Hundreds of Dinosaur Footprints Found in UK Quarry

Hundreds of Dinosaurs Footprint Found in UK Quarry

In a discovery that has stunned the palaeontology world, British researchers have uncovered around 200 dinosaur footprints in Oxfordshire, dating back 166 million years. This find, the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom, offers a fascinating glimpse into a prehistoric world.

Unveiling the Dinosaur Highway

A worker at Dewars Farm Quarry discovered the footprints by chance when he noticed unusual patterns while stripping clay. Following the incident, Researchers from Oxford and Birmingham Universities excavated the site, revealing five extensive trackways. The longest track stretches nearly 500 feet, making it one of the largest dinosaur highway sites globally.

Herbivorous cetiosaurus, or large, long-necked dinosaurs are thought to leave four of the trackways. The fifth likely belonged to a nine-meter-long carnivorous megalosaurus, a notorious carnivore that gained fame through its three-toed feet. It was also one of the first dinosaurs to be named.

Preservation Against the Odds

“This site is breathtaking in scale and preservation,” said Prof. Kirsty Edgar of the University of Birmingham. “It’s like stepping into the past and witnessing these giant creatures in action.”

The meticulous excavation involved a 100-person team working tirelessly over a week in June. Advanced technology played a key role, with researchers capturing 20,000 photographs and creating 3D models of the site using drone photography. These efforts aim to unlock secrets about dinosaur movement, size and behaviour.

Chance may have been the site’s best friend in preservation. “A sudden storm could have covered the tracks in sediment, protecting them from erosion,” said paleobiologist Richard Butler.

Building on Past Discoveries

It is not the first significant find in the area. In 1997, 40 dinosaur tracks were discovered nearby, some stretching 180 meters. However, this latest excavation dwarfs those discoveries, making the region one of importance to understanding Jurassic life.

This finding has captured the public imagination, the surreal impact affecting even those most closely associated. Gary Johnson was the worker who spotted the tracks; he has been quoted reflecting on the incident, saying “To be the first person to see them was magical—a real tingling moment.”

The findings, featured in the BBC documentary Digging for Britain, airing January 8, underscore the thrill of uncovering ancient history. As researchers dig deeper into the treasure trove of Jurassic history, this gem promises to reveal much more about Earth’s incredible past.

Three Hunters Arrested for Killing Markhor in Pishin

Authorities in Bostan, Pishin, arrested three hunters for illegally killing a Markhor, an endangered species protected under the Wildlife Act. Deputy Commissioner Zahid Khan reported that the operation successfully recovered the hunted Markhor.

The suspects, identified as Izhar Khan, Masoor Khan and Saddam Khan, allegedly hunted the Markhor in Taktou, a restricted area. Legal proceedings are underway and charges have been filed under the Wildlife Act. The Deputy Commissioner also revealed that two of the accused were employees of the Balochistan Constabulary and the Water and Sanitation Authority (WASA).

This incident is not isolated. In 2021, a Markhor in Chitral was shot and injured by a tourist. The KP Wildlife Department had to rescue the injured animal from a river. A First Information Report (FIR) was registered in Chitral against the culprits.

Markhor, the national animal of Pakistan, is endangered and hunting it is prohibited. These incidents highlight the need for stricter enforcement of wildlife protection laws and public awareness.

Father of Murdered Sara Sharif ‘Attacked in Prison’

Father of Murdered Sara Sharif 'Attacked in Prison'

Sara Sharif’s father Urfan Sharif, who was convicted last month for the murder of the 10-year-old, was attacked at Belmarsh Prison on Thursday, Sky News reported. Urfan reportedly sustained “cuts to his face and body,” which required stitches. He received medical aid within the prison for his injuries.

“Police are investigating an incident involving the assault of a prisoner at HMP Belmarsh on 1 January,” a spokesperson for the Prison Service said. However, the spokesperson failed to provide further details about the incident, deeming it “inappropriate.”

Separately, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said officers are probing “an allegation that a prisoner was assaulted at Belmarsh”. He said that the injuries Urfan suffered were not life-threatening.

Sara’s stepmother, Beinash Batool, and Urfan were given life imprisonment last month for inflicting years of “horrific torture” that led to Sara’s death.

The court was told that Sara endured “unbearable suffering, anxiety, and fear” as she was repeatedly subjected to beatings, burns, bites and physical restraint at her home.

Urfan received a minimum sentence of 40 years, while Batool was given 33 years. Authorities also convicted Sara’s uncle, Faisal Malik, 29, of causing or permitting her death. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison.

In a televised sentencing, Justice Cavanagh said Sara’s death “was the culmination of years of neglect, frequent assaults and what can only be described as torture”, mainly at the hands of Sharif.

He told Sharif: “You treated her in such a way because you considered it your right to impose harsh discipline on her. Sara was a brave, feisty and spirited child. She was not as submissive as you wanted her to be. She stood up to you.”

Shubman Gill Caught in the Crossfire of Rs 450 Crore Ponzi Scam

shubman-gill-caught-in-the-crossfire-of-rs-450-crore-ponzi-scam

Cricket fans, hold onto your seats because this story is as unexpected as a last-over thriller. Shubman Gill, one of India’s brightest cricketing stars, and three of his Gujarat Titans teammates—Sai Sudharsan, Rahul Tewatia, and Mohit Sharma—have found themselves tangled in a massive Rs 450 crore Ponzi scheme.

Read More: Pat Cummins Faces Tough Choice: Cricket or Family?

The Scam That Shocked Gujarat

The case revolves around Bhupendrasinh Zala, the alleged mastermind behind this massive fraud. Through his company, BZ Financial Services, Zala reportedly lured investors with promises of sky-high returns—36% annually, to be precise. Instead of delivering on those promises, he’s accused of swindling people and using the funds to amass assets worth Rs 100 crore.

Zala was finally arrested on December 27 after being on the run for nearly a month. Investigators revealed that he managed financial transactions worth Rs 6,000 crore, with Rs 175 crore being routed through ICICI and IFC banks. Talk about a colossal operation!

How Are the Cricketers Involved?

Here’s where it gets even more surprising. During his interrogation, Zala confessed to taking investments from these cricketers.

Shubman Gill, currently in Australia for the Test series, reportedly invested a whopping Rs 1.95 crore. The other players—Sai Sudharsan, Rahul Tewatia, and Mohit Sharma—contributed smaller amounts.

While their involvement seems limited to being investors, the Gujarat CID Crime Branch believes their cooperation will be crucial for the investigation.

Why This Matters?

For fans, seeing their favorite cricketers’ names linked to such a scandal is unsettling. But let’s put things into perspective: investing in schemes promising high returns isn’t uncommon, even among high-profile individuals. Unfortunately, scams like these don’t spare anyone—whether you’re a cricket star or a regular investor.

The fact that these players trusted Zala enough to invest speaks volumes about the lengths scammers go to appear credible. Zala had set up multiple offices across Gujarat and operated through agents, making his operation seem legitimate.

Gill and the other players are expected to be summoned for questioning once Gill returns from Australia. While there’s no indication that the players had any knowledge of the fraudulent nature of Zala’s operations, their statements could provide crucial insights into the case.

Pat Cummins Faces Tough Choice: Cricket or Family?

Pat Cummins Disses Rohit Sharma

Australia’s cricket captain, Pat Cummins, might be missing from action later this month. The reason? A personal milestone that means more to him than any series win — the birth of his second child.

With the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka set to begin on January 29, the timing overlaps with the expected arrival of his child with wife Becky. Understandably, Cummins hinted that he may prioritize family over cricket.

“It’s pretty hard to plan exactly the day, but definitely (I might miss the Sri Lanka tour),” Cummins said.

A Shift in Priorities

Cummins’ outlook on life has evolved significantly over the past year, especially after the loss of his mother. Earlier in 2023, he left the India tour to be with her during her final moments, a decision that deeply impacted him. Since then, he has been vocal about balancing his professional commitments with personal well-being.

Reflecting on his changed perspective, Cummins shared:
“In some ways, it really makes you focus on what I think is important. It’s family, it’s enjoyment, it’s trying to find joy in life.”

His words resonate with anyone trying to juggle career and family. While cricket remains a huge part of his life, Cummins doesn’t shy away from admitting the “opportunity cost” of every tour or game he plays.

“When you go away on tour, you’re missing out on family time or moments. That’s a deliberate choice, so you have to make sure you’re making the most of that tour or that game,” he explained.

Regrets and Redemption

This isn’t the first time Cummins has faced such a dilemma. During the World Cup, he missed significant early moments with his first child, Albie. That experience left him longing for a better balance.

“I missed a big chunk (of Albie’s early days) last time, and I want to work out how we can spend a bit more time at home for that initial period this time,” he said.

It’s refreshing to see a top-tier athlete like Cummins openly discuss the challenges of balancing a demanding career with family life.

What About Leadership?

If Cummins does skip the Sri Lanka series, Australia will need to name a stand-in captain. The likely candidates are Steve Smith or Travis Head, both capable leaders.

While the team will undoubtedly miss Cummins’ presence, his potential absence underscores a broader trend in sports — players prioritizing mental health and family over endless commitments.

Cummins’ situation is a reminder that athletes are human, too. Behind the glamour and pressure of professional sports lies the universal challenge of balancing work and family.

Can Pakistan Defend Their Champions Trophy? The Head Coach Thinks So!

aaqib-javed-on-sajid-khan-shaheen-afridi-south-africa-pcb-head-coach

The ICC Men’s Champions Trophy is just weeks away, and cricket fever is rising in Pakistan. As the defending champions, Pakistan has a lot riding on this tournament, especially since they’ll be playing in front of their home crowd. Aqib Javed, Pakistan’s interim head coach, is confident the team can deliver a repeat of their historic 2017 triumph.

The Road to the Champions Trophy

Speaking on the PCB Podcast, Aqib shared his excitement about the team’s preparations. With a tri-nation series against South Africa and New Zealand on the horizon, Pakistan has the perfect opportunity to fine-tune their squad and strategy. Aqib believes this series will not only boost the team’s morale but also help in making key decisions before the eight-team tournament kicks off.

“Tri-nation [series] before Champions Trophy is a good opportunity and it is against major teams,” he said. “South Africa is a top side, then New Zealand. So, it will help in clearing a couple of doubts in the decision-making.”

Home Advantage: A Game-Changer

Playing at home is always special, and Aqib thinks Pakistan can capitalize on familiar conditions and passionate fans to defend their title successfully. The 2017 Champions Trophy win, where Pakistan crushed arch-rivals India in the final, is still fresh in the minds of cricket lovers. Aqib believes the team has what it takes to relive that glory.

“Champions Trophy in Pakistan, in front of our fans, we are very excited, and I think Pakistan can repeat that,” he shared confidently.

Expanding the Player Pool

Aqib also outlined his long-term vision for the team. He emphasized the need to develop a larger pool of players to manage workload and sustain performance levels. With cricket evolving at a breakneck pace, he believes rotational policies and specialized squads for different formats are the way forward.

“The way cricket is evolving, we will have to increase our players’ pool. For that, you need to take brave decisions sometimes,” Aqib explained.

He stressed the importance of giving players breaks to work on their physical and technical skills, aiming to keep them at their peak for 10 to 12 years. This means focusing not just on the short-term but also on the future of Pakistan cricket.

Fresh and Ready for the Challenge

Aqib’s approach to player management is refreshing. By providing breaks and balancing workloads, he aims to keep the players mentally and physically sharp. “The strive would be to give them four to six weeks of rest after three months so that they can work on their skills, regain physical fitness,” he said.

This philosophy isn’t just about winning one tournament; it’s about creating a sustainable system that keeps players fresh and motivated for years to come.

Taskin Ahmed Shatters BPL Record With Figures Worth 7/19

Taskin Ahmed Shatters BPL Record With Figures Worth 7-19

Right-arm pacer Taskin Ahmed returned with bowling figures of 7-19 to break the record of Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir during the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) match at Shere Bangla National Stadium on Thursday.

The 29-year-old pacer, who is playing for Durbar Rajshahi, took three wickets in the final over against Dhaka Capital to record the best bowling figures in the history of BPL. His record spell restricted Dhaka Capital to 174-9 in the first innings. In response, Durbar Rajshahi successfully chased the target in 18.1 overs at the loss of three wickets, thanks to skipper Anamul Haque’s unbeaten 73.

Prior to Taskin Ahmed, the record for best bowling figures in BPL was held by Mohammad Amir. The Pakistan pacer recorded the figures of 6-17 while playing for the Khulna Tigers against Sylhet Royals, in the 2020 edition of the league.

It’s worth noting that Taskin’s bowling figures are the third-best figures in T20 cricket across the globe. The record for the best bowling figures in T20 cricket is currently held by Malaysia’s talented Syazrul Idrus. He astoundingly took 7 wickets after conceding only 8 runs in a T20I match against China in 2023. Meanwhile, Netherlands’ Colin Ackermann is in second position with his figures of 7-18 while playing for Leicestershire in England’s Vitality Blast against the Birmingham Bears.

20 Missing as Boat Sinks off Italy

20 Missing as Boat Sinks off Italy
Source: BR

At least 20 drowned after a small migrant boat capsised on its precarious journey from Libya to Italy. Only seven managed to survive and landed on Lampedusa, a small Italian island. Among those missing are five women and three children, showing us how desperate conditions have become the source of such dangerous routes.

A Dangerous Route with Deadly Consequences

The ill-fated vessel left port at Zuwara, Libya, late Monday, capsising into the early Tuesday morning. A body has been reported recovered without much success despite all rescue endeavours so far conducted. This comes after the stark figures of central Mediterranean deaths numbering close to 24,500 since the year 2014, statistics published by IOM.

At least 20 migrants missing as boat sinks off Italy, seven rescued
Source: Deccan Herald

It has been described that the central Mediterranean route, from North Africa to southern Europe, is the deadliest migration route globally. For most people, it is the only hope for a life free of poverty, war, and persecution. Libya and Tunisia are considered departure points; however, political chaos in those countries heightens the risks taken by migrants.

Italy’s Struggle with Migration

Italy has been trying to balance humanitarian concerns with national policy in its complex dynamics of migration. The Italian government recently introduced measures to curb migrant departures, claiming that such steps are necessary to prevent deaths at sea. In 2024, migrant landings in Italy declined to 66,320, a sharp drop from the 157,651 recorded the previous year.

However, this statistics only hides the worst side of this scenario. With stricter controls along the border, migrants find themselves stuck in risky situations in places like Libya and Tunisia. More often, a move to migrate across the dangerous crossing between Libya or Tunisia is one driven by need, not by choice.

The Urgency for a Global Solution

This tragedy makes it a time of crying urgency that there be international coordination on matters that affect this root cause. Authorities should prioritise safe pathways and legal entry as well as keeping the dignity intact of those with hope to escape despair.

So long as it is so, the Mediterranean Sea will both serve as a grave and symbol for those who risk everything for hope. As the world marks another year, the voices of the lost echo across the waves, urging us to confront the human cost of inaction

Tesla Cybertruck Exploded Outside Trump Hotel

Tesla Cybertruck Exploded Outside Trump Hotel

A Tesla Cybertruck carrying fuel canisters and firework mortars exploded outside the Trump Hotel’s glass entrance in Las Vegas. The incident killed the driver and injured seven others. Police have not released the names of the individuals involved but confirmed all injuries were minor. The truck, rented in Colorado, arrived in Las Vegas less than two hours before the explosion.

Dramatic footage showed the truck parked before exploding, sending bursts of colourful fireworks in all directions. Sheriff Kevin McMahill shared images of the aftermath, revealing charred remains, fuel canisters and firework mortars. Officials are investigating potential connections to a deadly truck attack in New Orleans earlier the same day.

President Joe Biden stated that the White House is tracking the Las Vegas explosion and its possible connection to New Orleans. “Law enforcement and the intelligence community are investigating this as well, including whether there’s any possible connection with the attack in New Orleans,” he said during an evening address.

The FBI has not confirmed whether the incident was an act of terrorism or linked to the Islamic State group. A Turo spokesperson confirmed both vehicles involved in the incidents were rented through their app and noted that the renters had no known criminal backgrounds. Sheriff McMahill reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the Las Vegas community.

Emergency responders quickly extinguished the fire, and guests were evacuated to other locations. Eric Trump, President-elect Donald Trump’s son, thanked first responders for their professionalism, stating, “The safety and well-being of our guests and staff remain our top priority.”

Pakistan Ranks Second Globally in Internet Shutdowns in 2024

internet shutdown

In 2024, Pakistan earned a distinction in internet shutdowns, ranking second in the world. With 1,861 hours of disruptions, only Myanmar surpassed Pakistan in this troubling metric. These shutdowns were not only problematic during everyday life, but also impacted Pakistan’s digital economy. While the global demand for the Internet is growing, Pakistan seems to be ageing backwards. The frequent blackouts suggest a critical issue that requires urgent attention.

A Major Setback for Pakistan’s Digital Economy

The Top10VPN report revealed that Pakistan’s internet shutdowns cost the economy an estimated $351 million in 2024. The disruptions caused by the blackouts affected nearly 83 million users. These numbers account for over 40% of the top 15 most vulnerable nations. What’s even more concerning is the duration of these shutdowns. They rapidly increased by a horrifying 619% from 259 hours in 2023. These statistics pushed Pakistan from seventh to second place globally.

Read more: We Have Taken a Stand on the Issue of VPN Ban in Pakistan: PTA

Each hour of these shutdowns cost Pakistan a rough $1 million, according to the Pakistan Software House Association (P@SHA). This is a staggering number for an economy that is already victim to increasing inflation and numerous other crises. The information and communication technology (ICT) sector, brought in $3.3 billion in 2024, trailing only textiles and food. They are a key contributor to Pakistan’s economy. However, these disruptions raised operational costs for tech companies and discouraged them from bringing in additional foreign exchange.

The industry has also estimated that undocumented exports are nearly the same as the documented figures. This suggests that while the government works on improving exports, the frequent shutdowns are causing unmeasurable losses.

Pakistan Ranks Second Globally in Internet Shutdowns in 2024
Pakistan Ranks Second Globally in Internet Shutdowns in 2024

Declining Internet Access and Quality

Internet usage in Pakistan has also seen a steady decline. Sources suggest that the web traffic in the country dropped throughout most of 2024, with only 30 days in the first 11 months showing positive growth. Unfortunately, this contrasts sharply with the global average of 17% growth.

Adding to the problem, Pakistan’s internet speed remains extremely slow. The average download speed in Pakistan stands at 22MBps. This is far behind regional peers like the Philippines (97MBps), Bangladesh (37MBps), and Indonesia (31MBps). This poor quality of the internet further disadvantages the tech sector.

These increasing rates of internet shutdowns position Pakistan as the second-highest country in the category. The internet disruptions not only cost the economy millions but also remove confidence in the country. It gives the impression that services are unreliable. As a nation with significant potential in the IT sector, this issue needs to be addressed. If not, Pakistan risks falling behind in the global digital race.

World Introvert Day: Why Introverts Make Better Leaders

World Introvert Day: Why Introverts Make Better Leaders

January 2nd is World Introvert Day, a day to celebrate the often-underestimated power of introversion, especially in leadership. While nearly 57% of the world’s population prefers introversion, most leadership positions are skewed toward extroverts. Societal norms and unconscious biases often perpetuate the idea that effective leaders must be outgoing and charismatic, but introverted leaders bring unique strengths that can transform workplaces.

The Bias Towards Extraversion in Leadership

Common leadership traits such as assertiveness, visibility, and drama or flamboyance are associated in most cultures with extraversion, especially in countries like the U.S. A recent UK survey also showed that 9 out of 10 individuals reported being pressured to be more extraverted than they would otherwise naturally be. However, national culture itself can overcome the stereotypes linking extraversion to successful leadership. For instance, countries like Singapore and Zambia, respectively, have demonstrated how introverted leaders can make significant contributions.

The surprising reasons why introverts make exceptional leaders - Insperity
Source: Inseptia

It is unconscious biases that have become significant in leadership selection. Humans have the tendency to promote people who think and behave like them, leaving aside those who are quieter and contemplative. However, this bias forgets the creative and novel natures that introverts bring forth in leadership positions.

Strengths of Introverted Leaders

Introverts are excellent at activities that include deep thinking careful decision-making and creating meaningful one-on-one connections. Their tendencies to listen and think before communicating can lead to more thoughtful approaches and the devising of more inclusive decisions. Such novelties hold space to let different ideas germinate by favouring reflection above reaction.

Source: Qrius

Some Tips for Expressing Introversion in Leadership

Let time to think: Introverts feel most themselves when they are allowed to reflect. A manager can allow space for brainstorming or schedule uninterrupted time to focus on certain tasks.

Listen actively: When introverts speak, their words have weight, for they have considered them carefully. An environment in which their voices are heard builds better team dynamics.

Select Your Communication Channels: In most cases, written communication or one-to-one communication works best for introverted team members. Managers need to be aware of these needs and enhance teamwork through them.

Give Them Time to Recharge: Introverts gain energy from being alone. By being aware of this need and allowing quiet time, they are more productive and creative.

As we celebrate World Introvert Day, let us recognise the quiet strength of introverted leaders. Their unique approach enriches teams, fosters innovation, and reminds us that leadership is not about volume but vision.

A Break from Social Media

Meghan’s social media break started in 2020 when Meghan and Prince Harry stepped down from their roles as senior royals. Her earlier Sussex Royal account, created in 2019, served as a venue for announcements such as the birth of her son, Archie, and the decision to step down from royal duties, famously known as “Megxit.”

The Duchess’s social media presence is even older than her royal journey. As an actress on the popular TV series Suits, Meghan had a very popular Instagram account where she shared glimpses of her life. However, before her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018, she deactivated all her accounts because of royal protocols and personal reasons.

A Thoughtful Comeback

In an interview with The Cut in 2022, Meghan continued to dangle the prospect of returning to Instagram but addressed some concerns, mentioning the problem of online harassment. For years, both Meghan and Harry have spoken out about the dangers of social media, especially its effects on mental health and young users. In 2023, they demanded greater content control across the platforms.

Her New Year’s post appears to be thoughtfully constructed return, representing themes of renewal and optimism. Selecting the simple handle @meghan emphasises her personal relationship with the platform and distances herself from the formality of royal life.

More Than a Social Media Post

Meghan’s return to Instagram is more than a personal milestone; it’s a statement of her evolving public image. Known for using her platform to champion causes, promote philanthropy, and share authentic glimpses of her life, her re-emergence suggests she may once again blend personal expression with advocacy.

Pakistan to Export Pilots to Foreign Airlines

Pakistan to Export Pilots to Foreign Airlines

Pakistan, with its bold initiative, is making strides in the aviation industry. It is planning to train pilots and later export them to international airlines. The Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Nadir Shafi Dar, announced the plan during a recent press briefing. The initiative aims to control the preexisting regional shortage of cockpit crew. Moreover, it also positions Pakistan as a hub for skilled aviation professionals.

Addressing Regional Pilot Shortages

The CAA aims to supply the increasing demand for cockpit pilots in the Asia-Pacific region. Nadir Shafi Dar has emphasised that while Pakistan produces enough pilots for its local airlines, the surplus will now be offered to foreign names. This innovative initiative has already garnered interest from two international organisations, which has resulted in the beginning of Phase 1 of the project.

In Phase 1, 12 Pakistani candidates underwent ground training locally and flight training at an academy in Sharjah. Consequently, eight of these pilots have secured jobs with domestic airlines. The specialised training course includes everything from initial cockpit lessons to full commercial pilot certification. These courses are designed to ensure that pilots are well-prepared for global aviation markets.

Pakistan Enters a New Era for Aviation

To improve the legitimacy of this initiative, the CAA finalised agreements with international organisations. These agreements ensure that global airlines cover the cost of pilot training, typically ranging from PKR 10 to 15 million. The programme guarantees employment to those who enrol, making it a cost-effective and career-secure opportunity for aspiring pilots.

What’s even more exciting is that the CAA is establishing training academies in Pakistan. It also encourages local flying clubs to expand facilities to meet the rising demand for pilot training. CAA highlights that these developments will enhance Pakistan’s aviation industry and create promising careers for young talents.

The CAA’s initiative to train and export pilots is a win-win for both Pakistan and beyond. This training programme aims to address the regional shortage of skilled cockpit crew while also creating lucrative opportunities for Pakistan. International companies are already on board and plan to establish local academies and flying clubs. If Pakistanis continue to prioritise training and guarantee job placements then there is no doubt in the success of this country.

Inflation in Pakistan

Inflation in Pakistan

The fight against inflation in Pakistan FY 2024 reflects an economy struggling with uncertainty despite recent glimmers of hope. Inflation was averaging 26% between July and April, which, although a slight decline from the previous year’s 28.2%, has seen a dramatic decrease in year-on-year inflation from 36.4% in April 2023 to 17.3% in April 2024. Yet, these statistics hide a tale of woe, as lived by the ordinary Pakistani.

Root Causes of Rising Prices

The root causes of this crisis are multi-faceted. Supply-demand imbalances, soaring energy prices, and currency depreciation are the top culprits. However, global factors, like the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which disrupted supply chains, added to the domestic challenges, such as the devastating 2022 floods. These forces combined to push basic necessities, from food to fuel, out of reach for many. Wheat flour and rice, among other basic items, saw alarming price hikes, which were quite skewed toward the lower-income class.

Food and energy price hikes increased by 28.4% because of steep tariffs and a weakened rupee. It’s devastating for families stretched at the seams. Even some comfort is found in better crop yields and falling global commodity prices; food inflation in Pakistan remains unrelenting with fresh food rising by 18.5% in FY 2024.

Government Interference: A Step Forward but Not Enough

Government measures, such as the more substantial Ramadan Relief Package and an intensified crackdown on hoarding and smuggling, provide some relief but hardly tackle systemic issues. Since stabilising, the exchange rate has already eased inflationary pressure. It is more or less akin to applying a bandage on a wound that needs surgery.

Pakistan needs bold, long-term economic reforms. Structural inefficiencies, dependence on imports, and underperforming agriculture need to be addressed aggressively. Energy policies need an overhaul for sustainable and affordable supply. Domestic production investment, especially in agriculture, can reduce dependency on volatile global markets.

Source: Daily Destination

Based over the official document for the year 2024 on Finance.gov.pk, here is a detailed analysis of Pakistan’s inflation during FY 2024, focusing on the trends, causes, and government actions to manage rising prices.

1. Overall Inflation Trends in Pakistan:

CPI Inflation: During the period from July-April FY 2024, the Consumer Price Index (CPI) inflation was recorded at 26.0%, which marks a slight improvement from 28.2% during the same period last year.
Year-on-Year Changes: Year-on-year (YoY) inflation dropped to 17.3% in April 2024 from 36.4% in April 2023, representing a significant reduction. In March 2024, inflation stood at 20.7%, so the April numbers reflect a marked month-on-month decline. Similarly, month-on-month (MoM) inflation dropped from an increase of 1.7% in March 2024 to just 0.4% in April 2024.
Inflation Peaked in 2023: Pakistan saw a peak in inflation at 38% in May 2023, which was one of the highest levels recorded.

2. Causes of Inflation in Pakistan:

Supply-Demand Imbalance: The primary driver of inflation in Pakistan was the imbalance between demand and supply. Excessive demand for goods and services, combined with supply-side constraints, led to higher prices.
Energy Prices: Rising energy prices, largely due to currency depreciation and global oil price fluctuations, played a significant role. Energy costs for households (including electricity and gas) increased by 28.4% in FY 2024, compared to 13.6% in FY 2023.
Import Costs: The exchange rate depreciation worsened inflation by increasing the costs of imported goods and services. Non-perishable food items, for example, saw a 26.7% price increase during July-April FY 2024 compared to 36.4% the previous year.
Global Factors: The global disruptions caused by the Russia-Ukraine conflict exacerbated food and energy supply chain issues. Additionally, inflation was driven by domestic economic conditions such as currency depreciation and 2022 floods, which severely impacted agricultural output.

3. Sector-specific Impact:

Food Inflation: Food inflation remained high, though it saw some relief due to improved domestic crop yields and declining global commodity prices. Non-perishable food items increased by 26.7%, while perishable items saw an increase of 18.5% compared to a 47.0% rise last year. Essential food items like tomatoes, onions, and potatoes saw significant price hikes.
Housing and Energy: Inflation in the Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas, and Other Fuels category surged by 28.4% in FY 2024, a substantial rise from 13.6% in the previous year. This increase is attributed to higher energy tariffs and the depreciation of the Pakistani Rupee.

4. Government Measures to Curb Inflation in Pakistan:

Ramadan Relief Package: The government enhanced the Ramadan Relief Package from PKR 7.5 billion to PKR 12.5 billion, providing essential items at subsidized rates.
Price Control Efforts: Federal and provincial governments intensified administrative measures, including crackdowns on illegal foreign exchange operations, hoarding, and smuggling. These measures contributed to stabilizing exchange rates and ensuring smoother supply chains.
Exchange Rate Stability: Actions taken to control illegal foreign exchange activities helped stabilize the exchange rate, further easing inflationary pressures.

5. Core Inflation:

Urban Core Inflation: During the period July-April FY 2024, core inflation (which excludes volatile food and energy prices) in urban areas was recorded at 16.9%, while rural core inflation was higher at 24.0%. This was a slight increase from the previous year’s urban core inflation of 15.6% and rural core inflation of 19.4%.

6. Wholesale Price Index (WPI):

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) saw a decline from 27.3% in December 2023 to 13.9% in April 2024. Overall, WPI inflation rose by 22.4% during July-April FY 2024, compared to 34.1% during the same period last year. This reduction in wholesale inflation is attributed to reduced pressures on food and energy prices.

7. Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI):

The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI), which tracks the prices of essential commodities weekly, showed a YoY increase of 30.2% during July-April FY 2024, compared to 31.7% last year.
Major food items like wheat flour, rice, and sugar contributed significantly to the increase in SPI.

8. Global Context:

Global commodity prices also played a role in shaping domestic inflation in Pakistan. While prices of items like palm oil and soybean oil decreased by 6.9% year-on-year in April 2024, items like crude oil and rice saw price increases of 7.1% and 19.7%, respectively.

9. Future Outlook:

The report forecasts a further decline in inflation for FY 2024, expecting it to fall within the 23-24% range. The decline is attributed to a combination of fiscal consolidation, better global commodity prices, and stable food supplies. Political stability and steady exchange rates are also expected to contribute to this trend.

In the medium term (FY 2025 and FY 2026), inflation is expected to normalize further as the agriculture sector improves and global and domestic conditions stabilize.

Human Cost of Inflation

Inflation is not just an economic burden but a deep social one. It eats away at trust in institutions, fuels inequality, and destabilises communities. While inflation forecasts point to a gradual decline to 23-24% in FY 2024, complacency is not an option. Policymakers must seize this moment to implement transformative policies that prioritise the welfare of the most vulnerable while building resilience against future shocks.

The fight against inflation is not a fight of numbers; it is a fight for the dignity and survival of millions. Pakistan cannot afford half-measures but requires a bold vision and unwavering commitment to secure a stable and prosperous future.
