Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated on Sunday that Iran’s recent military response to Israel was an act of self-defence.
He made these remarks during a press conference in Tehran, marking his first public appearance since Israel commenced airstrikes on Friday.
Araghchi declared, “If the aggression stops, our responses will also cease,” adding that Iran does not wish for the conflict to escalate into neighbouring countries unless compelled to act.
Israel has continued its airstrikes on Iran for a third consecutive day, reportedly targeting military and nuclear-related facilities.
Some Iranian missiles are said to have bypassed Israel’s air defences, striking deep within the country.
Araghchi criticised the United States for failing to condemn Israel’s attacks, labelling them “illegal Israeli strikes” and asserting, “The US must not remain silent on this blatant violation of international law.”
He further stated that Iran’s actions were legal under Article 51 of the United Nations Charter, which permits countries to for self defence when attacked.
“Our actions have been defensive in nature. We do not seek war, but we will not remain silent in the face of aggression,” Araghchi added.
There was no official comment from Israel following Araghchi’s statements. Previously, Israel has stated that its strikes aim to prevent Iran from expanding its military and nuclear capabilities.
