Met Office Predicts Rain, Snowfall in Various Parts of the Country

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain and snowfall in various regions of the country from Nov 28 to Dec 2.

According to the Met Department, the incoming weather system will improve air quality in parts of the country but could also exacerbate fog, especially in the plains of Punjab.

Affected Regions and Weather Predictions

Rain and thunderstorms are forecast for several areas of Balochistan, including Quetta, Pishin, Qila Saifullah, Barkhan, Loralai, and Dera Ghazi Khan. The coastal regions, such as Gwadar, Kech, and Panjgur, are also likely to experience rainfall, with snowfall expected in the nearby mountains. The weather will persist in Balochistan until December 2.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rain is expected in various districts, including Kurram, Mohmand, Peshawar, Mardan, Kohat, Malakand, Hazara, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan. Additionally, snowfall is likely in the mountainous regions of Swat, Dir, and Kohistan from tonight until Monday.

Impact on Air Quality and Fog

Islamabad’s air quality index is currently “unhealthy,” according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), with an AQI of 170. However, the rain brought by the new weather system is expected to help improve air quality, especially in Punjab, by reducing air pollution levels.

However, it is also possible that the system may intensify the fog in Punjab’s plains. Travel may be impacted and visibility may be reduced as a result, especially in the days ahead.

Precautionary Measures and Alerts

District administrations are being advised to ensure preparedness by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), which has issued alerts for the affected areas. Authorities have been directed to warn the public about the weather system’s possible hazards and to have emergency equipment on hand. During the downpour, the public is advised to stay away from locations close to billboards, abandoned buildings and electricity wires.

Travel Advisory for Tourists

Authorities are also advising tourists visiting mountainous regions to stay updated on weather conditions, particularly regarding snowfall. They are encouraged to be cautious when travelling through affected areas due to the expected harsh weather conditions.

As the weather system brings rain and snowfall across several regions of Pakistan, it’s pertinent for everyone to stay informed and take the necessary precautions.

WhatsApp Ditches ‘Typing’ Indicator for Animated Bubble

Source; verge

Whatsapp made some changes! The recent addition is they have replaced the “typing” indicator with an animated chat bubble. Most of its users feel quite frustrated with the new system. It features a three-dot bouncing animation below the latest message and has been labelled unnecessary and anxiety-inducing.

Read More: Microsoft Denies Training AI Models on User Data

What Changed?

Earlier, WhatsApp displayed a simple “typing” notification underneath the name of the person typing, which was static and subtle. Indicating that the other person was composing a message. The new feature introduces an animated bubble, similar to Apple’s iMessage, to indicate when someone is typing. While this change might seem minor, it has become a hot topic of debate online.

WhatsApp has made a subtle change that has left users FURIOUS - as one claims it seems 'purposely designed to give me anxiety' | Daily Mail Online

Many users claim the animation is annoying and puts pressure on conversations. Complaints have been coming in thick and fast on social media platforms like X, formerly Twitter. One user complained that “WhatsApp now has the three dots typing thing like iMessage, and I HATE it,” while another described it as, “purposely anxiety-inducing.”

Some have even suggested that the change disrupts the simplicity WhatsApp is known for, turning it into an unnecessarily flashy platform. Critics argue that while iMessage users may appreciate such features, WhatsApp’s wide user base—spanning casual users and professionals—values its straightforward design.

Lack of Communication

Adding to this frustration is that WhatsApp seems not to have given prior notice to the users about this update. Many feel surprised by this sudden rollout and are now asking for the option of reverting to the old indicator.

Perhaps, this latest move was an attempt from WhatsApp to modernise its interface as against its competitors, like iMessage. However, the backlash suggests that tweaks in design need to resonate with users’ expectations, especially on a platform relied upon for both casual and critical communications.

What’s Next?

Although the feature is expected to go live for all users very soon, the negative reactions may make WhatsApp rethink its idea. Users are asking for a toggle option to switch between the animated bubble and the previous “typing.” indicator, allowing the user to customise the experience according to their preference.

This incident highlights the thin line between innovation and alienating their user base that tech companies must tread. For WhatsApp, which portrays a minimalist appeal, listening to its community will mark an important milestone in keeping users at bay.

Huawei Launches Mate 70 Smartphone With Own Operating System

Source: Verge

The series, Mate 70 smartphone from Huawei, is a huge step in its comeback journey to the premium smartphone market and a shift away from US technology. This all comes at a time when the United States is looking to impose stricter export controls potentially blacklisting up to 200 Chinese chip firms.

A Bold Step Towards Independence

The Mate 70, starting at 5,499 yuan ($758), is powered by Huawei’s HarmonyOS NEXT operating system, a complete departure from Android. This move underscores Huawei’s efforts to reduce reliance on U.S. technology since sanctions cut off access to Google services in 2019. Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei’s consumer business group, described it as “the most powerful Mate phone ever.”

Source: Hum News English

For the first time, users will have a choice between HarmonyOS NEXT 5.0 and HarmonyOS 4.3, which still supports Android compatibility. This strategy shows that Huawei is ready to embrace full software independence while still having a transitional option for users. Next year, all new Huawei devices will run on HarmonyOS NEXT.

Cutting-Edge Features

The Mate 70 has some innovations, such as:

  • Satellite Paging System: First for mainstream smartphones, which ensures connectivity in remote areas.
  • Improved Performance: Up by 40% in efficiency with Kirin 9100 chipset, developed in collaboration with SMIC.
  • HarmonyOS Ecosystem Expanded: Over 15,000 applications on the platform that will look to reach over 100,000 apps shortly.

Competitive Advantage in a Challenging Market

The technological advancements by Huawei have breathed life into its market position. In Q3 2024, it ranked as the second-largest smartphone vendor in China, shipping over 10 million units, having leapt from its struggles in 2022. Competitive pricing of the Mate 70, below Apple’s iPhone 16 base model, makes it a serious contender in the world’s largest smartphone market.

Dealing with U.S. Sanctions

The joint effort of Huawei and SMIC showcases China’s increasing chip-making prowess, despite U.S. sanctions that seek to cripple its semiconductor supply. Still, production issues may prevent high-end models from receiving advanced Kirin chips.

As Huawei pushes forward in its technology self-reliance drive, the Mate 70 series not only embodies a patriotic sentiment but also a strategic pivot into the top echelons of China’s smartphone industry while indicating a bigger challenge to global tech domination.

Microsoft Denies Training AI Models on User Data

Microsoft denies training AI models on user data
Source: Reuters

The tech company has denied using customer data from its applications, such as Microsoft 365 for Word and Excel, in training AI models. The “connected experiences” feature, generated plenty of chatter online with people speculating over potential data misuse. Microsoft responded by asserting its commitment to data privacy and describing the claims as baseless.

What Triggered the Controversy?

The controversy begins with a privacy setting in Microsoft Office labelled with “optional connected experiences.” This feature supports functions such as online image searches and cloud-based information retrieval. Although enabled by default, the documentation about the feature does not refer to AI training, which was speculated.

Adding to the ambiguity was a Microsoft learning document issued in October 2024 describing the connected experiences that “analyse your content.” Analysts hypothesised that “an analysis” might indeed pertain to training the Large Language Models (LLMs), but no apparent linkage was mentioned.

Microsoft’s Response

In an official statement to Reuters, Microsoft categorically denied this claim. A spokesperson clarified, “Microsoft does not use customer data from Microsoft 365 consumer and commercial applications to train foundational large language models.” They further explained that connected experiences only facilitate features like co-authoring and cloud storage that are unrelated to AI training.

Frank Shaw, the Head of Communications at Microsoft expressed: “In the M365 apps, we do not utilise customer data to train LLMs.” He reiterated it when explaining that the application features internet-dependent functionalities. While connecting the feature to create an understanding on how such things are not necessarily done as part of artificial training methods.

Implication towards the Users

The incident marks the challenges that tech firms face in addressing privacy concerns in this age of AI. It is a wake-up call for users who are becoming very vigilant about how their data is handled, especially with the AI-powered tools coming online. While Microsoft has unequivocally denied the charges, the controversy underscores the importance of transparent communication in data usage and AI development practices.

This case reminds us that even accidental ambiguities in policy documents can lead to public scepticism. Companies like Microsoft need not only robust privacy protections but also clear, proactive messaging to dispel misconceptions.

“Inflation will Fall to 5.8%-6.8% in November,” Ministry Says

Inflation to Fall to 5.8%-6.8% in November, Ministry Says
Inflation to Fall to 5.8%-6.8% in November, Ministry Says

00On Wednesday, the Government reported that Pakistan’s economic performance during the current fiscal year remained lower than expected and inflation is expected to recede further to around 6% in November.

Despite this positive news, the industrial sector, particularly large-scale manufacturing (LSM) continues to face significant challenges. The finance ministry’s monthly inflation outlook demonstrated that LSM remains under pressure. The growth in this sector still remains negative.

Inflation Outlook

Inflation is expected to remain within a range of 5.8% to 6.8% in November and could fall further to 5.6% to 6.5% by December. The disruption of supply chains brought on by the closure of highways and motorways may have an impact on prices in the early days of December. However, the government’s inflation forecasts for December were made before this. The slowdown in inflation can be attributed to factors like a high base effect from the previous year and improved food supply conditions. According to the Finance Ministry, last month’s inflation rate was 7.2%, mostly a result of a sizeable drop in the cost of goods like petrol, water and housing as well as perishable food.

Inflation to Fall to 5.8%-6.8% in November, Ministry Says
Inflation to Fall to 5.8%-6.8% in November, Ministry Says

Interest Rates and Economic Policy

In response to the faster decline in inflation than was expected, the Central Bank cut its policy rate by 2.5 percentage points, reducing it to 15% this month. This decision attempts to stimulate economic activity while inflation is within the central bank’s medium-term target range. Stable global oil prices and favourable gas tariffs have also supported the easing of inflationary pressures. These factors, along with the ongoing fiscal consolidation efforts, are expected to provide support to the economy in the coming months.

Economic Growth Target

The government has set an inflation target of 12% and an economic growth target of 3.6% for the fiscal year. Although political instability and the implementation of policies under the International Monetary Fund (IMF) package are expected to slow down economic activity, the government’s report points to several positive developments. Remittances and IT exports have shown significant increases, while the external and fiscal sectors have remained stable. The economic recovery, which is predicted to continue in all sectors, will also be supported by the interest rate decline, which will help the economy reach its growth goals in the months to come.

Challenges in Large-Scale Manufacturing in the Industrial Sector

The finance ministry stated that LSM-related indicators presented “a sector striving to recover”. There is proof of endurance, particularly in important industries like textiles and automobiles, where production is gradually increasing, even though the annual growth in LSM is still negative. Additionally, this slow recovery in industrial output is seen as crucial for overall economic growth. Without a sustained improvement in LSM, the economy’s broader recovery could face setbacks.

Positive Developments in Agriculture

On the agricultural side, the government is working to ensure that wheat sowing reaches its targeted area and production levels. The timely provision of key agricultural inputs to farmers at reasonable prices is a priority, and there have been notable developments in this area. “Input situation is encouraging,” said the ministry. Moreover, imports of agricultural machinery have increased by 70.9%, reaching $39.6 million, and the off-take of di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) fertilizer has surged by 92% for the 2024-25 season. These developments reflect the government’s support for farmers, especially with the disbursement of interest-free loans for the purchase of inputs such as seeds and fertilizers.

Tax Revenue and External Trade

Despite the positive performance in agriculture and exports, the slowdown in LSM is impacting the Federal Board of Revenue’s ability to meet its tax targets. Weak enforcement measures are also contributing to this shortfall. On the trade front, however, the outlook for exports, imports, and remittances remains strong. Exports are expected to range between $2.5 billion and $3 billion, while imports may stay between $4.5 billion and $4.9 billion. Remittances are projected to be in the range of $2.8 billion to $3.3 billion for November. These trends in exports and remittances are providing some relief to the government and helping to improve the external account position, despite rising imports. Notably, the current account recorded a surplus of $218 million during the first four months of FY25, a stark contrast to the deficit seen during the same period last year.

Pakistan’s economy is showing signs of recovery, with inflation declining and key sectors such as agriculture and IT exports performing well. However, challenges remain, particularly in large-scale manufacturing, and political instability could affect future economic growth. Despite these challenges, the overall economic outlook remains cautiously optimistic, with sustained recovery expected to continue across various sectors in the coming months.

The Pakistan men’s selection committee is gearing up to announce the squad for the tour of South Africa and left-handed opener Fakhar Zaman, along with other senior players, is likely to make a much-anticipated return to the team.

With a packed schedule featuring T20Is, ODIs, and Tests, the tour promises to test Pakistan across formats. Here’s everything you need to know about what’s brewing in the Pakistan camp ahead of this crucial series.

Fakhar Zaman: The Team’s Necessity

Fakhar Zaman is set to be a key figure, particularly in the ODIs. Sources reveal that his inclusion isn’t just about current form—it’s a strategic move with the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in mind. Unlike other senior players who might sit out the T20I series, Fakhar’s versatility and experience make him indispensable for both white-ball formats.

His return couldn’t come at a better time. After missing recent series, Fakhar’s presence at the top of the order will be crucial for Pakistan’s balance and firepower.

Young Guns to Shine in T20Is

The T20I series, starting December 10, is likely to feature a mix of young talent and bench strength. The team management plans to give emerging players a chance to prove their mettle while resting senior batters and bowlers.

It’s a bold move that could pay dividends in the long run. After all, tournaments like these are where future stars are born.

Full Strength for ODIs

Pakistan means business when it comes to ODIs. The likes of Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah, and Fakhar Zaman are expected to make the squad for the three-match series. With the ICC World Cup behind us, this series offers a fresh opportunity for Pakistan to build momentum in the 50-over format.

One of the more intriguing developments is the potential return of Imam-ul-Haq for the Test series. The left-handed opener hasn’t played for Pakistan since December 2023, but his name is back in the mix for the red-ball assignments.

In preparation for the two-match Test series, Pakistan plans to hold an exclusive training camp in South Africa. The camp, lasting 7–10 days, will focus on acclimatizing Test players to South African conditions. Meanwhile, all-format players will already have some familiarity with the pitches, having played the white-ball games earlier.

Indian Legend Compares Virat Kohli To Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal

Virat Kohli Joins the 100 Club: A T20 Legacy that Keeps Growing
Virat Kohli Joins the 100 Club: A T20 Legacy that Keeps Growing

Virat Kohli is back, and he’s back with a bang! A sensational century in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 has silenced critics—at least for now. But let’s be honest, Kohli has never been just a cricketer; he’s a phenomenon.

And with that status comes an unreal level of scrutiny. When Kohli scores a hundred, it’s business as usual. But when he doesn’t? Oh boy, the knives are out.

The Djokovic-Federer-Nadal Comparison

Recently, cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar offered an interesting perspective on Kohli’s journey. He compared Kohli to tennis icons Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, and Rafael Nadal.

You know how it goes with those three. If they don’t win a Grand Slam, people say they’re out of form—even if they make it to the semi-finals. Gavaskar pointed out that Kohli faces the same expectations. Scores of 70 or 80, which would make most players ecstatic, are seen as failures for Kohli.

gavaskar-compares-virat-kohli-to-novak-djokovic-rafael-nadal

“We are used to him scoring hundreds in international cricket, and when he doesn’t, people say he’s out of form,” Gavaskar explained.

It’s a double-edged sword. The very consistency that made Kohli a modern-day great now works against him when he falls short of his own sky-high standards.

From Criticism to Comeback

Let’s rewind a bit. Kohli wasn’t exactly at his best during the previous Test series against New Zealand. He managed just 93 runs in six innings. The chatter around his place in the Test team grew louder, with whispers that his spot could be in jeopardy if he didn’t deliver in Australia.

But here’s the thing about Virat Kohli — he thrives under pressure. With the world watching, he walked into the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and delivered a masterclass, silencing the critics in the most Kohli-like way possible.

This isn’t just about Kohli’s form; it’s about the price of being a legend. When you’re as good as Kohli, people stop comparing you to others and start comparing you to your own peak. That’s why a 70 or 80 from Kohli feels like a letdown to fans who’ve grown accustomed to seeing him churn out centuries like a well-oiled machine.

And this isn’t limited to cricket. As Gavaskar pointed out, Djokovic, Federer, and Nadal face similar criticism. When you’re at the top, even the smallest dip looks like a free fall.

Glenn Maxwell Reveals His Pick for ‘Greatest Fast Bowler of All Time’

Is Jasprit Bumrah the best fast bowler of all time? According to Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, the answer might be a resounding yes. Speaking on The Grade Cricketer podcast, Maxwell showered praise on Bumrah following his breathtaking performance in the first Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at the Optus Stadium, Perth.

A Generational Talent at His Peak

Maxwell didn’t hold back, calling Bumrah “potentially the best fast bowler of all time.” Now, that’s a bold statement! But anyone who watched Bumrah’s heroics in Perth would agree he’s something special.

Taking 8 wickets for just 72 runs across two innings, Bumrah left Australia’s batters scratching their heads. Whether it was his fiery 5/30 in the first innings or his sharp 3/42 in the second, Bumrah proved why he’s a complete package.

Maxwell summed it up perfectly, “He’s got such a unique action, unique ability with the ball to get it to move and rush you. He can beat you on the outside edge, inside edge, and he’s got a quick sniff slower ball. He seems like the complete package.”

Leading by Example

What makes this performance even more impressive is that Jasprit Bumrah wasn’t just the spearhead of the bowling attack—he was also captaining the team. Stepping in for Rohit Sharma, Bumrah showcased his leadership skills, guiding India to a massive 295-run victory.

In doing so, he became only the second Asian captain to win a Test in Perth, after the legendary Anil Kumble.

And if that wasn’t enough, he also leapfrogged Ravichandran Ashwin to become India’s third-highest wicket-taker in Australia. Bumrah now has 41 wickets Down Under, trailing only Kapil Dev (51) and Anil Kumble (49).

Elephant Madhubala Reunites With Her Family After 15 Years

FOUR PAWS, a global animal welfare organisation, successfully transported African elephant Madhubala from her substandard living conditions at Karachi Zoo to a newly designed, species-appropriate habitat at the Karachi Safari Park. After more than 15 years apart, Madhubala’s reunion with her siblings Malika and Sonia represents a huge emotional turning point in her life.

“Madhubala’s rehoming into a species-appropriate enclosure is a gigantic step for more animal welfare in Pakistan and sends a strong signal to other countries around the world where elephants are still kept in private captivity for entertainment purposes,” says FOUR PAWS CEO and President Josef Pfabigan.

The Carefully Planned Relocation Process

Madhubala’s relocation was carefully organised to reduce her anxiety, guarantee her safety, and ensure the relocation went smoothly. Dr Frank Göritz of the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (IZW) put the elephant under sedation to relax her before she was relocated. Madhubala was then lifted into a vehicle by the relocation crew, comprising of skilled FOUR PAWS specialists. To get to the Safari Park, the convoy travelled through Karachi’s busy streets with the help of FOUR PAWS employees and police.

“The efforts of all the involved stakeholders were tremendous. Especially the close alignment with the mayor of Karachi and KMC, Murtaza Wahab, fast-tracked the developments of Madhubala’s relocation. To finally see her thriving in her new species-appropriate enclosure exceeds our expectations. It is one of the main pillars of the work of FOUR PAWS to make sure we find sustainable long-term solutions to improve the lives of as many animals as possible together with our local stakeholders and global network,” says Pfabigan.

The health condition of the three elephants will be closely observed by the head veterinarian Dr Göritz, who has been involved in the treatment of the elephants since 2021. Furthermore, the upkeep and satisfaction of the elephants’ species-appropriate living conditions will be overseen by an independent task team in the future. To get ready for Madhubala’s move, Karachi Safari Park’s designated 5.2-acre sanctuary area underwent significant renovations.

Digitally Connected and Socially Isolated-Youth of Pakistan

Source: Arab News

In an era where social media binds people across continents, Pakistan’s youth finds itself paradoxically adrift — digitally connected yet emotionally distant. While platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram bridge distant worlds, they increasingly sever the ties that hold families together, profoundly reshaping the country’s social fabric.

A study from the International Islamic University Islamabad reveals startling realities: 94% of the youth admitted that excessive use of social networking sites (SNS) negatively affects family relations. Nearly 71% reported feeling emotionally isolated from their families due to prolonged screen time. These statistics highlight a concerning trend-the more connected our devices make us, the more isolated we become from those closest to us.

A Shift in Priorities

Undeniably, social media pervades Pakistan. More than 30 million people are online every day and 9 million Facebook active users. The lure of quick connections often replaces the world. It was observed that 80% of respondents spent more time talking to their online friends than they spent talking to their families. Many of the dinner tables in homes have turned into battlegrounds for meaningful conversation against the addictive glow of the smartphone screen.

This change can be witnessed in entertainment behaviours as well. Although 88% of the young generation agreed they “sometimes” talk with family, only 8.6% always made it a point to do so. Contrarily, 80.6% admitted that they spent their free time browsing SNS. The outcome is a generation less emotionally attached to their families, deprived of the invaluable warmth of human touch.

The Psychological Consequences

The emotional consequences of excessive social media usage are staggering. More than 69% of young people reported increased loneliness, while 88.6% acknowledged feeling emotional disturbances related to their screen use. These numbers paint a bleak picture of a generation yearning for genuine connection but trapped in the shallowness of likes, shares, and retweets.

This growing reliance on digital media also impacts personal growth. Most respondents admitted to not being productive, distracted, and disengaged from school and other real-world affairs. Over 61% of respondents admitted to relying too much on electronic mediums; the boundary between online and offline life is still dissolving.

The Erosion of Cultural Values

Pakistan’s rich traditions of familial bonding and collective celebrations are being eroded by the relentless intrusion of social media. Family gatherings, once a cornerstone of Pakistani culture, are now interrupted by buzzing notifications. Parents, often unfamiliar with their children’s digital lives, struggle to bridge the growing generational gap. In fact, over 71% of respondents admitted to being “least concerned” with family matters, a sobering testament to the erosion of traditional values.

Finding the Balance

The digital age is here to stay. However, its consequences deserve attention. Parents and teachers need to create digital literacy and encourage responsible use of technology. By setting boundaries, encouraging face-to-face communication, and nurturing hobbies off the computer, we can help the youth regain emotional balance.

Ultimately, reconnecting with family doesn’t require abandoning technology but learning to coexist with it. The power to reverse this cycle lies in realising that while the internet can connect us to the world, it is the bonds we nurture offline that truly define who we are.
