Cricket fans around the globe are holding their breath as the Champions Trophy 2025 faces uncertainty. At the center of this storm are two cricketing powerhousesโIndia and Pakistan. But this time, itโs not about the on-field rivalry; itโs about who gets to host, where, and under what conditions.
The Hybrid Model Debate
It started with a proposal. India suggested a hybrid model, offering to play their matches in the UAE rather than stepping foot in Pakistan, citing security concerns. To sweeten the deal, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reportedly offered a hefty compensation package to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

But Pakistan wasnโt biting. The PCB stood firm, rejecting the offer and insisting the entire tournament should be hosted on home soil.
Pakistan isnโt backing down easily. Theyโve even written to the International Cricket Council (ICC), requesting clarity on the situation. So far, no formal response has come from the ICC, leaving everyone in limbo.
PCBโs position? Indiaโs matches should be played in Lahore, including the knockout stages if they qualify. And if the ICC considers moving matches to Dubai, the PCB is ready to dig in its heels, even proposing a โminus-Indiaโ Champions Trophy if needed.

To strengthen their case, the PCB is pointing to history. In the 1996 World Cup, Australia and the West Indies refused to play in Sri Lanka. Similarly, in 2003, New Zealand refused to play in Kenya, and England declined to play in Zimbabwe.
In these instances, the ICC didnโt alter the venues; instead, points were awarded to the teams that showed up. The PCB is asking for the same consistency. If India refuses to travel, why should the hosting rights or venue arrangements change?
But this isnโt just about cricket logistics. Itโs about politics, pride, and, letโs face it, money. Broadcasters are anxiously waiting for a decision because a tournament without an India-Pakistan clash is like a blockbuster movie without its star cast.

And then thereโs the question of what happens if the ICC caves to Indiaโs demands. According to reports, Pakistanโs government might escalate matters, considering a complete boycott of future matches with India until relations improve.
Itโs not just the PCB thatโs frustrated. Many in Pakistan feel their goodwill gesturesโlike touring India for ICC eventsโare met with resistance and political maneuvering on the other side.
