Pakistan Economic Survey 2024–25: Pakistan’s GDP Grows by 2.7%, Inflation Falls to 4.6%

economic-survey-2024-25-pakistans-gdp-grows-by-2-7-inflation-falls-to-4-6

Federal Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, while presenting the Economic Survey 2024–25 on Monday, announced that the country’s GDP grew by 2.7% and inflation dropped to 4.6% during the outgoing fiscal year.

The Economic Survey 2024–25 comes just a day before the federal budget for the next fiscal year is to be tabled in the National Assembly.

The economic survey highlights the country’s overall socio-economic performance in FY2024–25. It includes data related to GDP growth, tax revenue, public debt, employment, climate change, inflation, trade, population growth and balance of payments.

According to the finance minister, “This document aims to guide policy planning and inform public discussions ahead of the new fiscal year.”

Key Indicators

Aurangzeb mentioned a major reduction in the policy rate from 22% to 11%, describing it as a “record cut.” He noted record recoveries in the power sector due to ongoing reforms.

The finance minister shared that Pakistan’s exports rose by 7% while IT exports reached $2.8 billion, with freelancers earning $400 million.

He added that imports increased by 11.7%, yet the current account showed a surplus of $1.9 billion from July to April, mainly due to a 26% increase in revenue collection.

Aurangzeb said, “Remittances increased by around $10 billion in two years,” calling it a significant contribution to foreign exchange.

He further shared that the number of individual tax filers doubled, calling it a positive result of the government’s tax net expansion.

Speaking on economic recovery, he said, “Islamabad has recovered in terms of GDP growth compared to global growth.”

He also noted that global inflation dropped from 6.8% to 0.3%, while Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves improved significantly.

“We now have to move towards GDP stabilisation,” he added, stating that the country is moving in a “better direction.”

He projected that Pakistan’s GDP will grow by 5.7% over the medium term.

Revenue and Remittances

The survey noted that total revenue grew by 36.7% to Rs13,367 billion between July and March.

Tax revenue rose by 26.3% to Rs9,300.2 billion, while non-tax revenue increased by 68% to Rs4,229.7 billion. FBR matched the overall tax collection figure at Rs9,300.2 billion.

The fiscal deficit narrowed to 2.6% of GDP, and the primary balance showed a surplus of Rs3,468.7 billion, equivalent to 3.0% of GDP.

From July 2024 to April 2025, remittances totaled $31.2 billion, marking a 31% year-on-year rise from $23.8 billion in FY2024.

Aurangzeb said this “was instrumental in supporting the $1.9 billion current account surplus.”

Inflation

On the monetary front, CPI inflation averaged 4.7% during July–April FY2025, with April 2025 inflation dipping to 0.3%, marking a multi-decade low.

While core inflation figures were not explicitly stated, the State Bank of Pakistan reduced the policy rate by 1,100 basis points since June 2024 in response to easing price pressures. The KIBOR also declined to 11.3%.

Agriculture Sector

In FY2025, Pakistan’s agriculture sector recorded a modest growth of 0.56%. Within this sector, important crops declined by 13.49%, while cotton ginning fell by 19.03%.

Moreover, livestock demonstrated strong performance with a 4.72% increase and other crops grew by 4.78%.

Crops which took a hit include maize (-15.4%) and rice (-1.4%). Potato and onion crop yield increased by 11.5% and 15.9%, respectively.

Industrial sector

The industrial sector posted a 4.77% growth in FY2025. However, performance varied across subsectors: mining and quarrying declined by 3.38% and large-scale manufacturing (LSM) contracted by 1.53%.

On the positive side, electricity, gas and water supply surged by 28.88%, while construction registered a growth of 6.61%.

Service Sector

The services sector expanded by 2.91% during FY2025, with mixed trends across its components. Wholesale and retail trade saw minimal growth of 0.14%, while transport and storage improved by 2.20%.

The finance and insurance subsector rose by 3.22%, general government services increased substantially by 9.92%, and other private services grew by 3.64%.

External Sector

In the external sector, exports increased by 6.4% to $26.9 billion, while imports rose by 7.5% to $48.3 billion, resulting in a $21.3 billion trade deficit.

The exchange rate stabilised at Rs278.72 per dollar, and foreign reserves reached $16.64 billion.

Social Protection

For social protection, the government allocated Rs471 billion to the BISP in FY2025.

This included Rs366.9 billion under Benazir Kafaalat for 8.5 million families, Rs55.4 billion under Taleemi Wazaif for 7.96 million children and Rs5.48 billion for 0.7 million mothers and children under Benazir Nashonuma.

Education Spending

The government spent 0.8% of GDP on education from July 2024 to March 2025. Pakistan’s literacy rate stands at 60.6%, with male literacy at 68% and female literacy at 52.8%.

There are 269 universities, including 160 public and 109 private institutions. A total of Rs61.1 billion was allocated for higher education, and PhD faculty members stand at 37.97%.

The residents of the port city are expected to face hot and humid weather for the next 24 hours, along with chances of strong winds, as a severe heatwave continues in the country, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) on Sunday.

The PMD stated that Karachi’s weather will likely remain hot and humid over the next three days, and any relief will only come in the form of intermittent strong winds.

Temperatures in Karachi are expected to stay between 35°C and 37°C. Today’s minimum temperature was recorded at 28.2°C.

Humidity in the city is currently at 78%. However, sea winds are blowing at a speed of 16 kilometres per hour. The PMD also reported high air pressure in the region.

The weather department shared that Balochistan is also going through an intense heatwave. This heatwave may continue until June 12.

In Quetta and nearby areas, the weather is clear and dry. The northern districts of Balochistan are dry, while the southern and central areas are hot.

Temperatures in Balochistan are now 4°C to 6°C higher than usual. On Saturday, Sibi recorded 49°C, Turbat reached 41°C, and Nokkundi reported 43°C.

The upper and central parts of Sindh are also under heatwave alert. The PMD said that temperatures in these areas will be 3°C to 5°C above normal until June 12.

People living in affected regions are advised to stay safe. They should drink plenty of water and avoid going out in direct sunlight for long periods.

Colombia’s Senator Miguel Uribe Undergoes Surgery after Shooting Attack

colombias-would-be-presidential-candidate-miguel-uribe-shot

Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe, a possible candidate for the 2026 presidential election, was shot and injured during a campaign event in Bogota on Saturday.

On Sunday, Mayor Carlos Fernando Galan said that the 39-year-old “overcame the first surgical intervention” and is now in “the critical hours” of recovery.

Uribe, who belongs to the opposition Democratic Centre party, was shot in the back by “armed subjects.”

This happened while he was speaking at a public park in the Fontibon neighbourhood. The party described the shooting as “an unacceptable act of violence.”

Following the incident, Uribe was taken to the Santa Fe Foundation hospital. According to a medical report, he was in critical condition and needed a “neurosurgical and peripheral vascular procedure.”

His wife, Maria Claudia Tarazona, posted on X that he was “fighting for his life.” Meanwhile, videos on social media showed Uribe bleeding from the head as bystanders helped him.

Police officers cordon off the area where Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe Turbay of the opposition Democratic Center party, was shot during a campaign event, in Bogota, Colombia, June 7, 2025.

The Attorney General’s Office confirmed that Uribe sustained two gunshot wounds. Two others were also injured.

Moreover, a 15-year-old boy was arrested at the scene with a firearm. In response, the government is offering a $730,000 reward for any useful information.

President Gustavo Petro expressed sympathy on X. He stated, “Respect life, that’s the red line… My solidarity [is] with the Uribe family and the Turbay family. I don’t know how to ease their pain.”

Later, in a speech on Saturday night, Petro said the investigation would aim to find who ordered the attack. He added that any security lapses would also be examined.

Global Reactions

Reactions poured in from across the world. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio condemned the shooting and blamed Petro’s “inflammatory rhetoric.”

Similarly, Chilean President Gabriel Boric and Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa also condemned the violence. Both expressed support for Uribe’s family.

Former President Alvaro Uribe commented, “They attacked the hope of the country, a great husband, father, son, brother, a great colleague.”

Miguel Uribe comes from a prominent Colombian family. His mother, journalist Diana Turbay, was kidnapped by Pablo Escobar’s group in 1990. Tragically, she was killed during a rescue mission in 1991.

What did President Zardari Say in His Eid al-Adha Greeting?

what-did-president-zardari-say-in-his-eid-ul-adha-greeting

Eid Al-Adha has brought warm wishes from President Asif Ali Zardari to the people of Pakistan and Muslims worldwide. He stressed the need to live by values like sacrifice, love, brotherhood, and unity in daily life.

“This day revives in us the spirit of faith, sacrifice, selflessness, and brotherhood,” he said. I hope Allah Almighty makes this day a source of riches, harmony, and blessings for both our nation and the whole Muslim Ummah. Ameen.”

President Zardari said Eid Al-Adha honours the obedience and sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Ismail (AS). He called their loyalty and selflessness a guiding example for all of us.

“These great personalities provide a shining example of dedication, loyalty, selflessness, and sacrifice by entirely submitting to the will of Allah Almighty,” he said. “This day reminds us that no sacrifice is too much when seeking Allah’s pleasure. Our success, both personal and collective, lies in obeying His will.”

He urged everyone to live by the same spirit of sacrifice shown by Prophet Ibrahim (AS). Helping others and bringing ease to their lives, he said, is key.

President Zardari emphasised the need to support the underprivileged and struggling members of society. He reminded everyone that Eid al-Adha is not only about animal sacrifice. It also calls us to make a strong promise to care for the poor, sick, and needy.

“As a country, we have to stand by one another,” he said. “We should grieve together and work side by side to build a rich and wonderful Pakistan.”

He also called on Pakistanis to pledge to remove hatred and bias from their hearts. Everyone, he said, must work with honesty and unity for national progress and the betterment of the Muslim world.

May Allah accept our sacrifices, provide Pakistan peace, growth, and prosperity, and bless us with the power to become a cohesive and strong country. Ameen,” he concluded.

Shehbaz Sharif’s Eid Message Highlights Unity and Faith

shehbaz-sharifs-eid-message-highlights-unity-and-faith

On Eid al-Adha Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif extend his best wishes to the people of Pakistan and Muslims worldwide. He also urged everyone to remember the oppressed people of Palestine and Kashmir.

In his message for Eid al-Adha 1446 Hijri, the Prime Minister said, “I felicitate from the core of my heart the whole Pakistani nation and the Islamic world on the blessed occasion of Eid Al-Adha and the magnificent Islamic ritual of Hajj.”

These holy days remind us of the strong faith, sacrifice, and selflessness of Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and Hazrat Ismail (AS). Allah Almighty valued their devotion so much that He made their actions part of religious worship.

The Prime Minister prayed, “May Allah Almighty accept the prayers and sacrifices of the whole Pakistani nation and the Muslim Ummah.” He added, “These blessed occasions should come in our lives again and again. Amen.”

He explained that Eid Al-Adha is more than animal sacrifice. It also means giving up personal desires and interests for higher goals. This spirit teaches patience, bravery, sacrifice, and kindness—traits essential for national growth.

Shehbaz Sharif said Pakistan is progressing. He stressed that now is the time to adopt unity and the spirit of sacrifice. “The road of sacrifice leads to success,” he stated.

He mentioned the recent Indian attack and how the nation stood together. “The entire country stood united and solidly against the enemy sending a clear message that the Pakistani people will not hesitate to offer any sacrifice for its defence and dignity,” he said.

He added that the same unity is needed to overcome internal challenges. “We must recognize our economic and social responsibilities. We need to combine our resources to make Pakistan strong, flourishing, and self-sufficient,” he said.

Eid Al-Adha reminds us that real progress comes when we work for collective good, not just personal gain. He urged people to remember Palestinians suffering from violence and starvation.

He also reaffirmed strong support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir. “We will always be their voice and will support their great movement,” he said.

He encouraged the nation to build a future based on love, unity, and brotherhood. “We have to move forward with the will to make Pakistan appear at the world level as a strong and prosperous nation,” he said.

He added that the dream of Pakistan’s success will come true when national interest comes before personal interest.

“The message of Eid ul Azha urges us to rise above our own desires and interests and focus only on the welfare and well being of our nation, therefore acting to reach the noble aims,” he said. He added, “Undoubtedly, this unity and attitude will alter Pakistan’s fate.”

He ended his message with a prayer: “I ask Allah Almighty to grant us the actual joy of EidulAzha and arm us to behave in accordance with the true spirit of sacrifice and compassion.”

Is this the End of the Trump-Musk Power Duo?

Is This the End of the Trump-Musk Power Duo?

Donald Trump and Elon Musk‘s political relationship came to an abrupt public confrontation. During a conversation in the Oval Office, Trump expressed his “very disappointed” at Musk after the billionaire criticized his “big, beautiful” spending package before Congress.

Payback, Trump warned, he might cancel Musk’s substantial government contracts. Musk countered X by claiming Trump would not have won the 2024 election without him. Without any evidence, he even asserted that American papers on Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender, featured Trump.

The battle worsened as both began attacking one other on social media. Tesla’s stock dropped and Musk stated he would end a major American spaceship initiative. Though many had expected their partnership to end, the abrupt breakup shocked some in Washington.

“I am very upset in Elon. I have supported Elon a lot,” President Trump said next to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. “Elon and I got along very well. I’m not sure if we will any longer.”

Trump sounded offended and reminded everyone that just last week he had hosted Musk for a farewell at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Trump later referred to Musk as “crazy” and stated he ordered him to leave since he was “wearing thin.”

Live on X, Musk said Trump was ungrateful. He wrote, “Trump is in the Epstein records,” referencing US documents on Epstein. He concluded that post with “Have a nice day, DJT!”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told AFP that Musk’s post about Epstein was “an unhappy episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the ‘One Big Beautiful Bill’ because it does not include the policies he wanted.”

Musk had contributed $300 million as a leading campaign sponsor for Trump. He also agreed with a post suggesting Trump ought to be impeached and stated Trump’s worldwide tariffs might cause a recession.

Trump next stated he might remove Musk’s large government contracts including Starlink satellite use and rocket launches. On Truth Social, he wrote, “The simplest way to save money in our Budget, Billions of Dollars, is to end Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts.”

Musk responded by noting he would begin “decommissioning” the Dragon spacecraft NASA uses to send astronauts. Later, he seemed to change his mind and replied to a user, “OK, we won’t decommission Dragon,” but it was uncertain what he truly meant.

During the argument, Tesla lost over $100 billion in value. Before, Trump and Musk were friends, with Musk even residing at the White House and riding Air Force One.

Musk only held his DOGE position for four months. He grew annoyed at gradual changes and found problems with Trump’s staff. They kept their arguments under wraps until Musk referred to Trump’s tax and spending measure as an “abomination” for expanding the deficit.

Musk then issued a poll asking whether he ought to form a fresh political party. This might be a major move since he has the financial means to oppose Republicans who go against him. According to The New York Times, a Trump supporter named Steve Bannon allegedly advocated Musk’s deportation.

Anoushey Ashraf Exposes the Dark Underbelly of Punjab

Pakistani media figure Anoushey Ashraf spoke out on social media in a strong post that has gone viral, addressing the deep-seated societal problems affecting Punjab, particularly the southern parts of the province.

Her emotionally charged, heartfelt post referred to the murder of Sana Yousuf, and no matter how tragic the case, it takes a crime against a woman, a young woman, for people to realise that something needs to be done.

Speaking Up for the Voiceless

Anoushey’s words were direct and heart-wrenching:

“Many stories coming in from Punjab. Hate saying this, but child rape, catcalling, perversion, and religious extremism are deeply rooted in the province. The south, in particular is pretty bad. And yet, the government does nothing to change this sick mindset. Nothing.”

She certainly did not stop there. Intent on providing survivors a voice, she posted several anonymous stories from those who had experienced trauma, harassment, and abuse, some for many years in silence.

The Stories that Haunt Us

An Internship Disaster (2004)

One alarming account came from a woman suffering predatory behaviour on an internship in Islamabad at 20 years old. The CEO of a highly reputable bank did this to her as she interned with him in his office. She described:

“He began asking extremely inappropriate and personal questions. I was frozen. Afraid. I knew the building was nearly empty…”

Years passed, and the emotional repercussions of that day remained with her always. She had been afraid to say anything then, but Anoushey’s platform made it possible for her now.

The Relationship That Became a Nightmare

Another contributor described an emotionally abusive relationship that escalated to threats and stalking. Her partner tracked her movements and made horrifying threats.

“Be safe when going out… If I can’t have you, no one can.”

the-relationship-that-became-a-nightmare
The relationship that became a nightmare

Her story highlights how fear can keep victims tied to their abusers long after the end of the relationship.

Inappropriate Behaviour in Public Spaces

One woman shared a horrific incident with a taxi driver who exposed himself. He also had a flashlight to go with it.

the-horrific-experience-with-a-taxi-driver

Another discussed an even older encounter with a man who flashed her and her family in a busy market in Islamabad.

The assessment of what happened to women in these types of “exposure” incidents is impossible.

sexual-abuse-as-a-child
Sexual abuse as a child

Generational Trauma and Cultural Silence

Mothers, sisters, and daughters all had stories of being silenced by family or society. One contributor stated:

“Mothers don’t teach their boys because they’ve been through it themselves… They are enablers. And they don’t even know it.”

generational-trauma-and-cultural-silence
Generational trauma and cultural silence

This reveals a systemic cycle of denial and suppression that needs to be interrupted.

Boys and Girls, Both Victims

The testimonies are not limited to girls. One was from a young boy who experienced harassment when returning from a religious ceremony; the irony of the setting was unsettlingly brutal.

The narratives illustrate how predators act with impunity, and that boys are not spared either.

Fear as a Constant Companion

Victims report experiencing anxiety and fear that lingers with them long after the events. One individual shared the experience of being constantly harassed while on a bus and threatened with bodily harm:

“I have a knife. If you move or make a sound, I’ll kill you right here.”

the-bus-ride
The bus ride

The story demonstrates the dire need for safer public spaces in our country.

When Love Turns Deadly

In another story, a young female narrowly avoided the same fear of abduction. Her ex-boyfriend threatened to kill her at gunpoint if she broke up with him. Fortunately, her mother intervened, but it was a terrifying experience.

when-love-turns-deadly

A Society Crying for Change

As the stories poured in, Anoushey reached a breaking point:

“Emotionally, mentally, and physically exhausted after reading all the messages in my inbox. I’ve tried to share as many as I could… Thank you for writing to me.”

She concluded her message with a heartfelt plea for unity and support:

“Stand up for one another and stand by one another.”

Where Do We Go From Here?

These are not just stories; these are calls for justice, safety, and change. Anoushey Ashraf peeled back the curtain on a reality many have turned a blind eye to. Now, the responsibility lies with society, and most importantly the government, to act.

Silence shields predators. Anoushey’s courage in amplifying these stories allows us to face the ugly truths that lurk in European society. It’s time to listen. It’s time to act. And it’s time to be together.

What did Sheikh Saleh Say About Palestine in the Hajj Sermon?

what-did-sheikh-saleh-say-about-palestine-in-the-hajj-2025-sermon

Member of the Saudi Council of Senior Scholars and Imam of Masjid al-Haram, Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid, gave the Hajj 2025 address at Masjid al-Namirah on Thursday.

In the sermon, he prayed, “O Allah, help the people of Palestine and destroy its enemies.” He then begged, “O Allah, pardon the martyred of Palestine and fully heal the wounded.”

These remarks looked for heavenly help and highlighted Palestinian pain.

Sheikh Saleh urged Muslims to continue praying and paying zakat to assist the less fortunate. As Allah commands, he reminded the faithful to seek goodness, take care of their neighbours, and show devotion. He also emphasised openness, compassion, and kindness.

He asked Muslims to honour and treat their parents with love. The sermon urged honesty and caution against arrogance and pride. The Imam instructed followers to stay true to pledges and refrain from violating responsibilities.

“The devil is out to divide them,” he warned.

He also urged, “Iblees is your adversary, avoid following him and keep praying to Allah.” The lecture emphasised compassion for orphans, widows, and the less fortunate. It centred on avoiding evil and working together on good deeds.

Millions of Hajj worshippers were at Mount Arafat to hear the sermon. One of the five pillars of Islam, the hajj is a spiritual trip Muslims are meant to undertake once in their lifetime if they are able to do so. Delivered on the Day of Arafah, the Arafat sermon is also known as the Hajj Khutba. Muslims worldwide watch it as a crucial event in Islam.

Muslims from several countries gathered under this sermon, which reminded them of unity, love, and steadfast faith. It also underlined spiritual development and social responsibilities.

“No Means No” But Our Pakistani Dramas Think Otherwise

In an ideal world, “no” is a complete sentence. It is a boundary, a right, a final word. But in Pakistani dramas, that “no” is too often rewritten. It is reimagined as an invitation to persist, an opening for obsession, or a prelude to romance.

She is saying no? Oh, try harder, because Danish Taimoor was doing it too. She is resisting? Remember how Feroze Khan got his way by getting aggressive.

And then in the real world, a woman’s “no” frequently becomes her death sentence.

Entertainment Becomes Enabling

The brutal murder of Sana Yousaf is a major example of the impact these dramas have in real life. The 17-year-old MINOR from Islamabad was shot by 22-year-old Umar Hayat for rejecting his marriage proposal. That too in her own house.

Her crime? Refusal. Her Punishment? Death.

This is not a standalone incident. It is a symptom of a deep, cultural disease, one that our drama industry helps feed daily. It’s a systematic glorification of male insecurity.

Her life was cut short because someone could not take “no” for an answer. And disturbingly, this inability to accept rejection is a narrative we continuously normalise on screen.

Romanticism of Stalking and Abuse

Pakistani dramas are saturated with stories that confuse harassment with affection.

Men who stalk women, pressurise them, break their trust, or force themselves into their lives are often glamorised as “passionate lovers.” The woman says “no,” but he persists.

She rejects him, but he waits outside her college. She disapproves, but he slaps her, and somehow, this is framed as intense love. By the final episode, she falls for him, and the message is clear: persistence pays off, and her “no” was never really serious.

What these narratives fail to show is that, in reality, the man doesn’t just wait. He threatens. He harasses. He harms. Sometimes, he kills.

Media and Its Power For Normalisation

The link between media portrayal and real-life attitudes isn’t imaginary.

Numerous studies have shown that repeated exposure to media that romanticises abuse or manipulation can desensitise audiences, particularly young viewers, to toxic behaviours.

When a man slaps a woman in a drama and later marries her in a supposed happy ending, what message does that send to impressionable minds? That violence is forgivable if it comes from love? That boundaries are made to be broken?

The entertainment industry wields enormous influence in shaping societal norms. Yet instead of challenging misogyny, many dramas reinforce it.

We don’t need more stories where men pursue women relentlessly until they give in. We need stories where “no” is heard, understood and respected. Where love is not measured by control or aggression but by mutual respect.

Sana’s voice has been silenced forever, but the message must echo louder than ever:

“No” means no. Not later, not maybe, not ever.

Why are Pakistanis Risking Everything to Migrate?

Thousands of Pakistanis are taking their lives into their own hands to migrate to Europe, specifically Italy, out of a combination of economic instability, political unrest, and individual insecurity.

Despite the risks, including drowning and exploitation at the hands of smugglers, few feel they have no choice but to undertake these dangerous trips.

Rising Numbers, Rising Risks

Italy is now a top destination for Pakistani immigrants. In 2023, Pakistan made up around 10% of migrants into Italy, more than double the 3% of the previous year. This increase comes with deteriorating conditions in Pakistan, which has encouraged more to look elsewhere for asylum.

Why-are-Pakistanis-Risking-Everything-to-Migrate?
Despite the risks, including drowning, few feel they have a choice.

The journeys undertaken are perilous. Most migrants travel via Iran and Turkey before trying to make the crossing in the Mediterranean Sea. Others take the Central Mediterranean route from Libya, Tunisia, or Egypt.

These crossings tend to be in overcrowded and unsuitable boats, resulting in the loss of several lives. In June 2023, a vessel with approximately 750 migrants, of which more than 200 were Pakistani, sank off the Greek coast, recording one of the most fatal shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea.

A similar incident also took place in December 2024, when media reported that a wooden boat carrying migrants capsized off the island of Gavdos in southern Greece. The FIA found many Pakistani victims near the site of the incident.

Root Causes of Migration

Few decisions are made light-headed. Surveys show that 54% of Pakistani migrants identify violence, insecurity, and conflict as major drivers. Another 36% point to a lack of rights and freedom, and 33% refer to economic factors.

The floods in Pakistan in 2022 also further compounded these challenges, displacing millions and eliminating livelihoods.

For most, migration is the only hope. Most migrants feel they have no choice but to depart their home country in pursuit of a better life.

Why-are-Pakistanis-Risking-Everything-to-Migrate?
Floods in 2022 further compounded challenges, resulting in more people migrating from Pakistan.

The Human Cost

The European journey is dangerous. Migrants are vulnerable to human traffickers who take advantage of their desperation. In January 2025, Moroccan police rescued 22 Pakistani men from a stranded vessel in the Atlantic Ocean.

Sadly, at least 43 others died of hunger, dehydration, and abuse by smugglers.

Survivors describe terrible experiences, such as being packed below deck, where survival chances in the event of capsizing are low. This happened during the June 2023 disaster near Greece, where most Pakistanis were allegedly trapped below deck.

Seeking Solutions

The rising tide of Pakistani migrants confirms the necessity for an all-encompassing resolution. The elimination of the underlying causes of migration, including economic uncertainty and insecurity, is important.

International collaboration is also necessary to fight human trafficking and offer safe, legal avenues for migration.

Unless coordinated action is taken, the senseless loss of life will persist, and the urgency behind Pakistanis risking everything for a brighter tomorrow will not be attended to.

Shaheen, Sufiyan Likely to Return for Pakistan’s Tour of Bangladesh

shaheen-afridi-sufiyan-return-for-pakistan-tour-of-bangladesh

Star fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi and left-arm spinner Sufiyan Muqeem are likely to return to the Pakistan men’s team during their return tour to Bangladesh for a three-match T20I series, set to be played in late July.

Shaheen’s Shot at Redemption

It’s no secret that Shaheen Shah Afridi hasn’t quite looked like his usual self lately. His last appearance in the green shirt came during the T20I series against New Zealand in March, and to be fair, it wasn’t his best outing.

With just two wickets in four matches and an economy rate touching 10.23, it was clear something was off. But here’s the thing — class is permanent, and Shaheen’s fiery spells have bailed Pakistan out on more occasions than we can count.

Now, with a fresh series ahead and a chance to reboot, the left-arm pacer is all set for a comeback. Could this be his moment to silence the doubters? We’ll soon find out.

Sufiyan Muqeem — Quiet but Deadly

While all eyes were on the usual suspects, Sufiyan Muqeem quietly made a statement in the same series against New Zealand. He got only one game, but boy, did he make it count.

The young spinner scalped two wickets while conceding just six runs in two overs — that’s an economy rate of 3.00, folks. That’s not just good, that’s eye-popping in modern T20 cricket.

If he gets a longer rope this time around, Sufiyan could be a real game-changer for Pakistan, especially on Bangladesh tracks that love a bit of spin.

What About Babar?

Ah, the ever-burning question — where does Babar Azam fit in all of this? According to sources, the door is still wide open for the former captain.

In fact, he’s reportedly been assured of future opportunities, which means we might see him back in the squad soon — if not in this tour, then likely the next.

While some fans are eager to see a fresh-look Pakistan, Babar’s class and consistency are hard to ignore, especially in crunch situations. The question now is timing — when, not if, he returns.

What Does China Want With Pakistan’s Donkeys?

what-does-china-want-with-pakistans-donkeys

To many in Pakistan, donkeys are more than animals. They are lifelines. Gulzar, a 50-year-old labourer in Karachi, relies on his donkey to carry iron around the city. He makes as much as Rs1,600 a day, almost half of which goes towards the upkeep of the animal.

Like hundreds of others, Gulzar is concerned about increased costs, high mortality rates, and reduced availability of healthy donkeys.

A Booming Global Demand

While prices soar at home, the demand originates in China. The thriving ejiao industry in China, valued at billions, is built on donkey hide-derived gelatin.

The ingredient, well-known in traditional Chinese medicine, promises to cure fatigue, enhance immune function, and aid in blood deficiency, primarily among women.

What-Does-China-Want-With-Pakistan’s-Donkeys?
Donkeys demand boom in China.

With China’s donkey population dwindling by 80% in the last three decades, it looked towards imports. Following the banning of the donkey skin trade by African countries, China’s next big supplier happened to be Pakistan.

China’s Eyes on Pakistan’s Donkeys

Pakistan exported a total of more than 157,000 hides to China legally in 2023 alone. Chinese businesses now also wish to establish donkey farms within Pakistan, hailing the climate for breeding. This will also further strengthen the economic relationship between the two countries

A written proposal is currently being discussed, and officials indicate that it would be a source of employment and tax income.

However, this commerce is not consequence-free.

Threat to Local Communities

About 36 million Pakistanis rely on equine labour. Donkeys support work in agriculture, waste collection, transport, and brick kilns. Removing these animals from the local areas to export would destroy livelihoods.

Dr. Sher Nawaz from Brooke Pakistan shared stories of families who rent donkeys just to survive. “Losing a donkey often means losing your only income,” he said.

For most owners, donkeys are not an asset—they’re friends. Some won’t even sell them to Chinese buyers. Cultural and ethical tensions increase as slaughterhouses open close to areas such as Gwadar, for export purposes only.

Pakistan has no strong legal safeguards for donkeys. Current animal welfare laws were enacted in 1890 and provide little more than minor penalties for cruelty. Meanwhile, infections such as anthrax and equine flu pose public health risks from uncontrolled slaughter.

A Call for Sustainability

Experts say Pakistan needs to create sustainable breeding and health infrastructure first before trade is enlarged. Others advocate alternatives such as laboratory-cultured collagen to relieve the pressure on donkeys.

But ejiao’s cultural heritage might make it difficult to accept.

In this struggle between tradition, economy, and survival, one thing remains certain: the humble donkey is at the heart of a global and ethical conundrum.

Hajj 2025: Hajj Meets High Tech

hajj-2025-hajj-meets-high-tech

Hajj is the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and is a mandatory religious duty for all capable Muslims. This year, Hajj 2025 began on June 4 and will end on June 9. This time, the experience is remarkably different from the traditional one.

Problems Faced by Pilgrims in the Past Years

Hajj is one of the biggest religious gatherings around the world and it comes with a cost. By early June, over 1 million visitors had already arrived in Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj pilgrimage. Having so many people moving around in one comparatively small area has led to problems in the past for pilgrims.

Thousands of pilgrims were killed in stampeding crowds in 1990 and 2015. Even last year, over 1,300 died due to extreme heat. This is because pilgrims often walk up to 65 kilometres a day in 40-to-50 degrees Celsius heat.

There have also been fires, protests, suicides, collapsing buildings and infectious diseases at the Hajj, as well as more everyday problems like people getting lost or having health problems.

Last year’s many deaths were mostly of pilgrims who didn’t have official permission to be there and therefore couldn’t access services like air-conditioned shelters in the extreme heat.

Integration of High Tech in Hajj 2025

This year’s Hajj stands as a testament to Saudi Arabia’s commitment to modernising the pilgrimage.

Saudi Arabia will use drones with thermal imaging as well as artificial intelligence and facial recognition technology to ensure that only those who have Hajj permits are allowed in.

Nusuk System

To avoid overcrowding, Saudi Arabia’s Nusuk website (also a mobile phone application) allows attendees to register to enter certain areas at allotted times. This system includes an electronic identity card and a smart wristband. It will hold information on the user’s identity, travel plans, finances, health and accommodation.

Some of the wristbands have location tracking, monitor the wearer’s blood oxygen levels and heart rate, and can even be used to call for medical help.

Moreover, the Nusuk card must be carried throughout the pilgrimage and is used to access transport and other services. To manage the influx of pilgrims efficiently, biometric capture and registration stations have also been established at border points.

Entry without biometrics won’t be an option anymore.

“All of these technologies are mandatory and those who refuse them are not allowed to perform the pilgrimage,” explains Zeinab Ismail, a researcher and editor at the Lebanon-based digital rights organisation, SMEX.

Robots and AI

Other technological advancements includes Hajj robot guides. Yes, robots will be used to guide visitors around religious sites and give them water, Quran and other essentials. These robots can give advice in up to 11 languages until now (i.e. Manarah 2).

The introduction of AI-powered surveillance and crowd management systems has significantly improved safety and efficiency. Drones will be used for surveilling, and thermal imaging will be used.

Medical services have also seen significant upgrades. AI-assisted emergency response systems ensure timely healthcare, and mobile stroke units have been deployed to address medical emergencies promptly.

Other Technological Advancements

There are also newly paved, more reflective (and therefore cooler) streets, paths that minimise heat for walking comfort. Additionally, shaded walkways and misting fans have been installed in key areas like Mina and Arafat to offer respite from the scorching temperatures.

A special white pilgrim’s gown will be available for pilgrims, it is made from futuristic fabric that keeps the wearer up to 2 degrees Celsius cooler.

To address the challenges posed by extreme heat, Saudi authorities have also implemented the world’s largest mosque cooling system in the Grand Mosque. This will help provide climate-controlled environments for pilgrims.

Health kits and educational materials, developed with the Ministry of Health, are available in at least eight languages, including Arabic, English, French, Urdu, Persian, Indonesian, Malay and Turkish.

Religion and Innovation Must Be Balanced

While technology has undoubtedly enhanced the Hajj experience, it also raises questions about maintaining spiritual sincerity in an age of constant digital connection.

Pilgrims are encouraged to use these tools mindfully, ensuring that technology serves as an aid rather than a distraction from their spiritual journey.

The integration of technology into Hajj 2025 exemplifies how tradition and innovation can coexist, offering a more accessible, safe, and enriching experience for pilgrims worldwide.

World Environment Day: Here’s How You Can Make this Eid al-Adha Eco-Friendly

This year, two significant days come one after the other. World Environment Day is on 5th June, and Eid al-Adha will fall on 6 or 7th June, depending on where you live. It’s a great time to reminisce, rejoice, and safeguard the planet, together!

Here are some easy ways to keep your Eid al-Adha celebrations green and eco-friendly without giving up on tradition.

1. Reduce Food Waste

Plan meals carefully and prepare only what you can eat or give away. I know that Eid al-Adha is a festival of meat and most of us tend to go overboard, but this year, lets try to store leftovers well and donate excess food if you can.

Remember, when food decomposes in landfills, it produces methane—a potent greenhouse gas that harms the environment in so many ways. Reducing waste benefits both humans and the Earth.

2. Select Natural Cleaning Products

Now that our homes and streets are going to be filled with blood stains, it is important that we skip toxic chemical cleaners and opt for safe, homemade alternatives. These can include vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice.

These natural products clean equally well and don’t contaminate water or harm wildlife.

3. Opt for Reusable Water Bottles

Instead of buying tens of plastic water bottles for dawats, try circulating water in a stainless steel or glass bottle. What we often don’t realise is that how much plastic wastage can be brought down if we simply start being more mindful of the little things.

Plastic is strangling our oceans and streets. It’s about time we take an initiative.

4. Experiment with Plant-Based Meals

Eid al-Adha is all about meat-based meals—mutton, beef, barbeque, and so much more. However, amid all these meaty meals, try incorporating some plant-based meals as well. They can help lower the environmental footprint and also be good for your health.

Even one or two vegetarian meals can make a difference. It’s a kind gesture to the earth as well as to the spirit of giving.

Small Steps, Big Impact

You do not need to change overnight. You just need to make a few conscious choices and help the world—and encourage others to do the same. While we celebrate sacrifice and gratitude on Eid al-Adha, let us also be kind to the earth.

So let this Eid be a turning point—a day of joy, reflection, and sustainability.

India-Pakistan Tensions Cast Shadow Over Asia Cup 2025

pakistan-stance-after-india-champions-trophy-refusal-fusion-formula-pcb-to-release-additional-champions-trophy-2025-tickets-sarfaraz-ahmed-saqlain-mushtaq-asia-cup-2025

Cricket fans across Asia were excited for the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2025, which was supposed to be the next big thing after the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025. But now, uncertainty looms large due to the India-Pakistan political standoff.

Just when everyone was gearing up for another mouth-watering India-Pakistan clash, cross-border tensions have once again put the tournament’s fate on shaky ground.

A Tournament Hanging by a Thread

Initially, the six-nation Asia Cup was all set to be hosted by India. But over the past few weeks, reports have trickled in suggesting that India might withdraw due to the political situation. That has caused quite a stir — understandably so.

However, the BCCI was quick to dismiss those reports, quashing the withdrawal rumours. For a moment, it seemed like the storm had passed. But not quite.

In a fresh twist, a top BCCI official told Reuters that the board hasn’t even discussed the Asia Cup internally. “To be honest, we have had no discussions within the board about the Asia Cup,” a senior BCCI official told Reuters.

That’s a big deal. When a tournament of this scale — featuring cricketing heavyweights like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh — is around the corner, and the host board says they haven’t discussed it yet, you know something’s off.

Pakistan’s Response?

You’d think with India uncertain, Pakistan might double down on hosting duties or at least confirm participation. But the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) isn’t offering any concrete assurances either.

“We will cross that bridge when we come to it,” a PCB spokesperson told Reuters.

In other words, they’re waiting to see how things unfold — not exactly a confident statement.

This “wait and see” attitude from both sides only adds more confusion. And the silence from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), which is headed by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, hasn’t helped clear the air either.

With neither the BCCI nor PCB giving a definitive green light, and with no dates locked in, the Asia Cup 2025 is very much in limbo. The tournament needs quick, clear decisions, but the current lack of urgency is worrying for cricket fans all over Asia.
