psl-10-draft-star-picks-surprises-and-the-final-squads

The wait is over! The PSL 10 draft took centre stage at the historic Huzoori Bagh in Lahore, where all six franchises finalized their squads for the upcoming season. With a mix of big names, wild cards, and some unexpected moves, the draft left fans buzzing with excitement. Let’s break it all down.

Lahore Qalandars

The two-time PSL champions stuck to their core, retaining Shaheen Shah Afridi and Fakhar Zaman in the platinum category. Their only new addition at the top level was New Zealand’s Daryl Mitchell. A safe, sensible choice, don’t you think?

Lahore also roped in Sri Lanka’s Kusal Perera for some extra firepower at the top of the order, while Asif Ali has joined the franchise to bolster the lower order. With a mix of young guns and veterans, their squad looks balanced and ready for another title run.

Squad: Shaheen Shah Afridi, Fakhar Zaman and Daryl Mitchell (all platinum), Haris Rauf, Sikandar Raza and Kusal Perera (all diamond), Abdullah Shafique, Jahandad Khan and Zaman Khan (all gold), David Wiese, Asif Ali, Asif Afridi, Muhammad Akhlaq and Rishad Hossain (all silver), Momin Qamar and Momin Azab (both emerging), Muhammad Naeem, Salman Ali Mirza and Tom Curran (all supplementary).

Karachi Kings

Karachi Kings made a splash with Australia’s veteran opener David Warner as their marquee platinum pick. Adding New Zealand’s Adam Milne and Pakistan’s rising star Abbas Afridi completed their platinum trio.

But wait, there’s more. In the supplementary rounds, they snagged Kane Williamson and Mohammad Nabi—two seasoned campaigners who could be game-changers. With a mix of experienced internationals and local talent, Karachi is banking on their depth this season.

Squad: David Warner, Abbas Afridi and Adam Milne (all platinum), James Vince, Hasan Ali, Khushdil Shah (all diamond), Shan Masood, Muhammad Irfan Khan and Aamir Jamal (all gold), Arafat Minhas (brand ambassador), Tim Seifert, Zahid Mahmood, Litton Das and Mir Hamza (all silver), Fawad Ali and Riazullah (both emerging), Omair Bin Yousuf, Kane Williamson, Mohammad Nabi and Mirza Mamoon (all supplementary).

Quetta Gladiators

Quetta surprised many by picking Faheem Ashraf in their first pick of the Platinum category after using Wild Card. They bounced back in their next two picks by roping in New Zealand’s Mark Chapman and Finn Allen, adding a touch of explosiveness.

And just when you thought they were done, they picked up Shoaib Malik in the supplementary round. Talk about adding a veteran to steady the ship! Quetta’s lineup has a mix of fire and experience, making them a team to watch.

Squad: Finn Allen, Faheem Ashraf and Mark Chapman (all platinum), Abrar Ahmed, Mohammad Amir and Rilee Rossouw (all diamond), Akeal Hossein, Mohammad Wasim Jr and Saud Shakeel (all gold), Khawaja Nafay, Usman Tariq, Haseebullah Khan and Khurram Shahzad (all silver), Kyle Jamieson and Hasan Nawaz (both emerging), Mohammad Zeeshan, Danish Aziz, Kusal Mendis and Sean Abbott (all supplementary).

Peshawar Zalmi

Zalmi kept it simple, focusing on quality over quantity as they used the right-to-match option to pick Tom Kohler-Cadmore, a proven match-winner, in the platinum category. With Babar Azam already in their ranks, this duo could light up PSL 10.

They added three exciting players, who can turn up the PSL 10 with their brilliance. Local power-hitter Abdul Samad was picked in gold alongside Bangladeshi speedster Nahid Rana.

Meanwhile, South African all-rounder Corbin Bosch was picked in Diamond. They may not have made flashy moves, but their lineup is quietly strong.

Squad: Babar Azam, Saim Ayub and Tom Kohler-Cadmore (all platinum), Mohammad Haris, George Linde and Mohammad Ali (all diamond), Hussain Talat, Nahid Rana and Abdul Samad (all gold), Arif Yaqoob, Mehran Mumtaz, Sufiyan Muqeem and Najibullah Zadran (all silver), Ali Raza and Maaz Sadaqat (both emerging), Ahmed Daniyal and Alzarri Joseph (both supplementary).

Multan Sultans

The Sultans stayed true to their reputation of thinking outside the box. They picked New Zealand all-rounder Michael Bracewell in platinum, followed by Mohammad Hasnain and Kamran Ghulam in the gold category. A perfect balance, isn’t it?

Their supplementary picks included Johnson Charles and Yasir Khan, giving them depth in both batting and bowling. With Mohammad Rizwan leading the charge, the Sultans are ready to chase another final spot.

Squad: Mohammad Rizwan, Usama Mir and Michael Bracewell (all platinum), David Willey, Iftikhar Ahmed and Usman Khan (all diamond), Chris Jordan, Kamran Ghulam and Mohammad Hasnain (all gold), Faisal Akram, Akif Javed, Gudakesh Motie, Josh Little and Tayyab Tahir (all silver), Shahid Aziz and Ubaid Shah (both emerging), Muhammad Amir Barki, Johnson Charles and Yasir Khan (all supplementary).

Islamabad United

United made waves by picking Australia’s Matthew Short in platinum alongside their retained stars, Shadab Khan and Naseem Shah. The diamond category saw them snapping up West Indian all-rounder Jason Holder, joining Azam Khan and Imad Wasim in the category.

Rounding off their squad with experienced campaigners like Colin Munro, Rassie van der Dussen, and Sam Billings, Islamabad looks like a team that can go all the way.

Squad: Shadab Khan, Naseem Shah and Matthew Short (all platinum), Azam Khan, Imad Wasim and Jason Holder (all diamond), Haider Ali, Salman Ali Agha and Ben Dwarshuis (all gold), Colin Munro, Rumman Raees, Andries Gous, Mohammad Nawaz and Salman Irshad (all silver), Hunain Shah and Saad Masood (both emerging), Rassie van der Dussen, Alex Carey, Sahibzada Farhan, Riley Meredith and Sam Billings (all supplementary).

2024 Confirmed as the Hottest Year on Record

Source: UPI

The Earth’s surface temperatures in 2024 broke all records, making it the hottest year since global record-keeping began in 1880, said NASA scientists. Temperatures reached as high as 2.30°F (1.28°C) above the agency’s 20th-century baseline (1951–1980), making it a critical wake-up call on climate change.

A Streak of Record-Breaking Heat

The 2024 temperature spike follows an unprecedented 15-month heat streak beginning in June 2023. For much of the year, global temperatures consistently exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels, a critical threshold highlighted in the Paris Agreement. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson described the situation as a “shattered record,” underlining the growing consequences of climate change, from intensifying wildfires to extreme weather events.

Source: Nasa

Rising Greenhouse Gas Emissions

NASA scientists attribute this warming trend to heat-trapping gases like carbon dioxide and methane. Atmospheric carbon dioxide levels have risen from 278 parts per million in pre-industrial times to about 420 ppm today. Record increases in carbon emissions from fossil fuel consumption in recent years have compounded the acceleration of the warming trend.

El Niño, a natural climate phenomenon, also contributed to the temperature rise in 2024. Its strong resurgence at the end of 2023 has enriched global warmth levels; however other factors such as the 2022 eruption of Tonga’s volcano and reduced pollution may have impacted temperature anomalies.

Effects of Global Warming on the Local Front

The warming’s impacts are now being felt on a level more localised than in the past: “When changes happen in the climate, you see it first globally, then regionally, and now at the local level,” said Gavin Schmidt, director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies. In many areas, it has presented as intense precipitation, heat extremes, and growing flood damage – real-life experiences with climate change.

Data in Action

NASA’s analysis uses data from tens of thousands of meteorological stations worldwide, in addition to sea surface temperature data from ships and buoys. Independent studies by NOAA, Berkeley Earth, and other international agencies all confirm the same alarming trend: the last decade has been the warmest on record.

As Earth inches closer to Pliocene-era warmth, when sea levels are already significantly higher, NASA and other organisations underscore the crucial need for immediate action. Miracle House Survives LA Fire: How did it Happen?

Miracle

The Los Angeles wildfires have destroyed thousands of homes, leaving communities in ruins. Pacific Palisades, known for housing mega-celebrities, saw entire neighbourhoods reduced to ashes. Over 10,000 buildings burned, and at least 180,000 people evacuated. The fires claimed 11 lives and caused over $150 billion in damages, making it one of California’s worst disasters. Amid this devastating destruction, a single house in Pacific Palisades survived. Surrounded by charred remains, it stands as a rare miracle. Actor James Woods and retired executive David Steiner shared emotional accounts of their homes defying the flames while others were lost.

A Miracle Amid the Chaos

The Oscar-nominated actor James Wood believed he had lost his newly renovated home to the raging flames. He described the scene as chaotic and terrifying. He recalled when he and his family evacuated with nothing but the clothes on their backs. “There was so much chaos. It was like an inferno,” Woods stated during a CNN interview. Moreover, he added that every house around his was on fire.

The actor shared on X that his home miraculously survived despite its destruction. He also recounted rescuing his 94-year-old neighbour with dementia during the evacuation, showing the community’s resilience amidst the disaster.

Similarly, David Steiner, a retired waste-management executive, was convinced his $9 million mansion was lost. Flames and smoke surrounded his property, and neighbours’ homes were nothing but ashes. Yet, when David received updates, he was shocked to learn his three-story structure had withstood the flames. “It’s a miracle—miracles never cease,” Steiner said, describing his home as an example of hope.

Miracle Malibu Mansion Survives Wildfire
Miracle Malibu Mansion Survives Wildfire

How Did The “Last House Standing” Survive?

The secret to David Steiner’s home’s survival lies in its ultra-sturdy construction. Designed with earthquakes in mind, his property featured fire-resistant materials like stucco and stone and a fireproof roof. The foundation includes pilings that reach 50 feet into the bedrock, adding exceptional stability. These design features originally meant to safeguard the property from seismic activity and crashing waves, inadvertently protected it from the firestorm.

Experts say building homes like this could be a smart way to protect against wildfires in the future. However, these kinds of materials and designs are extremely expensive. That means not many would be able to afford them, leaving most homes at risk when disasters like the Pacific Palisades fire strike.

The wildfires have left a heavy toll on the community. Reports estimate that 11 people have died, 10,000 buildings have been destroyed, and $150 billion in economic losses have occurred. While the fires may have taken much, they also reveal the miracles that emerge from preparation and hope.

Bangladesh Eases Visa Process for Pakistanis

In the first five months of the 2024 fiscal year, exports to Bangladesh rose to $314 million, with imports remaining low at $31 million.

Bangladesh made the visa process for Pakistanis easier to make trade and economic relations between both countries better. This was said by Iqbal Hussain, the Bangladeshi High Commissioner to Pakistan, during a Saturday meeting with businessmen of the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry, LCCI.

“Pakistani heads of missions do not need clearance from Dhaka anymore to get their visas,” he added.

Focus on Trade and Investment Growth

Mr. Hussain stressed that trade and investment were among the synergies between Pakistan and Bangladesh. He mentioned that it would require efforts by LCCI to reach this goal.

He also mentioned that the relationship between the two countries in the last decade had not been the way it was expected to be.

Untapped Trade Potential

Mr. Hussain emphasised how trade between Bangladesh and Pakistan, with a population of more than 180 million, is completely unused and suggested that it be put to good use by Pakistan.

Call for Regional Cooperation

The High Commissioner underscored the need for regional cooperation and commended the efforts of Dr. Mohammad Yunus, chief adviser to the interim government of Bangladesh, for his role in advocating South Asian cooperation.

He encouraged the countries of South Asia to come together once again and revitalise the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC). He pointed out that, despite the advances made globally in regional cooperation, South Asia has quite a few challenges that demand collective solutions.

Responsibility to Build Opportunities

Mr. Hussain highlighted the fact that both governments need to provide opportunities to this new generation. Removing barriers to trade and cooperation is essential in this context. He further advised LCCI to play a pioneering role in strengthening business relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Current Trade Data and Future Goals

The LCCI president, Mian Abuzar Shad, made known the trade statistics between both countries: The trade volume recorded between them in the year 2023-24 was $718 million in both their directions. Pakistan exported goods worth $661 million to Bangladesh, while imports stood at $57 million from Bangladesh.

In the first five months of the 2024 fiscal year, exports to Bangladesh rose to $314 million, with imports remaining low at $31 million.

Plans to Increase Trade Volume

Mr. Shad expressed a strong desire to increase two-way trade to $2 billion soon. He urged both governments and the private sector to take decisive steps to achieve this target. He suggested focusing on sectors like information technology, pharmaceuticals, rice, surgical instruments, processed foods, automotive parts, and sports goods.

This simplified visa process marks a positive step toward stronger ties between Pakistan and Bangladesh. With mutual efforts, both countries can unlock significant trade potential and strengthen regional cooperation.

Cold Wave and Strong Winds Hit Karachi as Temperature Drops

Cold Wave and Strong Winds Hit Karachi as Temperature Drops

Karachi is enduring an intense cold wave, with the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) forecasting strong winds and dry, chilly weather over the next 24 hours. The lowest temperature has been recorded at 10.5°C, and the city is expected to see temperatures range between 9°C and 11°C. Chief Meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz stated that the cold wave is expected to persist until January 17, with strong winds likely hitting the city in the afternoon.

Meanwhile, Karachi’s air quality has taken a turn for the worse, with the city ranking as the third most polluted in the world, according to IQAir. The Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 234 and is classified as “very unhealthy.” The concentration of toxic PM2.5 pollutants has reached 159 µg/m³, which is 31.8 times higher than the World Health Organisation’s recommended guidelines.

The worsening air quality can be linked to the city’s cold weather, as the low temperatures trap pollutants closer to the ground, exacerbating smog and pollution issues. Karachi is not alone in its pollution woes. Lahore also recorded an AQI of 162, classified as “unhealthy.” These ongoing air quality concerns highlight the persistent environmental challenges encountered by both cities.

How to Stay Fit in Ramadan?

Ramadan brings with itself a variety of delicious yet extremely unhealthy foods. While pakoras and samosas are everyone’s favourite, lets not forget that staying healthy is essential too. From eating healthy in suhoor and iftar to staying hydrated, getting enough sleep and managing your activity levels, you must keep an all-rounded approach in Ramadan.

It’s More than Fasting

Ramadan is the time of the year when Muslims from all over the world come together to pray, fast and help the less fortunate. In this month, the Devil is chained and every good deed is multiplied by many folds. It is the month of forgiveness as evidenced by its three Ashras: Rehmat, Maghfirat and Nijaat.

Petrol and Diesel Prices Likely to Rise from January 16

Petrol and Diesel Prices Likely to Rise from January 16

The government, led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, is expected to raise petrol and diesel prices from January 16, 2025. Reports indicate that the price hike could be between Rs 3 to 5 per litre, driven by a surge in global crude oil prices. Crude oil prices have recently hit a three-month high, with Brent crude futures rising 0.35% to $77.32 per barrel, marking the third consecutive weekly increase.

Experts suggest that the rise in global oil prices is due to concerns over potential supply disruptions during the winter and growing energy demand. These factors are pushing crude prices to increase, leading to rising pressure on the government to adjust local fuel prices accordingly.

The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has proposed the new rates, which are awaiting final approval from the Prime Minister and Finance Division. Once approved, the new prices are expected to take effect on January 16. This increase follows a recent price adjustment on January 1, when petrol prices were raised by Rs 0.56 to Rs 252.66 per litre and high-speed diesel prices were increased by Rs 2.96 to Rs 258.34 per litre.

Khabib Kicked Off Flight After Confrontation with Airline Staff

Khabib Kicked Off Flight After Confrontation with Airline Staff

Khabib Nurmagomedov was removed from a Frontier Airlines flight travelling from Las Vegas to San Francisco. He was flying out to support his teammates at UFC 311. The former UFC lightweight champion was seated in the emergency exit row, but the flight crew raised concerns about his ability to assist in an emergency, despite him being cleared for the seat during check-in. This led to a tense confrontation with the airline staff.

The issue escalated when a member of the airline staff, whom Khabib described as “very rude from the very beginning,” insisted that he move from his seat. Khabib, fluent in English, refused to change his seat, stating that he was capable of handling the responsibilities of the emergency exit row. However, Khabib was escorted off the plane after the situation continued to heat up.

In a post on social media, Khabib explained the incident, expressing confusion over the airline’s behaviour. He wrote: “Lady who comes to me with questions was very rude from the very beginning, even though I speak very decent English and can understand everything and agreed to assist, she still insists on removing me from my seat.” He added, “What was the base for that, racial, national or other one, I’m not sure. But after 2 minutes of conversation, she called security and I was deplaned from this aircraft. After 1.5 hours I boarded another airline and left for my destination. I did my best to stay calm and respectful as you can see on the video. But those crew members could do better next time and just be nice with clients.”

The incident sparked outrage in the MMA community, with many figures showing support for Khabib. UFC legend Daniel Cormier commented, “That’s really bad.” While other fighters like Michael Chandler and Belal Muhammad expressed disbelief at the situation. Khabib’s coach, Javier Mendez, also defended him, stating, “He deserves an apology from whatever airline he was ejected from. The man speaks English well and there is not a more capable person on that plane to help others in an emergency situation than the man that was sitting in that exit row seat.”

Hasbulla, the internet sensation, also shared his frustration with a simple two-word response. Many in the MMA community have called for a boycott of Frontier Airlines. With some even vowing never to fly with the airline again. The situation has also sparked a broader conversation about potential racial or national bias and the treatment of high-profile individuals. Despite the incident, Khabib managed to board another flight and continue his journey to UFC 311.

The PSL 10 draft is just around the corner, and Sarfaraz Ahmed, a name synonymous with Quetta Gladiators, has officially closed the door on his nine-year journey with the franchise. For fans, it’s the end of an era, and for Sarfaraz, it’s a bittersweet farewell.

In a heartfelt statement, the former Gladiators captain shared his gratitude. “My time with Quetta Gladiators has come to an end. I feel very proud that my nine years with this amazing team have been wonderful and beautiful,” he wrote.

He thanked team owner Nadeem Omar, the management, and particularly Azam Khan for their unwavering support throughout his tenure.

A Legacy to Remember

Sarfaraz Ahmed wasn’t just another player for Quetta; he was the face of the franchise. He led the team to their maiden PSL title in 2019, a victory etched in the memories of every Gladiators fan. Across 86 matches for the team, the wicketkeeper-batter scored 1,525 runs at an average of 29.32, including seven half-centuries.

From the league’s inception in 2016 to his recent departure, Sarfaraz stood as a pillar of consistency and leadership. Even when the Gladiators struggled in recent seasons, his commitment never wavered.

But every story has its twists, and the Gladiators decided not to retain Sarfaraz for PSL 10. While team owner Nadeem Omar hinted at picking him in the draft, Sarfaraz’s emotional announcement confirmed that his chapter with Quetta had officially ended.

Karachi Kings Rumors: A New Home or Just Speculation?

With Quetta now in the rearview mirror, many speculated that Sarfaraz might join his hometown team, Karachi Kings. It seemed like a natural fit—returning home to represent Karachi in what could be the twilight of his PSL career.

However, sources close to the Kings have poured cold water on those hopes. According to reports, the Kings don’t have Sarfaraz in their plans for now. This development leaves fans wondering: where will the former Pakistan captain land next?

What Lies Ahead?

For the first time since PSL’s inaugural edition, Sarfaraz will enter the players’ draft without a team. It’s a strange sight for someone who’s been a PSL stalwart.

The wicketkeeper-batter still has plenty to offer, both as a leader and a player. Whether it’s mentoring younger players or providing stability in the middle order, Sarfaraz’s experience makes him a valuable asset.

But where will he go? Could a different franchise see the value in his leadership and pick him up? Or will Sarfaraz take a step back from the PSL spotlight?

Ahmed Shehzad Calls Out PCB Over PSL 10 Draft Controversy

ahmed-shehzad-calls-out-dhoka-cup-selection-process-ahmed-shehzad-calls-out-pcb-over-psl-10-draft-controversy

Ahmed Shehzad has once again made headlines—but not for stepping onto the field. Instead, he’s taken aim at the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for including his name in the local category of the PSL 10 draft. The twist? Shehzad retired from the Pakistan Super League in 2023.

He didn’t hold back while sharing his frustrations on his YouTube channel. “PSL 10 is going to happen, and interestingly, it seems like I’m part of it too. Are you happy now with the hype?” he said, clearly annoyed.

Shehzad believes this move by the PCB is nothing but a publicity stunt. He accused the board of using his name to create pre-tournament buzz. “Why don’t you talk about the players you’ve been favoring for the last four or five years?” he questioned, not mincing words.

Not Backing Down

The right-handed batter addressed rumors head-on, clarifying he hasn’t had a change of heart about his retirement. “I want to address the misunderstanding among my fans. I am not available for PSL 10, and I haven’t withdrawn my retirement,” he stated firmly.

Ahmed Shehzad also expressed his disappointment with the PCB’s handling of merit in Pakistan cricket. He revealed that his decision to leave the league stemmed from frustration over the prioritization of connections over talent.

“My decision to leave PSL was about principles. Merit has been ignored, and domestic players have been sidelined for years,” he explained.

A Misunderstanding or a Deliberate Move?

The 33-year-old emphasized that neither he nor his agent submitted his name for the PSL 10 draft. “The PCB decides which local players to include in the draft, not me. Including my name without consent is purely for cheap publicity,” he added.

Ahmed Shehzad’s words weren’t just directed at clearing the air—they were a direct critique of the PCB’s practices. He labeled them “blind and foolish,” accusing them of using players as tools to market the league.

As Ahmed Shehzad distances himself from PSL 10, the draft is still moving forward. It’s set to take place at Huzuri Bagh in Lahore, with franchises preparing to finalize their squads.

“Paris, We’re Coming Today” PIA’s Tone Deaf Advertisement Shows Jet Flying into Eiffel Tower

PIA's Tone Deaf Advertisement Shows Jet Flying into Eiffel Tower

Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has resumed its flights to Europe after a four-year hiatus. This significant event has marked a milestone for the national flag carrier, especially since the airline was suspended from operating in Europe due to concerns over compliance with international aviation standards. However, what’s causing a stir is how PIA chose to advertise its first flight to Paris after all this time.

On Friday, PIA posted an image on X (formerly known as Twitter) featuring a plane heading towards the Eiffel Tower. The caption alongside read: “Paris, we’re coming today.” Shortly after, the post caught the attention of netizens, who were visibly concerned because it resembled the 9/11 attack.

Soon after, Pakistani PR expert and former political adviser Omar R. Qureshi took to X and slammed the ad, quoting it as “completely tone deaf.” He also added that the advert left him “truly speechless.”

“Did the idiot who designed this graphic not see a PIA plane heading for the Eiffel Tower? One of Europe’s iconic landmarks. Do they not know about the 9/11 tragedy – which used planes to attack buildings? Did they not think that this would be perceived in similar fashion?” he posted.

Is All Publicity Good Publicity?

If we go by the old books, bad publicity is still publicity. The ad, because of its unusual and outrageous nature, caught the attention of media all over the world. International news channels covered how PIA messed up big time, but simultaneously, everyone was talking about the airline they had once forgotten about.

One user posted on X, saying: “Let’s be honest, without the terrible design of their post, none of us would even know that PIA is flying to Paris now.”

Netizens took to the internet, responding to PIA’s post in what could only be considered some of the most hilarious responses the internet has seen in a while. Some of them deserve a special mention:

“They already lost Notre Dame once – now you’re taking the Eiffel Tower away?” wrote one.

Another posted a picture of Osama bin Laden with the caption “Newly hired Graphic Designer at PIA.”

While some might take offence, let’s be honest: the internet is savage when it needs to be.

This is Not the First Time

If you think this is the first time PIA has messed up with its advertisement, you’re wrong. The Arline has a history of controversial advertisements. Following the recent post, users on X shared a similar, or even worse, PIA ad from the 1970s. This ad depicts a shadow of a PIA plane over the Twin Towers in New York City. Since the 9/11 attack, this design is considered highly insensitive. Even though the advertisement came long before the September 11 attack, the context has made it a source of controversy.

After the backlash, PIA deleted its post from X and apologised, saying it was an unintentional coincidence. As we head into 2025, we can only hope that PIA makes better, more informed decisions because if they don’t, the internet is always here to give them a reality check.
