It is no secret that Gen-Z has walked into one of the toughest job markets in decades. Ask anyone under 27 about work, and you will hear the same story. Endless applications. Rejections without explanation. Interviews that go nowhere.
And when a job finally comes through, the pay is barely enough to survive.
This is not laziness or lack of effort. It is the reality of an economy that simply does not work for young people.
The Degree Doesn’t Mean Much Anymore
Once upon a time, a degree was a ticket to a stable career. Today, it feels like a very expensive piece of paper. Employers want years of experience from kids who have just graduated or are still studying for an entry-level role.
They want skills that require time and money to build, but they are not willing to invest in training. Gen-Z is stuck in a loop. You need experience to get hired, but you need to get hired to gain experience.
Research has confirmed, their older millennial critics had a far easier time locking down a gig to begin with. In fact, nearly 40% of previous graduates managed to secure full-time work in time for their graduation ceremony, but just 12% of recent Gen Z grads can say the same, making these young job hunters three times less likely to have something lined up out of school.
Most importantly, there is a generation gap that makes Gen Z intolerable for their millennial bosses, who can’t take the new work attitude.
Even if you land a job, the numbers rarely add up. Rent in most cities is crushing. Groceries and fuel drain whatever is left. Forget saving for a house. Forget building a safety net. For many, the goal has shifted from thriving to simply getting by.
Plenty of young workers turn to gigs like delivery apps or freelancing to stay afloat. It gives quick cash but little else. No health benefits. No security. No future. It is work that pays the bills today but leaves you anxious about tomorrow.
The Weight on Mental Health
All of this has left Gen-Z exhausted. They are more open about burnout and anxiety than past generations, and for good reason. Imagine sending out fifty applications and hearing nothing back. Imagine juggling three side hustles and still struggling to cover rent. It wears you down.
Gen-Z is the most tech-fluent generation. That should be an advantage, but technology is also taking jobs away. Automation and AI are swallowing roles that once provided stability.

But There Is Some Hope
Still, Gen-Z is not giving up. They are starting businesses, creating content, and finding new ways to work. They are not willing to accept a system that grinds them down. They value balance, meaning, and mental health in ways that could shape a better future of work.
The job market may be a nightmare right now, but Gen-Z is wide awake. They see the flaws clearly. And maybe that clarity is what will push change.
