The Trendsetter of Cab Hailing, Careem, Has Quit

the-trendsetter-of-cab-hailing-careem-has-quit

As announced by the co-founder and CEO, Mudassir Sheikha, Careem will discontinue its cab-hailing service in Pakistan on July 18, and will stop functioning from September 18. A trendsetter in the competitive taxi market, Sheikha and his team revolutionised the ride-hailing business.

Launched in 2015, Careeem thrived for nearly a decade, creating countless jobs for registered drivers and providing safe rides for women in a conservative society.

While the cab-hailing services may be sunsetting, Sheikha claimed that Careem will take a different direction in Pakistan with the Everything App set to expand its footprint.

Intense Competition Drove Careem Rides Out of Business

In his announcement on LinkedIn, Sheikha also acknowledged the many reasons for shutting down Careem’s cab-hailing services. He cited intensifying competition in the taxi market as one of the causes.

The ride-hailing industry in Pakistan experienced a boom in the last few years, leading to saturation and intense competition. Careem has strong competitors like inDrive and Yango, which reduced its stronghold on the market.

inDrive operates on a bidding system, allowing users to find the cheapest and most affordable rides. Careem introduced the Flexi Ride Model to compete with this bidding system, but inDrive had already attracted many with its low fares.

Yango also offered discounted fares for its consumers, along with performance-based incentives for its drivers. During times of soaring inflation rates, cheap rides were the need of the hour, and Careem’s competitors excelled in this domain.

However, Sheikha also acknowledged that Pakistan’s challenging macroeconomic landscape and global fund allocation made Careem’s cab-hailing operations less profitable and feasible.

Drivers Preferred Careem Over Other Competitors

The bid-based model was attractive to customers, but riders felt it was a trap. Careem paid its captains better, but fewer users compelled drivers to switch to inDrive and Yango, which had more customers.

As some regular customers can relate, Careem had waiting charges, which were a justified benefit for drivers who had to patiently wait for customers. However, from a customer point of view, this was a disadvantage. This also caused them to leaned toward other altreatives.

While Careem is finding new ways of serving Pakistan, its contribution to the cab-hailing industry cannot be understated.

Iran’s Fordo Nuclear Site Isn’t an Easy Target, Here’s Why

irans-fordo-nuclear-site-isnt-an-easy-target-heres-why

Israel attacked the Natanz nuclear plant in Iran last week, but it hasn’t targeted Fordo, the nation’s most secretive and heavily defended enrichment site. So many wonder, why?

A Longstanding Source of Concern

Fordo is hidden deep inside a mountain south of Tehran. It is more than a nuclear site. For years, experts have cautioned that Fordo is Iran’s backup option, a facility planned to withstand attacks like the one against Natanz.

The site is almost impossible to blow up with conventional ordnance. The overlying mountain serves as a shield, and any frontal attack would need bunker-buster bombs, or something even more powerful.

irans-fordo-nuclear-site-isnt-an-east-target-heres-why
Iran’s Fordo Nuclear Site

U.S. and Israeli Intelligence Clash

But that’s not the sole reason Fordo has yet to be touched.

Israeli authorities think Fordo is the key to Iran’s nuclear aspirations. Brigadier General Effie Defrin said recently that Iran is hiding a weapons programme within facilities such as Fordo.

Israel asserts that its intelligence confirms that top Iranian scientists are carrying out experiments in weapons-grade enrichment. Iran disputes this. It maintains that its nuclear programme is purely for civilian purposes. But confidence is scarce.

American intelligence, up to March, didn’t think Iran was actively producing a bomb, but President Trump rejected that opinion. Trump indicated that he thinks Iran is “very close” to acquiring nuclear capabilities.

The situation is tense. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) declared Iran non-compliant with inspections for the first time in 20 years, just hours before Israel’s attack on Natanz. That only increased fears about what might be happening at Fordo.

Advanced Centrifuges Raise the Stakes

Weapons analyst Manuel Herrera has always been the most suspicious of the Fordo facility. It’s subterranean. It’s got tunnel complexes. And Iran has, in recent years, put in high-powered IR-6 centrifuges there—equipment capable of enriching uranium more rapidly and to a higher level.

irans-fordo-nuclear-site-isnt-an-east-target-heres-why
Iran’s Fordo Nuclear Site

The IAEA in 2023 confirmed that 84% enriched uranium had been found at Fordo. Weapons-grade is 90%. That’s perilously close.

So why hasn’t Israel struck Fordo yet? Probably because it can’t—at least not straightforwardly. The risk of escalation is also enormous. A direct strike could push the region further into conflict.

But as tensions rise and transparency diminishes, experts warn that the clock is ticking.

Has Israel Really Wiped Out 40% of Iran’s Missiles?

is-iran-running-out-of-missiles-as-its-attacks-on-israel-slow-down

Iran’s retaliatory attacks against Israel have significantly reduced over the last two days, according to experts.

This comes after Israel carried out a series of airstrikes targeting Iran’s missile silos and launching sites.

After firing more than 200 rockets in six waves on Friday and Saturday, Iran only managed two smaller waves the following day. Each wave consists of around three dozen missiles, said the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a US-based think tank.

On Monday, about 40 more missiles were fired, with the number dropping by half on Tuesday.

The Israeli military said it has successfully weakened Iran’s ability to launch further attacks. Furthermore, they are showing video footage of damaged Iranian missile sites since airstrikes began Friday.

According to ISW, Tehran had initially planned to launch 1,000 ballistic missiles in response to Israel’s preemptive strike on Friday.

However, that plan did not go through because Israel damaged many of the launchers and silos Iran needed.

ISW stated, “Iran has used significantly fewer munitions in its response to Israel than originally planned because the IDF destroyed and damaged missile launchers and silos that Iran planned to use to retaliate against Israel.”

Before the current conflict, US and Israeli officials believed Iran had about 2,000 missiles, though not all had the range to hit Israel.

That number is believed to have dropped significantly after Israel’s repeated strikes.

IDF Continues to Strike Iranian Missile Facilities

A drone video shared by Reuters showed damage to residential buildings in Tel Aviv caused by earlier Iranian attacks.

The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) estimated that about 40% of Iran’s ballistic missile capabilities have been destroyed since Friday.

The Israel Air Force also reported that over 70 Iranian air defence missile batteries have been taken out. The attack reportedly weakened Iran’s defence of its military infrastructure.

The Israeli military has stated it will continue to “hunt down” Iran’s missile silos and launchers. Videos of these successful operations are being regularly shared on IDF’s official social media platforms.

With Iran’s attacks now being smaller in scale, Israel’s Home Front Command has stopped issuing pre-launch alerts, giving citizens more time to seek shelter during any future missile strikes.

Trump Says Iran’s Supreme Leader is an Easy Target

trump-says-irans-supreme-leader-is-an-easy-target-but-we-wont-hit-him-for-now

US President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance posted on social media Tuesday, hinting at possible US involvement in the Israel‑Iran conflict.

Trump even implied violence against Iran’s leadership.

Vance praised Trump’s handling of the situation and blamed Iran for continuing its uranium enrichment.

He wrote, “The president has made clear that Iran cannot have uranium enrichment. And he said repeatedly that this would happen one of two ways – the easy way or the ‘other’ way.”

He added, “He may decide he needs to take further action to end Iranian enrichment. That decision ultimately belongs to the president.”

Less than an hour later, Trump, on Truth Social, escalated the rhetoric, apparently targeting Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.

“We know exactly where the so‑called ‘Supreme Leader’ is hiding,” he wrote.

“He is an easy target, but is safe there. We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now. But we don’t want missiles shot at civilians or American soldiers. Our patience is wearing thin.”

These messages arrive amid ongoing missile exchanges between Iran and Israel, raising concerns of broader American involvement and a possible regional war.

Despite mounting speculation, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a statement calling Israel’s strikes “unilateral” and clarified that “the US was not involved in the strikes against Iran.”

Meanwhile, the US has repositioned warships and aircraft in the region to “protect US forces,” according to Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Trump stated en route home from the G7 summit in Canada: “They should have done the deal. I told them: ‘Do the deal.’ So I don’t know. I’m not too much in the mood to negotiate.”

Abandoned nuclear talks and America’s new show of force intensify fear of US involvement. Critics warn Trump’s threats could drag the US deeper into conflict.

Representative Thomas Massie (R‑KY) and Representative Ro Khanna (D‑CA) introduced the Iran War Powers Resolution, requiring presidential approval before military action.

Senator Tim Kaine unveiled a similar measure to stop US hostilities towards Iran.

However, Trump stressed Iran’s nuclear red line, claiming he “has never wavered.”

Internal debate arose when DNI Tulsi Gabbard stated Iran was not building a weapon and Khamenei had not authorised it. Trump dismissed this, saying, “I don’t care what she said. I think they’re very close to having it.”

This clash between Trump’s rhetoric and the intelligence community’s findings raises questions.

“It’s just reprehensible and incredibly reckless that Trump is not even relying on guidance from his own intelligence,” commented Yasmine Taeb, legislative director at MPower Change Action Fund.

Jamal Abdi of the National Iranian American Council added, “If he’s not listening to his own intelligence community, who is he listening to? Is it Netanyahu?”

Who was Ali Shadmani? Iran’s Wartime Chief of Staff Reportedly Eliminated by Israel

who-was-ali-shadmani-irans-wartime-chief-of-staff-reportedly-eliminated-by-israel

Amid the ongoing Iran-Israel war, unfortunate news of casualties has been reported constantly. One of these was the assassination of the newly appointed Chief of Staff (COS) of Iran, Ali Shadmani.

The major general was appointed only four days ago after his predecessor, Commander-in-Chief Alaa Ali Rashid, who was also assassinated by Israel on June 13 during the start of Operation Rising Lion.

IDF wrote on X, “Ali Shadmani, Iran’s senior-most military official and Khamenei’s closest military advisor, was killed in an IAF strike in central Tehran, following precise intelligence.”

Iran’s Chief of Staff Assassinated By Israel

In a statement, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said it had killed Major General Shadmani in the heart of Tehran.

He was appointed by Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as Major General on June 13, following the death of Major General Gholam Ali Rashid in a previous Israeli attack. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei announced on his English-language X account that Shadmani would be taking Rashid’s place.

“In view of Lt. Gen. Gholamali Rashid’s martyrdom at the hands of the vile Zionist regime, and in light of Major General Ali Shadmani’s meritorious service and valuable experience, I confer the rank of Major Gen. & appoint him Commander of the Khatam al-Anbiya (pbuh) Central HQ,” Khamenei wrote in a post on X.

Seems like this didn’t last long and Israel Defence Forces (IDF) have stated that they had  killed Major General Shadmani in the heart of Tehran on June 17 2025. Despite Iran not issuing its own confirmation, multiple outlets reported Shadmani’s death at Israel’s hands.

Whether or not Tehran confirms the circumstances surrounding Shadmani’s death, the mere speculation is enough to signal a dramatic shift. Why? Because he was a central node in the military. Removing him is akin to cutting the head off a tactical network that spans across several conflict zones, especially during the Middle East shadow war.

idf-post-about-ali-shadmani
IDF post about Ali Shadmani

Who was Ali Shadmani? Iran’s Wartime Chief of Staff

Ali Shadmani held one of the most critical positions in Iran’s military infrastructure. These include the position of Deputy Commander of the IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) and the Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces during wartime.

It placed him at the helm of Iran’s wartime planning, strategy, and coordination across multiple fronts; from Tehran to proxy forces in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen.

While never as publicly visible as figures like Qassem Soleimani (the former Quds Force commander killed by a U.S. drone strike in 2020), Shadmani operated with strategic influence and authority.

In Iran’s military structure, he was the man trusted to execute critical decisions during times of high tension and war, especially when the country’s regional influence was at stake.

Even until the August of 2024, he made strong statements vowing “harsh revenge” over the assassination of Hamas’s Ismail Haniyeh and got sanctions imposed on his head by the European Union in October 2024.

How did Iran Become an Enemy of Israel?

To understand why someone like Ali Shadmani would be on Israel’s target list, you need to go back to the roots of Iran-Israel hostility.

Before the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Iran and Israel had diplomatic and even military ties. However, once the Islamic Republic was born after the Iranian revolution, everything changed.

No longer was the government a puppet to the Zionists, and Ayatollah Khomeini’s regime even denounced Israel as an “illegitimate Zionist state.” Israel couldn’t tolerate this, especially after Iran started supporting Hezbollah and Hamas.

impact-from-attack-by-israel
A drone photo shows the damage over residential homes at the impact site following missile attack from Iran on Israel, in Tel Aviv, Israel on June 16, 2025

This was further fueled, when Iran started it’s nuclear programme which the Israel couldn’t tolerate as this would threaten it’s nuclear supremacy in the region (no questions were asked on how Israel developed a Nuclear weapon in the first place). Since then both the nations have gone head to head with each other.

It’s a chilling reminder that in today’s geopolitical landscape, the real wars are often fought in the shadows, with far-reaching consequences.

As the world watches, the question now is what comes next? Whose throat is it this time? Hopefully not the supreme leader’s.

This Season, Bridal Couture is Ditching Pastels for Rich Colours and Drama

this-season-bridal-couture-is-ditching-pastels-for-rich-colours-and-drama

Gone are the days when Pakistani bridal couture was drowning in a sea of blush pinks and pastel hues. In 2025, it’s all about making a bold statement.

This season, brides are saying a soft “no, thank you” to pastels and leaning into richer tones that reflect tradition (about time). Oh, and Pakistani designers are leading this change.

Let’s talk shades and the bridal dresses redefining bridal couture in 2025.

Deep Maroon

There’s something eternally royal about maroon. But this year, it’s not the muted maroon of the past. It’s deeper, glossier and paired with intricate antique gold work in bridal couture.

Brands Championing this Shade:

  • HSY: His latest “Heirloom” collection features velvety maroon lehengas with heavy zardozi. The HSY Bridal Collection summons the pursuit of harmonious beauty to celebrate bridal femininity
  • Aisha Imran: The exquisite collection screams traditional maroon (dadi jaan approved).
  • Zainab Chottani: Think bridal regality, BUT with modern cuts. Maroon never looked this bold.

Dreamy Shades of Blue

Blue for brides? Yep, it’s happening. Blue with silver or rose-gold accents is the unexpected combo brides didn’t know they needed.

Designers Riding this Wave:

  • Sania Maskatiya: Her intricate threadwork over deep blue silks gives bridal couture a whole new vibe.
  • Ali Xeeshan: He plays with light and dark tones to create blue-based lehengas that dazzle.
  • Faiza Saqlain: Where elegance meets midnight drama.

Burnt Orange & Rust

Orange may have seemed too loud in the past, but now, with deeper undertones and textured embroidery, it’s becoming a favourite among bridal couture.

Designers Doing it Right:

  • Mohsin Naveed Ranjha (MNR): Again, a standout. His use of rust with emerald accents is creating buzz all over social media.
  • Nomi Ansari: With his love for colour, burnt orange becomes playful yet sophisticated.
  • Farah Tallib Aziz: You say range of rust orange, and I hear Farah Talib Aziz.

Deep Plum & Aubergine

These moody purples are having a real moment. Ideal for winter weddings and nikkah evenings, they offer an air of mystery with a royal twist.

Bridal Trendsetters:

  • Farah Talib Aziz: Usually pastel-heavy, FTA surprises with a deep plum collection paired with icy blues. Oh, and did I tell you, it’s affordable too.
  • Hussain Rehar: If drama is the bride’s middle name, Hussain Rehar’s aubergine pieces with structured cuts are the answer.
  • Zara Shahjahan: Her romantic aesthetic now includes deeper tones that work beautifully.

Black

Saving the best for the last. Yes, brides are wearing black now (our mom’s worst nightmare).

More brides are embracing black lehengas for their receptions or even barat days. Paired with gold, this look is fierce.

Designers are Making Black Bridalwear Iconic:

  • Ali Xeeshan: Of course, he’s the flag-bearer.
  • Zara Shahjahan: You think her purple bridal couture was exquisite, well, you just haven’t seen how good she is doing with the black articles.

Brides Don’t Play it Safe Anymore!

This bridal season in Pakistan isn’t about playing safe anymore; it’s about embracing your inner powerhouse. Rich hues not only photograph beautifully, but they also carry heritage, emotion and personality.

One thing’s for sure: Pastels had their moment. 2025 belongs to the bold.

So, which colour are you loving this season? And which designer do you think nailed the rich-hued bridal couture?

WhatsApp is Evolving: Getting Ads, Subscriptions, and More

whatsapp-is-evolving-getting-ads-subscriptions-and-more

Earlier this week, WhatsApp released updates that drew much controversy and discussion online. For years, the platform had upheld its promise of remaining ad-free, distinguishing it from other social media platforms, such as YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram.

However, the Meta-owned platform has introduced new features for its Updates tab, which houses Channels and Statuses (equivalent to Instagram stories).

In a new update, WhatsApp will now begin rolling out ads in Status updates. Furthermore, channel subscriptions have been introduced to allow users to receive paid and exclusive content.

Targeted advertisements will help users discover new channels while also helping admins increase visibility.

Will Personal Chats Remain Ad-Free?

The good news is that personal chats will still remain ad-free. Advertisements will exclusively appear in the App’s Updates tab, which is used by an estimated 1.5 billion people daily.

In their official blog post, WhatsApp stated:

“These new features will appear only on the Updates tab, away from your personal chats. This means if you only use WhatsApp to chat with friends and loved ones, there is no change to your experience at all.”

Keeping advertisers away from users’ personal data promises more security and greater privacy. The platform has reassured its clients that limited information will be extracted to personalise advertisements.

Languages, countries, and prior channel subscriptions will be used to suggest ads. End-to-end encryption of personal chats means that private messages cannot be used to tailor advertisements.

the-chatting-experience-remains-unchanged
The chatting experience remains unchanged.

Are Users Switching to Signal?

Although the latest updates are unlikely to affect those who use WhatsApp solely for messaging and calls, Meta‘s decision to include ads has upset many users, who are now contemplating switching to Signal.

Signal offers many of the same services as WhatsApp, including end-to-end encryption, voice calls, and group chats. However, the free messaging platform has the additional benefit of no advertisements.

Many see this monetisation strategy as a betrayal, but others believe it was inevitable. Most of Meta’s revenue comes from ads, with 160.6 billion US dollars earned from advertisements alone in 2025.

Including ads inside WhatsApp is likely to increase their revenue, which is the ultimate goal of every privately owned corporation.

Although the ad-free experience has been tainted, many users are indifferent to the Updates tab, and thus are least bothered by the latest changes. Furthermore, user privacy is still uncompromised, maintaining WhatsApp’s reputation as a secure platform.

Rashid Latif’s WTC Team of the Tournament: No Place for Pakistan

rashid-latif-wtc-team-of-the-tournament-no-place-for-pakistan

Former Pakistan skipper Rashid Latif has revealed his ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2023–25 Team of the Tournament, and if you were hoping to see a Pakistani name in there, tough luck. His XI, shared on X (formerly Twitter), has drawn attention not just for its star power, but also for what (and who) it leaves out.

Jaiswal, Khawaja open; Root stands tall

At the top of the order, India’s Yashasvi Jaiswal and Australia’s Usman Khawaja make the cut — both well-deserved.

Jaiswal was a revelation this cycle, scoring 1,798 runs at a stunning average of 52.88, including four centuries. Khawaja, ever the rock for Australia, wasn’t far behind with 1,428 runs at 39.66.

Batting at number three is England’s Joe Root, who was the standout batter of the entire cycle. The former captain smashed 1,968 runs at 54.66 — the highest of any player — with seven centuries to his name.

A Proteas-led middle order

Rashid Latif named a South Africa-heavy middle order, showing respect for their WTC-winning campaign. Temba Bavuma, fresh off ending his country’s 26-year ICC trophy drought, leads this side as captain.

Alongside him are England’s Harry Brook, who chipped in with 1,463 runs, and Sri Lanka’s Kamindu Mendis, whose average of 62.38 across 1,123 runs made him hard to ignore.

Behind the stumps, Kyle Verreynne takes the gloves. The South African keeper might have flown under the radar during the cycle, but Latif clearly sees his value.

A fearsome bowling attack

No World Test XI is complete without a potent bowling lineup, and this one’s stacked. Nathan Lyon leads the spin department with 66 wickets, reminding everyone why he’s still one of the best in the business.

The pace trio includes Matt Henry (48 wickets), Jasprit Bumrah (77 wickets), and Kagiso Rabada, who played a key role in South Africa’s final win, including nine crucial wickets.

Notably, Bumrah’s Player of the Series performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was a highlight of India’s campaign. His presence in this XI is a no-brainer.

A historic win for South Africa

Latif’s selection clearly tips the hat to South Africa’s historic WTC final victory over Australia at Lord’s. Chasing 282 in the fourth innings, it was Bavuma and Aiden Markram who stood tall, guiding their side to a win that ended decades of ICC heartbreak.

Their bowlers then blew away Australia’s resistance, sealing an unforgettable moment in cricket history. It’s no surprise that this achievement is reflected in Latif’s lineup — four Proteas players make the cut.

Pakistan — left out, but not unnoticed?

Still, it stings that no Pakistani player made the cut. With some decent performances scattered through the WTC cycle, fans may argue that at least one name deserved a mention. But in a brutally competitive field, sometimes even talent isn’t enough.

Rashid Latif’s team is a mix of consistency, match-winners, and title-winners. It’s bold, it’s balanced, and whether you agree with it or not, it’s got people talking.

Rashid Latif Team of the Tournament: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Usman Khawaja, Joe Root, Temba Bavuma (c), Harry Brook, Kamindu Mendis, Kyle Verreynne (wk), Nathan Lyon, Matt Henry, Kagiso Rabada, Jasprit Bumrah

Arshad Nadeem Eyes Glory in World Athletics Championship

arshad-nadeem-eyes-glory-in-world-athletics-championship
Drama does not only come up with such achievements but also how the story of Nadeem has enlightened people of the nation.

Fresh off a stunning gold at the Asian Athletics Championship and a spot on Forbes’ ‘30 Under 30’ list, Arshad Nadeem isn’t taking a breather. Instead, he’s locked in on his next goal — conquering the World Athletics Championship this September.

In a candid chat during his training at Punjab Stadium in Lahore, the javelin star looked fired up and focused.

“Whenever Pakistan’s name shines because of me, it fills me with joy,” he said, his words reflecting both humility and pride. “I always strive to win more medals and bring more honour to my country.”

Training with a purpose

Arshad Nadeem has already resumed intense training and plans to compete in two to three events before the World Championship.

He’s also gearing up for a training stint in England, where he’ll work on fine-tuning his technique and correcting the small mistakes he spotted during his Asian Championship performance.

“We are planning targeted sessions to overcome the flaws and raise my level even more,” Arshad explained. That level of dedication is exactly why he’s become a symbol of national pride.

From Paris gold to the Forbes list

If you somehow missed it, Arshad made history at the Paris Olympics, winning Pakistan’s first-ever individual Olympic gold medal with a jaw-dropping throw of 92.97 meters. That throw didn’t just earn him a medal; it turned him into a household name overnight.

And now, his impact goes beyond athletics. This week, he earned a spot on Forbes South Asia’s 2025 ‘30 Under 30’ list, a nod to his growing cultural significance in the region.

“It’s a proud moment for the whole nation,” he said of the honour. “Please keep me in your prayers so I can keep winning for Pakistan.”

The road ahead

The World Athletics Championship is the only major title missing from Arshad’s growing collection, and it’s clearly personal for him. His eyes are firmly set on September, and he’s building toward that moment — physically and mentally.

At just 28, he has already brought home five gold medals from major competitions and stood tall in the face of injuries, pressure, and expectations. But in typical Arshad Nadeem fashion, he isn’t settling. There’s always another summit to climb.

Is Israel Escalating Regional Instability?

is-israel-escalating-regional-instability

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan told Qatar’s Emir on Tuesday that Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu is “the greatest threat to the security of the region.” His office confirmed this in a statement. He also promised to continue efforts to stop the rising violence in the region.

Erdogan’s message was direct and clear. He said, “Netanyahu has shown once again that he is the biggest threat to the security of the region.” With this, Turkey strongly rejected Israel’s recent actions and criticised its leadership.

Moreover, during the same call, Erdogan expressed his commitment to restoring peace and stability in the Middle East. His office emphasised that Turkey wants to stop the violence through diplomacy. However, they did not share further details from the conversation.

At the same time, Russia strongly condemned Israel’s recent attacks on Iran. On Tuesday, the Russian Foreign Ministry called the Israeli strikes illegal. According to them, only diplomatic efforts can resolve the issue around Iran’s nuclear plans.

In its statement posted on Telegram, Russia highlighted Iran’s “clear statements” about following the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. Furthermore, Iran confirmed its willingness to hold talks with American officials.

Additionally, the Russian ministry urged the International Atomic Energy Agency to provide honest and clear reports. It asked the agency to offer “unvarnished” assessments of any damage caused by Israeli attacks on Iranian nuclear sites. This request shows Russia’s growing concern over rising tensions in the region.

Russia also showed strong support for Iran’s right to nuclear discussions and diplomatic solutions. Yet, it did not mention whether any meetings have been arranged. Meanwhile, Moscow pushed international bodies to step in and help lower the pressure.

So far, Israel has not responded to the accusations. With both Turkey and Russia criticising Israel’s actions, the regional situation has become more intense. Their stance raises concerns about the future of peace and stability in the Middle East.

In conclusion, Turkey and Russia’s statements reflect serious opposition to Israel’s behaviour. These developments could affect future diplomatic talks and peace efforts. As tensions build, more global responses are likely to follow.

ICC Considers Four-Day Test Matches For Smaller Nations

Pakistan Announced Test Squad for West Indies Series-ICC-Four-Day-Test-Matches

The ICC is brewing a shake-up in Test cricket. If reports are to be believed, four-day Test matches may soon become a regular feature — but only for lower-ranked nations during the 2027–29 World Test Championship (WTC) cycle. Meanwhile, the cricketing big guns — India, Australia, and England — will stick to the classic five-day format for their blockbuster series.

This potential change is being pitched as a practical fix, aimed at solving scheduling headaches and making the longer format more accessible for smaller cricketing boards.

The challenge

In the current WTC cycle (2025–27), 19 out of 27 series are limited to just two Tests. That’s hardly ideal for growing the format or giving teams meaningful series.

The ICC believes shorter Test matches could unlock room in the calendar for more frequent contests, especially for countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the West Indies.

During the WTC final at Lord’s, ICC Chair Jay Shah reportedly backed the idea, showing a clear push towards structural reform.

What changes?

Let’s be clear: the iconic five-match series aren’t going anywhere — at least not for the big three. The Ashes, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, and the newly-launched Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy will continue as five-day, five-Test blockbusters. These rivalries are simply too big to be trimmed.

However, for everyone else, four-day Tests could be the new normal. And this isn’t entirely new ground — England has already experimented with the format, including matches against Zimbabwe and Ireland in recent years.

What four-day Tests would look like?

To make up for the lost day, each day would feature 98 overs instead of 90. That means longer days for players and fans, but a full three-match series could be wrapped up in under three weeks — a massive win for both broadcasters and boards with tight budgets.

And let’s face it, many boards have been avoiding Test cricket altogether due to its financial burden and logistical demands. South Africa, despite winning a thrilling WTC final last week, isn’t even hosting a Boxing Day Test this year. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will play just four Tests in all of 2025.

This move could help countries like these get back into the Test rhythm without overloading their resources.

Is this the future of Test cricket?

There’s no denying the nostalgic charm of five-day battles. But for cricket to truly remain global, smaller nations need space to compete, and four-day Tests might just be that opening.

Shorter doesn’t always mean lesser. And who knows — in time, we might just fall in love with the four-day Test matches.

Is Attabad Lake Being Contaminated by Hotels?

The Gilgit-Baltistan administration fined a hotel near Attabad Lake Rs1.5 million after foreign tourist George Buckley posted a viral video.

In his Instagram clip, Buckley said, “Through a local, we discovered some information that the sewage is really being pumped into the water.” He also showed muddy water mixing into the lake.

The hotel denied the allegations in a social media post. It said, “This lake has been home for us for the previous six years. To dump sewage water into the lake would be like desecrating our own house. We have never nor will we ever dump a single litre of wastewater into Attabad Lake.”

According to the hotel, muddy water came from natural runoff, a phenomenon called confluence.

Buckley responded to their post and said, “The sole document you have provided to me and the public that looks into this environmental issue was the report from July 2021.”

He added, “I’ve asked 3 times to see an inspection report after that date conducted by the EPA and local government… yet you have provided nothing over the last 17 hours.” He also said the area “smelled badly of sewage,” and rejected the idea that natural runoff caused it.

Khadim Hussain, Director of the GB Environment Department, confirmed the fine. He said the administration acted on Buckley’s complaint and video. They sealed 30 hotel rooms where the sewage had entered the lake. After the video went viral, the GB chief secretary sent a 15-member team to inspect the site.

Hussain said, “We found evidence of water pollution when human waste from the hotel entered the lake.” He explained that the hotel was repairing its sewage line at the time, which caused the leak. He added, “The pollution wasn’t significant.”

The administration will prepare and send the report to the chief secretary.A magistrate’s court will handle the legal proceedings.

Local journalist Alamgir Hussain said residents had protested many times against the hotel. He said, “The legislation in this regard are also clear, but the administration is helpless before the hotel administration.” He believed action only came after a foreigner raised the issue.

Explosions Rock Tel Aviv and Tehran on the Sixth Day of War

explosions-rock-tel-aviv-and-tehran-in-sixth-day-of-war

Iran and Israel exchanged more missile strikes as their war entered its sixth day. On Wednesday morning, Israel said Iran fired two missile barrages, and explosions echoed over Tel Aviv.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed it used Fattah-1 hypersonic missiles in “the 11th wave of the proud Operation Honest Promise 3,” asserting full control over “the skies of the occupied territories.”

In response, Israel urged people in the Tehran area to evacuate before launching airstrikes on military sites. Additionally, Iranian outlets reported explosions in Tehran and Karaj. Moreover, Iran said Israeli cyberattacks hit digital systems and that authorities banned officials from using mobile phones.

According to five sources, Israeli strikes earlier in the week killed top military aides to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, thereby weakening his inner circle.

On Truth Social, US President Donald Trump demanded Iran’s “unconditional surrender.”

He wrote, “We now have complete and total control of the skies over Iran,” which raised doubts about US neutrality. Furthermore, he warned, We know exactly where the so-called ‘Supreme Leader’ is hiding … We are not going to take him out (kill!), at least not for now.”

Later, Trump met with his National Security Council for over an hour to explore military options. These include using 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs on Iran’s Fordow nuclear site, which Israeli bombs can’t destroy.

Additionally, The New York Times reported that Trump may allow US tanker planes to refuel Israeli jets, enabling them to carry out long-range attacks.

According to Reuters, the US has deployed F-16, F-22, and F-35 jets to defend Israel. These aircraft have already intercepted drones and missiles. In addition, AFP confirmed through satellite images that four B-52H bombers were present at Diego Garcia, a US base in the Indian Ocean.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the deployments are defensive. Currently, around 40,000 US troops remain in the region. Meanwhile, lawmakers Thomas Massie and Ro Khanna introduced a resolution to prevent the US entry into the conflict, stating, “This is not our war.”

At the G7 summit, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer added that the US was not about to join the war.

Furthermore, the IAEA confirmed that Israel hit underground enrichment halls at Natanz. Iran, a member of the NPT, insists its nuclear programme is peaceful. In contrast, Israel, which is not part of the treaty, neither confirms nor denies having nuclear weapons.

So far, the war has killed at least 224 Iranians and 24 Israelis, mostly civilians. As a result, many residents continue to flee. Haaretz reported that flotillas are forming at marinas in Herzliya, Haifa, and Ashkelon as people try to escape.

Additionally, strikes hit the South Pars gas field, which Iran shares with Qatar. This development alarmed global oil markets.

Counting the Crowd or Creating it? The GBO Debate around Love Guru

In Pakistan, and, in fact, much of South Asia, Eid is not only a time of celebration, but also a golden window for the film industry. For years now, Eid has marked the release of some of the biggest local productions, turning cinema-going into an Eid obligation. And, look, I’m not complaining as long as the films are great.

However, with families heading to theatres in large numbers, there is an unspoken pressure on the ones making these movies. Filmmakers, producers, and distributors see this time as a crucial moment to capture audiences and box office gold, and sometimes ethical marketing go out the window.

Naturally, with high stakes come high expectations. Marketing teams choose aggressive film promotions that often blur the line between what is true and what isn’t. Every new release wants to be the “Eid hit” of the season. This year’s line-up was no different.

As Eid al-Adha specials Love Guru and Deemak rolled out, crowds poured in, and bold claims of success quickly followed, each louder than the last.

But amid the excitement and competition, one can’t help but wonder: how much of what we see is marketing, and how much is measurable truth? In an era where reality can easily be overshadowed, navigating the space between promotion and authenticity becomes all the more important.

When Success Speaks for Itself: The Legend of Maula Jatt

Remember The Legend of Maula Jatt? The film that forced even the Pakistani cinema haters to praise it? It was easily one of the most defining moments in recent Pakistani cinema history.

Released in 2022, The Legend of Maula Jatt wasn’t just a film, it became a phenomenon, hailed not only for its cinematics and how utterly hot Fawad Khan looked, but also for how it reshaped expectations around local box office performance.

People who had lost faith in commercial Pakistani cinema became fans again; this was a revolution.

With a powerhouse cast, the film brought together remarkable chemistry between all the characters. But it wasn’t just the casting that captured attention; it was the film’s ability to deliver on both critical and commercial fronts.

In its opening weekend alone, Maula Jatt earned PKR 11.30 CR, an achievement that placed it firmly in the record books. (Data breakdown has been shared by distributors and verified by our team, but due to confidentially and privacy concerns it cannot be publicly shared).

Over the following weeks, its momentum only grew, ultimately making it the highest-grossing Pakistani film to date, with audiences turning up in impressive numbers both at home and overseas.

So… Did Love Guru Really Beat Maula Jatt?

This Eid al-Adha, one film that caught everyone’s attention was Love Guru, of course, because it featured Pakistan’s sweetheart couple, Mahira Khan and Humayun Saeed, but also for its quirky, light-hearted take that gave us major rom-com feels.

It set out to be a crowd-pleaser, and for some, it was. Audiences turned up, theatres saw a decent turnouts, and for a festive release, the mood was certainly upbeat. It had its laughs, some charm, a little bit of cringe (hints at Ramsha Khan’s Bado Badi scene), but overall a handful of moments that worked well with the holiday crowd.

love-guru-and-the-legend-of-maula-jatt
Love Guru and The Legend of Maula Jatt Weekend Box Office Collection

But then a bold claim began circulating on social media and multiple platforms: Love Guru had outperformed The Legend of Maula Jatt at the box office.

Now that’s quite the headline, isn’t it?

To its credit, Love Guru did draw in crowds. Eid releases usually do, and this one certainly had its share of chuckles and feel-good moments, but beating The Legend of Maula Jatt, even in its first week, was a bold claim. One that needed backing.

Unfortunately, no detailed breakdown of the box office numbers was provided by the distributors to verify the claims of the film earning PKR 12.8 CR in its first weekend. Without official data, the full picture remains a little fuzzy.

Of course, that doesn’t take away from the excitement or the experience of the movie, but it raises questions. How responsible is media journalism? Are we believing everything shown to us?

Beyond the Hype: Journalism’s Job isn’t Over

Today, before you know it, a tweet can become a headline, and a poster can pass for proof. Amid all this, the job of a journalist is trickier than ever, especially when it comes to box office numbers, where every film wants to wear the crown.

But here’s the thing: just because it’s trending doesn’t mean it’s true.

As journalists, we owe it to our readers (and even to the films) to report what’s real, not just what’s loud. That means waiting for verified numbers from distributors, relying only on official sources, and resisting the urge to turn every rumour into a headline. I know the last one can be the hardest.

Promotions will always add a little glitter—and that’s part of the fun. But when it comes to reporting success, we need to analyse what the truth is. Because once you throw unverified numbers into the mix, you’re not just covering cinema, you’re creating it.

And at the end of the day, cinema deserves celebration. But journalism? Well lets just say, it deserves truth to say the least.

Blue Whale Found Dead in Arabian Sea Near Pakistan-Iran Border

blue-whale-found-dead-in-arabian-sea-near-pakistan-iran-border

A 35-foot-long blue whale was found dead on Monday in the Arabian Sea, near Gwater Bay. This remote area lies between Pakistan and Iran.

The World Wide Fund for Nature–Pakistan (WWF–Pakistan) confirmed the discovery.

A local fisherman, Ahmad Baloch, spotted the whale floating near Kuntani, a coastal area in Balochistan.

Muhammad Moazzam Khan, WWF, Pakistan’s technical adviser, explained: “It is likely that the whale may have died a few days ago in the open sea between Pakistan and Iran and drifted towards Gwater Bay due to rough seas and strong currents.”

Cause of Death and Species Classification

The cause of death is unknown. However, Khan suggested the whale might have become entangled in gillnets. These nets are widely used in both coastal and offshore fishing in the region.

The blue whale, known scientifically as Balaenoptera musculus, is listed as endangered and is the largest animal ever known to exist.

Only three baleen whale species are reported in Pakistan’s waters: the blue whale, Bryde’s whale, and the Arabian humpback whale.

There are four subspecies of blue whales. Two are commonly found in the northern Indian Ocean: the pygmy blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus brevicauda) and the Indian Ocean blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus indica).

“Considering its small size, this dead blue whale sighted at Kuntani might be a pygmy blue whale,” Khan added.

Conservation and Legal Protection

Khan expressed concern about the whale’s death and emphasised the need for urgent action.

“Now all cetaceans, including whales and dolphins, are protected under the wildlife and fisheries legislation of Sindh and Balochistan. We also need to enact federal legislation for the protection of cetaceans, including whales, in Pakistan’s Exclusive Economic Zone.”

WWF–Pakistan noted that blue whales are distributed across the tropical and subtropical waters of the Indian Ocean. Moreover, there have been many sightings in Pakistan’s marine region.

The most recent sighting before this incident occurred near Gadani, Balochistan, on 8 April 2024.

netherlands-beat-nepal-after-historic-triple-super-over

The Netherlands defeated Nepal in a thrilling Twenty20 tri-series match in Glasgow on Monday after a historic triple Super Over, a first in T20 and limited-overs cricket history.

The Netherlands scored 152 for seven in their innings and looked likely to win.

However, Nepal’s Nandan Yadav hit a boundary on the final ball of the match. The team needed 16 from the last over, which tied the scores and forced a Super Over.

Nepal batted first in the Super Over and scored 19 runs.

The Netherlands managed to match that score, with Max O’Dowd hitting a six on the final delivery, leading to a second Super Over.

In the second Super Over, the Netherlands batted first and made 17 runs.

Nepal responded strongly once again, and Dipendra Singh Airee smashed a six on the final ball.  The scores were level again, marking the first time a third Super Over was needed.

The third Super Over didn’t carry the same intensity. Nepal failed to score any runs, and Michael Levitt hit a six on the first ball for the Netherlands to finally clinch the win.

This was the first-ever match in international T20 cricket to be decided after a historic triple Super Over, making it a historic encounter.

Next Fixtures in the Tri-Series

The Netherlands, which lost their opening match against Scotland earlier the same day, will now get a break on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Nepal will return to the field to play Scotland in their next game of the series.
