The Sixth Edition Of The Effie Pakistan Jury Sessions
Effie Awards Pakistan, one of the biggest marketing and advertising awards has been consistently executing award shows and jury sessions for the past five years successfully, with this year being the sixth edition. The eligibility period was 1st July 2022 – 30th September 2023 with 482 submissions. The Jury sessions were divided in two rounds.
Round one was held virtually, where over 150 local and international jurors were invited to critically analyze the Effie cases. Round two was held on 23rd February at Movenpick hotel karachi, where the shortlisted cases were evaluated by the esteemed jury to pick the Gold, Silver, and Bronze winners. Pakistani singer Aima Baig has recently fired imitation accusations at Nehaal Naseem, also a Pakistan-based singer. In a recent podcast by Ahmed Ali butt, also known as “Excuse me with Ahmed Ali Butt” she claims “she literally like…totally copied me.” When she was requested to name overrated and underrated artists, Aima spoke plenty about how most women are underrated.

Nehaal Naseem’s career took off when an old cover went viral back in 2016. She was only 11 at the time she recorded the video and since then has debuted another cover named ‘Ijazat.’ But known best for her Coke Studio appearances, vocalist Aima Baig has stated that she sounds exactly like her.
When concluding the podcast, she began with “I like this girl very much, I count her success as mine because she copied me.” Fans have found this quite a surprising accusation coming from someone who herself has been accused of copying another singer’s style.

APNS General Council Elects New Office Bearers In Its AGM
The Annual Meeting of the APNS General Council held on March 02, 2024 at APNS House, Karachi unanimously elected Nazafreen Saigol Lakhani as President, Sarmad Ali as Secretary General, Imtinan Shahid as Senior Vice President, Muhammad Aslam Kazi as Vice President, Syed Muhammad Munir Jilani as Joint Secretary and Shahab Zuberi as Finance Secretary of the Society.
The AGM was held under the chairmanship of Mrs. Nazafreen Saigol Lakhani, President of the Society. The Council unanimously approved the report of the Executive Committee for the year 2023-2024 as well as the Annual Accounts of the Society for the year 2023.
The General Council attended by 116 members from across the country, formed an Election Commission headed by Dr. Waqar Yousuf Azeemi with Syed Irfan Shah and Zahid Hafeez as members. The Election Commission conducted the election of the Executive Committee for the year 2024-25.
Following dailies and magazines were elected un-opposed to the Executive Committee of the APNS for the next tenure:

The AGM in a resolution, expressed its profound concern on the state of print media due to the present economic situation which has caused severe financial crisis for newspapers, many of them are at the verge of collapse. In this situation, the media expected support from the government to brave the financial crunch. The AGM urged upon the new Federal Government to implement the decision of Mian Shahbaz Sharif approved in his last tenure to increase the government advertisement rates. The members in the AGM, requested the Federal and provincial governments to pay the long outstanding dues of newspaper industry, increase the quantum of advertisements and allocate a separate share of print media in the advertising budget so that the newspaper industry would be able to survive in the present situation.
The AGM in a resolution, expressed its profound concern on the arbitrary decision of the PID to remove 17 publications from the Combined Media List out of which, 11 publications are members of the APNS. The APNS condemned the above decision and requested the Ministry of Information to restore the publications on the media list.
Pepsi Zero Sugar’s Marketing Stunt Fizzled Out Faster Than Their Soda
Pepsi Pakistan’s latest marketing stunt for Pepsi Zero Sugar during PSL matches seems to have backfired terribly. Their CGI ad of a helicopter dropping a Pepsi Zero can into the stadium has landed them in hot waters, with the comments section quickly filling with hate! A fun thing to note is that Pepsi’s official page doesn’t even allow comments.
The decision to disable comments on their video raises a critical question, if Pepsi is not confident enough in their product to face even constructive criticism or they think the timing is not right, why launch it at all? “Baad mein karlete bro!”

The public’s outrage is not totally surprising. Considering the current political landscape, with tensions high and emotions simmering, It was quite predictable that “#boycottpepsi” would be the top comment on pages that posted this video, and some people even pushed the envelope and bad-mouthed the pages who posted it. However, it is surprising how Pepsi didn’t see this coming and was naive enough to post something like this.
One can’t help but wonder whether Pepsi was fully unaware of the possible negative responses. It’s as if Pepsi has been living under a rock, oblivious to many companies going through similar criticism for poorly timed marketing campaigns. Who exactly suggested the Pepsi team to create a new look and then reveal it in such a manner?
It leaves one wondering if this “new look” will change anything for them in terms of sales and consumer sentiment. With the kind of response they received, it is safe to say that their sales are not increasing any time soon (they’ll have to struggle more in competing against their rival soda drink, which has captured more than half of the market), and this little stunt might push more people to turn against the brand. So much for ‘new branding’.
Also, Pepsi seems to be lagging behind the marketing curve. This whole using CGI trend has now been done and dusted. Many other brands have already dipped their hands in this trend with more creativity. It was during the last year when we saw brands indulging in this type of marketing. Now, Pepsi, for launching Pepsi Zero with a “New Look,” took a not-so-new approach!
