Are Gen Z Better at Work-Life Balance?

Gen Z Work Life Balance

Gen Z is emerging to be a strong advocate for a better work-life balance, although they’ve just entered the work field. They are pushing for a healthier, more sustainable approach to work. In contrast to the previous generations, they are putting mental health and leisure time first and rejecting conventional ideas of long hours, work, work and work.

Gen Z Advocates for Work-Life Balance

Hate them or love them, Gen Z is actively reshaping how we think about work, career goals, and personal well-being. They are the first generation to grow up in a world of rapid technological change, social media, and an increased awareness of mental health, as well as the analogue lifestyle. They’ve seen the best of both worlds, which has led them to seek a healthier, more sustainable approach to their professional and personal life.

Redefining Work-Life Balance: Evolution and Priorities

The Rise of Work-Life Balance

Previous generations, such as the Baby Boomers and Millennials, thought that working overtime and burning themselves out indicated that they were not only professionally successful but they were also a great employee if they worked more than everyone else. However, Gen Z is approaching work from a very different perspective. They are promoting a well-rounded strategy that enables them to have a fulfilling personal life in addition to professional success.

This thinking or perspective has changed due to the mental health crisis that has gained more attention in recent years, as well as learning from their parents that over-working themselves would not be really rewarded in the long run. Studies show that compared to earlier generations, Gen Z is more likely to report mental health issues like anxiety, depression, and burnout, they’ve made stress management, mental health, and self-care a top priority.

Speaking Up

This generation is vocal and hands-on about the need for employers to offer more remote work opportunities, flexible schedules, and supportive work environments that allow them to grow both professionally and personally. They really understand the value of time, self and technology, seeking a balance that motivates them to be productive without sacrificing their well-being and personal time.

Mental Health and Well-being

Previous generations who truly believed in the slogan ‘work comes first.’ And that’s what they did, neglecting themselves, their families, and most importantly their health; both mental and physical health. Mental health is another critical aspect of the work-life balance debate for Gen Z. They’re vocal about mental health support and the importance of stress, burnout, and emotional exhaustion, unlike the older generation that took everything that they got.

Work Life Balance and Mental Burnouts - Why it is Important to Change the Culture in Pakistan

Change in Pakistan: Slow but Steady

Many of the biggest, most successful companies in Pakistan, are scrambling to change their company cultures to appeal to their new batch of interns or associates. Some of whom are demanding shorter hours, four-day work weeks and strong commitments to paperless and sustainable environments.

They prefer changing jobs frequently to job stability and have a desire to share assets and own less rather than aspire to the traditional goal of owning a house and luxury goods.

Salman Shahid, founder of the Pakistani company ‘Gray Matter Global’, expresses that the new generation of workers in Pakistan is still looking for conventional jobs, instead of pursuing their entrepreneurial ventures. However, he asserts, that the degrading economic conditions are forcing the youth to look for other sources of income. Shahid says that the verdict of becoming ‘your own boss’ started as a joke, but it is now becoming a reality. Young people prefer internships and freelancing because of the flexibility in working hours and reducing their travel expenses due to working from home and with relatively good pay.

According to Mikaal, between 2007 and 2009, the industry was transitioning from traditional platforms to digital media, which made it challenging for most aspiring musicians like him.

Living the Dream

Though Mikaal never became a full-time musician, he found his dream fulfilled in a shocking yet fortunate turn of events. He enthusiastically recalls the time he performed live alongside the ultimate Pakistani rockstar, Ali Azmat and vividly remembered. “I have been fortunate enough for all of that,” he claimed. However, there is something about singing live that appeals to him, though he prefers it more with a guitar.

A Love for Music Lives On

Lahore Smog and it’s Future Implications

Source: Daily Ashraf

Lahore, once renowned for its vibrant culture, is now infamous as one of the world’s most polluted cities. This November, its Air Quality Index (AQI) soared to a hazardous 700, well beyond the “hazardous” threshold of 300, posing severe health risks. Schools have implemented new timings, cancelled outdoor activities, and moved assemblies indoors to safeguard children. Yet, these measures offer only temporary relief from a problem that endangers millions.

The Toll on Health and Environment

The smog crisis primarily results from vehicle emissions, industrial pollution, and crop residue burning. Experts warn that prolonged exposure can lead to respiratory diseases, cardiovascular issues, and reduced life expectancy. For children and the elderly, the risk is even higher. A 2022 study revealed that over 128,000 Pakistanis die annually from air pollution-related causes, with urban centres like Lahore bearing the brunt of it.

Lockdown in Lahore and Multan as govt declares 'all-out war' against smog - Pakistan - Dunya News
Source: Photonews

Other Cities at Risk

While Lahore dominates the headlines, other cities like Faisalabad and Karachi are also grappling with deteriorating air quality. Faisalabad frequently features among the world’s most polluted cities, and Karachi’s industrial zones contribute to poor air conditions. Without comprehensive action, the problem threatens to engulf the entire nation.

The smog crisis highlights broader failures in environmental governance. Farmers lack affordable alternatives to stubble burning, while public transportation remains underdeveloped. Cities like New Delhi, which are facing similar issues, have initiated collaborative approaches like subsidising eco-friendly machinery and investing in renewable energy. However, Pakistan’s steps—like Anti-Smog Squads—remain piecemeal.

Hope for the Future

In order to secure a cleaner future for coming generations, Pakistan must prioritise green energy, stringent industrial regulations, and public awareness campaigns. Tree plantation initiatives, such as the urban forests in Karachi, offer hope but require scaling across the country. Regional cooperation with neighbouring nations could help tackle cross-border pollution, emphasising shared technology and resources.

Pakistan's smog is visible from space. This activist is 'frustrated' but won't give up : Goats and Soda : NPR
Source: NPR

The smog that is choking Lahore and other cities is more than a seasonal inconvenience—it’s a clarion call for urgent, sustainable reforms. Without decisive action, future generations may inherit not the vibrant culture of Punjab but an environment unfit for human habitation.

Aaqib Javed Appointed Pakistan Head Coach For Champions Trophy 2025

aaqib-javed-pcb-pakistan-head-coach-champions-trophy-aqib

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has made a bold move by appointing former fast bowler Aaqib Javed as the interim head coach of the Pakistan men’s cricket team. His tenure will stretch all the way to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, giving the former pacer a chance to leave his mark on one of cricket’s most competitive tournaments.

For Aaqib, this isn’t uncharted territory. His coaching resume is impressive, and his love for the game is evident in the success stories he’s been a part of. But will this seasoned campaigner bring the spark Pakistan needs?

Read More: SCG Museum Adds Mohammad Rizwan’s Gloves And Shirt To Collection

Aaqib Javed’s Coaching Experience

Aaqib Javed is no stranger to Pakistan cricket. Fans remember him not just for his fiery bowling spells but also for his contributions as a coach. He was part of the coaching setup when Pakistan clinched the ICC T20 World Cup in 2009—a memory etched in every fan’s heart.

But his achievements don’t stop there. He played a vital role in leading the Pakistan U-19 side to a World Cup win in 2004. And let’s not forget his time with the UAE team, where he helped them earn ODI status and qualify for the ICC World Cup 2015.

Earlier this year, he also worked with the Sri Lanka men’s team as their bowling coach. This extensive coaching background gives Aaqib a unique edge. He knows how to handle pressure, develop young talent, and build a winning team—a combination Pakistan desperately needs heading into the Champions Trophy.

While Aaqib’s role is labeled “interim,” it’s far from a stopgap measure. His responsibilities don’t just end with coaching the team. He’ll also continue serving as a senior member of the National Selection Committee, giving him significant influence over team dynamics.

In the meantime, the PCB will be searching for a permanent white-ball head coach, aiming to finalize the appointment post-Champions Trophy. This leaves Aaqib in an interesting position. If he can deliver results, who’s to say he won’t be the front-runner for the permanent role?

The Road Ahead

Pakistan’s schedule is packed, and Aaqib has no time to ease into his new role. The team is gearing up for a busy winter, with white-ball series against Zimbabwe and South Africa in November and December.

Read More: What’s at Stake for Pakistan Football? Understanding the PSB-PFF Conflict

Then comes the big test—a triangular series involving New Zealand and South Africa right before the Champions Trophy.

And let’s not forget that Aaqib’s journey won’t be a walk in the park. He inherits a team with unresolved questions. The resignation of Gary Kirsten left a void in the white-ball coaching department. Meanwhile, Jason Gillespie’s role as the red-ball coach is under scrutiny due to strained relations with the PCB.

As Aaqib steps in, he’ll have to navigate these complexities while focusing on the bigger picture—helping Pakistan dominate in the Champions Trophy and beyond.

With a user base growing by approximately one million new sign-ups daily, Bluesky recently surpassed 16.7 million users. But what makes it stand out in a saturated market of social platforms?

What is Bluesky?

Bluesky mimics X in terms of functionality, offering familiar features such as posting, commenting, and liking. However, its standout feature is decentralisation. Unlike traditional platforms, Bluesky enables users to host their data on independent servers rather than relying on a centralised corporate database. This model empowers users to maintain greater control over their online presence. Additionally, Bluesky supports custom domains, offering a layer of personalisation beyond standard usernames like “.bsky.social.”

The Story Behind Bluesky

Founded in 2019 by former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, Bluesky was originally conceptualised as a decentralised offshoot of Twitter. Although Dorsey played a key role in its development, he stepped down from Bluesky’s board in May 2024 and later deleted his account. Today, Bluesky operates as a US public benefit corporation under the leadership of CEO Jay Graber, emphasising its commitment to ethical social networking.

Bluesky’s recent surge in popularity stems from both dissatisfaction with X and a desire for a more user-centric platform. Elon Musk’s controversial political alliances and relaxed content moderation policies have driven users away from X. High-profile endorsements from celebrities like Lizzo and Ben Stiller and Bluesky’s top-ranking position in app stores have also contributed to its rapid growth.

How Does Bluesky Make Money?

Currently, Bluesky avoids traditional advertising, focusing on paid features like custom domain usernames to generate revenue. The platform may explore subscription models or other innovative revenue streams as its user base expands.

Despite its impressive growth, Bluesky faces challenges. With an active user base significantly smaller than X’s 250 million daily users, it has a long way to go to rival its predecessor. Its financial sustainability is also under scrutiny, mirroring early concerns faced by platforms like Twitter.

Bluesky’s rise signals a growing appetite for decentralised, user-focused platforms, offering a glimpse into the future of social networking. Whether it can sustain this momentum remains to be seen.

It wasn’t the happiest night for Rizwan’s team, as Pakistan fell short by 13 runs. But off the field, Rizwan made a gesture that went beyond the game itself, earning admiration from cricket fans around the world.

A Priceless Addition to the SCG Museum

Jason Gillespie To Coach Pakistan In South Africa, But For How Long?

video-of-pakistan-head-coach-jason-gillespie-goes-viral-pcb-likely-to-appoint-a-local-head-coach-for-all-formats

Jason Gillespie is staying on—for now. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has confirmed that the former Australian pacer will continue as head coach for Pakistan’s upcoming two-match Test series against South Africa. But beyond that? It’s anyone’s guess.

Gillespie’s contract technically runs until 2026, but the PCB has been oddly quiet about his future. After South Africa, Pakistan hosts the West Indies for another two-Test series, but there’s no confirmation if Gillespie will still be in charge. It’s a bit of a limbo situation, and fans can’t help but wonder what’s next for the team’s coaching setup.

Rumors and Realities

The cricket rumor mill had been buzzing recently about Aaqib Javed  potentially replacing Gillespie. Some whispers even suggested Aaqib might step into the vacant white-ball coaching role, a position left empty since Gary Kirsten’s resignation last month.

The PCB addressed the rumors with a clear statement: “As announced previously, Jason Gillespie will continue to coach the Pakistan side for the two red-ball matches against South Africa.” Short and sweet, but it didn’t address the elephant in the room—what happens after?

Coaching Drama: A Pay Cut and Power Struggles

Gillespie’s stint with the PCB hasn’t been all smooth sailing. His relationship with the board hit a rough patch recently, especially after some of his responsibilities were quietly trimmed. Once part of the selection committee, Gillespie was removed and now has no say in squad selection—a move he says blindsided him.

“When I came on board, I was told there was a long-term plan,” Gillespie shared in a recent interview. “It wasn’t what I signed up for, I’ll be completely honest.”

To make things worse, the PCB approached Gillespie about taking on the white-ball coaching role but didn’t offer a pay increase for the extra work. Unsurprisingly, Gillespie declined.

Aaqib Javed in the Wings?

As Gillespie navigates these challenges, Aaqib Javed’s name continues to surface. Reports suggest that Aaqib has been offered the white-ball coaching job, potentially through the Champions Trophy. Local names like Azhar Mahmood and Saqlain Mushtaq were also in the mix but didn’t get much traction.

For now, Gillespie will focus on South Africa, but the tension behind the scenes is hard to ignore. His reduced authority and the PCB’s lack of clarity about his future suggest that a change might be on the horizon.

What’s at Stake for Pakistan Football? Understanding the PSB-PFF Conflict

what-at-stake-for-pakistan-football-psb-pff-conflict

Pakistan football finds itself entangled in a governance crisis that has far-reaching implications for the sport’s development in the country. At the heart of the dispute is the tension between the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) Normalization Committee (NC), appointed by FIFA in 2019 to resolve long-standing issues within Pakistan’s football ecosystem.

With both sides accusing each other of overreach, the question arises: what’s at stake for Pakistan football? Let’s break down the ongoing conflict and its implications.

The Genesis of the Normalization Committee

In June 2019, FIFA’s Bureau of the Council established the Normalization Committee to address the stagnation in Pakistan football, which had been in limbo since 2015. A joint FIFA/AFC fact-finding mission had concluded that only free, fair, and transparent elections could restore unity among football stakeholders.

The NC’s primary mandate was:

  1. Managing PFF’s daily affairs.
  2. Ensuring proper club registration and scrutiny.
  3. Drafting and ratifying an electoral code with FIFA and AFC’s guidance.
  4. Organizing district and provincial elections.
  5. Conducting elections for the new PFF executive committee.

While the NC was to act as a transitional body, its role was designed to be strictly temporary, with an original timeline of nine months. However, more than five years later, the NC is still at the helm, and tensions between stakeholders have only escalated.

PSB’s Allegations: Mandate Overstepped?

The PSB has raised serious concerns over the NC’s recent actions, particularly its decision to convene an extraordinary Congress meeting to amend the PFF Constitution. In its letter addressed to NC Chairman Haroon Malik, the PSB criticized these amendments as overstepping the NC’s transitional role, describing them as efforts to establish policymaking authority rather than focusing on facilitating elections.

Key points of contention include:

  • Constitutional Amendments: Changes such as those proposed to Article 38 are seen as a deviation from the NC’s primary goal of restoring democratic governance. Critics argue that these amendments could undermine transparency and inclusiveness.
  • Extraordinary Congress Meeting: The PSB has labeled the NC’s move to call a Congress meeting as unconstitutional, particularly given the absence of a recognized PFF President and notification of elected provincial office-bearers.
  • Conflict of Interest Allegations: Haroon Malik’s portrayal of himself as PFF President and allegations of using constitutional amendments to make himself eligible for election have further fueled mistrust.

These accusations suggest a lack of accountability and transparency, eroding the trust of clubs, players, and stakeholders who had pinned their hopes on the NC.

The NC’s Perspective: FIFA’s Backing or Overreach?

From the NC’s standpoint, its actions are aimed at addressing structural deficiencies within Pakistan football. FIFA and AFC delegations’ involvement in the upcoming Congress could indicate that these amendments align with international governance standards. However, the lack of clear communication and stakeholder engagement has left room for skepticism.

what-at-stake-for-pakistan-football-psb-pff-conflict

While the NC’s defenders might argue that reforms are essential for modernizing football governance in Pakistan, the perception of unilateral decision-making has alienated key sections of the football community.

Implications for Pakistan Football

This power struggle is not just a bureaucratic tussle—it directly affects the future of football in Pakistan. Here’s what’s at stake:

  1. Delayed Elections: Prolonging the normalization process means football in Pakistan remains stuck in limbo. Clubs and players suffer as resources are diverted toward administrative disputes rather than grassroots development.
  2. FIFA’s Oversight: If FIFA perceives the NC as ineffective or the PSB as overbearing, it could lead to sanctions or even suspension. Such a scenario would further isolate Pakistan from international football.
  3. Loss of Trust: Both local stakeholders and international observers are likely to lose confidence in the process, jeopardizing long-term reforms.

The Way Forward: A Call for Collaboration

To resolve this crisis, a collaborative approach is essential. The NC must prioritize transparency and inclusivity, engaging stakeholders in meaningful dialogue to rebuild trust. Simultaneously, the PSB must support, rather than undermine, efforts to restore democratic governance within the PFF.

FIFA, as the overseeing authority, also has a critical role to play. Ensuring accountability and adherence to the NC’s original mandate is essential to avoid further delays and controversies.

Pakistan football stands at a crossroads. With the PSB and NC locked in conflict, the dreams of countless players, fans, and stakeholders hang in the balance. Restoring unity and focusing on the sport’s development should be the ultimate goal, as the country cannot afford to let administrative battles derail its footballing aspirations.
