Real Madrid returned home on Sunday expecting to reset their La Liga campaign. Instead, they walked off the pitch bruised, frustrated and two goals down after a chaotic night that saw them finish with nine men. Celta Vigo, organised and fearless, fully deserved their 2-0 win as Williot Swedberg stepped up with a memorable brace.

A Tough Homecoming

The Bernabeu has hosted everything from Champions League classics to NFL spectacles, but Madrid’s first home match after six straight away games did not bring the lift many fans hoped for.

Xabi Alonso’s side arrived with just one win in their last five league outings and looked like a team still searching for rhythm.

With Manchester City looming in the Champions League, Alonso rotated his defence by resting Antonio Rudiger. Young Alvaro Carreras started instead, though that plan was ripped apart when Eder Militao limped off early, and Rudiger was forced back into action.

On the other flank, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury handed Raul Asencio a start at right-back. It has been a difficult bedding-in period for the Englishman, and Madrid’s defensive instability continued to show.

Celta Stand Firm, Madrid Run Into a Wall

Real Madrid dominated the ball, but Celta Vigo goalkeeper Ionut Radu looked determined to turn the night into his own highlight reel.

He denied Jude Bellingham’s header, pushed away Arda Guler’s long-range effort, and kept Vinicius Junior from breaking free with a sharp save from a chipped pass.

Despite heavy possession, Madrid struggled to break down Celta’s deep block. Guler came closest, dragging a good opportunity wide after being set up by Kylian Mbappe.

Swedberg Flips the Script

Early in the second half, Celta Vigo struck with precision and flair. Bryan Zaragoza delivered a teasing cross, and Williot Swedberg produced a beautiful, improvised flick to beat Courtois. It was the kind of finish that silences a stadium.

Madrid, already rattled, now had blood literally on the pitch as Bellingham continued with a cut running down his face after a clash with Borja Iglesias. Moments later, the night worsened. Fran Garcia picked up two yellow cards within sixty seconds, and Madrid were reduced to ten men.

Madrid Loses Its Head

Even with ten men, Madrid pushed. Mbappe lifted a clever lob onto the roof of the net and substitute Gonzalo Garcia came close with a header, but Celta held firm. The frustration inside the Bernabeu grew, and so did the chaos.

In stoppage time, Carreras was shown a red card for dissent. Madrid were down to nine. Celta needed no second invitation.

Swedberg rounded Courtois with calmness that belied the moment and rolled the ball into an empty net. The Galicians wheeled away in celebration, sealing a result that shakes up the title race.

The Bigger Picture

The defeat leaves Real Madrid four points behind Barcelona, and their form heading into the Manchester City clash is worrying. Injuries, suspensions and a clear dip in momentum have created a storm Alonso must now navigate.

As for Celta Vigo, this may be the boost that transforms their season. A well-drilled side with belief can unsettle anyone, and on this night, they proved it in the biggest stadium of them all.
