I am a Lahori and I can proudly say that I am a die hard foodie! Desserts hold a special place in my heart and I can’t even begin to imagine having a hearty meal without something sweet to end it with. If you have the very same issues, then you and I are on the same boat my friend and its time to look at the best places for desserts in Lahore.

There is something about their desserts that just keep forcing my hand, even when I am on the strictest of diets. I absolutely love their dessert menu and they make it all the more enticing by presenting it in a very remarkable manner. Their molten lava cake that is escorted by a scoop of vanilla ice cream is my personal favorite.

This global name has just recently opened a branch in Lahore and we are definitely excited. If you love chocolate and can’t live without coffee, this is a place that you MUST visit.

Their menu boasts an extensive list of savory treats using coffee and chocolate as their main components.

A branch of the American franchise; serves some of the most innovative flavors and creations. Even though they seem like just an ordinary ice cream parlor, let me assure you they are far more than that. I love their new take on ice cream flavors; they are certainly the first of their kind in Pakistan. Their names alone will pique your interest for sure!

Chaman Ice cream is a very well-known name amongst foodies in Lahore and who can blame them? Their Ice creams are absolutely superb and I love their ice creams that are embellished with multiple assortments like nuts. Another thing that I really find commendable is the number of ice cream flavors that they have. You’ll have a hard time deciding which flavors to choose for now and which to ignore for later.

Okay, okay, seems a bit unfair to mention this restaurant amidst these names but you’ll understand what I am talking about once you try their brownie with ice creams. It is heavenly, what’s more? I love the serving size; extremely generous. Since its economical it won’t dent your pockets, but it is an excellent dessert to invest in for sure.

Microsoft Introduces New SQL Server to Linux for Open Sources

According to Microsoft’s announcement on their official blog post,

“SQL Server enables developers and organizations to build intelligent applications with industry-leading performance and security technologies using their preferred language and environment. With the next release of SQL Server, you can develop applications with SQL Server on Linux, Windows, Docker, or macOS (via Docker) and then deploy to Linux, Windows, or Docker, on-premises or in the cloud.”

This means that the new versions of SQL Server will be available to the public on both Linux and Windows platforms, this is the first time that Linux has received SQL Support since the launch of the platform.

Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation said, “Microsoft is better able to collaborate with the open source community to deliver transformative mobile and cloud experiences to more people.” Google is also keen to have a portion of that pie and is officially becoming a member of the .Net foundation.

Mövenpick Hotel Karachi Reopens Art Gallery Exhibiting Work of Young Artists

Undoubtedly there is no lack of talent in Pakistan. Our country is full of brilliant and bright minds, art is no exception, and we have been blessed with some fine artists who have proved themselves all across the world.

The volatile and radical environment that we live in has directly affected the prosperity of art industry. It has reduced the development which has created quite a lot of problems for young, aspiring artists to prove themselves to the world.

Mövenpick Hotel Karachi has taken this initiative to flourish the work of young, aspiring artists by helping them showcase their work to the world. The hotel has created a central location, at the heart of its mezzanine floor where it will display the work of 17 young artists from 15th November to 28th November. The exhibition will continue for 14 days to give these artists a chance to attract as many spectators as possible.

The name of Mövenpick Hotel Art Gallery’s inaugural show, “Impact”, was a reflection of its vision; that viewers must leave impacted. Fatima Sabeekah metamorphoses humans into maggots, linking their selfish natures. Mahwish Ehsan uses geometrical shapes and transforms them into contemporary art; her installation comments on how geometry subconsciously impacts the human mind and how it goes unnoticed. Jamal Ashiqain captures the impact of nature over man-made structures.

 

Safwan Islam also photographs nature and particularly looks into reflections. Attia Rashid personally connects with the term “nostalgia” in her work. Ahsan Mohiuddin works with graphite to comment on choices and their influence over life and Radia Durrani personalizes the same concept with an experience.

Jumana Tayyebi takes on a personal representation of The School of Athens and Fatema Mandviwala brings the beauty of Saddar, Karachi to the gallery. Maryam Zaidi experiments with metaphors to depict positive and negative vibes. Alina talks about bullying and the impact it had on her in her childhood. Saad Irfan, a concept artist, displays a character he designed and Sana Nezam has produced a portrait of Rumi.

Faizan Tariq digitally manipulates his photographs to emphasize on the otherwise insignificant. Zehra Fatima comments on the need for positivism and acceptance. Zeenat Rizvi’s visually appealing and conceptual work focuses on the brain, neural wiring and lin­­ks it with personal experiences. Sara Pagganwala’s “One Pound Fish” deals with the issue of confrontation of self-identity and suggests that an identity is given to you by others based on how they see you.

An array of mixed emotions thought-provoking statements and beautiful imagery formulated the art show that had its viewers thinking as they drive home.

The event was inaugurated by a famous international art critic, Marjorie Husain. All the top executives of corporate, consulate and state individuals attended and applauded the event. “This is a very good initiative by the hotel which would help to strengthen and grow our art industry providing young artists a platform,” said Marjorie Husain, Art Critic.

Researchers Claim More Than 700 Million Android Devices are Sending Secret Messages

Android users may be in hot water, according to researchers, over 700 million Android phones are secretly sending data to China without the consent of the owner. They also claimed that these phones send data in a span of 3 days, and it’s possible that you are one of the victims.

This is possible because these Android phones have a back-door, which then sends call logs, SMS messages, contact list, location history and app data to China every 72 hours. This was discovered by researchers at Kryptoware, the reason behind this is the firmware code in these phones is developed by a Chinese firm called Shanghai AdUps Technology.

This tech is usually found in Android phones manufactured by companies like Huawei, ZTE, and even the popular brand QMobile. These companies  also sell their phones in various countries all over the world. Whereas QMobile has its sets assembled in China, making those sets exposed to the risk even more. However, authorities are still unsure whether it only sends data for advertisement purposes or as government surveillance by China.

Backdoor Capabilities

There are several accounts of information a backdoor can give a company or intelligence using the data access too… some of these include the following operations and commands without user permission:

  • Update the phone’s firmware and re-program the device.
  • Update or Remove apps.
  • Execute remote commands with elevated privileges on the user’s device.
  • Download and Install apps without the user’s consent or knowledge.
  • Collect and Send user personally identifiable information (PII) to AdUps’ server every 24 hours.
  • Collect and Send the smartphone’s IMSI and IMEI identifiers.
  • Collect and Send SMS texts to AdUps’ server every 72 hours.
  • Collect and Send geo-location information.
  • Collect and Send call logs to AdUps’ server every 72 hours.
  • Collect and Send a list of apps installed on the user’s device.

So far, the backdoor which was discovered have been found by two names, com.adups.fota.sysoper and com.adups.fota, users can now modify or delete the file(s).

Kryptoware notified Google, AdUps and Amazon, which exclusively sells the BLU R1 HD phone which also contains the backdoor. To this, Google and AdUP’s gave their official responses, Google said that it is working with affected parties to patch the backdoor but they do not know how widely AdUps has distributed their software in Android phones. Whereas, AdUP’s claimed its software was not intended to be included on smartphones sold in America and is only designed to help Chinese smartphone makers to monitor user behavior.

1st Pakistan Film Festival to take Place in New York

The Pakistani film industry has come a long way- it is now holding its very first film festival in New York and we are more than ecstatic! Organized by the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations, the event will take place on the 3rd of December and last till the 4th.

Maleeha Lodhi is responsible for the international expansion of Pakistan’s film industry in collaboration with UN Pakistan.

FBR Extends Income Tax Return Deadline

According to a new notification by FBR, the deadline for Income Tax Returns has been extended by a span of 15 days. Thus, the last date to submit all income tax returns is now 30th November 2016. The new deadline applies on final tax regime, business individuals, association of persons, salaried individuals, and companies falling under special tax year.

Originally the last date was August 31st. This was moved to September 30th and recently to October 31st, however because tax payers did not comply with the given dates, it has now been extended, which is now a usual practice y FBR.

For Individuals, Get Registered Online with FBR’s E-Enrollment System

As of November last year, FBR issued an SRO that stated that a filer can use their CNIC number as NTN (National Tax Number) without the need to go through additional hassles related to registering the NTN . This development has taken the sting out of registering as a tax payer in Pakistan. Here’s how you can register as one:

  1. You’ll have to get your Registration Number and password first via FBR’s e-Enrollment process. To do that, click here to get to the main page of Iris, FBR’s simplified ERP system for tax payer registration.iris.fbr.gov.pk-screen-1
  2. You’ll need to go to ‘Registration for Unregistered Person’ if you’re a first time user. Provide the information required.You’ll be sent a confirmation input to validate your account (usually an email and/or SMS). You’ll be sent password/PIN to login with your account. Sometimes this process might take a few days for security reasons.iris.fbr.gov.pk-screen-2
  3. Once you’re registered successfully and have logged in by entering your Registration No. and password on the main page of Iris, you can now file your wealth statement.
  4. For salaried persons, you will have to fill wealth statement and income tax returns. The procedure for filling out your details for wealth statement income tax returns are present here.

Things to note:

The UserID for Iris is your Registration Number as follows:

  • In case of individual Pakistani – the 13-digits on CNIC/NICOP (without dashes)

  • In case of AOPs/Companies – the 7-digits NTN (excluding dash and check digit).

For Companies and AOPs, NTN Registration is Required

If you are a company/AOP, you can register for NTN (National Tax Number) online. (It’s preferable to use Internet Explorer to do this; there will be problems with Chrome and Mozilla Fox)

  1. Visit the link e.fbr.gov.pk and select the tab E-registration.
  2. Mention your CNIC Number, name and load image
  3. Give your date of birth as per CNIC, your residential address, your activity, land line, mobile number and email address
  4. Since you are filling in the form yourself select the ‘Authorized Representative u/s 172 and then select ‘Self’
  5. Click on ‘Save Registry’
  6. Then in the next column, mention your employers NTN and city of your employment if you are an employee. If a businessman, fill in the details of your business as well.
  7. Your application is complete. Click on ‘Print’ to get a print of the application and sign it.
  8. It will alert you if there is an existing NTN from your previous job. If you still have doubts, use your CNIC number to get it.
  9. You will be allotted an NTN after 2 working days via an email.
  10. Meanwhile, enclose a paid electricity bill, salary certificate and copy of CNIC with the printed application and take it to your concerned RTO office. You will be issued the NTN certificate.

Derived from the seeds of a plant, yet sadly not a vegetable, chocolate is available in many different forms today. We see it being presented in a variety of different desserts from cakes to pies to macaroons, and even in savouries such as chocolate pasta, yes, that is a thing.

Vintage & Classic Car Club Pakistan Holds 7th Annual Classic Car Rally Show in Lahore

On November 16, The Vintage & Classic Car Club of Pakistan (VCCCP), held the annual Lahore show as part of the Classic Car Rally Show from 11 AM to 5:30 PM on Wednesday, 16th November 2016 at the Lahore Polo Club. The rally commenced from Karachi on 11th November and is scheduled to end in Peshawar on 20th November.

At the event, more than fifty vintage and classic cars from all across Pakistan were showcased. Among the participating vintage and classic car, models ranged from the 1950s to 1980s. Of particular attraction to attendees were 1957 Austin Healey, the oldest car at the event; 1949 MG Y, 1976 Cadillac Eldorado and 1986 Jaguar XJS, 1989 Ferrari, 1971 Rolls Royce, 1967 Mercedes Convertible.

It also included the 1973 Mercedes Convertible, 1969 Alpha Romeo, 1960 Alpha Romeo Spider, MG TC, MG BGT, BMW 2002, Triumph Spitfire and more. Among the cars showcased was also the Daimler Limo used popularly by the Queen of England. The event was well-attended by socialites, media & car enthusiasts.

Speaking about the event, Mushahid Shah, President of the VCCCP – Lahore Chapter said, “We, at VCCCP, are avid lovers of vintage and classic cars. We began this organisation with the hope that we would be able to provide a reliable platform for people to showcase their collection of cars and for our patrons to be able to enjoy viewing these cars and learning more about their history and journey. Since the inception, we have managed to successfully keep this vision alive by hosting numerous events throughout our journey. This is our 7th consecutive year hosting the VCCCP car rally and we hope to continue this tradition with the same passion in the future.”

The Vintage & Classic Car Club of Pakistan (VCCCP) is the only club in Pakistan that acknowledges and pays homage to the automobiles of the bygone era and endeavours to create a common platform for classic car enthusiasts. The club has been known to have organised numerous motoring and social events for its members creating awareness for vintage cars.

The gorgeous Pakistani starlet Mawra Hocane has never backed down when it is about her country being made the target of mockery by outside parties. The actress recently shunned all jokes about Pakistan being made in the upcoming Bollywood movie TumBin 2.

In light of the Uri Attacks of September 18th, Bollywood decided to let go of all the Pakistani actors following the constant pestering and threats by Indian extremist parties. However, Indian filmmaker Anubhav Sinha has crossed all boundaries by taking a direct hit at Pakistanis in his upcoming Bollywood film Tum Bin 2.

In a Tum Bin 2 promo released recently, Bollywood actor Aditya Seal and Meher Vij are arguing on the phone over a Pakistani guy and the dialogues that have been used by Aditya are outrageous! They can be heard mouthing the following dialogues in the controversial scene:

“Mahawl toh pata hai wahaan ka. Kabhi yaha bomb phat rahe hai kabhi waha”.

“Pakistan mein ladke hai bhi kahan? Aadhe toh cricket khelte hai aur baaki ladkon ka kuch thik nahi hai.”

Anubhav defended the anti-Pakistan stunt that he pulled and said, “Whenever there is tension between India and Pakistan, every industry in our country responds to the situation differently, and Bollywood has always taken a rather rational approach. But, I had written the dialogues, which are humorous with an underlying message, much before the tension escalated.”

The filmmaker put his foot down and decided not to erase ANY scenes from the movie. “I have said what I wanted to very blatantly. I have not done anything to sensationalize and I don’t think I need to worry. Once people watch the film, they will understand the context of those lines.”

It is sad and atrocious to see how Pakistan, who itself is victimized by terrorism, is being portrayed in such negative light in Bollywood movies now.

The episode we had all been waiting for finally hit our television screens on Saturday and left us all in awe! The drama finally connected the dots where the trailer had left us hanging and it is safe to say that just as we predicted, Khuda Mera Bhai flaunts an extraordinary plot and a powerful storyline. With a slow start to the show, the latest episode highlighted some vital issues wth stellar performances and superb direction skills.

The drama has finally brought to light the most tabooed topics of intersex children- something never brought to light before for fear of being scorned by the society.

The latest episode explored in detail, the very emotions that the family felt upon having to welcome a transgender child into their family. The inspiring thing about this episode is that it explored the emotions of just about every member of the family that was affected by the birth.

Her dialogues are crisp, harsh, and extremely direct! She opens the young couple’s eyes to the staunch reality that they must face. I found her character’s reaction completely on point- this typically highlighted how remorse times brings out the worst in people.

A scared mother-in-law who felt vulnerable to the unforgiving clutches of the society that would forever judge her and her family for welcoming a transgender baby within their midst, even if the baby was her own blood and flesh. Isra Ghazal’s flaunted some mind-blowing acting skills.

This is another extremely pragmatic point that the drama has portrayed. It speaks volumes of the very difference between a father and a mother. It explores the feelings that the two individuals have over the birth of a child. Where the mother develops a deep bond with her baby and herself long before the baby is born, a father needs time to develop that bond.

As seen in the drama, the father refuses to even hold the baby. He feels no love for the child and by the end of the episode, he feels no remorse in giving the baby up to the transgender clan.

4. A mother’s everlasting love

The drama explores how a strong-headed and independent woman such as Mahagul was so deeply shaken by the birth of her transgender baby that she could not fathom the courage to resist her family who wanted her to give up on her baby.

Throughout the drama we have seen her as the epitome of justice and strength, to see her in such a heart-wrenching condition was quite out of the ordinary during this drama series.

5. The constant battle between abandoning or giving up on their own flesh and blood!

Here we see a stark reality that the society imposes upon families. Ayesha Khan played the part of a grieving mother quite well. We are shown how indecisive and reluctant she actually was when she was asked to give her baby in the hands of Hijra community. By the end of the episode, we see that the separation from the baby and the guilt of giving up on her son had taken a huge toll on her health.

What will Happen Next?

Steering us away from the cliched and sappy romantic tales, Khuda Mera Bhi Hai did hit the right chord, but did it deliver what it promised? Not yet. What will happen next is what we all can’t help but wonder?

Will Mahi take a stand for her own child or will she be backed down by the society? Will the intersex child be brought up by the Hijra community and not accept her own mother once he grows up? Let’s wait and watch.

With this new development comes the guest user- this means that a Skype Call can now be made regardless of the Skype application being downloaded. It does not even require account registration.

With many competitors such as WhatsApp entering the market of video calling, it is not surprising that Skype has tried to up its game. WhatsApp recently introduced its new video-calling feature, which will surely threaten Skype’s already fallen ratings.
