Aussie all-rounder Mitchell Owen, currently donning Peshawar Zalmi’s colours in PSL 10, is all set to join Punjab Kings (PBKS) as a replacement for the injured Glenn Maxwell in IPL 2025.
While Zalmi fans are just getting familiar with Owen’s explosive style, PBKS have already sealed the deal for a reported INR 3 crore. He’ll link up with the squad in India once Zalmi’s campaign concludes, which could be as early as May 9, or as late as May 18, depending on their playoff fate.
A Star Born in the BBL
Mitchell Owen might be new to South Asian fans, but his reputation back home in Australia is growing fast.
He burst onto the scene during the most recent Big Bash League (BBL), finishing as the top run-scorer while powering the Hobart Hurricanes to a title win.

His defining moment? A jaw-dropping 108 off 42 balls in the final, a knock that won him the Player of the Match award and turned him into one of the hottest young properties in T20 cricket.
More Than Just a Batter
What makes Owen a valuable asset isn’t just his batting fireworks. The Tasmanian is also a handy medium pacer, with 10 wickets in 20 T20 innings—making him the kind of player every franchise wants in their XI.
And when you’ve got Ricky Ponting, PBKS’ head coach and one of the sharpest cricketing brains, personally backing the signing, it’s a move worth watching.
Ponting has been closely tracking Owen through his role at Hobart Hurricanes and clearly sees something special in the youngster.

Zalmi, IPL, and a Packed May Schedule
Here’s the tricky part: Mitchell Owen is expected to join PBKS only after completing his stint with Peshawar Zalmi, who are currently fifth on the points table.
Their last group game is on May 9, but if they sneak into the playoffs, Owen could stay in Pakistan till May 18—just two days after PBKS wrap up their group-stage matches.
That said, if PBKS qualify for the IPL playoffs, Owen’s arrival could prove to be perfectly timed.
Interestingly, Owen landed in the PSL only after Corbin Bosch withdrew from Zalmi to join Mumbai Indians—replacing the injured Lizaad Williams. That little twist of fate might just have unlocked a bigger opportunity in the IPL for the young Tasmanian.
