The captain immediately contacted the control tower, diverting the flight to Karachi for an emergency landing.

PIA’s CEO, Khurram Mushtaq, was also aboard the flight, travelling from Karachi to Islamabad. Passengers were later transferred to another aircraft, which safely took them to Islamabad. The aircraft was grounded due to a technical fault in the landing gear.

Basel Adra, a Palestinian resident, and Yuval Abraham, an Israeli journalist, document the daily struggles of those affected by military actions. Their friendship provides a rare glimmer of hope amidst the chaos and shines as a portrayal of what it means to be a family. But as the film progresses, the escalating violence underscores the fragility of their bond. No Other Land is both a call to action and a poignant reflection on resilience.

9. Soundtrack to a Coup d’État

Jazz, politics, and history collide in Johan Grimonprez’s Soundtrack to a Coup d’État. The film explores the intersection of American cultural diplomacy and African liberation movements in the 1960s. Through archival footage and striking visuals, it uncovers the role of jazz musicians as ambassadors during a time of political upheaval. This richly layered documentary connects the dots between art, power, and resistance, making it a must-watch for history buffs and music lovers alike.

10. Dahomey

West Africa’s Kingdom of Dahomey takes centre stage in Mati Diop’s Dahomey. The film examines the legacy of colonialism through the return of stolen artefacts to Benin. While the restitution of 26 items sparks relief, it also ignites anger over the limited scope of justice. Diop adds a unique twist by giving voice to the objects themselves, creating a dialogue between history and identity. This unique and innovative approach makes Dahomey a standout exploration of cultural heritage.

Documentaries in 2024 proved that the truth is more powerful than fiction. These films tackled diverse subjects with creativity and depth, offering new perspectives on familiar issues. From personal stories of resilience to sweeping historical narratives, they reminded us of the importance of seeing the world as it is. A Reflection on the Craft of Acting

Honda-Nissan Merge to Form the Third-Largest Carmaker

Honda-Nissan Merge to Form Third-Largest Carmaker

Honda and Nissan are taking a monumental step by merging to form what could become the world’s third-largest carmaker. On Monday, the presidents of Honda and Nissan, Toshihiro Mibe and Makoto Uchida, signed a memorandum of understanding. The new holding company is set to launch by August 2026, placing the alliance behind only Toyota and Volkswagen.

Read more: Honda and Nissan are in Talks to Deepen Ties and Possibly Merge

The merger includes Mitsubishi Motors, a smaller alliance member, combining the strengths of three automakers with a combined market capitalisation of over $50 billion. Honda, valued at $40 billion, will take the lead in managing the merged entity. Nissan’s current valuation of $10 billion reflects its recent struggles, including workforce reductions and a 2023 quarterly loss of 9.3 billion yen ($60 million).

Despite criticism from former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn, who called the merger a “desperate move,” the partnership could benefit all parties. In 2023, Honda produced 4 million vehicles, Nissan made 3.4 million, and Mitsubishi contributed just over 1 million. Together, they plan to manufacture about 8 million vehicles annually while focusing on electric vehicles (EVs) and autonomous driving technologies.

This move represents Japan’s effort to catch up with global EV leaders and marks the largest shift in the automotive industry since Fiat Chrysler and PSA merged to create Stellantis in 2021. By sharing EV components and technologies, Honda and Nissan aim to reduce costs and accelerate innovation in a rapidly evolving market.

A new undersea internet cable, capable of delivering 24 terabytes of bandwidth, is under installation and expected to significantly enhance internet speed and reliability across Pakistan. Media reports suggest that the 45,000-kilometer cable is being installed by a French company and will supplement the existing seven cables, which currently provide 8 terabytes of bandwidth. The cable will connect Pakistan with the African region, addressing long-standing complaints about slow internet speeds.

Pakistan Software Houses Association (P@SHA) Chairman Sajjad Mustafa Syed said the cable is not yet operational but will likely be active next year. Syed also revealed that four additional major internet lines are in the pipeline, including infrastructure to support 5G. It will address bandwidth congestion and improve fibre connectivity for mobile towers. “These projects, expected to double capacity next year, will ensure Pakistan’s internet infrastructure meets demands for the next two to five years,” he added.

According to P@SHA chairman, Pakistan’s IT sector was incurring losses of over one million dollars per hour due to frequent internet shutdowns. He explained that for every dollar the government invests in market access, a return of $49 is generated.

On Sunday, Parliamentary Secretary for the Cabinet Division Syed Sajid Mehdi advised Pakistanis to limit their internet usage to “important matters only,”  Speaking on a television program, Mehdi likened internet congestion to traffic jams, attributing slow speeds to overuse and the country’s limited fibre-optic capacity.

Microsoft Reduces OpenAI Usage to Boost Copilot AI

Microsoft Reduces OpenAI Usage to Boost Copilot AI

Microsoft is pushing to diversify artificial intelligence by driving its flagship AI product, Microsoft 365 Copilot, by adding more in-house and third-party models, sources told Reuters. The move will help to reduce costs and lessen dependence on OpenAI, the AI startup that has been central to Microsoft’s AI strategy.

Since its launch in March 2023, 365 Copilot has relied heavily on OpenAI’s GPT-4 model. However, Microsoft has been training smaller, in-house models, including Phi-4 and customizing open-weight models for affordability. “OpenAI remains our collaborator on frontier models,” said a Microsoft spokesperson, emphasising the ongoing partnership alongside diversification efforts.

Other business units, such as GitHub, have followed a similar approach. In October, GitHub began using AI models from Anthropic and Google in addition to OpenAI’s GPT-4. Likewise, the consumer chatbot Copilot now employs a mix of in-house and OpenAI technologies.

Despite concerns about pricing and utility, 365 Copilot shows promising adoption rates. BNP Paribas Exane analysts predict over 10 million paid users by year-end. Microsoft reports that 70% of Fortune 500 companies have already embraced the tool. By integrating a diverse range of AI models, Microsoft aims to balance costs while enhancing the product’s value for users.

South Koreans Use Parody for Political Protest

South Koreans Use Parody for Political Protest

In the midst of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s controversial martial law decree, South Koreans discovered an unusual way to express their outrage this December. Serious political grievances served as the basis for the protests, but satire, humour, and a dash of the whimsical filled the streets.

A Spoonful of Humour Amid Fury

Protesters carried more than just standard banners. To show support and have their voices heard, they turned to satire. Messages from fake groups such as the “Dumpling Association” or groups mentioning popular foods like pizza and red bean pastries were frequently seen on flags.

For some, like 28-year-old Kim Sae-rim, the humour was personal. Waving the flag of the imaginary Dumpling Association, he explained, “I just wanted to show that we were here as part of the people, even if we aren’t actually a part of a civic group.” The creative approach resonated widely, with images of these flags going viral on social media.

The Tradition of Satirical Protests

South Korea’s history of satire-infused protests is not new. Veteran demonstrator Kwon Oh-hyouck pointed to similar expressions during the rallies that led to the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye in 2017. “People satirise serious situations, even when those in power come out with guns and knives,” he said. “They are not intimidated.

The humour wasn’t just about poking fun. It was about making the protests accessible to a wider audience. The flags and signs served as symbols of unity, showing that even those unaffiliated with political organisations felt compelled to speak out.

From Homebodies to Motion Sickness Sufferers

A diverse range of fake organisations were drawn to the protests, and each one found a voice in the movement. Flags for “homebodies,” motion sickness sufferers, and even a union of people “running behind schedule” were displayed. The latter group made a joke about how their daily routines had been disrupted by the need to protest.

For many, the humour lightened the gravity of the situation. Historian Lee Kihoon observed that these creative expressions underscored the diversity of people coming together. “They’re saying, ‘Even for those of us who have nothing to do with political groups, this situation is unacceptable,’” he explained.

Lightsticks, K-Pop, and Defiance

Even on the day lawmakers voted to impeach President Yoon, the mood remained spirited. Protesters danced to K-pop songs blasting from speakers and waved their lightsticks in solidarity. For fans like 31-year-old Lee Jung-min, the mix of joy and defiance felt fitting. “Even though this is a serious day, we might as well enjoy it and keep spirits up,” she said.

Humour as a Protest Weapon

The satirical banners and carnival-like atmosphere did more than lighten the mood. They also softened the tension and made the protests inviting. “Even though they’re angry, they haven’t gotten solemn, heavy, or moralistic,” noted Lee Kihoon. The clever humour showcased the resilience and creativity of South Korean protesters, proving that even in the face of serious challenges, laughter can be a powerful form of resistance.

In a time of political turmoil, the humour-filled protests became a reminder that solidarity doesn’t always have to be sombre.

Benegal’s first four feature films made him a benchmark for parallel cinema in India. He gave the country some of its best films in history cherished to date.

International Acclaim

Benegal’s legacy is known for his creative yet simple storytelling that captured the attention of audiences worldwide. Recently, Manthan took centre stage at the Cannes Classics Festival section. The film was inspired by Verghese Kurien’s revolutionary milk cooperative movement during India’s White Revolution. The collective effort reflected in the film’s theme of unity and empowerment made it a testament to the power of the people.

Shyam Benegal’s work was probing and intriguing, pushing people to think outside of what was happening around them Benegal once told Sangeeta Datta, the author of Shyam Benegal, “It would be ridiculously dogmatic and simplistic to think in terms of simple solutions. There are no simple solutions to complex problems.”

Despite receiving acclaim from the world and numerous awards, Benegal always remained courteous and accessible, even to students. Since 1977, he followed a routine that involved sitting in his office in Mumbai between 10 am to 6 pm. His cabin has a telephone, book-lined shelves and a desk for scripts. Even at the peak of his fame, he remained generous and polite to whoever he met.

Who Will Get The First Pick In PSL 10 Player Draft?

Cricket fever is about to hit a whole new level! The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced the pick order for the much-anticipated Player Draft of Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10.

This year’s draft promises not just exciting picks but also a stunning venue—Gwadar, the picturesque port city in Balochistan. Mark your calendars for Saturday, January 11, 2025, because it’s going to be a night to remember!

Who’s Picking First?

Let’s dive into the all-important pick order. Reigning champions, Islamabad United, may have the trophy, but they’ll be the last to pick in the first round of the Platinum category.

Meanwhile, the two-time champs Lahore Qalandars have hit the jackpot—they’ll kick things off with the first Platinum pick.

Here’s the breakdown of the first round:

  1. Lahore Qalandars
  2. Karachi Kings
  3. Quetta Gladiators
  4. Peshawar Zalmi
  5. Multan Sultans
  6. Islamabad United

But hold on! The second round flips the script. United will make the first pick in the reverse order, followed by Multan Sultans, Peshawar Zalmi, and so on. This setup ensures a fair and balanced distribution of talent across all teams.

What About Diamond and Gold Categories?

The excitement doesn’t end with the Platinum category. Each team gets three picks in the Diamond and Gold categories as well.

  • Diamond Category: Karachi Kings will start things off in the first round, with Multan Sultans and Islamabad United taking over in the second and third rounds.
  • Gold Category: Peshawar Zalmi will lead the charge in the first round, followed by Quetta Gladiators in the second, and Multan Sultans in the third.

This order keeps fans guessing about how their favorite teams will strategize to build their squads.

Why Gwadar?

The choice of Gwadar as the venue for the PSL 10 Player Draft is nothing short of spectacular. Known for its breathtaking coastline and rich cultural heritage, the city is set to shine as cricket’s newest hotspot. The PCB’s decision to host the draft here isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s a move to promote cricket in Balochistan and inspire young talent in the region.

Why Mohammad Amir Finds Babar vs. Virat Comparisons ‘Funny’?

Babar vs. Kohli: Ian Smith Weighs In on Cricket’s Hottest Debate

In recent years, the cricketing world has been buzzing with comparisons between Pakistan’s Babar Azam and India’s Virat Kohli. But not everyone’s on board with these debates—former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir, for one, finds them downright amusing.

Virat: The Greatest of This Generation?

Speaking on a sports talk show, Amir didn’t hold back in his praise for Virat Kohli. For him, there’s no question: Kohli is in a league of his own.

“I laugh when comparisons are made between Virat Kohli and Babar Azam, Steve Smith, or Joe Root,” Amir said. “Virat Kohli is the greatest player of this generation.”

Strong words, but Amir didn’t stop there. He highlighted Kohli’s unmatched ability to win games for India across all formats. According to him, no other modern batter comes close.

“Virat has won so many matches for India—something that seems almost impossible for any one player,” he emphasized.

The Comeback That Defines Kohli

What really sets Kohli apart, according to Amir, is his mental toughness and work ethic. He pointed to Kohli’s dismal tour of England in 2014, where the Indian batter struggled to cope with James Anderson and the seaming conditions.

“After his bad phase in England in 2014, the way he made a comeback and then performed brilliantly for the next 10 years was no ordinary feat,” Amir said.

Virat Kohli

Kohli didn’t just bounce back; he redefined himself. From a struggling batter in English conditions to one of the most consistent performers in cricket history, his journey is nothing short of inspirational.

Dismissing Kohli in the CT 2017 Final

Amir also shared his own special moment involving Kohli—the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy final. Pakistan’s comprehensive victory over India in that match is etched in every Pakistani cricket fan’s memory. And for Amir, dismissing Kohli early was a turning point.

“His wicket in the 2017 Champions Trophy final was very important for us,” Amir recalled. “If Virat had not been dismissed, we would have lost the final because we all know how exceptional Virat’s record is while chasing runs.”

It’s hard to argue with that. Kohli’s chasing record is legendary, and removing him early in a big game is often the key to beating India.

Fakhar Zaman Breaks Silence On His Tweet & Fitness

fakhar-zaman-breaks-ties-with-saya-after-babar-azam-tweet-could-fakhar-zaman-be-pakistan-white-ball-captain

Fakhar Zaman have recently made some candid revelations and sparked conversations in the cricketing world. Known for his explosive batting, the left-hander has been in the spotlight lately, not for his on-field heroics but for a tweet supporting Babar Azam and the subsequent chatter it stirred.

The Tweet That Turned Heads

Before Pakistan announced their squad for the second and third Tests against England in October, Fakhar tweeted in support of Babar Azam. The message seemed harmless at first glance but he was later omitted from the squads for tours to Australia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa.

The timing led to speculation. Was Fakhar criticizing the PCB? Was he taking a stand against the system? These questions floated around until Fakhar set the record straight.

Clearing the Air

In a recent interview, Fakhar addressed the controversy head-on. He admitted that, in hindsight, the tweet might have been better left unsent. But his intention, he clarified, was never to criticize the PCB.

“Some people misunderstood my tweet. It wasn’t against the board at all,” Fakhar said, adding that his message was aimed at journalists and former players calling for Babar’s exclusion from the squad.

“Babar has done so much for Pakistan cricket. Seeing people question his place in the team felt unfair,” Fakhar explained.

The Fitness Dilemma

While the tweet grabbed headlines, Fakhar’s fitness issues also became part of the narrative. The 34-year-old revealed he had been battling hyperthyroidism, a condition that required a two-month rest.

“I wasn’t aware of my condition when the team was leaving for Australia,” Fakhar shared. “Looking back, I’m thankful I didn’t travel. In that state, performing at the highest level would have been impossible.”

Fakhar also noted that his decision to step back was mutual. “The PCB and I had an understanding about my rest period. There was no bad blood,” he emphasized.

Fakhar’s last appearance for Pakistan was during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in June 2024. While fans eagerly await his return, the opener remains focused on his recovery and fitness.

For now, he seems determined to silence the noise around him. His message is clear: his loyalty to Pakistan cricket is unwavering, and his respect for Babar Azam is rooted in the skipper’s undeniable contributions to the team.

Women-led Carjackers Busted in Karachi

Women-led Carjackers Busted in Karachi

Six members of a street crime and carjacking gang led by a woman, Anisa Kiran, have been taken into custody by Karachi authorities.

The Gang’s Leadership and Operations

Targeting factory vehicles and distribution company cashiers, the 22-member gang carried out robberies all over Karachi. Anisa Kiran not only served as the group’s leader but also actively participated in the planning and execution of their crimes, according to SSP Zeeshan Shafiq Siddiqui.

Her husband, Saad, acted as her key accomplice, recruiting young men employed in factories as salesmen or order bookers. He tempted them with promises of quick and easy money, leading them into a life of crime.

The Arrests and Key Suspects

Police arrested six individuals, including Anisa herself, her husband Saad, and other members: Sherdil, Abdul Rafi, Kabir, and Basit. Among them, Basit had recently returned from Dubai. The others had been involved in criminal activities for over a year.

Sherdil and Rafi had previously been arrested for similar offences, but the majority of the suspects were first-time offenders. According to police, the gang’s operations suffered significant losses as a result of their arrests.

Recovery of Stolen Items

Police found a number of stolen items during the operation, including three pistols, cash, purses and wallets, laptops, among other things.

These items were linked to robberies across multiple neighbourhoods in Karachi, including Defence, Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan, Hyderi Market, Azizabad, and Gulshan-e-Maymar.

Confessions and Broader Implications

The people who were taken into custody admitted to taking part in numerous robberies throughout the city. Their activities took advantage of the schedules and movements of defenceless factory and distribution workers.

A Criminal Network Upended

This case highlights the concerning pattern of young people being lured into criminal activity by deceptive claims of financial gain. Residents of Karachi are relieved by the arrests, but they also serve as a reminder that systemic changes are required to address youth unemployment and crime.

The police’s swift action has dealt a significant blow to this gang, offering a sense of security to the communities affected by their crimes.
