A new trend, #Blurfie is taking social media by storm.

Pakistani celebrities and social media influencers are uploading photos with special captions aimed at raising awareness about Multiple Sclerosis on World MS Day, that falls on May 30th every year.

Multiple Sclerosis is a neurological disease which effects the central nervous system and can severely jeopardize the patient’s life if diagnosed late.

The disease is incurable and stays with the person for their entire life.

However, its impact can be controlled if the symptoms are identified in the early stage and necessary precautions are taken.

Symptoms of this disease can vary from person to person. The most common symptoms include but are not limited to:

  • Blurred vision
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle weakness
  • Walking imbalance
  • Sensations of tingling and numbness
  • Due to this, simple tasks like walking from point A to point B can be a challenge.

The Blurfie campaign in Pakistan focuses mainly on the first symptom, blurred vision, to raise awareness of the invisible symptoms of MS and its unseen impact.

Celebrities posting their selfies to pledge support for the campaign include Iman Ali, Iqra Aziz, Aiman Khan, Minal Khan, Imran Ashraf, Azfar Rehman, Noor Zafar, Rahim Perdesi, Sana Javed and Azekah Daniel.

Maybe some of you know already that I am living with Multiple Sclerosis. It is a part of my life now and my lifestyle has completely changed. My speech, movements, everything is impacted. But I am fighting on, like all the other patients who are living with this disease. MS affects the nerves in the brain, and the most common symptom is blurred vision. When there is a relapse, the blurred vision is also accompanied by dizziness. So in honor of World MS Day, 30th May – I am uploading a #Blurfie and urge you all to show support. Change your profile pictures to a Blurfie. #LivingWithMS #WorldMSDay #LetsBeatMS #IntezaarNaKaro . . . Here’s what you need to do Step 1: Take a picture while shaking your phone lightly Step 2: Apply the Facebook picture filter Step 3: Upload it on your social profiles Step 4: Use the hashtags #Blurfie #LetsBeatMS

What you're seeing is how a person with Multiple Sclerosis would normally view his or her surroundings… Blurred, disoriented and dizzy. This is what the disease can do when it affects the nerves in the brain. Not only that, Multiple Sclerosis is so rare that people think that the fatigue, or vision problems are related to vertigo. Sadly it is incurable. This World MS Day, I am raising awareness of MS by posting this #Blurfie to honor the people fighting this disease and trying to carry on their life as normally as possible. You can also be part of the movement. . . . im tagging @yasir.hussain131 @saheefajabbarkhattak @hinaaltaf to take the #Blurfie challenge with me‼️ Here’s what you need to do: Step 1: Take a picture while shaking your phone lightly Step 2: Apply the Facebook picture filter Step 3: Upload it on your social profiles Step 4: Use the hashtags #Blurfie #LetsBeatMS #WorldMSDay @letsbeatms #IntezaarNaKaro #Blurfie #WorldMSDay #LivingWithMS

The campaign is giving a voice to individuals affected by MS and challenge common misconceptions about the disease so they can understand where to seek timely and adequate help from.

A website called www.letsbeatms.pk has also been launched recently to help patients reach the right doctors for treatment of MS.

MS is a largely under-diagnosed disease in Pakistan, mainly due to lack of awareness.

Not only is the campaign helping spread awareness about the disease, but it is also commemorating the struggles of individuals already battling with MS.

Have you posted a Blurfie as a contribution to #WorldMSDay ?
