US Pledges Support for Pakistan Reforms

During a farewell meeting with Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Tuesday, the US Ambassador to Pakistan, Donald Blome, reaffirmed the commitment of the United States to supporting Pakistan’s economic reforms and growth. According to a press release from the finance ministry, the discussion revolved around economic cooperation and strengthening bilateral ties.

Blome expressed appreciation for the enduring relationship between the two countries. “The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both sides expressing their desire to further strengthen bilateral relations, especially in the areas of trade and economic collaboration,” the statement added.

Pakistan’s Reform Agenda Discussed

Minister of Finance, Aurangzeb, during the meeting, notified the current happenings regarding the country’s economic plans through Pakistan. The minister added that the government was going toward economic stability. Reforms are being made to move away from the alternating cycles of high and low by improving export-oriented growth.

Aurangzeb thanked the US for supporting Pakistan in securing agreements like the Stand-by Arrangement (SBA) and the Extended Fund Facility (EFF) with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

He also pointed out the potential to boost trade in IT and digital services, emphasising the importance of the US as Pakistan’s biggest trading partner.

Strengthening Ties with China

Apart from that, the Finance Minister also discussed the matters with the Pakistan Ambassador in China Khalil Hashmi. They exchanged views on the possibilities of economic diplomacy and the progress in this regard for improving investor confidence.

Aurangzeb underscored increased opportunities for Pakistan’s broader partnerships with economic growth. Ambassador Hashmi informed him of the efforts being made to strengthen ties with China. Also present at the meeting was Syed Tariq Fatemi, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs.

Such meetings indicate Pakistan’s concern in enhancing global economic ties particularly with the US and China for supporting the reform agenda within Pakistan and for required sustainable growth.

Remains of Four More Pakistanis Retrieved in Greek Boat Mishap

The death toll of Pakistani citizens from the recent Greece boat tragedy has risen to 9 as the authorities found four more bodies of Pakistani nationals. On December 14, 2024, the foreign media reported that a wooden boat carrying migrants capsised off the island of Gavdos in southern Greece. According to the FIA, the latest victims, identified as Shabbir, Zain Ali, and Zeeshan from Narowal, along with Owais Ali from Sialkot, were found near the site of the incident.

The bodies have been transferred from Greece’s Gavados Island to a hospital in Athens for processing. The FIA confirmed that arrangements are being made by the Pakistani Embassy to send the bodies back to Pakistan.

The process is expected to take approximately one week before the remains can be returned to their families in Pakistan. Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the tragedy and provide support to the families of the victims.

On December 22, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) arrested two individuals, including a human smuggler in Gujranwala, in connection with the Greece boat tragedy. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) Chairman Major General (retd) Hafeezur Rehman reaffirmed the authority’s approach to VPN registration. He expressed optimism about receiving numerous applications. He clarified during a Senate Standing Committee meeting that VPNs are not banned in Pakistan, saying, “We have taken a stand on the issue of VPN ban, and I did not allow VPNs to be banned.”

The VPN registration process began on December 19, with two internet service providers already submitting their license applications. During a consultation with the Pakistan Software Houses Association (PASHA), the chairman emphasised adopting international models for a streamlined registration framework. Efforts are underway to ensure a smooth and stakeholder-inclusive registration process.

Meanwhile, Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) Chairman Dr. Raghib Naeemi stated that VPN use is not inherently unlawful or un-Islamic. However, its misuse for illegal or unethical purposes, such as blasphemy or spreading unrest, is both un-Islamic and illegal. He highlighted that Article 19 of the Constitution allows freedom of expression within the bounds of respect for religion, national integrity, and societal harmony.

On the technological front, Pakistan is nearing the installation of a modern undersea cable connecting Africa to South Asia. The 45,000-kilometer-long cable, with a capacity of 180 terabits per second, is expected to significantly boost internet speeds for social media and other online services. South Korea is still reeling from its deadliest aviation disaster, as investigators work to uncover the causes behind the Jeju Air crash that claimed 179 lives at Muan International Airport. The Boeing 737-800, carrying 181 passengers and crew from Thailand, issued a mayday call before belly-landing and erupting into flames.

Black Box Analysis Crucial to the Investigation

Both aircraft’s black boxes were recovered. The preliminary data of the cockpit voice recorder were successfully extracted, and it was converted into an audio format for analysis of communications between the pilots. The flight data recorder is damaged severely. The South Korean Civil Aviation Ministry confirmed that it would be forwarded to the United States for further analysis as its domestic recovery seemed impossible.

This collaboration between the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board and Boeing would provide critical insight into the moments prior to the crash. Initial reports speculated that a bird strike might have caused the crash. However, attention has shifted to potential landing gear failure and the interaction between the aircraft and the airport’s infrastructure.

Govt Increases Petrol, Diesel Prices for Next Fortnight

The Federal Government of Pakistan has announced an increase in petrol and diesel prices. According to a notification issued late on December 31, the price of petrol has been raised by 56 paise per litre. The new price of petrol has been set at Rs252.66 per litre.

Similarly, the price of high-speed diesel has been increased by Rs2.96 per litre. The new price for high-speed diesel is now Rs258.34 per litre. These changes come as part of regular adjustments in fuel prices, influenced by international market trends and local economic conditions.

The government of Pakistan on December 15 announced new petrol and diesel prices. As per details, petrol prices remain stable at Rs252.10 per litre. High-speed diesel prices have decreased by Rs3.05 per litre, with the new price set at Rs255.38 per litre.

In addition, the price of kerosene has decreased by Rs3.32 per litre, with the new price set at Rs161.66 per litre. Light diesel oil prices have also decreased by Rs2.78 per litre, with the new price set at Rs148.95 per litre. The Ministry of Finance has issued a notification regarding the new prices, which will come into effect at 12 am tonight.

According to sources, the price of high-speed diesel has increased by Rs12.14 per litre since October 16. The price of petrol was risen by Rs5.07 per litre during the same period. The government could have reduced the levy to prevent the price hike, but the IMF program restrictions prevented it, sources revealed.

New Year Aerial Firing Injures 29 in Karachi

Celebratory New Year firing in the metropolis left 29 people injured, including two women, police said on Wednesday. The injured were transported to Civil Hospital, Jinnah Hospital and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment. Rescue sources said that stray bullets hit people in Liaquatabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Shah Faisal Colony and Orangi Town.

Law enforcement took action, arresting 30 individuals involved in aerial firing. The Karachi police had earlier issued warnings, saying that anyone caught firing in the air would face charges of attempted murder.

In Lahore, meanwhile, several individuals were also arrested for violating laws under the guise of New Year celebrations, the police said. The crackdown followed incidents of aerial firing in various parts of Lahore.

DIG Operations conducted late-night visits to different areas of the city to oversee law enforcement efforts. In Shad Bagh, police apprehended 15 suspects involved in aerial firing and unruly behaviour, recovering weapons from their possession. Similarly, in Shafiqabad and Ichhra, suspects were taken into custody for participating in aerial firing and disruptive activities.

Celebrations

As the New Year arrived, spectacular fireworks displays lit up the skies of Karachi, Islamabad, Rohri and other cities. While some marked the occasion with resolutions and promises, others celebrated with energetic festivities. In Karachi, dazzling fireworks took place at Port Grand and the Governor House, where a 40-minute-long display captivated onlookers. Sindh Governor Kamran Khan Tessori claimed the event set a global fireworks record.

Rawalpindi and Lahore also joined the celebrations, with concerts and lively gatherings drawing crowds. In Islamabad, festivities continued in F-8 and private housing societies. While in Quetta, the arrival of the New Year was marked by fireworks, aerial firing, and special prayers in churches.

In Azad Kashmir, the New Year was welcomed with fireworks at Zero Point, Keran, along the Line of Control (LoC). A large number of locals and tourists attended the celebrations, which added a unique charm to the region. Meanwhile, in cities such as Hyderabad and Gujranwala, residents also celebrated with enthusiasm, offering prayers for prosperity and peace in the coming year.

China has defended its COVID-19 transparency after the World Health Organisation (WHO) called for more data and access to understand the origins of the pandemic. The disease first emerged in Wuhan in December 2020 and has since caused millions of deaths globally.

Responding to WHO’s statement on Monday, which called it a “moral and scientific imperative” for China to share more information, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said China had made the “largest contribution to global origin tracing research.” She added, “Without holding anything back, we shared our prevention, control and treatment experience.”

Over the years, the WHO has criticised China for lacking transparency. The joint investigation in early 2021, conducted by WHO specialists and Chinese colleagues, favoured the hypothesis that the virus jumped from a bat to a human via an intermediary animal. However, WHO officials have not been able to return to China and continue asking for more data. Mao stated that “more and more clues” suggested COVID-19’s origins had a global scope and that China was “willing to continue working with various parties” to advance scientific origin tracing.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that the world remains vulnerable to new pandemics. Despite lessons learned from COVID-19, countries face challenges in negotiating a treaty on pandemic prevention and response. Key issues include obligations to share pathogens and equitable access to vaccines. The treaty’s deadline is May 2025, as 194 members aim to strengthen global defences against future pandemics.
