Meta is planning to build a 50,000-kilometre-long submarine cable, named the Waterworth Project, connecting the US, India, South Africa, Brazil, and other regions. It will be the longest undersea cable when completed.
The project aims to improve internet connectivity and support Meta’s AI initiatives. The cable will use a 24-pair fibre system to increase its capacity.
Undersea cables handle over 95% of global internet traffic. Meta is already involved in the 2Africa cable, a 45,000-kilometre network connecting three continents. Other companies, including Google, are also investing in similar projects.
Many concerns have been raised about undersea cables being vulnerable to damage or attacks. Meta says the Waterworth cable will be placed up to 7,000 meters deep and positioned carefully in shallow waters to prevent damage.

Yet, South Africa appeared to be coasting at 200/3 with nine overs still left. The participants noted that harmonization is critical for unlocking business potential in Pakistan, promoting economic growth.
Islamabad, 21 February 2025 – At a public-private dialogue, government and private stakeholders reached a consensus on the essential need to harmonize legislation in key areas such as provincial taxes and environmental regulations. This agreement served as the centerpiece of a national multi-stakeholder meeting organized by CoRe Alliance, Baby Food and Nutrition Council, and Fruit Juice Council.
The participants noted that harmonization is critical for unlocking business potential in Pakistan, promoting economic growth, and ensuring ease of living for the general populace. Held in Bhurban, the convening brought together political leaders, federal and provincial agencies, representatives from the private sector, and media to discuss regulatory efficiency and business facilitation.
The convening was inaugurated by Ali Pervaiz Malik, the State Minister for Finance and Revenue. In addition, the session featured special addresses by Rana Ihsaan Afzal, the Coordinator to the Prime Minister, and Jameel Qureshi, Federal Secretary SIFC.
Discussions focused on three main areas: creating a Regulatory Framework for Ease of Doing Business through Harmonization, tackling the Growing Challenges of Parallel Trade and Counterfeit Products, and addressing Packaging & Environmental Regulations.
Ali Pervaiz Malik stressed the necessity for policy realignment to boost business growth, citing reforms such as the Regulatory Guillotine, National Tax Council Activation, and the Board of Investment (BOI) Facilitation Desk. Rana Ihsaan Afzal elaborated on Uraan Pakistan and advocated focusing on three ‘E’s—export-driven growth, enhancing the IT sector, and ensuring sustainable energy policies. Jameel Qureshi presented eight imperatives for sustainable economic growth, which included transitioning toward export-led growth, adopting a long-term economic roadmap, digitizing economic processes, and incentivizing domestic production. Additionally, Sheikh Waqar Ahmad from the industry alliances emphasized the importance of public-private consultation to build consensus and highlighted the need for harmonized regulations to drive the economic agenda.
Participants recognized that the national harmonization of food standards represents a gold standard, urging a similar approach in other regulatory areas. They observed that differing tax structures across provinces hinder ease of doing business, with an FBR representative noting that the government is working with the World Bank on tax reform initiatives.
Counterfeit and spurious products—as well as gray trade products violating S.R.O 237—were identified as key reasons for legal businesses losing market share. The potential for exporting packaged food was also highlighted as a strategy to capture growing markets for Halal products. Moreover, the meeting underscored that successful Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes, which rely on a phased approach, require strong collaboration and shared responsibilities between public and private stakeholders, including consumers, with recycling recognized as the backbone of a circular economy.
The closing address was delivered by Ms. Farzana Altaf, Director General of the Pakistan Environmental Protection Agency, who stressed the importance of enacting a unified environmental legislation to support a circular economy.
Government representation included the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC), BOI, Pakistan Standards & Quality Control Authority (PSQCA), all Provincial Food Authorities, FBR, the Ministries of Commerce and Industries & Production, the Senate of Pakistan, the National Tariff Commission and Pakistan, and provincial Environmental Protection Agencies (EPAs).

Delta Offers $30,000 to Passengers After Toronto Crash-Landing
Delta Air Lines is giving $30,000 to each passenger from the flight that crash-landed in Toronto on Monday. The plane skidded along the runway in flames before flipping upside down. Fortunately, all 76 passengers and four crew members survived.
Delta has stated that this compensation is an advance payment to help passengers with immediate financial needs and does not affect their legal rights, though it may be deducted from any future settlements. Some passengers have hired lawyers, saying they suffered serious injuries.
In past incidents, airlines have made similar offers, such as Asiana Airlines giving $10,000 after the 2013 crash in San Francisco and Alaska Airlines’ $1,500 compensation after last year’s mid-air door plug blowout.
The Passengers described the crash as a violent impact, with some hanging upside down in their seats. The cause of this incident is still under investigation. Experts suspect weather conditions and rapid descent may have contributed. The cockpit voice and flight data recorders have been recovered, and Canada’s Transportation Safety Board is leading the investigation.
Delta’s CEO praised the flight crew’s quick actions. The crash is the fourth major air incident in North America in three weeks, but officials say flying remains one of the safest modes of transportation.

Former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir, who shares a close friendship with explosive opener Fakhar Zaman, has shed light on the nature of the injury and the tough road to recovery that lies ahead.
Pakistan’s Champions Trophy 2025 campaign has hit an early roadblock with the loss of their opener, who picked up an unfortunate injury during the opening match against New Zealand, forcing him out of the tournament.
Fakhar Zaman’s Painful Exit
The injury happened in the very first over of New Zealand’s innings. Fakhar awkwardly fell while fielding and immediately had to leave the ground for medical assessment. Though he made an attempt to return, he eventually walked off again—raising concerns about his condition.
Despite the discomfort, Fakhar still came out to bat in Pakistan’s chase of 321. But it was clear he wasn’t himself. His usual attacking game was missing, and he struggled to a scratchy 24 before getting dismissed.
With his injury confirmed, Pakistan moved quickly to replace him, bringing in Imam-ul-Haq, who recently impressed in the Champions Trophy warm-up match against South Africa.
Amir’s Conversation With Fakhar
Speaking on a private TV channel, Mohammad Amir revealed that he reached out to Fakhar after hearing about the injury. Given their strong bond—having spent over a month together in the ILT20—Amir wanted to check on his well-being.
He initially asked Fakhar if the injury was related to his knee or back, but the left-hander clarified that it was a side strain—an injury that could sideline him for up to two months.
During their conversation, Fakhar also mentioned experiencing mild coughing, which worsens his pain and makes breathing difficult.
Mohammad Amir explained that side strain injuries typically take around six weeks to heal, followed by a rehabilitation phase before a player can return to full action. Even in a best-case scenario, Fakhar might only be back for the later stages of the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
This is a significant blow for Pakistan, as Fakhar was expected to play a key role at the top of the order in the Champions Trophy. Now, the team will have to quickly adjust and find a way to fill the void left by his absence.

Imam-ul-Haq Replaces Injured Fakhar Zaman in Pakistan Squad
Pakistan’s Champions Trophy 2025 squad has undergone a key change. Opening batter, Imam-ul-Haq, replaced Fakhar Zaman, who sustained an injury during their opening match against New Zealand in Karachi.
Fakhar suffered a side strain while fielding in the first over, leading to his exclusion from the tournament. The Event Technical Committee approved Imam as his replacement.
“Imam, who has played 72 ODIs, was named as a replacement after Fakhar was ruled out due to an oblique injury,”the ICC stated.
His absence is a major setback for Pakistan, especially after losing Saim Ayub to an injury as well. Zaman also took to his Instagram to express his disappointment but remained hopeful for the future.
“I have been privileged to represent Pakistan multiple times with pride. Unfortunately, I’m now out of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, but surely Allah is the best planner. I will be backing our boys in green from home,” he wrote.
With a crucial match against India on February 23, the Pakistan cricket team needs to adjust its plans if they wish to remain in the tournament.
Pakistan updated squad for Champions Trophy 2025:
Mohammad Rizwan (c), Babar Azam, Imam-ul-Haq, Kamran Ghulam, Saud Shakeel, Tayyab Tahir, Faheem Ashraf, Khushdil Shah, Salman Ali Agha, Usman Khan, Abrar Ahmed, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Hasnain, Naseem Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Vice-captain Shubman Gill’s unbeaten 101* led India to a six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in their opening Champions Trophy match in Dubai on Thursday.
Chasing the score of 229 runs, India reached the target with 21 balls to spare. Gill, who scored his second consecutive ODI century, remained steady under pressure.
“There’s a lot of experience in the dressing room to handle such situations,” said India’s captain Rohit Sharma. “KL (Rahul) and Gill stayed composed till the end.”
Fast bowler Mohammed Shami also played a key role in India’s win, taking 5-53 to leave Bangladesh struggling at 35-5. However, Bangladesh’s Towhid Hridoy (100) and Jaker Ali (68) stitched a 154-run stand to push the total to 228 runs.
India started well with Rohit Sharma (41) and Gill finding regular boundaries. Rohit, who crossed 11,000 ODI runs, fell to Taskin Ahmed, while Virat Kohli (22) was dismissed after a slow start.
With India at 144-4, Shubman Gill and KL Rahul (41*) took charge, ensuring a comfortable finish with an 87-run partnership. Rahul was dropped early, but India faced no further hurdles.
Shami, stepping in for the injured Jasprit Bumrah, gave India an early breakthrough by dismissing Soumya Sarkar for a duck. Axar Patel removed Tanzid Hasan (25) and Mushfiqur Rahim (0) in successive deliveries.
Bangladesh got some respite as Jaker and Towhid steadied the innings, and fielding lapses from India allowed them to build a partnership.
Towhid’s 118-ball knock, which included six fours and two sixes, ended before Bangladesh was bowled out.
India will face Pakistan in their next match on Sunday at the Dubai International Stadium.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is making headlines, but not just for the cricket. A controversy erupted during the India vs. Bangladesh match in Dubai when fans noticed something missing—the host country Pakistan’s name was nowhere to be seen in the tournament’s official logo on the broadcast.
As expected, speculation ran wild. Was it an oversight? A deliberate move? A controversy brewing? But before things could escalate further, the International Cricket Council (ICC) stepped in with an explanation.
What Really Happened?
An ICC official clarified that the omission was simply a technical glitch in the broadcast graphics. The spokesperson assured fans that the issue would be fixed from the next match onwards.
“The omission was due to a graphics-related technical issue, which will be rectified from tomorrow. It was not possible to change the logo during the match.”
Interestingly, the official also pointed out that Pakistan’s name was visible in the official social media clips, proving that the glitch was limited to the live TV broadcast.
Timing of the Controversy Raises Eyebrows
This explanation comes at a time when tensions around the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 have already been simmering. Just last month, reports from Indian media suggested that India’s jersey for the tournament would not feature Pakistan’s name in the logo.
That report had sparked outrage among Pakistani fans, leading to calls for action. However, the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) later clarified that it would follow ICC guidelines and sport the official tournament logo as required.
As soon as the issue surfaced, cricket fans across both countries flooded social media with reactions. While some questioned the timing of the “technical glitch,” others were quick to call for calm, waiting for the ICC’s official word—which has now arrived.
What’s Next in ICC Champions Trophy?
With the clarification in place, the focus should now shift back to cricket—where it belongs. The Pakistan-India showdown on February 23 is fast approaching, and that’s where all eyes should be.
For now, let’s hope the only glitches we see from here on out are in fielding, not in broadcasting!

Pakistan’s ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign just got a big boost. Imam-ul-Haq is set to join the squad in Dubai on Friday, right in time for the much-anticipated showdown against India on February 23.
The left-handed opener replaces Fakhar Zaman, who suffered an unfortunate oblique tear while fielding against New Zealand in Karachi on February 19. With Fakhar ruled out, Pakistan needed an experienced replacement at the top of the order, and Imam fits the bill perfectly.
A Timely Call-Up
Imam’s selection didn’t come out of nowhere as he has been performing consistently in domestic cricket. The left-hander had also featured in Pakistan Shaheens’ warm-up match against South Africa, making him match-ready for the big stage.
Not only that, yesterday after being officially named as Fakhar’s replacement, he smashed a brilliant 158 runs for PTV against OGDCL in the President’s Trophy. Talk about making a statement!
A source close to the team confirmed: “Imam-ul-Haq has been released by PTV and will travel tomorrow after a brief stay in Lahore. He will be available for selection against India.”
ODI Record of Imam-ul-Haq
If selected, Imam-ul-Haq will be making his first ODI appearance for Pakistan since the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. His numbers in the format speak for themselves:
72 ODIs
3,138 runs
48.27 average
9 centuries & 20 fifties
His ability to anchor an innings while accelerating when needed makes him a solid option at the top. Plus, his familiarity with high-pressure matches will come in handy against India.

13-Year-Old Maid Dies After Alleged Torture Over Chocolates
A couple in Rawalpindi has been arrested on suspicion of torturing and murdering a 13-year-old maid, Iqra, who was accused of stealing chocolates. The case has sparked nationwide outrage. The hashtag #JusticeforIqra is trending on social media, reigniting debates about child labour and domestic worker abuse.
Iqra had worked as a maid since she was eight. She was taken to a hospital last Wednesday with severe injuries and died shortly after. Her father, a struggling farmer, said he had sent her to work due to financial hardship. She had been employed by the couple for two years, who have eight children, earning around PKR 7,000 per month.
A preliminary police investigation revealed that Iqra had suffered multiple fractures in her legs and arms, as well as a serious head injury, indicating frequent abuse. Authorities are still awaiting the final autopsy report to determine the full extent of her injuries. The couple, Rashid Shafiq and his wife Sana, have been detained. A Quran teacher, who took Iqra to the hospital and left after falsely claiming her parents were dead, is also in custody.
This incident has drawn comparisons to previous cases of abuse against child domestic workers. Despite widespread public outrage, many such cases in Pakistan end in out-of-court settlements. Legal loopholes in our system allow suspects to be forgiven in exchange for financial compensation.
With an estimated 3.3 million children engaged in labour across the country and millions of women and girls working as domestic workers, activists are once again calling for stronger protections and justice for victims like Iqra. Her father insists that those responsible for her death must be punished.

A 38-year-old Chinese man, Sun Guo Shan, is making headlines for climbing China’s famous mountains on his hands. The former educator began his handstand climbing journey in May 2023. He aims to conquer 50 of China’s most iconic peaks by spring 2025. He describes his feat as a tribute to both physical endurance and China’s scenic landscapes.
Though he started in May 2024, Sun became famous in November after a video of him climbing Haibat, the highest peak of Wudang Mountain (1,612 meters), went viral.
The footage showed him using only his hands to ascend the steep terrain, drawing widespread admiration. “Every Chinese person has a dream of martial arts in their heart,” Sun told local media. “I want to use my special climbing method to complete the country’s 50 famous mountains this spring.”
One of his most difficult climbs was in December. He spent five hours scaling the 999 steps of Tianmen Mountain in Zhangjiajie, Hunan Province. The journey, covering nearly 300 meters with a vertical drop of 150 meters, tested his endurance. He fell nearly a hundred times before reaching the summit. “This is the 34th mountain I have challenged and also the most difficult one,” Sun said after completing the climb.

Six years after his Oscar-winning masterpiece Parasite, Bong Joon-ho returns with Mickey 17, a sci-fi that combines dark humour, social commentary and existential contemplation. Starring Robert Pattinson in a dual performance, the movie is a turbulent yet engrossing ride through the life of an “expendable” clone on a perilous space mission.
A Unique Sci-Fi Concept
The movie is set in the 2050s and revolves around Mickey Barnes, a disposable labourer on a deep-space mission to the planet Niflheim. As an “expendable,” he is assigned to carry out life-threatening tasks, aware that every time he dies, a new copy of himself will be printed to resume the mission. But then things take a turn when Mickey 18 is created by mistake ahead of Mickey 17’s demise. Now, the two clones must learn to live together—a scenario just begging for comedic and philosophical conflict.
Robert Pattinson’s Mickey 17: Charming Until It Gets Too Real
Pattinson is good in both parts, imbuing Mickey 17 with nervous, jittery energy while playing Mickey 18 with a brooding intensity. His work is the film’s best anchor, and he provides a balance of absurdity and real emotional substance.
True to form, Bong Joon-ho layers Mickey 17 with satire, challenging capitalism, identity and the meaning of life. Visually stunning, the film has a sleek, high-tech production design set against the creepy alien terrain of Niflheim. Critics have likened its themes to Snowpiercer, another Bong film that decries economic inequality through a high-concept sci-fi premise.
Mark Ruffalo is a boisterous, over-the-top Trump-like villain, and his presence contributes to the darkly comedic tone of the film. Some critics, though, think that the social commentary of the film tips too far into the preachy and the chaotic side, so it becomes scattered at times.
A Mixed but Memorable Experience
At more than two hours, Mickey 17 sometimes falters when it comes to pacing, with some scenes feeling needlessly slow. Still, the film is compelling thanks to its sassy humour, breathtaking beauty and cerebral themes. Before Mickey becomes in charge of a rebellion of gigantic alien beasts, the movie has committed wholeheartedly to its offbeat sensibility—an element that will attract viewers or confound them.

Goofy, illogical, yet irrepressibly original, Mickey 17 is a movie that resists being pigeonholed. Adore it or detest it, it’s a welcome respite from formula sci-fi—an idiosyncratic, offbeat space odyssey that lingers long after the final credit has rolled.
