an India-Pakistan clash, it’s hard to imagine the ICC letting this issue escalate further.

The “Fusion Formula” offers a way forward, balancing national pride with practical realities. But it’s not without its challenges. Can such a solution sustain the long-term rivalry? Will fans accept matches moved to neutral venues?

For now, the Champions Trophy 2025 remains a key test case. If the PCB and BCCI can agree, this could pave the way for smoother cricketing ties—or at least ensure the game doesn’t become a casualty of politics.

Mother Jailed for Seven Years after Child Found Hidden in Drawer

mother jailed for seven years

A British woman has been sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for keeping her infant daughter hidden in a drawer. The child was kept in a cabinet under her bed for nearly three years. The case was described as “unfathomable” by the judge. It was further revealed that years of severe neglect and abuse left the child physically and emotionally scarred.

A Shocking Discovery

The toddler was discovered just weeks before her third birthday at the family’s Cheshire home. Malnourished, dehydrated, and with untreated medical conditions, the girl had lived a life of isolation. The mother hid the child from her current partner and other children. She had developmental delays, a cleft palate left untreated, and was fed only milky cereal through a syringe.

The horrific situation came to light when the mother’s partner accidentally discovered the child after hearing noises from a bedroom. After the initial suspicions by the partner, he found the girl in a drawer with matted hair and rashes. Social services was immediately alerted.

At Chester Crown Court, Judge Steven Everett condemned the mother’s actions, stating the child had endured a “living death.” He accused the woman of robbing her daughter of basic human dignity, love, and care, calling her treatment “catastrophic” physically, psychologically, and socially.

The Child’s Recovery

Now in foster care, the little girl is reportedly making progress, described as an “intelligent child slowly coming to life.” However, the prosecutor revealed that when first taken into care, the child did not even recognise her name.

During police interviews, the mother claimed she hadn’t realised she was pregnant and was “scared” after giving birth. She admitted that the child was “not part of the family.” The toddler had kept hidden out of fear and confusion. Her defence attorney cited mental health struggles, an abusive relationship with the child’s father, and the challenges of the COVID-19 lockdown as contributing factors.

Community Reaction

The case has sparked widespread outrage and grief, with many questioning how such severe neglect could go unnoticed for so long. Advocacy groups are calling for stronger social safety nets to prevent similar tragedies.

As the child begins her recovery, this case serves as a chilling reminder of the importance of vigilance in safeguarding vulnerable children and the devastating consequences of neglect.

Australia Passes Landmark Social Media Ban for Under 16s

Source: NoB

Australia has enacted one of the world’s strictest social media regulations, banning children under 16 from accessing platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. Passed by Parliament on November 28, 2024, this landmark legislation aims to address concerns about the negative impact of social media on young people.

A Valiant Move Against Online Risks

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, who championed the law, called social media “a platform for peer pressure, a driver of anxiety, a vehicle for scammers, and, worst of all, a tool for online predators.” He urged parents to support the initiative, emphasising the need to shift focus from screens to physical activities like sports.

Failure to comply could result in hefty fines of up to AUS$ 50 million (US$32.5 million) for social media companies. The legislation, supported by 77% of Australians according to recent polls, reflects growing public concern over online safety.

Support from Advocates

Ali Halkic, an anti-bullying advocate whose son tragically took his life after social media harassment, praised the law. “This gives parents some control and is a vital starting point,” he said, acknowledging the difficulties of enforcing the ban for the current generation but seeing hope for younger children.

Criticism and Concerns

Despite widespread support, the legislation has faced criticism. Advocacy groups warn that it may prevent vulnerable teens, such as LGBTQ+ youth and immigrants, from accessing crucial online support networks. Australia’s Human Rights Commission also highlighted potential violations of young people’s rights, arguing that the ban could hinder their ability to participate in modern society.

Source: NoB

Privacy advocates are equally concerned, fearing the law could lead to increased data collection as platforms attempt to verify users’ ages. Greens Senator Sarah Hanson-Young criticised the move, calling it “boomers trying to tell young people how the internet should work to make themselves feel better.”

Implementation Challenges

Enforcement remains a significant hurdle. Regulators will spend the next year determining how to implement the ban, and exemptions are likely for platforms like WhatsApp and YouTube, which are deemed essential for work or recreational purposes.

While this law marks a bold step in online safety, its impact and practicality will be tested in the coming years. For now, it sparks a crucial debate on balancing protection, privacy, and the digital rights of young people.

Amazon Workers Plan Strike from Black Friday to Cyber Monday

Source: Tribune

Amazon workers and activists are intensifying their fight for better labour conditions. The strikes are planned from Black Friday through Cyber Monday. Spearheaded by the “Make Amazon Pay” coalition, this global movement, now in its fifth year, demands justice for what they allege are Amazon’s labour abuses, environmental harm, and anti-democratic practices.

Strikes Across 20 Countries

This year’s protest spans 20 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, and Brazil, aiming to disrupt the year’s biggest shopping weekend. Organisers, led by UNI Global Union and Progressive International, see the movement as a way to challenge the corporation’s dominance. Varsha Gandikota-Nellutia, Co-General Coordinator of Progressive International, stated, “Amazon is everywhere, but so are we. By uniting across borders, we can prioritise human dignity over Jeff Bezos’ profits.”

Germany is expected to see significant participation, with thousands of workers walking out. The campaign is bolstered by allied unions and rights groups in other countries. This would emphasise collective action as the key to holding Amazon accountable.

Amazon’s Defence

The grievances are manifold. Workers in Canada, the UK, and Germany accuse Amazon of using intimidation tactics to deter unionisation. In the U.S., the company has challenged the constitutionality of the National Labor Relations Board, sparking concerns over worker protections. Meanwhile, in Europe, Amazon is accused of underreporting lobbying expenditures and refusing to engage in public hearings, leading the European Parliament to bar the company’s lobbyists.

Despite these claims, Amazon maintains its stance as a fair employer. A spokesperson highlighted the company’s creation of 1.5 million jobs worldwide, boasting “great pay, great benefits, and great opportunities.” Critics, however, argue that these claims mask deeper systemic issues.

“Amazon’s pursuit of profit comes at a cost to workers, the environment, and democracy,” said Christy Hoffman, General Secretary of UNI Global Union. She emphasised the resilience of the workers’ movement despite Amazon’s substantial efforts to quash unionisation.

As the protests gain momentum, they represent a growing challenge to Amazon’s global operations. For many, “Make Amazon Pay” is more than just a campaign—it’s a call for a fairer future where corporate power is checked. The fundamental rights of workers, regardless of the pay are respected. This holiday season, as shoppers flood Amazon’s virtual aisles, the voices of those demanding change are set to grow louder than ever.

Champions Trophy 2025: ICC, BCCI, PCB Agreement Exposed By Ex-Pakistan Captain

Former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has revealed that the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 will follow a hybrid model after a compromise between the International Cricket Council (ICC), the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

If you’re wondering what a hybrid model means, here’s the lowdown: Pakistan will retain hosting rights, but India won’t play their matches on Pakistani soil. Instead, India’s games will take place in Dubai.

Read More: Rashid Latif’s Bold Call: Should ICC Ban India, Pakistan To Host Any Event?

Why the Hybrid Model?

This decision comes after the BCCI refused to send its team to Pakistan, citing the Indian government’s concerns over security. It’s a situation we’ve seen before—remember the Asia Cup 2023? That, too, followed a hybrid format, with matches split between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Latif explained, “The ICC and the boards have agreed. Pakistan won’t lose hosting rights, but India will play elsewhere. If India makes the semi-finals or final, those matches could also be moved out of Pakistan.”

What’s at Stake for Pakistan?

The Champions Trophy, set for February-March 2025, is an eight-team tournament. Hosting it is a big deal for Pakistan, especially since such events bring global attention and economic benefits.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has expressed his desire to host the entire tournament in Pakistan, but the hybrid model seems like the more realistic option.

Latif weighed in, saying, “If I were in Naqvi’s place, I’d say the same. However, the ICC will reportedly pay Pakistan $64-65 million as a hosting fee. If Pakistan agrees to the hybrid model, they could earn even more. I don’t think PCB will say no.”

What Happens if PCB Says No?

Here’s where things get tricky. If Pakistan resists the hybrid arrangement, the ICC might vote to strip the country of its hosting rights. That would be a massive blow to Pakistan cricket.

There’s also the question of whether Pakistan would boycott the event or refuse to play against India. While such scenarios seem drastic, the financial stakes are too high for broadcasters to allow disruptions in an India-Pakistan clash. Let’s face it—this rivalry is cricket’s biggest money-spinner.

Reports suggest the ICC is using financial incentives to ensure PCB’s agreement. But this raises a larger question: How much should boards compromise to meet financial and logistical demands?

For now, it seems Pakistan will host, but not entirely on its terms. As Latif noted, this hybrid approach mirrors the Asia Cup arrangement.

Shoaib, Wasim, Waqar: Salman Butt Tells Who Was The Most Complete Bowler?

Fast bowling in cricket is a thrilling art. Few things excite fans more than a perfectly delivered yorker or a bouncer that sends batters scrambling. And when it comes to Pakistan, three names reign supreme in the world of fast bowling: Shoaib Akhtar, Wasim Akram, and Waqar Younis.

Each of these legendary bowlers brought something unique to the game. But who was the most complete bowler among them? Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt, who has played alongside all three, recently shared his thoughts, and his insights are fascinating.

Why Comparing Legends Is Never Easy

During a local podcast, Salman Butt was asked to pick the most complete bowler from this iconic trio. His response? It’s not that simple.

“Look, Shoaib Bhai wasn’t just fast; he was a wonderful bowler with exceptional mental sharpness. He was always threatening and had all the skills,” Salman said.

For Wasim and Waqar, Salman highlighted their ability to swing and seam the ball, along with their devastating reverse swing. “They could shatter toes and split helmets,” he added, painting a vivid picture of their destructive prowess.

Comparing these giants, according to Salman, isn’t just difficult—it’s nearly impossible. Each had unique qualities that set them apart.

The Era of Fearsome Fast Bowling

One thing Salman was clear about was that no one who came after them compares. “Especially Wasim and Waqar, the way they sustained their performances over such a long period is remarkable,” he said.

It’s true. The duo carried Pakistan’s bowling attack for years, dominating batters in all conditions. And Shoaib Akhtar? Despite his injury troubles, he delivered spells that made even the world’s best batters nervous.

salman-butt-shoaib-akhtar-wasim-akram-waqar-younis

Salman also pointed out how these bowlers maintained their speeds and effectiveness well into their late 30s and even 40s—something that’s becoming rare today.

“Wasim Bhai played his last World Cup in 2003 and was still bowling at 137-138 km/h at the age of 40. Waqar was no different in terms of his enduring brilliance,” he shared.

And then there’s Shoaib. Despite injuries that would have sidelined most players, he bowled over 150 km/h during the 2011 World Cup in India, nearing 39 years of age. That’s a level of fitness and commitment you don’t see every day.

What Makes a Complete Bowler?

If we try to break it down, being a “complete bowler” isn’t just about pace or swing. It’s about adaptability, mental toughness, and the ability to perform in every condition.

Shoaib Akhtar’s raw pace and aggression, Wasim Akram’s unmatched skill with the ball, and Waqar Younis’ toe-crushing Yorkers—they all brought different weapons to the field. Together, they set a standard for fast bowling that remains unmatched.

Why Are England Players Banned From PSL Participation But Not IPL?

karachi-kings-bag-an-unwanted-psl-record-why-are-england-players-banned-from-psl-but-not-ipl

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has officially banned it’s players from participating in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and other franchise tournaments that overlap with their domestic summer. However, there’s a glaring exception—the Indian Premier League (IPL) is still fair game.

So, what’s the story behind this controversial move, and what does it mean for players and cricket as a whole? Let’s break it down.

Protecting Domestic Cricket—or Is It?

The ECB’s decision is all about timing. No Objection Certificates (NOCs) won’t be issued for leagues that clash with England’s domestic competitions like the Vitality Blast and The Hundred.

According to ECB Chief Executive Richard Gould, the goal is to preserve the integrity of England’s domestic cricket while still allowing players opportunities to earn overseas.

“This policy gives clarity to players and counties. It helps us strike a balance between supporting players and protecting our competitions,” Gould explained. In theory, it sounds reasonable. But the policy is already raising eyebrows, especially since IPL participation remains unaffected.

Why Is IPL the Exception?

Here’s where things get a bit murky. Since 2008, England has allowed its players to skip domestic commitments for the IPL, a league known for its sky-high contracts. The PSL and other leagues, however, aren’t getting the same leeway.

Critics argue this creates a double standard. If domestic cricket is so vital, why is the IPL still prioritized? The ECB might defend it by pointing to the IPL’s global prestige and its role in developing players for the international stage, but the fairness of this policy remains questionable.

Who’s Affected the Most?

The timing of the PSL in April 2025 would directly clash with the County Championship’s key stages, which means many England players will not be participating in the upcoming season. Players like Jason Roy and Alex Hales, who have previously opted for franchise leagues over domestic commitments, will now face tough choices.

However, there’s a silver lining for some. Players on white-ball-only contracts, such as Saqib Mahmood, may still find ways to participate in overseas leagues. This loophole could soften the blow for those not tied to red-ball cricket.

But what about the rest? For many players, this policy could mean fewer earning opportunities during the domestic season. And in a world where franchise cricket is growing at breakneck speed, that’s a big deal.

The ECB’s move highlights the challenges of balancing domestic cricket with a rapidly expanding franchise circuit. With over 20 major short-format leagues scheduled for 2025, scheduling conflicts are inevitable. Events like Major League Cricket, Canada’s Global T20, and Sri Lanka’s Premier League are all competing for players’ time and talent.

While the ECB’s decision aims to protect its own competition, it also underscores the growing tension between national boards and franchise leagues. As the game becomes more global, finding a balance between tradition and opportunity will only get harder.
