In older times, people would go to lengths to prolong their lives. Even today, Cryonics, the practice of freezing the human body so that it is preserved until after death and can be revived to life, sounds like science fiction. Tomorrow.Bio, however, is leading the debate of cryopreserving humans today for $200,000. Now the debate is: Is that a real journey toward immortality or an overpriced fantasy?

At the core of Tomorrow.Bio’s operations is a refurbished ambulance in Berlin. There, the process commences. When the patient is declared legally dead, the body is subjected to a highly complex preservation procedure. The blood is replaced by a cryoprotective agent, which prevents ice crystals from forming inside the tissues. This permits cooling to -196°C; the body is then stored in a facility in Switzerland.

Emil Kendziorra, the company’s cofounder and a one-time cancer researcher, believes that cryonics may eventually become as common as organ transplants. He notes that science is constantly progressing by citing an example such as Anna Bagenholm, a skier who was revived after two hours clinically dead, shivering under freezing conditions. However, critics point out a significant flaw: no human has been successfully resuscitated after cryopreservation.

Science or Speculation?

Cryonics is grossly questioned and attacked by the scientific community. This field, according to Clive Coen, a neuroscience professor, represents “misplaced faith in antifreeze” and underscores the fact that biological decomposition begins at the point when the heart stops. Even if revival becomes possible, the damage caused during death and preservation could present severe brain impairment.

There is limited hope through animal studies. Rat kidneys, for example, have been successfully preserved and brought back to life. Scaling such an effort up to the human brain is monumental. Cryonic enthusiasts are enthused by small victories, while most scientists view this field as at best speculative.

Cryonics is one of the emerging trends in life-extension technologies and anti-aging supplements for longevity research. Some see it as hope: an opportunity to enjoy a future world and possibly have fatal diseases cured. Others just see it as a costly distraction from the realities of life and death.

Tomorrow.Bio is ambitious, with plans to preserve memory and personality structures by 2025 and achieve reversible cryopreservation by 2028. These earthquakes suggest Japan could experience continued seismic activity for some time.

Rare Events Increase Uncertainty

Japan is now seeing unusual seismic patterns that experts have not observed before. As a result, predicting future events has become more challenging. What is a Planet Parade?

A planet parade, or planetary alignment, is when several planets in the solar system appear grouped together in the sky. Despite their still distant positioning from one another in space, their orbit aligns with such closeness in our perspective from Earth. Even the moon joins in sometimes!

Which Planets Will Be Visible?

Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and Venus should be very easy to spot, shining brightest on or about January 25. In fact, if you look very closely, you might be able to spot two of them tonight as well!

Why Does This Happen?

These planets now present the appearance of groupings because, as said by astrophysicist Dr Rebecca Allen, they presently orbit on one side of the Sun. Still, in reality, millions of miles separate them from each other or us.

Best Time and Tips to Spot Them

On January 19, Venus and Saturn will experience a conjunction, appearing as close neighbours in the night sky. Soon after, four other planets will enter the scene on the evening of January 21: Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, Neptune, Venus and Saturn (only Mercury will be missing).

The best time to see the planet parade is about an hour after sunset. Facing north, look to the left to see Venus and Saturn as a bright pair. Jupiter will be on the right and Mars will follow later, glowing red.

For extra help, use a star-mapping app like ‘Stellarium‘ or ‘Star Walk.‘ These apps can guide you to the planets and make stargazing easier.

The planet parade will be visible in most, if not all, locations in the US, Canada and Mexico, thanks to its long length and limited planetary movement. It will also be seen in India, at 7 pm local time on the 25th of January. While there are no official reports of the parade being visible in Pakistan, I’d suggest going to your roofs today, on 21 January and 25 January, and you might just witness the magic.

The planet parade is just one of many exciting celestial events this year. Expect a total lunar eclipse, meteors and even Saturn’s rings seemingly disappearing. Moreover, the night sky is full of surprises, so keep looking up!

Speaking at the inauguration, the chief minister shared details about the Asaan Karobar Finance Scheme. She said, “Under the Asaan Karobar Finance Scheme, interest-free loans of Rs1 million to Rs30 million will be provided.” The loans will be repaid through easy instalments.

In addition, the Asaan Karobar Card will offer loans ranging from Rs500,000 to Rs1 million. Entrepreneurs can apply online and get information by calling the helpline number 1786.

A Unique Initiative in Punjab’s History

According to the chief minister, these schemes are the first of their kind in Punjab. “These schemes hold the potential to change the destiny of Punjab and Pakistan,” she said.

The government aims to simplify the process of starting a business. She added, “Earlier, it was not easy to launch a business. Now we have made it easier through these schemes.”

Land and Solar System Incentives

To further support entrepreneurs, the Punjab government will provide land for small businesses at highly subsidised rates. Additionally, those setting up industries in export processing zones will receive free solar systems worth up to Rs5 million.

The chief minister highlighted the scheme’s flexibility. “There is no need to immediately get any NOC, licence or plan approved to obtain a loan. Get a loan today and start your business tomorrow,” she said.

The recent scenes of horror in Palestine and Ukraine have ignited my memory of an old book that stays relevant to date. Even 19 years after the publication of the book, readers regard it as one of the greatest works of all time. Written by John Boyne, this short, yet powerful story is about a little boy named Bruno who befriends a boy of his age. Nothing out of the ordinary about that, right? Except, Bruno’s friend lives in a concentration camp while Brno resides on the other side of the fence. The story highlights the innocence of two children, unaware of the unjust happening in the world. The end-unexpected… or maybe not. You’ll have to read to find out.

The Kite Runner isn’t just a tale, it’s sorrow, power, betrayal, redemption, hope and most of all love put together beautifully. It will leave you a new person by the end.
