Pakistan Launches National Tagging System to Track Convicted Sex Offenders

National tagging system

Pakistan has implemented a national tagging system to track convicted sex offenders in a ground-breaking effort to tackle increasing sexual crimes. NADRA built the system, which connects local prosecution offices across the country. It also gives authorities tools for tracking offenders’ movements after they are released.

“The system is designed to ensure all details of convicted offenders are immediately accessible to relevant authorities,” stated a senior government official. This initiative intends to improve public safety and reduce repeat offences by establishing a centralised office in Islamabad and coordinating efforts between the Federal Ministry of Interior and the National Police Bureau. Statistics show an alarming average of 11 child abuse cases each day, emphasising the urgent necessity for this step.

Homo Juluensis: Remains Discovered of Newfound Human Species

Ancient Homo Juluensis skull

The discovery of Homo Juluensis in northeastern China adds another layer to the exciting history of human evolution. According to a study published in Nature Communications, dated 300,000 years ago, this species had a remarkably large skull and large teeth. With fossils of at least 16 individuals, Homo Juluensis holds intriguing clues about early human life in the dense woodlands of East Asia.

Larger Skulls, But Not Necessarily Smarter

The brain volume of Homo Juluensis fell between 1,700 and 1,800 cubic centimetres, which is significantly larger than the average modern human’s 1,200 cubic centimetres. Researchers warn that one must not equate this larger brain size with intelligence. The large skulls are likely an expression of specific evolutionary adaptations related to the environment or diet.

The most interesting feature of Homo Juluensis is that their teeth are much bigger than those of the Neanderthals. These teeth are found to be similar to Denisovans, an obscure human group known only by DNA and a few fragments of fossils. Scientists call for more research to ascertain any possible relationship.

A Resourceful but Challenging Life

Life for Homo Juluensis was harsh but resourceful. Evidence shows that they made stone tools, most likely to process animal hides into clothing and to hunt in small, cooperative groups. Their prey included wild horses, which they fully used for meat, marrow, and hides. These skills indicate more advanced social structures and survival strategies.

Despite their resourcefulness, Homo Juluensis eventually disappeared, probably because of climatic pressures during the Late Quaternary. The extreme glacial periods made it colder and drier, which, with their small, isolated populations, may have pushed them to extinction. The appearance of modern humans around 120,000 years ago also contributed to their decline through genetic mixing and competition.

The discovery of Homo Juluensis redraws our perception of ancient human diversity in East Asia, challenging some established models of evolution. According to Professor Christopher J. Bae, this discovery underscores the complexity of human evolution, particularly about regions that have not been fully studied.

This remarkable species enriches the fossil record and speaks well of humanity’s intricate evolutionary tapestry. The resilience and adaptability that define our shared heritage are glimpsed through the study of Homo Juluensis.

Smog Strikes Again, School Lockdown Revised

Smog engulfs Lahore

School timings are revised once again in Punjab due to Smog’s striking comeback. The Punjab government revised timings across the entire province as smog levels began to decline gradually after being stable for a week. Previously, severe smog had led to the closure of schools and the implementation of other strict measures to ensure public health. These measures included curfew and lockdown procedures to control traffic on the roads. The new and updated schedule aims to provide some relief while maintaining precautions, especially in areas still experiencing hazardous air quality.

Smog and Its Impact on School Operations

The smog crisis in Punjab, especially in Lahore, brought daily life to a standstill. Hazardous air outside has made everyone confined to their homes. They require air purifiers to maintain their health. This has been an extremely difficult time, especially for elders and children. Lahore has been the most polluted city for several weeks now with the Air Quality Index (AQI) readings reaching alarming levels. In some areas like DHA Phase 8, AQI figures soared above 700, well into poisonous territory. This encouraged the government to force a temporary school closure and later introduce revised timings to minimize students’ exposure to toxic air.

The revised schedule delays the opening of schools to avoid morning hours when smog concentrations are at their highest. Additionally, other measures, such as green lockdowns, ban on heavy vehicles, and restrictions on construction, were enforced to tackle pollution.

Learning from Delhi’s Air Quality Measures

Smog hits record levels in Pakistan city
Smog hits record levels in Pakistan city

A very similar situation unfolded in Delhi, India, where smog and poor air quality caused massive disruptions in the daily lives of civilians. Authorities in Delhi implemented various strategies, including odd-even traffic rules, improved monitoring of industrial emissions, and air purifiers in schools, to tackle pollution. The comparative experience from Delhi underscores the need for more proactive and long-term solutions in Punjab.

Moving forward, the updated timings and precautionary measures are steps in the right direction. However, experts warn that more comprehensive actions are needed to address the root causes of smog. These include factors such as crop residue burning, industrial emissions, and vehicular pollution. These factors remain significant contributors to the crisis. Pakistan requires a massive collaborative effort between policymakers, environmental agencies, and the public to create sustainable solutions.

The revised school timings in Punjab show the government’s immense effort to balance public health concerns with educational needs. However, the ongoing smog crisis calls for systemic changes and public cooperation. This is vital to ensure better air quality in the long run. We should learn from Delhi’s valuable and efficient measures to manage such challenges effectively.

Saving a Dying World – World Wildlife Conservation Day 2024

Saving a Dying World - World Wildlife Conservation Day 2024

On December 4th World Wildlife Conservation Day is observed, a day meant to raise awareness and reflect on the state of our planet’s incredible yet vanishing wildlife. It is a day to face a sobering reality: the very species and ecosystems that once made our world beautiful, are dying. The unfortunate truth is that as human activity increases, many species are in danger of going extinct. Since we are all part of a fragile ecosystem that is life, everything is interconnected. The terrible effects of these tragedies will ruin us.

Today is not just about speaking up for animals. It is also about understanding and conveying that we are intrinsically connected. Blood flows through our veins, our hearts beat in a symphony, and we feel pain and mourn our dead. Whether you believe that we were all made by the same source or not, this day allows us to take a pause from our busy lives, to grieve, and to appreciate our fellow inhabitants of Earth, no matter how many legs they have or the how different the texture of their skin is.

The Silent Deaths of Earth’s Most Vulnerable Species

It’s a tragedy we rarely acknowledge amongst the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, but the statistics are undeniable. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) warns that more than 1 million plant and animal species are at risk of disappearing in the coming decades before we can even understand their full role in our world. Among them, our beloved animals such as elephants, tigers, and polar bears, are being wiped from existence. One death at a time.

Faces of The Earth

Think about the Vaquita, a little porpoise found only in the Gulf of California. This species has come to represent an unsettling reality with less than ten individuals remaining in the wild: a species that has been driven to the brink of extinction due to human greed. The tale of the Vaquita is more than just a statistic; it is the heartbreaking truth of a society where the desire for material things outshines the beauty of the natural world. Every death of this precious species adds a little more silence in the ocean and a little more loss in the world.

The Amur leopard is a majestic creature that roams the forests of Russia and China, of which fewer than 100 remain in the wild. Take a moment and think, such an astounding creature, forever gone from the forests where it once prowled. The heartbreaking truth is that, like the Vaquita, it’s not just the loss of an individual animal, it’s the loss of something that roamed our earth, drank from our rivers, and breathed the same air as us.

These species are victims of human decisions rather than merely being victims of nature. The list of endangered species is constantly expanding due to factors like habitat damage, illegal hunting, deforestation, and climate change. And with every species that fades away, we lose something that can never be replaced.

A Race Against Time – Conservation Efforts

Despite these grim realities, there is hope. As, the ancient Roman philosopher Cicero observed, “Where there is life, there is hope.” To preserve what remains of our natural world, conservationists from all across the world are fighting against the tide.

In Africa, organisations like the African Wildlife Foundation are dedicating unrelenting efforts to prevent habitat damage and poaching of glorious animals like rhinos and elephants. However, it’s not enough. Due to ivory poaching, the number of elephants in Africa has decreased by 60% in the past ten years, and rhinos are in danger of going extinct.

There is some hope for tigers in India. The tiger population has increased by 30% in the past ten years as a result of conservation efforts. Even this achievement is bittersweet, though. The truth is that protecting wildlife is a difficult battle, with so many threats to face.

In Pakistan, the Snow Leopard Trust focuses on addressing the declining population of snow leopards in Pakistan, caused by poaching, killings by herders, and so on. Community-based conservation is one of the key aspects of the Trust’s efforts in Pakistan, which involves educating local people about the importance of snow leopards and encouraging them to protect these animals.

These species, once they’re gone, they are gone forever.

The Heartbreaking Truth: What’s at Stake

The loss of Vaquita the porpoise, the Amur leopard, the elephants, the bees, the coral reefs, these are not just statistics. These are the deaths of creatures that once roamed the Earth in large numbers, lived in our oceans, and adorned our forests. The heartache from losing them is not just because they are living, breathing creatures. But because we are to blame. Not only are we losing their unique characteristics, and their unmatched beauty, but also the significant roles they play in maintaining the balance of our delicate ecosystems that sustain life, ours included.

On World Wildlife Conservation Day, we are reminded of the world we are losing, little by little, species by species. However, there is still time to change things. There is time yet to stop the damage and begin preserving what is left.

Rashid Latif Wants Haris Rauf In South Africa Tests

rashid-latif-wants-haris-rauf-in-south-africa-tests-pcb-considering-to-reinstate-haris-rauf-central-contract

The ongoing T20I series against Zimbabwe has sparked more than a few debates, but one selection, in particular, has former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif scratching his head.

Right-arm speedster Haris Rauf, known for his fiery pace and lethal spells, is leading Pakistan’s bowling attack in Zimbabwe. However, Latif feels Haris is being overworked in matches that don’t demand his presence.

Speaking on a YouTube channel, Latif didn’t hold back his thoughts. “They should bring Haris for the South Africa Tests. He’s playing unnecessarily in these (Zimbabwe) T20Is,” he said.

Read More: Aaqib Javed Reveals Reasons Behind Dropping Key Players For South Africa

Should Haris Rauf Be Rested?

Haris Rauf has been a vital cog in Pakistan’s bowling lineup, but as Latif rightly pointed out, why isn’t he being given a break? “If you can drop Shaheen, Hasnain, Naseem, and even Babar, why not your main weapon Haris Rauf?” Latif questioned.

It’s a fair observation. If star players like Shaheen Afridi are being rested for bigger assignments, why push Haris into a T20 series where his absence might not hurt Pakistan’s chances? Instead, his skills could be preserved for the far more demanding conditions of South Africa.

Why Haris in South Africa Makes Sense?

South African pitches, known for their pace and bounce, are a bowler’s paradise for someone like Haris Rauf. Latif firmly believes that Haris could wreak havoc in the upcoming Test series.

“He can be lethal in South Africa. I can guarantee his success, but I can’t say the same for other bowlers,” Latif said confidently. That’s high praise coming from a former captain who has seen plenty of raw talent over the years.

haris-rauf-central-contract-termination-reaction

With his ability to generate pace and extract bounce, Haris could thrive in South Africa’s conditions. Tests require precision, and the extra workload of T20 cricket might take away some of his sharpness when it’s needed most.

It’s worth noting that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has kept Haris in only white-ball sides for the tour of South Africa, not showing faith in his abilities for the longer format.

Aaqib Javed Reveals Reasons Behind Dropping Key Players For South Africa

aaqib-javed-on-sajid-khan-shaheen-afridi-south-africa-pcb-head-coach

Squad announcements always spark debates, and the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) recent selections for the South Africa tour are no different. From leaving out seasoned performers to focusing on long-term goals, the decisions have raised plenty of eyebrows.

But interim white-ball head coach and selector Aaqib Javed has stepped forward to explain the reasoning behind these bold moves.

Sajid Khan: A Tough Omission

One of the most debated exclusions is Sajid Khan, the off-spinner who recently wreaked havoc against England with 19 wickets. So, why leave out someone in red-hot form?

Aaqib Javed acknowledged how difficult this decision was. “Leaving out Sajid, despite his stellar performances, was extremely tough. But the conditions in Centurion and Cape Town favor pace, so we opted for Mohammad Abbas, a master of seam bowling,” he explained.

sajid-khan-reveals-origin-of-his-viral-celebration-ms-dhoni

For Sajid’s fans, this might sting. But the team management seems to be banking on pace dominance in South Africa’s fast-bowler-friendly conditions.

Shaheen Afridi’s Workload Management

Shaheen Shah Afridi’s absence from the Test squad has also raised questions. However, Javed clarified that this is a calculated move.

“Shaheen’s exclusion is strategic,” he said. “We want him fresh—both mentally and physically—for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.”

shaheen-afridi-accused-misbehaving-by-gary-kirsten

With the Champions Trophy being hosted in Pakistan, keeping the spearhead pacer in prime shape makes sense. It’s a long-term gamble, but if it pays off, Afridi could be at his devastating best when it matters most.

Fakhar Zaman’s Struggles

Another notable name missing is Fakhar Zaman. The explosive opener hasn’t been at his best lately, and Javed confirmed that his omission boils down to form and fitness issues.

“Fakhar wasn’t considered because he hasn’t regained match fitness,” Javed explained. While this decision feels pragmatic, it’s undoubtedly a disappointment for fans hoping to see the left-hander back in action.

Read More: Shoaib Akhtar Warns Babar Azam: Deliver in Champions Trophy 2025 Or Face Axe

Javed stressed that the primary goal of these squad decisions is to prepare for the Champions Trophy 2025. With less than two years to go, the selectors want consistency in the ODI squad while adapting to different conditions.

“This tour is part of the bigger picture,” he said. “We’re maintaining continuity in the ODI squad while fine-tuning combinations.”

Mohammad Abbas Returns To Pakistan Squad For South Africa Tour

mohammad-abbas-pakistan-squad-for-south-africa-tour

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has officially announced the squads for the much-anticipated South Africa tour, and there’s a lot to unpack! The squads, covering Tests, ODIs, and T20Is, have a mix of experience, youth, and some surprise inclusions. Let’s dive into the details.

The Comeback King: Mohammad Abbas

One of the most notable stories is the return of veteran pacer Mohammad Abbas to the Test squad. Abbas, who last donned the Pakistan jersey in August 2021, is back after a phenomenal Quaid-e-Azam Trophy season, where he picked up 31 wickets in just five matches.

Read More: Champions Trophy: Will PCB’s ‘Partnership Formula’ Solve Pakistan-India Deadlock?

With 90 wickets in 25 Tests, Abbas brings a wealth of experience. His ability to swing the ball in seamer-friendly South African conditions could be crucial for Pakistan’s success.

What about Babar and Shaheen?

Babar Azam, as always, remains the centerpiece of Pakistan’s cricketing ambitions. The star batter has been named across all three squads, a testament to his importance in all formats.

Pace spearhead Shaheen Shah Afridi has been included in the ODI and T20I squads but will skip the Tests. The PCB seems keen on managing his workload ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Similarly, Naseem Shah, returning after missing the last two Tests against England, will feature in both Tests and ODIs. His raw pace and bounce are tailor-made for South African pitches.

problem-isnt-babar-azam-shaheen-afridi-nasser-hussain-shan-masood-to-drop-babar-rizwan-shaheen

New Faces and Rising Stars

The squads also include exciting young talent. Left-arm wrist-spinner Sufyan Muqeem earned his maiden ODI call-up after impressing with eight wickets in two T20Is, including a sensational 5-for-3 performance.

In the T20I squad, Jahandad Khan and Mohammad Abbas Afridi are two names to watch as selectors shown faith in them after Australia and Zimbabwe tour. Their inclusion signals the selectors’ intent to give emerging players a platform on the big stage.

The Spinner Conundrum

The Test squad’s spin department raised a few eyebrows. Sajid Khan, despite taking 19 wickets against England, has been omitted. The selectors opted for only one specialist spinner, Noman Ali, based on the conditions in Centurion and Newlands. Noman, with 67 wickets in 17 Tests, will shoulder the spin responsibilities alone.

Shan Masood will captain the Test side, with Saud Shakeel serving as vice-captain. The squad combines experienced names like Abdullah Shafique and Salman Ali Agha with promising players like Saim Ayub and Aamir Jamal.

Gaddafi Stadium’s Renovation 80% Complete in 53 Days: PCB

Mohsin Naqvi

Mohsin Naqvi, the chairman of the PCB, visited Gaddafi Stadium to examine the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025 renovations. He examined the newly constructed upper-tier seating structure and appreciated the better view from the top seats. Naqvi also ordered the building of high-quality grills along the trench for aesthetic purposes, stating, “The renovated stadium will have a seating capacity of approximately 34,000 spectators and we aim to complete the project before the Champions Trophy in 2025.”

Officials stated that 80% of the construction work was done within 53 days, with 75% of the enclosure work completed. Naqvi claimed that the stadium is being restored to international standards. On another issue, the PCB rejected the BCCI’s hybrid model plan, asking that the event be held solely in Pakistan.

Speaking to the media at Dubai Stadium, Naqvi emphasised that any new formula regarding the ICC event must ensure equality and fairness.

”All the boards are trying to ensure a win-win for all; Pakistan also wants that cricket should win.” said Mohsin Naqvi.

South Korea’s President Yoon Reverses Martial Law

South Korea's President Yoon Reverses Martial Law

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law on Tuesday night. His declaration had shocked the nation and led to a standoff with lawmakers, who strongly opposed his actions. Faced with protests and criticism, he announced that the decision would be reversed by Wednesday morning.

Opposition Strongly Rejects Martial Law

The opposition Democratic Party, led by Lee Jae-Myung, called the martial law unconstitutional. Lee argued that it was an unjustified move against the people. He said, “President Yoon declared emergency martial law for no reason. Tanks, armoured vehicles and soldiers with guns and swords will soon control the country.” The Democratic Party and other critics saw the martial law as an overreach of power and a threat to democracy.

Aftermath of the Reversal

Protestors chanted, “We won!” celebrating the rejection of the sudden Martial law. The Democratic Party intensified its calls for President Yoon to step down, with Park Chan-Dae, a senior member of parliament, stating, “Even if martial law is lifted, he cannot avoid treason charges. It was clearly revealed to the entire nation that President Yoon could no longer run the country normally. He should step down.”

The party also announced plans to have Yoon impeached if he did not resign immediately. “We will not sit idly and watch President Yoon’s crime of destroying the Constitution and trampling on democracy,” the Democratic Party declared.

Ruling Party and Government Response

Han Dong-Hoon, leader of Yoon’s ruling People’s Power Party, issued an apology to the public for the situation. He called for the Minister of Defense to be fired, saying, “The president must directly and thoroughly explain this tragic situation. The Minister of Defense, who recommended this martial law, should be immediately dismissed, and all those responsible must be held strictly accountable.”

Historical Context of Martial Law

This crisis marked the first time after decades that South Korea faced a martial law declaration. The last time such a measure was taken was in 1980 during a nationwide uprising led by students and labour unions.

President Yoon Suk Yeol’s unexpected decision to declare martial law and then quickly cancel it demonstrates the high level of political tension in South Korea. The strong reactions from lawmakers, opposition parties, and the public show concerns about democracy and the law.

The World’s Richest Man Loses Again in the Fight for His Salary

The World’s Richest Man Loses Again in the Fight for His Salary

A Delaware judge has once again blocked Elon Musk’s record-breaking compensation package at Tesla. This decision stops Musk from accessing a massive pay plan that could have been worth $101.4 billion, according to Equilar, a compensation consulting firm. This happened after the value of Tesla’s stock increased significantly.

Impact on Musk’s Wealth

Musk continues to be the richest man in the world despite the decision having an impact on his compensation plan. This is because Musk’s strong relationships with President-elect Donald Trump encouraged investors and caused Tesla’s stock to surge. Moreover, Musk’s wealth surpassed $300 billion, currently standing at $348B, according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

Court’s Previous Rejections

Earlier this year, in January, Judge Kathaleen St. J. McCormick also rejected the plan, calling it excessive. Even after shareholders approved it, she reaffirmed her decision, saying that the deal was unfair to Tesla’s shareholders. McCormick ruled that the Tesla board was unduly influenced by Musk when they approved the pay plan in 2018. She also highlighted that most of the board members had conflicts of interest.

Judge Pushes Back on Board’s Arguments

In her ruling, McCormick disagreed with the idea that a shareholder vote could change the court’s decision. She stated that the Tesla board and Musk had no grounds to reverse her decision. Adding salt to the wound, McCormick awarded $345 million to the lawyers representing shareholder investor, Tornetta, for their work on the case. While this amount was smaller than the lawyers’ original request of 29 million Tesla shares, it’s still one of the largest lawyer payouts in US shareholder lawsuits.

Musk’s Reaction

Elon Musk called the verdict “absolute corruption” in his response on his social media network, X, formerly known as Twitter. “Shareholders should control company votes, not judges,” he added. Musk has said in the past that in order to keep control of Tesla and grow into artificial intelligence, he needs a bigger share in the business.

The Tesla board declared its intention to appeal the verdict to the Delaware Supreme Court following the ruling. It can take several months to make this appeal.

Two Pakistani Women Made it to the BBC 100 Women 2024 List!

BBC 100 Women List 2024

There is nothing a woman can’t do—from running a household to running the world! The BBC 100 Women 2024 list proves exactly that. Every year since 2013, the BBC has published an annual list of women from all around the world who have made a difference in their communities, simultaneously changing the world one step at a time.

How It Started

BBC launched the series in 2013 after a heinous rape incident that took place in Delhi India. The Nirbhaya Case highlighted the fatal assault and rape of a 22-year-old girl that ultimately went viral throughout the world. That is when BBC editor Fiona Crack and other editors were inspired to create a series that solely focused on women, their issues and achievements no matter where they lived. The series has since then covered various issues like education, health, sexual abuse, domestic abuse etc. and has provided women with a platform where they can address their problems.

Pakistani Women Who Made It to the List

This year again, we witnessed an amazing list of women from all around the world who have been constantly making an effort to change society for the better. Among them are two Pakistani women: Baloch rights activist Mahrang Baloch and singer Hadiqa Kiani.

Among them is the Medical Doctor and Political Activist Mahrang Baloch. Baloch’s calling came after her father, too, allegedly disappeared and was found dead two years later with signs of torture. Since then, Baloch has become an active part of the demonstrations under the banner of her own human rights group Baloch Yakjehti (Unity) Committee BYC.

Hadiqa Kiani

Singer and songwriter Hadiqa Kiani is not a name unknown to the Pakistani people. Kiani is one of the most celebrated singers in the country who rose to fame in the 1990s during the pop music scene. She has stayed relevant since. Apart from her beautiful voice, Kiani is also known for her humanitarian work ever since she launched the Vaseela-e-Raah project after the 2022 floods in Pakistan. The project has since helped build 370 homes and other facilities in regions of Balochistan and South Punjab.

Besides Baloch and Kiani, many other remarkable women have also made it to the list. Some of these names include 22-year-old journalist, Palestia Alaqad, from Palestine who covered the initial war days and shared the experience with her followers through her social media. Her memoir ‘Eyes on Gaza’ will be published soon.

Other names include media entrepreneur Hamida Aman from Afghanistan who launched the Begum Academy, an online space with free courses for students who can’t attend school after the Taliban regime. Photojournalist Christina Assi from Lebanon also made it to the list. She got severely injured in an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon while reporting a blast. Hinda Abidi, chief editor of Somalia’s first and only women media team, was also among many others.

The BBC 100 Women 2024 list is evidence that women can reach new heights despite all the obstacles they face every day. With Mahrang Baloch and Hadiqa Kiani’s names on the list, Pakistanis cannot help but feel immensely proud.

5 Years or One Million Fine for Spreading Fake News, Proposes Government

5 Years One Million Fine for Spreading Fake News, Proposes Govt

The federal government says people found guilty of spreading fake news could now face a five-year prison sentence or a Rs1 million fine. As reported by Geo News, this is part of initial amendments to the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016.

Creation of a Digital Rights Protection Authority

The drafted amendments also propose the establishment of a new body called the Digital Rights Protection Authority (DRPA). This authority will have the power to block or remove online content that is considered harmful to public safety or national interests. Additionally, it will be able to take action against content that spreads false information, causes panic or disrupts public peace.

“Individuals found guilty of such offences may face both imprisonment and fines,” reads the draft.

The law specifies that any content involving threats, false accusations, or pornography will be removed. However, decisions made by the authority can be challenged in a court, assuring sincerity.

Furthermore, the authority will have a team of a chairman and six members, including three ex-officio members. These members will be tasked with protecting digital rights and maintaining cybersecurity across the country.

Government’s Efforts Against Fake News

These proposed-changes come after concerns raised by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s administration about the misuse of social media platforms for spreading fake news and misinformation.

In addition to the banning of X, formerly known as Twitter, Pakistan has also experienced irregular internet disruptions, which have made it difficult for users to share media and access social media platforms. This could be due to the government conducting multiple tests of its internet firewall, with the first few trials taking place in July and August.

Misuse of Social Media

Information Minister Attaullah Tarar recently accused the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party of using artificial intelligence to create fake images and spread misleading information on social media. He pointed out that the PTI had circulated 2019 photographs from its time in power to confuse the public.

Tarar also commented on a viral video showing a man being dragged off a container during PTI’s “do-or-die” protest in Islamabad. He clarified that the man, from Mandi Bahauddin, was not praying as some had claimed, but was filming a TikTok video, and assured the public that he was alive.

The proposed amendments to Pakistan’s cybercrime laws aim to tackle the spread of fake news and online content that harms public safety or national interests. The creation of the Digital Rights Protection Authority will play a key role in monitoring and removing harmful online material as well.
