Welcome to our exclusive interview with Ali Belgaumi, the brilliant mind behind the financial success of Grey Group, one of the leading advertising agencies in the world. As the Chief Financial Officer, Ali’s strategic prowess and financial acumen have played a crucial role in propelling Grey Group to new heights.

With an impressive track record and a deep understanding of the dynamic advertising landscape, Ali Belgaumi offers us a glimpse into the inner workings of Grey Group. In this candid conversation, we explore the man behind the numbers, his insights on the industry, and his vision for a thriving and innovative future for Grey Group. So, let’s dive into the world of advertising finance with Ali Belgaumi.

Ariba Raza: As the Chief Financial Officer of Grey Group for International Markets, how has advertising changed over the years?

Ali Belgaumi: Advertising has evolved significantly in recent years; driven by the rise of digital media and the increasing sophistication of consumers. Investment in digital advertising continues to grow exponentially across the international markets and is seen as an effective way to target consumers more efficiently. In addition, we have seen a move to more data driven activities as data becomes more readily available. In more recent years, Influencer Marketing has gained significant popularity as Brands partner with social media influencers to promote their products.

AR: What shifts do you anticipate in the future?

AB: The use of Artificial Intelligence in advertising will likely reshape the industry in coming years. As AI becomes more ubiquitous, its use in creating more targeted and personalized campaigns will increase as well.

AR: How has OpenAI influenced creativity and talent acquisition in the advertising sector? What are the current technology spending trends in the advertising industry and what areas do you expect to see significant investment and growth in the future?

AB: OpenAI’s tools and technologies can be used to generate text, translate languages, and write different kinds of creative content. In addition, AI can be used to analyze data and identify potential customers to create personalized ads that are more likely to be relevant and effective. OpenAI’s machine learning has the potential to improve the way that advertising is measured and evaluated to track effectiveness of advertising campaigns, and it can also be used to identify which ads are most likely to drive conversions. In terms of technology spending trends, I foresee investment in data, personalized advertising, and harnessing the power of AI. The recent partnership between WPP and Nvidia to build AI tools is testament to the increasing importance of AI in providing digital content more effectively and efficiently.

OPPO Tops China, Ranks Fourth Globally In H1 2023 With Find N2 Flip Success

On August 4, 2023, in Lahore, boosted by the strong performance of its Find N2 series and Find X6 series flagship smartphones, OPPO ranks first in the Chinese smartphone market in H1 2023 and fourth globally during the same period.

According to data from Canalys, OPPO held a 10% share of the global smartphone market in H1, with 51.9 million shipments, and an 18% share of the China smartphone market in H1 2023, making it the best-selling brand in China during the first half of the year.

OPPO’s performance has been driven in part by the success of foldable smartphones, which have entered a period of rapid growth this year and continue to show significant upside potential. Counterpoint Research estimates that global shipments of foldable smartphones are expected to grow at a 114% compound annual growth rate from 2019 to 2025, increasing fourfold between 2022 and 2025 to reach 55 million units. Chinese OEMs, including OPPO, have been quick to embrace the foldable market, contributing to China’s emergence as the global leader with a 26% share of the market in 2022.

New data from Canalys also shows that OPPO held a dominant 31% share of the foldable market in China during Q1 2023, making it the leader in the growing segment. At the product level, the OPPO Find N2 Flip outperformed all other foldable products to make up 15% of foldable smartphone sales in China from January to May 2023, according to Counterpoint. As the first vertical flip phone to introduce a larger cover screen, the Find N2 Flip is crafted for practicality and enjoyment for daily use, featuring a less-visible crease, a powerful battery, and an intuitive UI design alongside other industry-leading innovations. These innovations and the commercial success of the Find N2 Flip have also helped OPPO to outperform the global foldable market this year, where its market share has increased from 5% in Q1 2022 to 13% in Q1 2023, according to Canalys.

OPPO remains committed to driving the growth of the foldable smartphone market and enhancing the user experience through its continued focus on technical innovation.

Finance Pros : Rebound in Confidence Stalled, No Downturn Yet

Lahore on August 04, 2023, the latest economic conditions survey from ACCA and IMA of accountants and CFOs across the globe suggests that the sharp rebound in global confidence in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has ended.

Ongoing aggressive interest rate hikes by central banks, and China’s weaker-than-expected economic recovery, have likely weighed on confidence, offsetting any benefit from receding fears of a global banking crisis and falling inflation.

There is no evidence that a global recession is on the cards though. Sentiment at the global level remains around its long-term average, as do the key New orders, Capital expenditure, and Employment indices.

There were some notable regional trends. Confidence fell sharply in Asia-Pacific and export-sensitive Western Europe. But confidence in North America actually rose for the fourth consecutive quarter, with gains in the New orders, Capital expenditure, and Employment indices. This would suggest that the U.S. economy may continue to defy predictions of a recession.

It is somewhat surprising that the aggressive monetary tightening has not had a material impact on the GECS “Fear’’ indices which reflect respondents’ concerns that customers and/or suppliers may go out of business. Both these indices continue to improve (see chart below), which suggests little concern about the impact of higher interest rates, recession risks, or the growing number of bankruptcies.

Of course, it may just be a case of calm before the storm, as the lagged effect of tighter monetary policy works its way through the global economy and financial system. Indeed, our indices measuring global problems accessing finance and securing prompt payment both deteriorated in 2Q, although neither looks particularly worrying yet by historical standards. Meanwhile, the percentage of global respondents concerned about increased costs declined slightly again, although it remains very elevated by historical standards, suggesting that central banks may have more work to do.

Rashid Khan, ACCA’s campaign manager in Pakistan, said: “The second quarter economic conditions survey from ACCA and IMA of accountants and CFOs across the globe suggests that the sharp rebound in global confidence in the aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has ended. There is little evidence that a global recession is on the cards though. From Pakistan’s perspective, the sharp decline in confidence in the important Western European and Asia-Pacific markets is of some concern. However, the resilience of the US economy, its largest single export market, is a key positive. Going forward, external developments will remain very important for the Pakistani economy, both through trade and financial channels.”

Jonathan Ashworth, Chief Economist at ACCA, said: “The survey aligned with my sense of how things are developing in the global economy, with some loss in momentum through 2Q. Things don’t look particularly alarming though, and a global recession does not look imminent. By region, things aren’t looking that great in Asia-Pacific and Western Europe. Chinese policymakers may need to increase policy stimulus, while the ECB and BoE might want to tread carefully with monetary tightening. In contrast, the U.S. economy is looking pretty resilient, suggesting the Fed may be able to carry off the much talked about soft landing”.

Dr. Susie Duong, Director of Research at IMA, said: “Looking at the change in the GECS Confidence Indices over the year, one notable factor is the resilience of North America. With a stronger than expected growth of the U.S. economy in 2023 Q2, it suggests that an imminent recession for the U.S. does not seem likely this year, although Asia and Europe could increasingly become a drag if growth decelerates significantly there. The robustness of the global ‘fear’ indices is also unexpected. However, it’s less clear that will still be the case at the turn of the year.”

Nose-Pickers At Increased COVID-19 Risk

Hold onto your noses, guys! A weird study from Amsterdam University Medical Centers has discovered a crazy link between nose-picking and the risk of catching COVID-19. Yes, you heard that right! Turns out that healthcare workers who are nose-pickers have a way higher chance of getting the virus than other people do. First off, who comes up with such crazy but stupid theories. Secondly, how is this even a thing?

Back in 2019, when COVID-19 took over the world unexpectedly, health authorities rushed to find ways to stop its wild spread. They tried everything from keeping a safe distance to strict hygiene rules in hospitals. But guess what? Healthcare workers still faced a higher risk of getting COVID-19. And here’s where things get funny because this hilarious study suggests that everyday habits like nose-picking could be part of the problem! I don’t have anything against nose-picking because everyone does it but if it’s habitual then its not only disgusting but also dangerous now.

The Study

A bunch of researchers asked over 400 healthcare workers at Amsterdam University Medical Centers about their personal quirks. They wanted to know all about nose-picking, nail-biting, wearing glasses, and having a beard. A whopping 85 percent of the healthcare workers confessed to being dedicated nose-pickers, doing it anywhere from once a month to every single day. Ewww!

And here’s the crazy part, the data showed that those who picked their noses a lot had a much higher chance of getting COVID-19 compared to the non-pickers. Oh, and they made sure to rule out other factors like being around COVID-19 patients. It was all about nose-picking! But wait, there’s more! The scientists think that when you pick your nose, you might be letting the virus sneak in through your hand and take over your nose, which then acts like an entrance for COVID-19.

Now, don’t worry if you’re a nail-biter or glasses-wearer. The study found no funny but dangerous business going on with those habits. In fact, they think nail-biters might have some secret weapon in their spit that keeps the virus at bay. This research might sound like a joke, but it’s serious stuff.

It gives us fresh insights into how our everyday quirks can play a big part in spreading COVID-19, especially in places like hospitals where the risk is high. So, remember to keep those fingers out of your nose, practice good hygiene, and stay safe out there! It’s the little habits that can make all the difference in this never-ending battle against the pandemic.

Nokia Revives The 90s Nostalgia With Updated ‘Dumb’ Phones

Nokia Revives The 90s Nostalgia With Updated 'Dumb' Phones
Source: Gadget Match

Nokia, a renowned brand in the telecom business, has undergone a transformation in recent years. While it no longer competes in the premium sector, Nokia remains a popular choice for many customers, especially in developing markets, with its lineup of affordable feature phones. These so-called “featureless phones,” which were once considered relics of the past, have found a new purpose as second phones, offering users a simple and long-lasting communication device.,

The Revenue Shift to Affordable Devices

The company’s most significant revenue now comes from its affordable devices, particularly the feature phones. Despite the rapid advancement of smartphones, many customers still opt for these basic handsets as their secondary mobile devices. These feature phones serve specific needs, such as extended battery life and basic functionality, making them practical for those seeking a reliable and straightforward communication tool.

Introducing the Nokia 130 and 150

Nokia’s latest additions to its lineup of inexpensive handsets are the Nokia 130 and 150, designed to refresh the brand’s offering in the feature phone segment. However, fans might find the naming of these phones somewhat confusing, as this is the third model introduced by Nokia with the name “Nokia 150.”

Source: BBC news

Nokia 150: Modern Design and Reliable Features

The 2023 Nokia 150 features a more modernized design compared to its predecessors, but the changes are primarily on the exterior. The phone sports a small 2.4-inch QVGA display, a VGA main camera, and a decent 1,450 mAh battery. This battery promises up to 20 hours of talk time or an impressive 30 days of standby time. While the Nokia 150 is limited to 2G connectivity, it still offers essential features like an audio jack, FM radio, and microSD card support (up to 32GB).

Nokia 130: A Refreshed Classic

Similarly, the Nokia 130 is a refreshed version of the Nokia 125, another affordable feature phone launched in 2020. Nokia has previously released two other models with the name “Nokia 130” in 2014 and 2017. The most apparent design change in the 2023 Nokia 130 is the addition of a large speaker around the torch on the back of the phone. However, what might come as a surprise to some users is that the Nokia 130 does not have a camera, not even a low-resolution one. Other than the absence of a camera, the specs are similar to those of the Nokia 150, with a focus on simplicity and reliability.

Perks of Budget-Friendly Feature Phones

One of the most attractive aspects of these feature phones is their budget-friendly price, likely to be around $50. Considering their affordability, they offer a few significant advantages that cater to specific user needs. The most notable advantage is their long battery life, making them ideal for users who prioritize uninterrupted communication on the go. Additionally, the IP52 water and dust resistance feature adds a layer of durability to these devices, ensuring they can withstand certain environmental challenges.

The Continuing Relevance of Affordable Feature Phones

While the smartphone market continues to dominate the telecom industry, Nokia’s focus on affordable feature phones remains relevant, particularly in markets where basic and reliable communication tools are in demand. The Nokia 130 and 150 demonstrate the brand’s commitment to offering cost-effective devices that cater to the specific requirements of users who value simplicity, extended battery life, and essential features. As Nokia continues to evolve its product lineup, the popularity of its affordable feature phones suggests that there will always be a place for these reliable and straightforward devices in the market.

Major Cardiac Hospital In Pakistan Suspends Heart Surgeries

Following heavy monsoon rains that caused sewerage water to seep into the operation theatres, the Punjab Institute of Cardiology (PIC) has unfortunately suspended open heart surgeries. Dr. Javed Akram, the caretaker health minister, made this announcement during a press conference at PIC.

The closure aims to conduct a third-party infection audit to address the issue. Out of nine operation theatres, seven were already closed, leading to dangerous delays for cardiac patients awaiting open heart surgeries. With only two theatres functional, the waiting list has now been growing rapidly. Unfortunately, these two theatres have also been closed down for infection audits, making the situation worse.

PIC

PIC hospital has played a crucial role in helping multiple heart patients by providing comprehensive and specialized cardiac care for a long team. Their skilled team of cardiologists, surgeons, and healthcare professionals have worked tirelessly to diagnose and treat various heart conditions.

From routine check-ups to advanced surgeries, the hospital offers a wide range of services made to each patient’s unique needs. Cutting-edge technologies and state-of-the-art equipment aid in accurate diagnosis and effective treatments. Additionally, the hospital emphasizes preventive care, offering lifestyle guidance and educational programs to promote heart health within the community and now it is sadly losing all of this and more.

Why?

The recent closure was necessary due to a high infection rate, and the government has been actively taking daily samples to ensure patient safety. Dr. Javed Akram explained that previously, PIC conducted 12-14 open heart surgeries daily. Two theatres have now been made functional after being cleared of infection, and the remaining theatres will reopen once they are declared infection-free. However, it’s concerning that no surgeries have been performed at PIC for the past three days, indicating the situation may be more complex than expected.

Relocation of Patients

To accommodate PIC patients, two operation theatres at Jinnah Hospitals have been designated for surgeries. The PIC authorities are working diligently to resolve the infection issue and restore the regular functioning of all theatres as soon as possible. This suspension highlights the importance of timely measures to ensure patient safety and smooth medical facility operations.

As the world’s largest producer of palm oil, Indonesia aims to expand the use of this vegetable oil in fuels, seeking to decrease its reliance on costly fossil fuels. This year, the country increased the mandatory mix of palm oil in biodiesel to 35%, the highest globally, up from 30% last year.

Here’s Why You Should Stop Wearing Old Contact Lenses

Here's Why You Should Stop Wearing Old Contact Lenses

If you’re one of the millions of people who wear contact lenses, you might have committed some cardinal sins when it comes to their care. From sleeping with them in to not properly washing your hands before inserting them, or even reusing them past their expiry date, these habits can lead to serious consequences for your eye health. While it might seem like you’re saving money by extending the life of your contacts, the truth is that using old lenses can be more unhygienic and risky than you realize.

Checking for expiry

Identifying unusable contact lenses is relatively simple. Just take a look at the box or packaging for the month and year printed on it. For instance, if it says 06/23, it means the contacts are safe to use until the end of June 2023. Using them any month later could put your eyes at risk of infection or other complications.

What to not do

Wearing excessively used contact lenses can lead to several red flags that should not be ignored. Symptoms like initial burning, stinging, and redness are common indicators that your contacts might be past their prime. If you experience any of these symptoms, ophthalmologist Dr. Yuna Rapoport recommends removing the contacts immediately and using preservative-free artificial tears.

One of the most significant risks of using old contacts lies in the solution they’re stored in. Even though they may still be sealed, the solution might no longer be effective, which can harbor dangerous bacteria and fungus. This can lead to severe eye infections like bacterial keratitis, causing redness, sensitivity to light, pain, and blurred vision. In more severe cases, it may lead to permanent vision loss or the need for a corneal transplant.

Outdated Prescription Dangers

Using contacts can also lead to outdated prescriptions. It’s essential to get a new prescription annually to ensure you’re wearing the correct lenses and avoid issues like blurry vision, eye strain, and headaches. Presbyopia, which affects older individuals, can exacerbate these problems if not properly addressed.

Dry eyes are another concern when using worn out contact lenses. As contacts lose permeability over time, they can reduce oxygen flow to the eyes, making them feel dry and uncomfortable. Dry eyes are not only uncomfortable but can also increase the risk of eye infections and corneal ulcers, especially for those with pre-existing dry eye conditions.

Discard regulalrly

To maintain healthy eyes and proper contact lens care, it’s crucial to discard lenses promptly and adhere to a regular replacement schedule. Washing hands before handling contacts and using lubricating drops before inserting or removing them can also contribute to maintaining good eye health.

The convenience and comfort of contact lenses should never come at the cost of compromising eye health. Using worn out contacts can lead to serious consequences, including infections, dry eyes, and vision problems. Always adhere to the recommended replacement schedule and consult your eye care professional if you experience any discomfort or changes in your vision. Your eyes deserve the best care possible, so never compromise on your eye health and keep checking up on your contact lenses.

Expected Price Of iPhone 15 Series In Pakistan With Taxes

Expected Price Of iPhone 15 Series In Pakistan With Taxes
Source: Phoneworld

The iPhone 15 series, a highly anticipated successor to the iPhone 14, is set to make its grand entrance with four models: the standard version, a Plus model, and two more advanced pro models. As the world awaits the release, speculations and rumors have already begun to surface, leaving tech enthusiasts eager to discover the next big leap in Apple’s smartphone technology.

Introducing USB-C port

One of the significant rumors swirling around the iPhone 15 series is the potential switch from the traditional lightning port to the more universal USB-C port. This move could simplify charging and data transfer processes for users, but it might require new accessories for those accustomed to the lightning connector.

Another interesting rumor pertains to the processor choice. While Apple has been developing its own chips for its devices, there’s speculation that the iPhone 15 series might feature Qualcomm chips instead. The reason behind this change is a possible delay in Apple’s in-house chip production, leading the company to opt for Qualcomm chips temporarily.

The Island feature

In terms of camera and display upgrades, Apple has always been committed to enhancing user experience. The Dynamic Island feature, highly regarded in previous models, is expected to be retained, providing users with exceptional photo and video capabilities.

As the buzz around the features and specs continues to grow, many tech enthusiasts in Pakistan are particularly curious about the expected prices of the iPhone 15 series in the country. However, it is important to consider the impact of taxes and currency fluctuations on the final cost.

What price should we be expecting

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) levies taxes on smartphones based on their dollar value. Consequently, an increase in the dollar value of the phone leads to a higher PTA tax. Considering the recent tax reduction announcement by the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for the iPhone 14 Pro models, the maximum PTA tax stands at approximately Rs131,000 for passport holders and Rs156,000 for CNIC users.

With the iPhone 15 series expected to come with a price hike of $100, the maximum PTA tax on these new models is projected to be around Rs150,000 for passport holders and Rs170,000 for CNIC holders. This estimation leads to a projected starting price of approximately Rs500,000 for the iPhone 15 in Pakistan.

It’s important to note that these are speculative figures and the actual prices may vary depending on the final specifications and tax regulations at the time of the iPhone 15 series launch in Pakistan.

The iPhone 15 series is generating a great deal of excitement among tech enthusiasts worldwide. With possible improvements in design, features, and performance, Apple fans are eagerly anticipating its release. However, prospective buyers in Pakistan should be prepared for potential price fluctuations due to PTA taxes and currency exchange rates. Only time will reveal the true innovations and costs of the iPhone 15 series, and until then, the tech world remains on the edge of its seat.
