Source: Mint

In Pakistan, where the pulse of life beats fast and loud, the financial strain on households has become a pressing reality. A recent survey sheds light on the growing economic challenges faced by urban Pakistanis, revealing a stark picture of survival and adaptation in the face of rising inflation.

A 14% Increase in Financial Hardship

According to the survey, a staggering 74% of urban households in Pakistan are now unable to meet their expenses with their current income. This is a significant jump from 60% in May 2023, highlighting how inflation has tightened its grip on the everyday lives of city dwellers. The ripple effects of this economic strain are felt across the board, from grocery shopping to long-term financial planning.

Cutting Back, Borrowing, and Hustling

Faced with this financial squeeze, urban Pakistanis are deploying a range of survival strategies. About 60% of those who can’t make ends meet have resorted to cutting back on their expenses, with groceries being one of the first casualties. The once bountiful shopping trips have now turned into a careful selection of essentials, as families prioritize needs over wants.

Meanwhile, 40% have turned to borrowing money to cover the gap between their income and expenses. This borrowing often comes with its own set of challenges, as it can lead to a cycle of debt that is difficult to break free from. Yet, for many, it remains a necessary evil in the face of mounting financial pressures.

Here’s a report which was recently shared by Pulse Consultant

In a bid to stay afloat, approximately 10% of households have taken on additional part-time jobs. This side hustle culture is growing, with individuals juggling multiple roles to ensure their families can get by. From driving for ride-sharing services to freelance work, urban Pakistanis are tapping into every available resource to navigate these tough times.

The Reality of Income and Savings

Interestingly, the survey also found that 26% of households are managing to meet their expenses within their current income. However, more than half of these households reported that they are unable to save any money after covering their necessary expenses. This paints a picture of a population living on the edge, where even those who are managing today are unable to secure their future.

As inflation continues to rise, the financial challenges facing urban Pakistanis are becoming a defining feature of daily life. Yet, within this adversity, there is resilience. Households are adapting, finding new ways to cope, and holding on to hope that better days are ahead. The question remains: how long can they continue to survive the storm?

Why Has Pakistan Imposed a Rs 5000 Air Ticket Fee On Laborers?

Source: Business Recorder

In a move aimed at streamlining tax collection and improving regulatory oversight, the federal government of Pakistan has introduced a fixed excise duty of Rs. 5,000 on airline tickets for passengers traveling to Gulf countries on labor visas. This new policy, implemented by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), is a significant development for the thousands of Pakistani workers who migrate to Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries each year in search of better employment opportunities.

Eligibility Criteria for the Excise Duty

The excise duty, as outlined in the FBR’s notification, applies specifically to airline tickets for passengers whose labor visa is visibly printed on their passport. Additionally, these workers must have confirmation from the Protector of Immigrants, a division of the Bureau of Immigration and Overseas Employment, to qualify for travel under this category. This measure ensures that only verified workers, who have followed the necessary legal processes, are subject to the new excise duty.
https://www.brandsynario.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=330731&action=trash&_wpnonce=1f7cb4e249

This initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to enhance the documentation and verification processes for overseas workers. By imposing this fixed tax, the government aims to create a more transparent and accountable system for labor migration, ensuring that workers traveling abroad are properly documented and that their contributions are recognized in the formal economy. The revenue generated from this excise duty will likely be used to support further initiatives related to labor migration and worker welfare.

Impact on Pakistani Workers Traveling Abroad

For the workers, this additional Rs. 5,000 excise duty represents a new cost that must be factored into their travel expenses. While this may be seen as a financial burden, the government’s intent is to formalize the labor migration process and reduce the risks associated with undocumented or illegal migration. By ensuring that all workers are properly documented, the government can better protect their rights and provide them with necessary support services while they are employed abroad.

As Pakistan continues to rely heavily on remittances sent by its expatriate workforce, particularly from the Gulf region, this new policy underscores the importance of a well-regulated and transparent system for labor migration. The excise duty on Gulf labor visa tickets is a step toward achieving this goal, ensuring that both the workers and the nation benefit from these economic contributions.

Tanveer’s post read, “Gift for India team losing the ODI series – Gautam Gambhir.” He followed this up with another jab: “Next time india walon ko bolain gay achi team ley kar Ana,” which roughly translates to, “Next time, tell the Indians to bring a better team.”

Sri Lanka’s historic triumph was sealed with a commanding 110-run victory at the R Premadasa Stadium. The series ended with a 2-0 scoreline in favor of Sri Lanka. The first game ended in a tie, while the second saw Sri Lanka edge out India by 32 runs, thanks to a stellar performance by spinner Jeffrey Vandersay.

In the final match, Sri Lanka set a target of 249 runs. India’s response was lackluster, collapsing to just 138 runs in 26.1 overs. Sri Lankan spinner Dinuth Wellalage played a crucial role, claiming a brilliant five-wicket haul and dismantling the Indian batting lineup.

Saying Goodbye To Monal Restaurant: Things We’ll Miss

Image Source: Facebook/Monal Restaurant's Official Page

Whether you lived in Islamabad or visited every now and then, Monal Restaurant was always the first choice when deciding what to eat. Unfortunately, recent news dictates that as a result of Supreme Court orders, Monal is shutting down. However, Monal still remains the most popular spot in Islamabad due to the view, ambiance, and delicious food.

Here’s what they posted on their official page:

Monal was popular for many things, and they’ll be missed for sure. The drive up until Monal was scenic, beautiful, and peaceful. The restaurant had a comfortable ambiance and great food. Lastly, the overview of Islamabad from Monal was just stunning.

1. Food and Ambiance

This restaurant was the perfect stop. Be it for a family dinner on Sunday night, or a lunch with friends. The chilly air and the warm food went perfectly well. The restaurant also had friendly staff, that accommodated in whichever way possible.

2. Drive Till Monal Restaurant

Perhaps what people enjoyed most was the lengthy drive till Monal. Going in circles around a hill with a sweet spot like Monal as your destination was a dream for any outsider. Before dinner, the drive was the perfect opportunity to chat and unwind about your day. If you preferred, otherwise, the trees would have been a beautiful view.

3. Overview Of Islamabad

The selling point at the end of the day was always the view. Stunning at day and at night, Monal stood tall over the city.

All good things must come to an end, and in today’s case, it’s the beauty of Monal Restaurant. Back in June, The Supreme Court ordered the closure of all restaurants in the Margalla Hills National Park within the next 90 days. Given that no social activities can take place in the national park, hence the loss of Monal.

Uncertainty Looms: Will Shakib Al Hasan Feature in Pakistan Tests?

will-shakib-al-hasan-feature-in-pakistan-tests

As the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) prepares for the upcoming two-Test series against Pakistan, a cloud of uncertainty hangs over the participation of star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan.

With the first Test scheduled to begin on August 21 in Rawalpindi, fans and selectors alike are left wondering if Shakib will be able to join the squad in time.

A Rollercoaster Few Weeks for Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib Al Hasan, a cornerstone of Bangladesh cricket, has been on a whirlwind tour, featuring in various T20 leagues around the world, including the Global T20 Canada and Major League Cricket in the USA.

Initially, it seemed certain that Shakib would be part of the Test squad. He had secured a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the BCB, which was valid until August 12, signaling his intent to return home in time for the Test series.

However, recent developments have thrown a wrench into these plans. On August 6, Shakib lost his parliamentary seat amid ongoing political unrest in Bangladesh.

PCB-Bangladesh

This unexpected turn of events has delayed his return to the country, raising serious doubts about his availability for the crucial Test series against Pakistan.

Concerns Over Test Readiness

Another layer of complexity to Shakib’s situation is whether he’s physically prepared to switch gears from T20 cricket to the demanding Test format.

Since playing a home series against Zimbabwe in May, Shakib has been immersed in the fast-paced world of T20 cricket, which is quite different from the endurance required in Test matches.

An official from the BCB, speaking to The Daily Star, expressed these concerns, noting that while getting Shakib back to Bangladesh and then to Pakistan was a logistical challenge, there’s also a real worry about his readiness to handle the rigors of Test cricket after months of playing T20s.

will-shakib-al-hasan-feature-in-pakistan-tests

The situation has been further complicated by communication issues. Reports suggest that BCB selectors have struggled to get in touch with Shakib over the past week, likely due to the political unrest in Bangladesh.

With the Test series just around the corner, the selectors plan to consult with captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and head coach Chandika Hathurusingha before making any final decisions.

Cricket Operations In-charge Shahriar Nafees has stated that Shakib’s inclusion in the Test squad depends on two key factors: his availability and whether he is selected for the final 15-man squad.

As Bangladesh’s Test series against Pakistan draws nearer, the uncertainty surrounding Shakib Al Hasan’s participation continues to loom large. Fans and team management are anxiously waiting to see if their premier all-rounder will be ready to take the field in Rawalpindi, or if they’ll have to face Pakistan without one of their most experienced players.

From Mian Channu To Paris Olympics: Arshad Nadeem’s Javelin Saga

arshad-nadeem-from-mian-channu-to-paris-olympics

Arshad Nadeem is a javelin throw away from making history and ending Pakistan’s three-decade-long wait for an Olympic medal. Tonight, at the Paris Olympics 2024, the whole nation holds its breath as this young man from Mian Channu steps into the Stade de France for an electrifying showdown in the javelin throw final.

The final, set to begin at 11:25 pm Pakistan Standard Time (PST), is more than just a competition; it’s a culmination of years of dedication, resilience, and unyielding spirit.

Read More: Budapest’s Silver Star: Arshad Nadeem Makes Pakistan Proud

The Road to Final

Nadeem qualified for the final round of the javelin throw on Tuesday with an impressive 86.59-meter throw on his first attempt. This performance secured him fourth place in the qualifiers, while India’s Neeraj Chopra topped the charts with a massive 89.34-meter throw.

Despite the rivalry, there’s a camaraderie between Nadeem and Chopra. “I want to make Pakistan proud in the Olympic Games,” Nadeem told a local news channel. “I hope Neeraj Chopra and I will make our respective countries proud. Neeraj Chopra is a good friend, and we will focus on the final round,” he added.

Training and Challenges

The journey to this moment has been far from easy. Arshad Nadeem has trained under less-than-ideal conditions, with facilities that pale in comparison to those available to his international competitors.

A month ago, he was training at the Punjab Stadium in Lahore, a far cry from the grandeur of the Stade de France. The gym at Punjab University, where he often trains, is a relic of the seventies, with outdated and barely functional equipment. Yet, Nadeem has made peace with these conditions, turning adversity into motivation.

arshad-nadeem-from-mian-channu-to-paris-olympics-0

While his rivals, like Neeraj Chopra, spent their summers acclimatizing in Europe and competing in numerous warm-up events, Nadeem’s preparation was starkly different. The absence of world-class facilities in Pakistan could have been a setback, but it also fueled his determination.

This disparity highlights the broader systemic issues in Pakistani sports, where athletes often struggle for basic resources. In a country where cricket dominates the sports landscape, athletes in other disciplines often struggle for recognition and support.

Crowdfunding and Sponsorship Struggles

Nadeem’s challenges extend beyond training facilities. Prior to the Olympics, a journalist initiated a crowdfunding campaign to support him. While well-intentioned, such efforts underscore the systemic neglect of athletes in Pakistan.

Crowdfunding one javelin or providing temporary support cannot address the long-term needs of athletes. These short-term fixes divert attention from the necessary systemic changes required to support athletes consistently.

arshad-nadeem-from-mian-channu-to-paris-olympics-0

For much of his career, Nadeem trained with substandard equipment. Until March, he had only one international standard javelin, which was deteriorating. For two years, he used Nameth javelins but aspired for Nordic javelins, which are preferred in international competitions.

His reliance on locally made javelins had caused elbow injuries, further complicating his training. It wasn’t until he secured sponsorship before the Olympics that he finally obtained the equipment he needed.

A Beacon of Hope

Despite these obstacles, Arshad Nadeem remains a beacon of hope for Pakistan. His journey from Mian Channu to the Olympic stage is a testament to his unwavering dedication and resilience.

Tonight, as he competes in the final, he carries the hopes and prayers of an entire nation. The talisman he carries to every competition is “puri mulk ke duaien” (the prayers of the entire nation).

Arshad Nadeem’s story is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through perseverance and determination, even in the face of adversity. His presence at the Paris Olympics final is not just a personal triumph but a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes in Pakistan.

Baby In A Marlboro Ad: Can It Be True?

marlboro ads using baby photos

Back in the 1950s, cigarette advertising took some shocking and problematic turns. One of the most shocking examples is this – An authentic Marlboro ad that used the image of a baby to market cigarettes to women. Yes! you read that right. A baby!

These ads weren’t just isolated incidents. Several compilations of old tobacco advertisements feature a series of ads doing so. Using babies to appeal to women smokers.

One particularly infamous ad shows a photograph of a baby with a caption that reads, “Before you scold me, Mom…. Maybe you’d better light up a … cigarette.” Below the baby’s image, there’s a drawing of a woman enjoying a cigarette. The message was clear and startling. They showed that even the stress of motherhood could be alleviated by smoking. Which perhaps then was an excellent strategy, but currently is raising massive concerns. Such as why this was normalized.

Vintage Smoking Ads Use Motherhood and Baby Photos

The public’s reaction at the time wasn’t entirely positive, either. An anti-marijuana letter to the editor of the Arizona Republic in 1951 specifically referenced these ads. The writer argued that to tackle the spread of marijuana, society needed to address the tobacco smoking habit first. This was the first step for them. They pointed out the absurdity of marketing cigarettes with a baby’s image. Moreover, they discussed the potential harm of normalizing smoking. Especially around babies.

In September 2022, these old ads resurfaced. They confirmed yet again how cigarettes were marketed to women using the innocent imagery of a baby. This historical marketing strategy is surely bizarre. Given today’s standards. But it also sheds light on the lengths to which tobacco companies would go to sell their products.

Reflecting on these ads, it’s clear how far advertising standards have come.

Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Zahid has recently sung praises for Babar Azam, highlighting his superior technique among modern-day cricketers. Zahid believes that Babar’s technical prowess sets him apart from his peers.

“Babar Azam is the best skill-wise. He has the best technique among all the batters,” Zahid remarked, putting the Pakistani captain on a pedestal.

Babar Azam’s Game Awareness

Despite his admiration for Babar’s technique, Zahid pointed out that Joe Root and Steve Smith surpass Babar in terms of game awareness. “When it comes to performances and the knowledge of batting, Steve Smith and Joe Root are much better,” Zahid said.

Rough Patch for Babar Azam

Babar Azam’s recent form in international cricket has been less than stellar. His struggles with the bat have significantly impacted Pakistan’s performance across formats.

Despite leading the team in both the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup, Babar couldn’t deliver as a batter.

Unfortunately, Pakistan failed to reach the semi-finals in both tournaments and even suffered a surprising defeat to the United States in the T20 World Cup.

With Babar’s recent performance dip, his leadership style is now under the microscope. Fans and analysts alike are keen to see if the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will continue to back him as the skipper for ODIs and T20Is.

As the cricketing world watches closely, Babar Azam’s journey remains a focal point for many, and his ability to bounce back will be crucial for Pakistan’s future success.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has stepped up with a generous offer to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) amidst rising civil unrest in Bangladesh.

With the two-Test series between Pakistan and Bangladesh scheduled to kick off on August 21 in Rawalpindi, the PCB is eager to ensure the matches proceed as planned.

Political Unrest Raises Concerns

The political situation in Bangladesh has become increasingly unstable following the resignation and subsequent flight of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. This turmoil has cast doubt on the Bangladesh cricket team’s ability to travel to Pakistan for the series.

A source within the PCB, as reported by the Press Trust of India, mentioned that the PCB is prepared to host the Bangladeshi players in Rawalpindi ahead of the series, providing all necessary training facilities. However, the BCB has not yet responded to this offer.

Adding to the uncertainty, the BCB has delayed the departure of their A team to Pakistan by 48 hours. This delay raises further questions about the series between the senior men’s teams. Reports of attacks on the homes of some senior players have only added to the crisis.

Shakib Al Hasan Faces Backlash

In the midst of this political chaos, former cricket captain and current member of parliament, Shakib Al Hasan, is facing severe backlash from cricket fans for his silence. Shakib, currently in Canada for the GT20 league, was confronted by Bangladeshi fans chanting slogans against him.

The PCB source emphasized that the board is striving to maintain communication with the BCB, despite the current challenges. “With the BCB president (Najmul Hosain Papon) also leaving the country, the board is not functioning normally,” he added.

As the situation evolves, cricket fans on both sides of the border are eagerly awaiting a resolution that will allow the series to proceed without further disruptions.

Two Uncapped Players, New Vice-Captain Named In Pakistan Squad Test

pakistan-name-test-squad-for-bangladesh

Pakistan has made some bold choices in announcing a 17-member squad for the upcoming two-match home Test series against Bangladesh, starting on August 21. The first Test will be at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium from August 21-25, and the second Test will take place from August 30-September 3 in Karachi.

Key Changes and Strategic Decisions

Shan Masood continues as the Test team captain, with left-handed middle-order batter Saud Shakeel stepping in as the new vice-captain. Saud replaced Pakistan’s leading fast bowler Shaheen Afridi as the vice-captain.

This change aims to manage the workload of Shaheen Afridi, amid a busy season. The Pakistan cricket team is set to play nine Tests, 14 T20Is, and at least 17 ODIs from August 21, 2024, to April 5, 2025. Managing Shaheen’s workload is crucial to keeping him injury-free.

Pakistan’s squad for the Bangladesh series includes 13 players from the last series against Australia. Uncapped Mohammad Huraira and Kamran Ghulam, along with Test player Mohammad Ali, have been rewarded for their consistent performances in domestic cricket and for Pakistan Shaheens.

Pace sensation Naseem Shah also set to return to the red-ball side after a 13-month break. He last played a Test just over a year ago, starring with six wickets in an innings triumph in Colombo. But a shoulder injury in the Asia Cup soon after meant he missed the ODI World Cup in India and the tour to Australia.

Rising Stars and Consistent Performers

Kamran Ghulam scored 1,025 runs in 11 first-class matches in the 2023-24 season and then added 148 runs in three innings against Bangladesh ‘A’ in Darwin last month, including an unbeaten 100 in the first match.

Fast bowler Mohammad Ali returns after his last appearance in the opening two Tests against England in 2022. He took 24 wickets in six first-class matches in the 2022-23 season, followed by 47 wickets in 14 matches in the 2023-24 season.

Mohammad Huraira shone with a double-century against Bangladesh ‘A’ in Darwin last month and had impressive first-class seasons. In the 2022-23 Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, he was the only batter to score over 1,000 runs, with 1,024 runs in 11 matches. In the 2023-24 season, the 22-year-old right-hander scored 961 runs in 14 matches.

Imam-ul-Haq

Notable Omissions

Imam-ul-Haq, Faheem Ashraf, Hasan Ali (injured), Mohammad Nawaz, Mohammad Wasim Jnr (injured), Noman Ali, and Sajid Khan did not retain their places in the Test side.

Imam managed 57 runs in two Tests against Sri Lanka and 94 runs in the Perth and Melbourne Tests. Faheem took one wicket in the Perth Test, Sajid claimed three wickets in the Sydney Test, while Nawaz and Noman did not play in any Tests.
