As We Enter Muharram, Let’s Look at Why We Practice It

Muharram marks a new beginning.

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar, but it is much more than just the beginning of a new year. Along with Rajab, Dhul-Qa’dah, and Dhul-Hijjah, it is considered one of the four holy months.

War is forbidden in Muharram. Muslims all over the world, especially in Pakistan, India, Iran, and the Middle East, fast and engage in deep self-reflection. Weddings and celebratory occasions are usually postponed or cancelled in this month, for this is the month to reflect on your inner self, and engage in ibadah.

Furthermore, there are massive social gatherings dominated by sermons and religious teachings. 9th and 10th Muharram carry special significance and also serve as public holidays nationwide.

During these sacred days, all forms of public entertainment are suspended across many communities. For Shia Muslims in particular, the month holds profound religious significance.

They observe it with spiritual intensity, abstaining from music, refraining from wearing bright or festive clothing, and engaging in rituals such as matam (ritualistic chest-beating) to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (A.S) and his companions.

Acts of charity are also central to the commemoration, with many setting up sabeels (stalls) to distribute free water, juices, and food to passersby as a gesture of remembrance and service.

The Battle of Karbala is at the Heart of Muharram

Much of the processions, traditions, and rituals performed in Muharram revolve around the Battle of Karbala in 680 CE, where Hazrat Imam Hussain bin Ali, grandson of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his followers were brutally martyred.

Hazrat Imam Hussain and his followers rejected the tyrannical rule of Yazid, preferring peace and refusing to pledge loyalty. In the battlefield of Karbala, two armies, the good, led by Imam Hussain, and the evil, led by Yazid, met in a ferocious battle.

Yazid also cut the water supply for Hazrat Imam Hussain and his followers, and didn’t even allow it to the children. But he, Hussain, stood steadfast in the face of the hardship, for he knew that God was with him.

Despite a valiant effort, Yazid’s army overpowered and outnumbered Hazrat Imam Hussain and his followers. 72 innocent lives were lost, including innocent children, like Hussain’s infant son Ali Al-Asghar, and women. The massacre occurred on the tenth of Muharram (Ashura).

Ashura, thus, became a day of worldwide mourning for Muslims. It is a universal and perpetual reminder of the sacrifices Hazrat Imam Hussain and his loyal followers made for Islam.

Shia Muslims set up water stalls as a symbolic gesture to remind followers of the severe thirst Imam Hussain and his followers endured for days after Yazid’s army had cut off the water supply.

Muharram revolves around The Tragedy of Karbala.

Remembrance and Self-Reflection for all Muslims

While Muharram is conventionally associated with Shi’a Muslims, all sects of Islam should consider it an important month for remembrance and self-reflection.

Hazrat Imam Hussain’s army stood in opposition to a powerful and tyrannical rule. Despite being outmatched and outnumbered, they still brought the fight. This was a brave act of perseverance that all Muslims should emulate.

Karbala is a reminder that tyranny should always be opposed, and one must always choose principle and faith.

CBD Punjab Resolves 30-Year Sewerage Crisis On Walton Road

The advanced drainage system, designed and executed by CBD Punjab, efficiently redirected rainwater into the CBC Lake.

In a major infrastructural milestone, the Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (PCBDDA), also known as Central Business District Punjab (CBD Punjab), has successfully implemented a state-of-the-art drainage system on Walton Road and CBD Route 47. This modern system has effectively addressed the long-standing issue of urban flooding and sewerage, particularly the decades-old challenge faced by residents and commuters on Walton Road.

For the first time in over 30 years, there was no ponding or accumulation of rainwater on Walton Road during the recent pre-monsoon spell, which recorded 58 millimeters of rainfall in Lahore. The newly implemented drainage infrastructure demonstrated its efficiency, ensuring smooth traffic flow and uninterrupted mobility along Walton Road and CBD Route 47 even during heavy downpours.

The advanced drainage system, designed and executed by CBD Punjab, efficiently redirected rainwater into the CBC Lake, eliminating the risk of water stagnation and ensuring that surrounding communities remained unaffected. This initiative is part of CBD Punjab’s broader vision to modernize urban infrastructure and create resilient, smart and sustainable cityscapes.

Speaking about the success of the project, CEO CBD Punjab, Imran Amin, stated,
“Resolving the three-decade-old sewerage issue on Walton Road was a top priority for CBD Punjab. We are committed to developing sustainable urban infrastructure that not only meets today’s needs but also secures our future. The successful functioning of the new drainage system during the recent rains is a testament to our dedication, planning, and execution.”

The achievement highlights CBD Punjab’s growing role in transforming Lahore’s urban landscape through strategic infrastructure development and modern civic solutions. Residents, daily commuters and businesses have expressed relief and appreciation as Walton Road, once notorious for waterlogging and traffic disruption, now stands as a symbol of progress and urban resilience.

This milestone reinforces the authority’s commitment to delivering on its promise of building a modern Punjab, prioritizing citizen welfare, and addressing critical civic challenges through innovation and effective governance.

ACCA Announces Redesign Of Qualification For A Redefined Accountancy Profession

Responding to and anticipating the evolving needs of employers, the changes build on the current strengths of the ACCA Qualification.

Global accountancy body ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) has announced a redesign of its gold standard ACCA Qualification focused on a redefinition of accountancy which is expanding and reshaping the role of the profession.

The redesign reflects the increasing role of accountants in driving the widening value needed for business success, combining profitability with ethics, sustainability, the ability to leverage new technology and the agility to deal with economic volatility. Similar changes are being seen in the public sector.

Responding to and anticipating the evolving needs of employers, the changes build on the current strengths of the ACCA Qualification. They will introduce a more integrated learning and assessment experience, including AI-enhanced learning journeys, designed to equip the next generation with the professional skills and technical expertise they need to succeed in a dynamic and volatile world.

The announcement follows extensive consultation with members, employers and learning providers around the world, as well as representatives of Gen Z. The redesigned qualification will be introduced from mid-2027.

Helen Brand, chief executive of ACCA, said: ‘Accountancy is being redefined. Accountants are drivers of sustainable business, promoters of social value, and enablers of new technologies. They are sharpening their financial and ethical skills for a changed world of ever-shifting opportunities and challenges. They innovate with new business models and fresh thinking about what success looks like. They focus on people, planet and prosperity to create value for all.

‘The changes we’re making will equip the next generation for this exciting new future that will bring wider and more varied opportunities.’

Employability is a key focus of the changes, which include the introduction of Employability Modules at each of the qualification’s three levels, providing simulated work experiences on topics such as digital tech, ethics, sustainability and business management.

Enhanced awards and designations recognise achievement and allow students to demonstrate their skills to employers at every stage of their ACCA journey.

Technology, sustainability and ethics, already integral to the ACCA Qualification, will be interwoven at every stage. Another innovation is a new Data Science Professional exam which students can choose as an option at the final ‘Strategic Professional’ level.

Assad Hameed Khan, who heads ACCA in Pakistan, said: ‘The ACCA Qualification has always been the gold standard, globally recognised and highly valued by employers in Pakistan.  It will remain as rigorous, relevant, and future-focused as ever, with an even sharper focus on employability.

‘The redesigned qualification comes together as a unified experience at each of its three levels with learning guidance and support, assessments, employability support, and help to develop skills.  Students will benefit from tailored learning journeys supported by AI technology and a digital mentor.’

ACCA has prepared a smooth transition for all students currently on, or about to start, their ACCA journey. Existing achievements will be recognised and there will be no disadvantage in terms of progression and the cost to complete the qualification.

ACCA students will continue to benefit from the opportunity to attain a world-leading academic qualification alongside their ACCA studies with our new BSc (Hons) Professional Accountancy collaboration with the University of London.

ACCA is known for its focus on inclusion and opportunity. A redesigned ‘Foundations’ route requiring no prior qualifications provides those not meeting the entry criteria for the ACCA Qualification with a way to meet it. Find out more at accaglobal.com

Zohran Mamdani is So Gen Z, Even His Campaign Says So!

zohran-mamdani-is-so-gen-z-even-his-campaign-says-so

Zohran Mamdani is the man who got the whole South Asian community rooting for him despite internal differences. Many even stated that it was the first time that they ever took an interest in the Mayoral campaign, so that truth can finally prevail over billionaire-funded sexual harassers who never saw them as their own.

Zohran didn’t just sweep the millennial and elderly voters, but also won over Gen-Z through his Bollywood-ish quirky but relatable campaign.

Through his hilarious videos, including an Eid greeting card and a video where he’s talking entirely in Urdu as Bollywood music plays in the background, Mamdani has leveraged his South Asian roots to win the hearts of young Desis. And the best part? He is not a whitewashed puppet who is afraid to represent his culture.

The Gen-Z Campaign that Led Kids to Force their Parents

From the jump, Mamdani’s campaign graphics looked like Twitter meme culture but with a desi twist. What’s even better is that he didn’t deviate from his policies and his motive. It was never just about the memes; it was about deeper issues.

This helped his younger supporters spread the word to their parents and grandparents because the content was substantive and approachable rather than niche or snarky.

On the other hand, his primary rival, Andrew M. Cuomo’s campaign was flooded with ads, that also in the evil billionaires ‘ style. This didn’t hide his controversial past, including the sexual harassment allegations made against him.

In August 2021, New York Attorney General Letitia James accused Cuomo, whose father was also governor, of sexually harassing 11 women. He resigned, and then his brother Chris, a star anchor on CNN, had to leave for advising him.

Now that Zohran has won the democratic primary, here are some campaigns that allowed him to make history.

Zohran’s Desi WhatsApp Chat Aesthetic Eid Greeting

On Eid al-Adha, Mamdani shared an Eid Mubarak post on his main Instagram account that was also a reminder for people to vote. But it wasn’t the typical campaign video that you may be thinking about. It was like a peak desi dad WhatsApp “good morning” message and resonated with his young audiences and desi aunties alike.

The post featured bright flowers, a heart-shaped wreath made out of roses, and a cutout of Mamdani’s face flashing in and out of the screen in ironically cringey transitions.

The video garnered over one million views and 100,000 likes on Instagram, as well as comments from Pakistani actor Mehwish Hayat and singer Ali Sethi.

The Name is Mamdani- “M-A-M-D-A-N-I”

During the democratic primary debate, as the candidates discussed job experience, Cuomo repeatedly mispronounced Mamdani’s name and stated, “Experience matters, and I think inexperience is dangerous in this case.” Claiming that Mamdani had a staff of just five people but would need to manage a staff of 300,000.

He then listed various experiences that Mamdani lacked, such as dealing with unions and handling natural disasters. All this while Cuomo couldn’t do a simple research on how to pronounce his electoral rival’s name.

In response, Mamdani called attention to Cuomo’s controversial past, asserting that he was the better candidate for the job, despite Cuomo’s experience.

“To Mr. Cuomo: I have never had to resign in disgrace. I have never cut Medicaid. I have never stolen hundreds of millions of dollars from the MTA. I have never harassed the 13 women who credibly accused me of sexual harassment. I have never sued for their gynaecological records, and I have never done those things because I am not you, Mr. Cuomo.”

As if that wasn’t a significant moment, Mamdani further emphasised his point by teaching Cuomo how to pronounce his name correctly. “Furthermore, the name is Mamdani—M-A-M-D-A-N-I. You should learn how to say it.”

The Urdu Campaign With Bollywood References

As part of his social media campaign, Mamdani made an entire video explaining how people should vote, that too, IN URDU!

The video featured the iconic ‘Om Shaanti Om’ playing softly in the background, as Mamdani asks, “Tum ne kabhi kisi ko vote diya?” [Have you ever voted for anyone?] à la Rishi Kapoor in Karz.

Mamdani then uses mango lassi — because what could possibly be more South Asian than mangoes AND lassi — to explain how the rank-based election system works and urged his followers to rank every candidate.

He also told people what Cuomo is offering using the legendary Amitabh Bachan clip from Deewar; “Today I have a building, property, bank balance, bungalow, car. What do you have?” Instead of Shashi Kapoor, Mamdani himself pops up on screen and informs his supporters that he has them.

Zohran’s Campaign is More than Just Aesthetic

It’s easy to write this off as just good branding, but Mamdani’s campaign is grounded in democratic socialism and people-powered politics.

Zohran Mamdani is backed by the Working Families Party, has been endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, and has made it clear: He doesn’t serve landlords, lobbyists, or the status quo. And guess what? Gen Z loves that.

BlackBerry is stirring up a storm once again. Retro enthusiasts and productivity hunters are abuzz. The brand’s legendary physical keyboards are back, only more intelligent.

Titan 2: A QWERTY Powerhouse with a Rear Screen

Released through Kickstarter, the Titan 2 brings back the BlackBerry Passport feel. It is powered by Android 15 on a Dimensity 7300 chip. You get 12 GB RAM, 512 GB storage, and 5G. The 4.5‑inch screen maintains its square design.

Additionally, there is a secondary 2‑inch screen at the rear for alerts and widgets. It captures 50 MP photos in good light.

Weighing 235 g and measuring 10.85 mm thick, it feels substantial but up-to-date. The QWERTY keyboard also has touch-scrolling and shortcut functions. It’s a workhorse for productivity

Zinwa Q25: The Iconic Classic, Reborn

Zinwa Technologies has also revived the BlackBerry Classic as the Q25. It retains the 720×720 touchscreen and LED notification light. In terms of internal hardware, it receives a MediaTek Helio G99, 12 GB RAM, and 256 GB storage. The 3,000 mAh battery has all-day battery life.

It features a 50 MP rear camera, 8 MP front camera, USB-C, NFC, headphone jack, and 4G LTE. It comes with Android 13 in August for $400—or $300 if you upgrade your old Classic.

Zinwa Q25

Why this Matters

They take advantage of nostalgia, but they have contemporary specs. Physical keys, twin screens, and speedier chips come with it. All without sacrificing Android applications.

Gen Z and “digital detoxers” adore them. They abandon distraction-laden smartphones in lieu of easier, task-focused phones. At $269–$400, the phones are cheaper than flagship slabs and provide a workflow-first experience in one product.

The Future Outlook

No, BlackBerry isn’t releasing new phones officially, but startups such as Unihertz and Zinwa are stepping in. The Q25, Titan 2 could spearhead the move. Physical keyboards are niche. But they’re loved by writers, programmers, and productivity enthusiasts. These phones cut out meaningless scrolling. They introduce tactile pleasure.

Whether this phenomenon takes off is anyone’s guess. But for now, the new BlackBerry represents a return to concentrated design—with a dash of nostalgia.

These reborn BlackBerrys blend retro style with cutting-edge tech. They have physical keyboards, dual-screens, and hard-hitting performance. They’re not big on fluff but long on intention.

Nasir Iqbal, Noor Zaman Bag Silver at Asian Doubles Squash Championship

nasir-iqbal-noor-zaman-bag-silver-asian-doubles-squash-championship

In a showdown that had all the makings of a classic, Pakistan’s men’s doubles duo of Noor Zaman and Nasir Iqbal put up a spirited fight but narrowly missed out on gold, settling for silver at the Asian Doubles Squash Championship 2025 in Malaysia on Thursday.

The final wasn’t just about medals—it was a high-voltage clash between arch-rivals Pakistan and India, and it delivered every bit of drama expected from such a matchup.

A Final to Remember

Facing India’s top-seeded pair, Abhay Singh and Velavan Senthilkumar, the Pakistani team started strong, snatching the first game 11-9. The Indian duo, however, bounced back with back-to-back wins (11-5, 11-5), clinching the match 2-1 and successfully defending their title.

The intensity of the final was reflected in its duration—one hour and 27 minutes of high-octane squash, where momentum swung back and forth and every point was fiercely contested.

Road to the Final: A Gritty Run

Zaman and Iqbal’s campaign was nothing short of impressive. Their semifinal victory over hosts Malaysia was a nerve-wracking encounter that stretched to one hour and eight minutes. In that clash, they edged past Syafiq Kamal and Duncan Lee with scores of 10-11, 11-9, 11-9, showing remarkable composure under pressure.

Earlier, in the quarterfinals, they battled past South Korea’s Jiang Min Ryu and Jaijin Yoo in yet another three-set thriller (11-3, 5-11, 11-4).

And in the group stage, the Pakistani pair were clinical. Their 11-minute demolition of Chinese Taipei’s Chi Yu-Wei and Chen Ching-Fu (11-2, 11-9) showcased their authority and confidence. They had already picked up dominant wins over the Philippines (11-7, 11-4) and South Korea, making them worthy finalists in every sense.

Noor Zaman’s Grit: More Than Just Medals

Individually, Noor Zaman’s journey deserves special mention. He had competed earlier in the Asian Individual Squash Championship, where he exited in the pre-quarters against Malaysia’s Joachim Chuah. Battling a painful back spasm, Noor showed resilience, coming back from two games down to level the match, before eventually running out of steam in the decider.

That match may have ended in defeat, but it underscored his fighting spirit—something that was evident throughout this doubles campaign as well.

Why is Apple Promoting the F1 Movie on its Digital Wallet?

why-is-apple-promoting-its-f1-movie-on-digital-wallet

Apple recently caused some buzz, some good, some uncomfortable, by advertising its A-list-studded “F1: The Movie” through digital wallet alerts. The promotion serves to highlight Apple’s substantial investment, but also raises issues about privacy and brand limits.

A Daring Promotion

To augment the movie’s premiere, Apple pushed Wallet alerts, providing customers with a $10 discount on two or more Fandango tickets. This promotion, served through the Wallet app, looks like it’s a financial notice, an aggressive fusion of advertising and functionality.

why-is-apple-promoting-its-f1-movie-on-digital-wallet
Apple Wallet $10 discount on two or more Fandango tickets.

Why Wallet?

Apple co-produced the movie, spending nearly $250 million on the fast‑paced big‑screen action film with Brad Pitt and directed by Lewis Hamilton. Marketing the film through an Apple ecosystem platform drives box office sales and alignment with its tech offerings, including Apple Pay.

Most consumers resisted robustly. They want Wallet to be ad-free and perceive it as a safe zone for financial and travel information. The decision renewed backlash similar to the U2 album incident in 2014, in which Apple forced music onto users without permission. Critics now say Apple has crossed a line again.

What’s at Stake?

Tech policy observers note Apple broke its own App Store guidelines. The firm mandates opt‑in consent and an opt‑out option for marketing push notifications—neither was implemented here.

Users complained about privacy and control, considering they can’t simply turn off such marketing on the latest iOS version.

Apple’s Response

Apple’s upcoming iOS 26 update adds a new toggle in Wallet’s settings to turn off “Offers & Promotions.” The feature comes amid controversy, hinting that Apple expected public concern. Those on the beta can already turn it off.

For Apple, the strategy makes sense. By promoting the Wallet, Wallet = commerce channel, Apple emphasises Apple Pay, Fandango promotions, and F1—an ideal synergy. Nevertheless, analysts caution Apple will need to tread this strategy delicately.

It risks undermining the confidence it’s built up over decades.

f1-the-movie
F1: The Movie

What are Users Saying

Consumers filled online forums and social media sites with complaints. One Redditor posted: “I didn’t spend more than $1000 on an iPhone just to be advertised at.” Another believed Apple “abused” access by taking private utility for advertising. They point to a deeper conflict: user‑agency respecting vs. free‑wheeling ecosystem advertising.

Apple’s Wallet tie-in promotion of “F1: The Movie” marks a new page in its marketing playbook. It expresses the company’s faith in digital synergies. But it also pushes the boundaries of user trust.

The upcoming iOS 26 toggle might be a welcome solution. Nevertheless, Apple will have to walk on a thin line—softening the distinction between utility and advertisement might not be liked by everyone.

Digital Payments Now Make Up 89% of Retail Transactions in Pakistan

digital-payments-now-make-up-89-of-retail-transactions-in-pakistan

We can’t deny that the current fiscal year has been quite eventful for Pakistan (in a good way). The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has also reported continued growth in the country’s digital payments landscape, with a 12% increase in retail transaction volumes and an 8% rise in value during the third quarter of FY25.

Mobile apps, including banking apps and e-wallets, processed 1.7 billion transactions worth PKR 27 trillion; up 16% in volume and 22% in value.

the-state-bank-of-pakistan.
State Bank of Pakistan

The Rise of Digital Payments Over Cash

Not long ago, most people in Pakistan relied heavily on cash. However, things have changed fast. In just the last year, digital payments have become the go-to method for shopping, bill payments and even small day-to-day purchases.

E-commerce payments saw robust growth, increasing by 40 per cent in volume to 213 million and by 34 percent in value to PKR 258 billion. In-store POS transactions reached 99 million, worth PKR 550 billion, processed by over 140,000 merchants. QR code payments also grew, with 21.7 million transactions totalling PKR 61 billion.

Here’s what’s making Pakistan go digital:

  1. Most digital transactions (Raast processed 371 million transactions worth Rs8.5 trillion) were made using mobile banking apps. From checking balances to transferring money or paying bills, these apps have made life easier and more efficient.
  2. Services like Easypaisa, JazzCash, SadaPay and Raast have become household names. They now serve over 22.6 million users, making banking accessible even in remote areas. Even platforms like Google Wallet have entered Pakistan, which is boosting the economy even more.
  3. The central bank credited the growth to its digital finance strategy and collaborative efforts by banks, fintech, and payment providers, reaffirming its commitment to financial inclusion and payment system efficiency.

Formalisation of Money is Still a Challenge

Of course, it’s not all perfect. Some areas still struggle with internet issues, and not everyone is comfortable trusting digital platforms due to security concerns (many Pakistanis still doubt the authenticity of digital payments). But with ongoing awareness campaigns and better tech, things are improving.

With digital payments already at 89%, it looks like Pakistan could soon hit 90% or more. As more people start using tap-to-pay options, shopping online, and switching to digital wallets, cash might soon become a rare sight in daily life.

Financial Crisis Puts Pakistan’s FIH Pro League Entry at Risk

pakistan-set-for-fih-pro-league-comeback

Just when it seemed like Pakistan hockey had a chance to step back into the global spotlight with a place in the FIH Pro League, the harsh reality of funding, or lack thereof, has thrown a shadow over what could have been a much-needed revival.

Pakistan’s national hockey team has received a formal invitation to play in the upcoming season of the FIH Pro League, one of the sport’s most elite and competitive platforms. However, there’s a catch, and it’s a big one.

A Golden Ticket… With Strings Attached

The opportunity arose after New Zealand, the recent winners of the FIH Nations Cup, withdrew from the next Pro League season due to unspecified reasons, widely believed to be linked to financial challenges.

As runners-up in the Nations Cup, Pakistan is next in line to take their place. That’s a massive deal. Not only would this put Pakistan back among the world’s top-ranked sides, but it would also give their players regular international exposure—something they’ve sorely lacked in recent years.

But as always, dreams come with a price tag.

The Money Problem

According to sources, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) needs to raise over Rs 500 million to cover the expenses of participating in the league. From travel to logistics, accommodation to training camps—competing in a globe-trotting tournament like the Pro League doesn’t come cheap.

And time is running out fast. The PHF has been asked to submit an initial response by Friday, June 27. If they commit and then fail to follow through, the consequences could be severe, including potential fines and sanctions from the International Hockey Federation (FIH).

Why This Matters So Much

Let’s be clear: Pakistan’s inclusion in the Pro League isn’t just about prestige, it’s about survival and rebuilding. Once the undisputed kings of world hockey, Pakistan now sits at a lowly 17th in global rankings.

Their absence from high-profile tournaments like the Pro League has contributed to this decline. It’s a vicious cycle, less exposure means less experience, which leads to poorer performances and further obscurity.

Getting back into the Pro League would break that cycle. It would put Pakistan on the calendar again, generate interest, attract sponsors, and most importantly, give young players a reason to dream big again.

The FIH is expected to make a formal announcement soon regarding Pakistan’s inclusion. But for that to happen, the PHF must first find the funds—and fast.

Forget Starlink, this Chinese Satellite Internet Tech is Capable of 1Gbps

forget-starlink-this-chinese-satellite-internet-tech-is-capable-of-1gbps

A Chinese research team consisting of Liu Chao from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and Professor Wu Jian of Peking University of Posts and Telecommunications, just made a huge satellite internet breakthrough! It’s faster than Starlink!

They transmitted data at 1 Gbps from space. That’s about five times faster than Starlink’s average rates. The satellite orbits at about 22,800 miles above Earth, way higher than Starlink’s 341 miles. It employs a 2-watt laser, roughly the power of a nightlight.

Clever Signal: AO-MDR Synergy

The trick is putting two cutting-edge tricks together: Adaptive Optics (AO) corrects light distortion due to atmospheric turbulence. Mode Diversity Reception (MDR) collects scattered light in multiple channels. Together, they have high data rates and low errors, a leap from approximately 72% to 91% dependability.

Chinese Satellite that is Faster than Starlink

Proven with Precision

Engineers tested using a 5.9-foot (1.8 m) telescope at Lijiang Observatory. It has an array of 357 micro‑mirrors to adjust the arriving laser beam finely.

This technology might transform:

  • Remote online access in areas where fibre is not possible.
  • Low-latency communications, high-definition streaming.
  • Deep-space exploration and real-time satellite coordination.
  • Radio-based Starlink has much lower bandwidth compared to laser-based systems.

Still in Early Phase

Currently, it is experimental. The installation requires:

  • A gigantic telescope with adaptive optics.
  • Clear atmosphere, free from interferences such as clouds or haze. This makes mass deployment difficult.

China’s also developing satellite constellations such as Qianfan (“Spacesail”) and Guowang to challenge the West in satellite internet. These will utilise both LEO and geostationary orbits as they scale.

China’s laser downlink has enormous potential. It provides gigabit-class rates from a very high orbit with low power. If it comes to fruition, it has the potential to compete with Starlink and usher in new worlds for the internet, on Earth and in space.

Why BCCI, ECB Are Pushing Back Against Saudi’s T20 League Ambitions?

why-bcci-ecb-are-pushing-back-against-saudi-t20-league

Just when it seemed like Saudi Arabia was ready to bowl over the cricketing world with its very own T20 league, two of the sport’s biggest powerhouses have stood firm at the crease.

According to reports out of the UK, both the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have refused to support the proposed Saudi-backed T20 league, casting a long shadow over what could have been a seismic shift in the cricketing calendar.

Let’s break down what this tug-of-war is really about—and why it’s more than just dollars and cents.

The Grand Slam of Cricket?

Saudi Arabia had big plans. The reported blueprint? A USD 400 million investment into a glitzy, franchise-style T20 league, somewhat modeled on tennis’s Grand Slam format. Think: eight teams, four venues, and action spread across the year.

A tournament of this scale—especially backed by such deep pockets—had the potential to attract global stars, disrupt domestic leagues, and possibly reshape the very landscape of franchise cricket.

But not everyone was on board.

India and England Draw the Line

Both the BCCI and ECB, influential stakeholders in global cricket, have made it clear: no NOCs, no players. And their reasoning is simple—protect their own turf.

  • For India, it’s the IPL. A league now valued at $12 billion, the IPL is not just cricket’s crown jewel—it’s also BCCI’s biggest source of revenue and power.
  • For England, it’s The Hundred. Still finding its feet, the ECB has invested heavily in building its identity and profitability. The board recently allowed 49% stakes of The Hundred teams to be sold to boost investment.

With the Saudi T20 league lurking as a financial and scheduling threat, the two boards seem to have formed an unlikely alliance to guard their home soil.

ICC Politics in Play?

There’s also a bit of boardroom chess going on. Reports suggest that the BCCI and ECB will lobby the ICC to cap or discourage player participation in the Saudi league.

And here’s where it gets interesting—ICC chairman Jay Shah, who also serves as BCCI secretary, is unlikely to go against India’s stance. That means the Saudis may face a diplomatic full toss even before a single ball is bowled.

Not Everyone’s Saying No to Saudi T20 League

While India and England are holding their ground, Cricket Australia (CA) appears more flexible.

With BBL franchises still owned by state bodies and the governing board, CA is reportedly open to Saudi investment partnerships. For Australia, the pitch is clear—private money could help modernize and monetize its domestic product.

This mirrors what South Africa already did with its SA20, where teams were sold to IPL franchise owners, bringing in over $136 million.

What This Means for Global Cricket?

This situation is more than a power struggle—it’s a clash of models. On one side, you have traditional boards trying to preserve their tournaments, balance player workload, and maintain control. On the other, there’s a new financial giant looking to shake things up with shiny incentives and grand visions.

If the Saudi T20 League eventually finds a way in—possibly by targeting retired players, associate nations, or non-contracted stars—we could be witnessing the early days of another tectonic shift in the game.

Kiswa Gets Replaced: A New Islamic Year Begins

kaaba-is-replaced-with-kiswa-as-new-islamic-year-begins

To mark the beginning of the Islamic year 1447, the Kiswa of the Holy Kaaba was replaced on Thursday. The General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque completed this annual tradition.

First, they took off the gilded curtain from the Kaaba’s door, which was 6.35 meters long and 3.33 meters wide. Then, 154 skilled Saudi workers did the replacement. They lifted the old Kiswa, removed its decorations, and put on the new one.

Forty-seven black silk panels make up the fresh Kiswa. It has 68 gold-plated Quranic passages sewed with silver thread. The total weight of the Kiswa is 1,415 kg.

60 kilograms of pure silver, 120 kilos of gold-plated silver thread, 825 kilos of silk, and 410 kilos of raw cotton were used in the production. The method embodies accuracy and great Islamic legacy.

Is DeepSeek Just an AI Startup, or Something Tied to the Chinese Military?

is-deepseek-just-an-ai-startup-or-something-tied-to-the-chinese-military

DeepSeek is a Chinese Artificial Intelligence (AI) firm that made headlines earlier this year for developing an open-weight Large Language Model (LLM) that can rival GPT-4.

Compared to GPT-4, it achieved high efficiency at much lower costs using the Mixture of Experts (MoE) architecture. Also, the trained model weights (knowledge, in layman’s terms) are publicly released.

Nonetheless, GPT is proficient in more languages than its Chinese counterpart. Furthermore, public trust in GPT is higher because it has been around for longer and is continuously undergoing advancements.

However, US authorities have suggested that DeepSeek may be more than an AI Startup, and could be linked to China’s military-industrial complex.

US Believes DeepSeek Supported Chinese Military and Intelligence Operations

China and the US, two of the leading global superpowers, have been embroiled in a long trade war to increase their economic footprint. Washington believes that Beijing has an unfair advantage with DeepSeek.

A senior US State Department official believes that DeepSeek is feeding information to the Chinese military and intelligence apparatus, raising major security concerns. They stated:

“We understand that DeepSeek has willingly provided and will likely continue to provide support to China’s military and intelligence operations.”

US lawmakers had also previously raised the concern that DeepSeek was transmitting American users’ data to China, a serious allegation that was not addressed by the Chinese AI firm.

The official also hinted that Beijing may have tried to bypass America’s export restrictions to advance its military capabilities. The Hangzhou-based AI company has access to large volumes of US firm Nvidia’s high-end H100 chips.

China bypassed export controls to gain access to these chips. The official stated:

“DeepSeek sought to use shell companies in Southeast Asia to evade export controls, and DeepSeek is seeking to access data centres in Southeast Asia to remotely access U.S. chips.”

However, there was no clear indication that the firm had successfully evaded US export controls. Furthermore, DeepSeek didn’t issue an official response to the allegations.

Concerns About DeepSeek’s Legitimacy

LLMs like GPT and DeepSeek, with their conversational model, are designed for commercial usage. Knowledge has been made more accessible with these models, and personalised learning has become the norm.

If the allegations are proven to be true, DeepSeek has become a tool of the Chinese state, providing sensitive information beyond most commercial uses. This could also start a dangerous trend where states begin developing AI models solely for intelligence.

Most users are naturally oblivious to the breach of privacy, which raises questions about the legitimacy of DeepSeek and LLMs in general, too.

To manage such security concerns, official disclosures and conditions should be signed and verified before the individual uses DeepSeek. Furthermore, there is a desperate need for stricter checks and binding legislation on AI firms to oversee their ventures.

Pakistani Celebs and their Most Controversial On-Camera Moments

We all get too intrigued by celeb controversies, don’t we? This time, it’s Pakistani celebs’ controversial moments (that too on camera!) that are stirring the pot.

From public outbursts to unexpected confessions, we’ll explore what keeps these videos trending. You think you know the whole story? Think again.

Culprit # 1: Meera Jee’s English Mishap

Meera Jee is the queen of viral content in Pakistan. Her on-camera struggles with the English language have always attracted masses from memes to mainstream media debates.

In one unforgettable clip, Meera attempted to deliver a heartfelt message in English, but things took a hilarious turn. The video blew up, shared across Twitter, Facebook, and every desi WhatsApp group imaginable.

Surprisingly? It didn’t hurt her. Meera has always embraced her unique persona, and this moment only added to her cult following. She’s proof that owning your flaws can sometimes be your best PR strategy.

Public & Media Reaction: While some fans laughed it off with love, others weren’t so forgiving. Media outlets picked it up instantly, with headlines like “Is Meera a National Treasure or a National Meme?”.

Culprit # 2: Yasir Hussain’s Award Show Slip

Remember when Yasir Hussain cracked a joke at an award show that didn’t quite land? It’s perhaps one of the biggest celeb controversies to exist to date.

During a live segment, he made an insensitive remark about child molestation. Yea…I wish I was joking. Apparently, it was in relevance to the protagonist character of Ahsan Khan that rapes a child in the drama series “Udaari” but regardless he should have read the room.

Of, course, the internet didn’t hold back. Celebs like Armeena Khan and others clapped back, while fans trended #InsensitiveYasir on X (formerly Twitter). Later on, Yasir issued an apology, but the damage had been done.

Even today, people bring up that moment when discussing his personality. A single comment, forever attached to his public image.

Culprit # 3: Hania Aamir & Asim Azhar’s Live Drama

Hania Aamir and Asim Azhar’s relationship drama unfolded like a Netflix series but on Instagram Live.

One particular clip where Hania denies being in a relationship with Asim (after months of public appearances together) broke the internet. Heartbreak memes flooded in and twitter wars overtook the internet. People took sides, dissecting every post and unfollowing.

Asim stayed silent for a while, eventually channeling the emotion into his music as well as posting a story statement after a while. Hania, on the other hand, faced major trolling. The good part? After some time, fans spotted Hania attending Asim’s concert and not caring about what people say.

Our national IT girl knows how not to get drama to her head, and maybe this is why she keeps giving us more masterpieces, nationally and internationally (like Sardaar Ji 3).

Culprit # 4: Mathira’s Unfiltered Opinions

Mathira is unapologetic and that’s exactly why she goes viral. Whether it’s calling out men on live TV or sharing bold opinions on relationships, she doesn’t hold back. One clip where she shut down a male caller for slut-shaming her became a feminist rallying cry.

While many called her “too much,” she said what needed to be said, but unfortunately still became controversial for having boundaries. Are we even surprised?

She’s now seen as a voice for body positivity and women’s autonomy but she’s still pretty controversial for many.

Scandal Culture and Our Role As Audience

We’ve seen it all! Awkward moments, foot-in-mouth syndrome and PR nightmares. These celeb controversies can crush reputations or boost them. Some recover gracefully. Others? Not so much.

But as digital audiences, we also have a responsibility. Our Pakistani celebrities are also humans just like us, so obviously, they will also have ups and downs. Let’s know better what to make viral and what PR bait is not worth it.

Nasir Iqbal and Noor Zaman Reach Asian Doubles Squash Final

nasir-iqbal-and-noor-zaman-reach-asian-doubles-squash-final

Pakistan’s top squash duo, Nasir Iqbal and Noor Zaman, secured their spot in Asian Doubles Squash final by defeating Malaysia 2-1 in a tense semi-final on Wednesday.

The match was played at the Jalan Stadium in Sarawak.

In the first set, Malaysia’s team of Duncan Lee and Syafiq Kamal gained an early edge by winning 11-10.

However, the Pakistani pair made a strong comeback, winning the next two sets by 11-9, sealing the match in a gripping 69-minute encounter.

With this victory, Iqbal and Zaman are now set to face India in the Asian Doubles Squash final scheduled for tomorrow.

Earlier, in the quarter-final held on Tuesday, Pakistan defeated Korea 2-1 in just 37 minutes. This made them dominant in the game.

Pakistan displayed a remarkable form throughout the tournament with back-to-back wins over the Philippines and South Korea in the group stage on Monday. They dispatched the Filipino pair with ease, winning 11-7 and 11-4.

Zaman and Iqbal have been in Malaysia this month for squash events. They recently participated in the 23rd Asian Individual Squash Championships, also held in Malaysia.

In that tournament, Nasir Iqbal advanced to the quarter-finals by beating Lai Cheuk Nam of Hong Kong. Noor Zaman lost a close 3-2 match to Joachim Chuah of Malaysia in the pre-quarterfinal.

Zaman has been enjoying a strong run this year. In April, he was crowned men’s champion at the U23 World Squash Championships.

What Caused the Sudden Glacier Flood in Gilgit?

Gilgit-Baltistan, glacier melt, flash flood, Attabad Lake, Rescue 1122,

The National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) has issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for Gilgit-Baltistan and nearby northern areas. This warning comes due to ongoing heat waves, strong monsoon currents, and a westerly wave. Together, these factors are rapidly melting glaciers.

On Wednesday, a glacier melt triggered a flash flood in the Burundubar stream near Attabad Lake, a major tourist spot. According to Rescue 1122, the floodwater entered the Luxus Hotel. At that time, many tourists were inside when the flood hit.

As a result, Rescue 1122 evacuated over 160 tourists and hotel staff using boats. The flash flood had cut off land access to the hotel. Moreover, it damaged trees and nearby land, causing panic among those stranded.

Meanwhile, in Skardu, Barga nallah flooded again due to high temperatures. Police confirmed that floodwaters entered homes and fields. Consequently, many locals suffered loss and destruction.

Khadim Hussain, Director of the Gilgit-Baltistan Environmental Protection Agency, said glacier melt disasters have become more common. He linked this to both global climate change and local causes. The frequency of melting glacier disasters intensified in recent years,” he said.

Furthermore, Mr. Hussain explained that earlier snowfalls came in November–December and turned into ice. Now, snowfall mostly happens in February–March and doesn’t freeze properly. “With heatwaves, the snow is melting at a speed that causes flooding,” he added.

He also blamed deforestation, unplanned construction, tourism growth, and rising population. In addition, certain energy practices are making the situation worse. Altogether, these factors are speeding up glacier melt.

Another environmental expert told that many GB residents live near rivers and glaciers. Thus, when floods strike, they have very little time to escape. “They have no time to save themselves,” he noted.

He further stressed that GB glaciers provide 80% of Pakistan’s agricultural water. “This isn’t just a GB issue — it affects the whole country,” he warned.

In the end, experts criticised the GB government for lacking awareness efforts. They believe not enough is being done to reduce climate risks. Therefore, the issue continues to receive low priority from authorities.

Will Muharram Begin on June 27? Moon Sighting Today

will-muharram-begin-on-june-27-moon-sighting-today

A meeting of the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will be held in Quetta today (Thursday) to sight the moon for Muharramul Haram 1447 Hijri. Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad, Chairman of the committee, will lead the session. Zonal Ruet-e-Hilal Committees will also meet at their local headquarters for the same purpose.

The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (Suparco) earlier predicted that the crescent for Muharram 1447 will likely be sighted on the evening of June 26. If sighted, the first day of Muharram and the new Hijri will begin on June 27.

According to Suparco’s statement, the moon is expected to be born on June 25 at 3:32 PM. At sunset on June 26, the moon will be approximately 28 hours and 15 minutes old. This age increases the chances of moon visibility that evening.

The statement added, “An expected duration between the sunset and the moonset at coastal areas will be 75 minutes.”
Suparco confirmed, “This duration will provide sufficient window for sighting of the Muharramul Haram moon.”

Based on the expected moon sighting, Youm-e-Ashur (10th Muharram) is likely to fall on July 6 in Pakistan. The meeting results today will confirm the Islamic calendar for the start of the new year.

The decision from today’s meetings by both the central and zonal committees will officially mark the beginning of the sacred month of Muharram. Any update will be based on actual moon sighting reports from different parts of the country.
