Jeju Air Flight 7C101, which departed Seoul’s Gimpo International Airport for Jeju island “at around 6:37 am, returned to Gimpo at 7:25 am” was detected shortly after takeoff due to a landing gear issue.

“Shortly after takeoff, a signal indicating a landing gear issue was detected on the aircraft’s monitoring system,” Song Kyung-hoon, head of the management support office at Jeju Air, told a news conference.

“At 6:57 am, the captain communicated with ground control and after taking additional measures, the landing gear returned to normal operation. However, the decision was made to return to the airport for a thorough inspection of the aircraft.”

Local media reported that 21 passengers chose not to board an alternate flight to Jeju, citing concerns over safety. Jeju Air’s 41-plane fleet includes 39 Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

Special Inspection

Seoul said on Monday it would conduct a special inspection of all 101 Boeing 737-800 planes in operation in the country.

“We are reviewing plans to conduct a special inspection on B737-800 aircraft,” said Joo Jong-wan, head of the aviation policy bureau at the South Korean transport ministry.

Joo added that the government plans to “implement rigorous aviation safety inspections in response to the (landing gear) incidents.” In Sunday’s crash at Muan, the Boeing 737 800 carrying 181 people from Thailand to South Korea made a mayday call and belly-landed before crashing into a barrier and bursting into flames. The explosion killed everyone on board except two flight attendants who were pulled from the wreckage.

In another move to tighten its control over women’s visibility and agency, Afghanistan’s Taliban government has ordered a ban on residential windows overlooking areas commonly used by women. According to the decree announced by government spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid on social media, new buildings will be constructed without such windows and existing ones will be obstructed to block the view.

The Taliban says this action is to avoid “obscene acts.” The edict mentions courtyards, kitchens, and wells among areas to be shielded from view. Enforcing these rules is supposed to be the responsibility of the local authorities, who will reportedly inspect construction sites and existing buildings.

The holiday weekend brought impressive earnings at the box office, with Disney’s animated film Mufasa: The Lion King coming out on top for the five-day period from Christmas Day through Sunday. The movie earned an estimated $63.8 million, according to industry tracker Exhibitor Relations.

Meanwhile, Paramount’s action-comedy Sonic the Hedgehog 3 dominated the traditional Friday-to-Sunday box office, bringing in $59.9 million over the holiday period. It earned $38 million more than Mufasa for the weekend, with Sonic 3 grossing $37.1 million compared to Mufasa’s $37.1 million.

Strong Holiday Box Office Numbers

Analyst David A. Gross pointed out that the holiday weekend generated “big, although not record-breaking” box office numbers. He expects even better results in the upcoming week. Among the highlights was the new vampire movie Nosferatu from Focus Features, which impressed with $40.3 million over the five-day period and $21.2 million for the three-day weekend. Gross called the movie’s opening “excellent for a new horror film,” noting its high critical acclaim. The film is a remake of the 1922 silent classic inspired by Dracula and stars Bill Skarsgård, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Willem Dafoe, and Nicholas Hoult.

‘Wicked’ and ‘Moana 2’ Round Out Top Five

Universal’s Wicked, a musical fantasy starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, earned $31.7 million over five days ($19.5 million for three), dropping to fourth place but still performing well. The movie’s global earnings have now reached $634 million.

Disney’s Moana 2, another animated film, made $28.3 million over five days ($18.2 million for three). Although it slipped one position in the rankings, it remained in the top five for the fifth straight week.

‘A Complete Unknown’ Performs Well

Searchlight Pictures’ A Complete Unknown, which stars Timothée Chalamet as an enigmatic Bob Dylan, earned $23.3 million over the five-day holiday period ($11.6 million for the three-day weekend). Dylan has praised Chalamet as a “brilliant actor” for his portrayal in the film.

Carter was the 39th president of the United States and believed in human rights, peace, and service. His demise is said to mark an end in history for the US.

Carter’s Life and Achievements

Former peanut farmer Carter, who later became the president, served the country from 1977 through 1981. He faced many difficulties during his presidency, including an economy in turmoil and the Iran hostage crisis, but ultimately earned world recognition through his humanitarian efforts.

Carter served as the governor of Georgia and the US Navy before becoming president. He was married to Rosalynn for 77 years, with whom he had four children, 11 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. He turned 100 in October, having outlived all former presidents of the US.

After leaving the office, his repute spread thick and wide from his efforts across the globe in his drive for world peace and human rights.
