Google Makes its Appeal to Overturn Jury Verdict Declaring Play Store as an Illegal Monopoly

Google Makes its Appeal to Overturn Jury Verdict Declaring Play Store as an Illegal Monopoly

Google is fighting back against a jury verdict that said its Play Store is an illegal monopoly. It appealed its case to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. The tech giant is fighting the decision that can force it to make sweeping changes to its Android app ecosystem, which can include penalties.

Google vs. Epic: The Battle Continues

The case emanates from a lawsuit filed by Epic Games, the maker of Fortnite, that accused Google of unfairly dominating the Android app market. Epic contends that Google’s control over the Play Store gives it the authority to charge inordinate commission fees of 15% to 30% on in-app purchases, stifling competition and inflating prices for consumers.

Source: Press Democrat

The jury ruled in favour of Epic and the decision may oblige Google to open up its Play Store to other players and lower the commission rate. However, Google claims the case was handled improperly and has appealed the judgment.

The Market Definition Dispute

At the heart of Google’s appeal is the argument that the trial judge improperly defined the market. Google’s lawyer, Jessica Ellsworth, argued that the case should have been decided like a previous lawsuit against Apple, where the judge ruled that Apple’s App Store was part of a broader market. She claimed Google never agreed to let the jury decide its case, while the district judge chose not to.

However, appeals judges appeared skeptical of Google’s position. Judge Danielle Forrest noted how Google’s Android environment diverges from Apple’s closed “walled garden” in that the market definitions may even be different. A separate judge, Gabriel Sanchez, said that this constant competition from Google with Apple regarding operating systems does not restrict it to being a monopoly in distributing applications.

What’s at Stake for Google?

If Google is defeated, a lot is at stake. The remedies that the lower court ordered will impact Google adversely:

  1. Share Google’s Play Store library with alternative app stores.

2. Remove or cut commission fees by Play Store.

3. Increase competition in the Android ecosystem.

Google is also on trial for multiple antitrust issues; one of these issues includes the possibility of being forced to sell Chrome browser since Google dominates the search business.

The Way Forward

It is yet to announce the timeline of the decision, but the judgment may take months. While Google wants to fight to maintain its hold on Play Store, Epic Games expects that a more open and competitive app marketplace shall do them and many others more than good.

Lahore Launches Door-to-Door Garbage Collection Project

Lahore Launches Door-to-Door Garbage Collection Project

A new door-to-door garbage collection project has been launched in Lahore, aimed at improving sanitation services across the city and surrounding villages. With this initiative, the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) will see its annual budget rise from Rs16 billion to Rs22 billion. The project will provide cleaning and garbage collection services in villages, a service that was previously unavailable.

The government has set a deadline of March 30 for the completion of this service in all 274 union councils of Lahore. A garbage tax will be imposed on residential and commercial properties by the Punjab government once LWMC starts its collection services. The tax will help fund the new system. However, some residents have expressed concerns over the added financial burden amid rising inflation.

The LWMC spends over Rs 16 billion each year on waste management in Lahore city, but villages still lack these services. As part of the provincial government’s Suthra Punjab programme, the new initiative includes garbage collection from homes, cleaning of roadsand waste disposal in rural areas.

Pilot Project and More

Initially, a pilot project has been launched in 20 union councils across nine towns in Lahore, with plans to expand the service to all union councils by March 30. The project will cover about 70% of urban areas and 300 villages.

The Punjab government has approved purchasing machinery and hiring more staff for the project. In the first phase, 2,800 loader rickshaws have been acquired, and 3,810 employees hired, with another 2,932 to be recruited. This will increase LWMC’s total employees to over 18,000, raising its annual expenses to Rs 22 billion.

The LWMC has developed several business plans to help recover the costs, including a plan for garbage tax collection. However, previous attempts to generate revenue through similar plans have not been successful. The government has approved a garbage charge of Rs200 per month for homes in villages and smaller urban houses. Rs400 will be taken from houses ranging from 10 marla to a kanal and Rs300 to Rs700 from shopkeepers.

While many are in favour of the improved sanitation services, residents like Muhammad Rizwan have raised concerns about the additional taxes, given the current economic challenges. Despite the criticism, LWMC CEO Sahib Deen Babar affirmed that door-to-door garbage collection would be fully operational by March 30, with the tax collection to begin once the service is established.

Starlink Official Launch Date in Pakistan Revealed: Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Starlink Official Launch Date in Pakistan Revealed: Here’s Everything You Need to Know

Pakistan is on the cusp of a major internet revolution as Elon Musk’s satellite-based broadband service, Starlink, is to launch in the country by June 2025. With 90% of negotiations finalised between Starlink and Pakistan’s regulatory bodies, the final licensing steps are expected to be completed soon.

A Game-Changer for Connectivity

For years, Pakistan has struggled with poor internet infrastructure, especially in rural areas where fibre-optic networks are either unavailable or unreliable. Starlink’s satellite-based technology promises to bridge this gap by providing high-speed internet access nationwide, regardless of the terrain.

The launch comes as frustration over slow internet speeds and connectivity issues intensifies. The parliamentary committee has criticised the PTA for failure to regulate the telecom companies. Some areas of Lahore are reported to have no internet connectivity even within 40 kilometres. The arrival of Starlink is said to challenge existing providers and upgrade the overall internet quality.

Approximate Pricing and Packages

Although Starlink has not officially confirmed the pricing for Pakistan, estimates based on global trends are as follows:

Residential Package: 50-250 Mbps, PKR 35,000 per month with one-time hardware fee at PKR 110,000.

Business Package: 100-500 Mbps, PKR 95,000 per month, with PKR 220,000 hardware cost.

Mobility Package: 50-250 Mbps, PKR 50,000 per month, with PKR 120,000 hardware cost.

However, these high prices compared to legacy broadband are for users in remote areas where conventional internet services are unreliable or even non-existent.

Data Security

Despite the excitement, there have been many concerns on data security. Some policymakers make it clear that user data protection is a pressing concern and should be implemented as early as possible to the Personal Data Protection Bill of Pakistan, although such strict encryption at the global operation of Starlink can eliminate certain fears.

Marvel Denies Using AI for Fantastic Four: First Steps Poster

Marvel Denies Using AI for Fantastic Four_ First Steps Poster

Marvel Studios has denied claims that artificial intelligence was used to design the newly released poster for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The poster, revealed alongside the film’s first teaser on Tuesday, shows a crowd of people from the 20th century waving as the Fantastic Four seemingly embark on a mission.

While many fans welcomed the first look, some quickly pointed out unusual details in the artwork. Observers noticed that a few individuals appeared to have only four fingers, while others shared strikingly similar facial features. These inconsistencies fueled speculation on social media that AI had been used in the poster’s creation.

In response, a Marvel spokesperson told The Hollywood Reporter that the claims were untrue and that AI was not involved in the design process. The denial comes as discussions around AI’s use in entertainment continue to grow, with concerns about its role in creative work.

This is not the first time AI-related controversy has surfaced in Hollywood. Recently, the upcoming film The Brutalist faced similar accusations, with critics alleging that AI had been used to refine dialogue. Director Brady Corbet refuted these claims, explaining that lead actors Adrien Brody and Felicity Jones worked closely with a dialect coach to perfect their Hungarian accents. He clarified that only the Hungarian-language portions of the film were manually adjusted using Respeecher technology to maintain the authenticity of their performances.

Directed by Matt Shakman, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is set to be one of Marvel’s major releases of the year. The film stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach and is scheduled to hit theaters in July.

Kashmir Solidarity Day: A Day to Stand with Kashmir

Kashmir Solidarity Day: A Day to Stand with Kashmir

Every year on February 5, Pakistan observes Kashmir Solidarity Day. This day reminds the world that Kashmiris have been struggling for their rights for over 70 years. They don’t ask for much, just freedom and peace, but their voices remain unheard to this day. More than 100,000 Kashmiris have been killed for the crime of speaking up for their land and rights. Even more have faced arrests, torture and the destruction of their homes.

Pakistan’s Support for Kashmir

Pakistan and Kashmir share deep cultural, religious and historical ties. Pakistan believes Kashmir should have the right to decide its own future. The United Nations once promised this, but it is yet to happen. So when it comes to Kashmir, the issue is not just about a piece of land: it’s personal.

Hardships Under Occupation

Life in Kashmir is full of struggles. People face shortages of food and medicine, depriving them of basic needs. Security forces continue to control the region, making life difficult. Moreover, the Modi government and the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) are allowing outsiders to settle there, which could change Kashmir’s identity forever.

The World Must Act

Many human rights groups and countries have spoken about the situation in Kashmir. However, their words have not changed anything. The suffering of Kashmiris continues and world leaders remain quiet. Pakistan believes that without solving this issue, peace in the region is impossible.

Iran’s Strong Support

Iran has always stood with Kashmir, much like Pakistan. Iranian leaders, including Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, have spoken in favour of their rights.

On this day, Pakistan urges the world to take action. The international community must listen to the voices of Kashmiris. Their pain must not be ignored. It is time to protect their rights and bring justice to the people of Kashmir.

Astronomers also note that Ramasan will continue to fall in winter until 2031, after which it will shift to autumn for eight years.

Muslims worldwide observe Ramadan as a month of fasting (sawm), prayer (salah), reflection and community. Fasting is obligatory for all adult Muslims except those who are ill, traveling, elderly, pregnant, breastfeeding, or diabetic.

The pre-dawn meal is called suhur, while the meal to break the fast at sunset is iftar. As the holy month approaches, preparations begin for a time of spiritual devotion, generosity and unity.

Bridging the Gap on International Day of Human Fraternity

Bridging the Gap on International Day of Human Fraternity

Keeping recent events in mind, it seems as if our society has never been more split. More frequently, we find it difficult to see eye to eye on politics, religion, or social status. The International Day of Human Fraternity, however, reminds us that unity is more than just a wish; we can make it into a reality. Everything begins with respect, dialogue and a desire to listen.

Let’s Start Talking

I know talking about sensitive topics can feel uncomfortable. No one wants an argument. However, avoiding these conversations only makes the gaps wider. When we sit down, listen and try to truly understand each other, we build bridges instead of walls. The more we talk, the more we grow.

Small Acts, Big Impact

We don’t need grand gestures to bring people together. Small acts of kindness can change everything. A smile, a helping hand, or simply respecting someone’s viewpoint can go a long way. Imagine if we all made tiny efforts every day—our world would feel a lot less divided.

Education Can Change Everything

What we learn shapes how we think. That’s why it’s so important for schools to teach empathy, respect and inclusivity. If we raise children to value diversity, we’re setting the stage for a future where people come together instead of drifting apart.

Social Media: Friend or Foe?

While we all love social media, let’s be honest; it, more often than not, makes sensitive situations worse. It may unite us, but it also helps spread lies and drive cynicism. However, if used sensibly, it could become a good instrument.

Leadership Starts With Us

We often find ourselves looking upto politicians, influencers, or celebrities for guidance, but true leadership begins with each of us. When we embrace kindness, fairness and open-mindedness in our everyday actions, we set a powerful example for others to follow. Change isn’t all about a single defining moment; it grows from the small, better choices we make daily.

Bridging the gaps in our society isn’t just the responsibility of a select few; it falls on all of us. Whether it’s through meaningful conversations, simple acts of kindness, or teaching younger generations, every little thing we do matters. The International Day of Human Fraternity gives us an opportunity to think about how we can improve. Let’s seize that opportunity and work towards making our world a bit more united.

Directed and co-written by Trey Edward Shults, the movie follows a musician, played by The Weeknd, who suffers from insomnia and embarks on a mysterious journey with a stranger (Ortega) that threatens his very existence.

Moreover, newly released stills from the film include a gripping moment where Ortega’s character tenderly holds The Weeknd’s face as he screams in agony.

Another image captured him alongside Irish actor Barry Keoghan, both staring into a mirror, with Keoghan’s character leaning into The Weeknd’s head. As per the publication, additional shots include the singer sitting on the floor in a white robe, playing a digital piano and Ortega appearing behind a rain-streaked windshield.

Furthermore, the film’s announcement has sparked mixed reactions from fans. While some remain sceptical due to his widely panned performance in The Idol, others are hopeful that this project will allow him to redeem his acting skills.
