iran-says-strikes-on-israel-were-self-defence

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Sunday that Iranโ€™s recent military response to Israel was an act of self-defence.

He made these remarks during a press conference in Tehran, marking his first public appearance since Israel commenced airstrikes on Friday.

Araghchi declared, โ€œIf the aggression stops, our responses will also cease,โ€ adding that Iran does not wish for the conflict to escalate into neighbouring countries unless compelled to act.

Israel has continued its airstrikes on Iran for a third consecutive day, reportedly targeting military and nuclear-related facilities.

Some Iranian missiles are said to have bypassed Israelโ€™s air defences, striking deep within the country.

Araghchi criticised the United States for failing to condemn Israelโ€™s attacks, labelling them โ€œillegal Israeli strikesโ€ and asserting, โ€œThe US must not remain silent on this blatant violation of international law.โ€

He further stated that Iranโ€™s actions were legal under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, which permits countries to for self defence when attacked.

โ€œOur actions have been defensive in nature. We do not seek war, but we will not remain silent in the face of aggression,โ€ Araghchi added.

There was no official comment from Israel following Araghchiโ€™s statements. Previously, Israel has stated that its strikes aim to prevent Iran from expanding its military and nuclear capabilities.
