Shoaib Malik Shuts Down the Critics, Justifies His Role As Player

Shoaib Malik isnโ€™t ready to pack his bags just yetโ€”and heโ€™s not afraid to say it out loud. At 43 years old, Malik continues to walk the fine line between player and mentor in PSL 10, proudly representing the Quetta Gladiators.

And while some fans have been quick to question his place in the squad, the veteran all-rounder just served up a sharp reminder: heโ€™s earned it.

โ€œIโ€™m Playing Because I Canโ€

Speaking to the media in Lahore, Malik directly addressed the growing criticism surrounding his role.

โ€œPeople often question why Iโ€™m still playing, but no one asks about those sitting outside the PSL entirely.โ€

Malik made it clear that heโ€™s not occupying a spot just for nostalgia. His fitness, form, and mindset, he insists, are still at a professional level.

โ€œI am still in good shape and can contribute positively on the field,โ€ he said with confidence.

A Mentor Who Can Still Perform

Yes, Malik is officially one of PCBโ€™s mentorsโ€”and no, that doesnโ€™t mean heโ€™s done playing. In fact, his contract allows him to play, and heโ€™s using every opportunity to prove that age is just a number.

โ€œI always try to fulfil my responsibilities as a mentor when needed,โ€ he explained. โ€œBut the think tank decides who plays. Our job is to perform when given the chance.โ€

Heโ€™s not trying to take away spots from younger playersโ€”heโ€™s trying to set an example for them.

The Bigger Picture: PSL Needs to Evolve

But Shoaib Malik wasnโ€™t just defending himself. He used the opportunity to talk about something bigger: the future of the PSL.

Now that the league has completed its first decade, Malik believes itโ€™s time for serious reflection.

โ€œThis is the right time for the chairman and all stakeholders to sit together and evaluate how we can take the league to the next level,โ€ he suggested.

And heโ€™s right. Ten years in, the PSL has built a solid reputationโ€”but thereโ€™s still room to grow. Malik wants the league to be more competitive, more player-focused, and more rewarding for both fans and players.
