PM Shehbaz will go on an official visit to Saudi Arabia from June 5 to 6, 2025. He will be joined by a high-level delegation.

During his visit, Prime Minister Shehbaz is scheduled to meet with His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Saudi Arabia.

The two leaders will have talks focused on strengthening cooperation in trade, investment and the welfare of the Muslim Ummah. They will also discuss ways to promote peace and security in the region.

The Prime Minister will also express Pakistan’s gratitude to the Saudi leadership for their positive role in reducing recent tensions between Pakistan and India.

Focus on Bilateral Ties and Regional Stability

This visit highlights the strong and long-standing partnership between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. The relationship is built on shared religious and cultural values, mutual respect and a history of close cooperation.

The visit shows the shared commitment of both countries to boost economic and diplomatic ties, in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and Pakistan’s national development goals.

These meetings are expected to further strengthen the Pakistan-Saudi Arabia relationship. Moreover, it will create new opportunities for collaboration in different areas.

Meanwhile, United States Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker reaffirmed the strength of Pakistan-US relations on Wednesday.

She spoke at an event in Islamabad celebrating the 249th anniversary of the US Declaration of Independence.

She said, “Tonight is not only a celebration of our independence, but a reflection of the shared values that bind our two nations – liberty, equality, self-governance and the pursuit of happiness.”

The Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif attended the event, along with senior Pakistani officials as well as members of the diplomatic community, business leaders and civil society representatives. Cultural icons were also present at the event.

Baker praised the lasting friendship between the United States and Pakistan.

Why are Pakistanis Risking Everything to Migrate?

Thousands of Pakistanis are taking their lives into their own hands to migrate to Europe, specifically Italy, out of a combination of economic instability, political unrest, and individual insecurity.

Despite the risks, including drowning and exploitation at the hands of smugglers, few feel they have no choice but to undertake these dangerous trips.

Rising Numbers, Rising Risks

Italy is now a top destination for Pakistani immigrants. In 2023, Pakistan made up around 10% of migrants into Italy, more than double the 3% of the previous year. This increase comes with deteriorating conditions in Pakistan, which has encouraged more to look elsewhere for asylum.

Why-are-Pakistanis-Risking-Everything-to-Migrate?
Despite the risks, including drowning, few feel they have a choice.

The journeys undertaken are perilous. Most migrants travel via Iran and Turkey before trying to make the crossing in the Mediterranean Sea. Others take the Central Mediterranean route from Libya, Tunisia, or Egypt.

These crossings tend to be in overcrowded and unsuitable boats, resulting in the loss of several lives. In June 2023, a vessel with approximately 750 migrants, of which more than 200 were Pakistani, sank off the Greek coast, recording one of the most fatal shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea.

A similar incident also took place in December 2024, when media reported that a wooden boat carrying migrants capsized off the island of Gavdos in southern Greece. The FIA found many Pakistani victims near the site of the incident.

Root Causes of Migration

Few decisions are made light-headed. Surveys show that 54% of Pakistani migrants identify violence, insecurity, and conflict as major drivers. Another 36% point to a lack of rights and freedom, and 33% refer to economic factors.

The floods in Pakistan in 2022 also further compounded these challenges, displacing millions and eliminating livelihoods.

For most, migration is the only hope. Most migrants feel they have no choice but to depart their home country in pursuit of a better life.

Why-are-Pakistanis-Risking-Everything-to-Migrate?
Floods in 2022 further compounded challenges, resulting in more people migrating from Pakistan.

The Human Cost

The European journey is dangerous. Migrants are vulnerable to human traffickers who take advantage of their desperation. In January 2025, Moroccan police rescued 22 Pakistani men from a stranded vessel in the Atlantic Ocean.

Sadly, at least 43 others died of hunger, dehydration, and abuse by smugglers.

Survivors describe terrible experiences, such as being packed below deck, where survival chances in the event of capsizing are low. This happened during the June 2023 disaster near Greece, where most Pakistanis were allegedly trapped below deck.

Seeking Solutions

The rising tide of Pakistani migrants confirms the necessity for an all-encompassing resolution. The elimination of the underlying causes of migration, including economic uncertainty and insecurity, is important.

International collaboration is also necessary to fight human trafficking and offer safe, legal avenues for migration.

Unless coordinated action is taken, the senseless loss of life will persist, and the urgency behind Pakistanis risking everything for a brighter tomorrow will not be attended to.

Shaheen, Sufiyan Likely to Return for Pakistan’s Tour of Bangladesh

shaheen-afridi-sufiyan-return-for-pakistan-tour-of-bangladesh

Star fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi and left-arm spinner Sufiyan Muqeem are likely to return to the Pakistan men’s team during their return tour to Bangladesh for a three-match T20I series, set to be played in late July.

Shaheen’s Shot at Redemption

It’s no secret that Shaheen Shah Afridi hasn’t quite looked like his usual self lately. His last appearance in the green shirt came during the T20I series against New Zealand in March, and to be fair, it wasn’t his best outing.

With just two wickets in four matches and an economy rate touching 10.23, it was clear something was off. But here’s the thing — class is permanent, and Shaheen’s fiery spells have bailed Pakistan out on more occasions than we can count.

Now, with a fresh series ahead and a chance to reboot, the left-arm pacer is all set for a comeback. Could this be his moment to silence the doubters? We’ll soon find out.

Sufiyan Muqeem — Quiet but Deadly

While all eyes were on the usual suspects, Sufiyan Muqeem quietly made a statement in the same series against New Zealand. He got only one game, but boy, did he make it count.

The young spinner scalped two wickets while conceding just six runs in two overs — that’s an economy rate of 3.00, folks. That’s not just good, that’s eye-popping in modern T20 cricket.

If he gets a longer rope this time around, Sufiyan could be a real game-changer for Pakistan, especially on Bangladesh tracks that love a bit of spin.

What About Babar?

Ah, the ever-burning question — where does Babar Azam fit in all of this? According to sources, the door is still wide open for the former captain.

In fact, he’s reportedly been assured of future opportunities, which means we might see him back in the squad soon — if not in this tour, then likely the next.

While some fans are eager to see a fresh-look Pakistan, Babar’s class and consistency are hard to ignore, especially in crunch situations. The question now is timing — when, not if, he returns.

What Does China Want With Pakistan’s Donkeys?

what-does-china-want-with-pakistans-donkeys

To many in Pakistan, donkeys are more than animals. They are lifelines. Gulzar, a 50-year-old labourer in Karachi, relies on his donkey to carry iron around the city. He makes as much as Rs1,600 a day, almost half of which goes towards the upkeep of the animal.

Like hundreds of others, Gulzar is concerned about increased costs, high mortality rates, and reduced availability of healthy donkeys.

A Booming Global Demand

While prices soar at home, the demand originates in China. The thriving ejiao industry in China, valued at billions, is built on donkey hide-derived gelatin.

The ingredient, well-known in traditional Chinese medicine, promises to cure fatigue, enhance immune function, and aid in blood deficiency, primarily among women.

What-Does-China-Want-With-Pakistan’s-Donkeys?
Donkeys demand boom in China.

With China’s donkey population dwindling by 80% in the last three decades, it looked towards imports. Following the banning of the donkey skin trade by African countries, China’s next big supplier happened to be Pakistan.

China’s Eyes on Pakistan’s Donkeys

Pakistan exported a total of more than 157,000 hides to China legally in 2023 alone. Chinese businesses now also wish to establish donkey farms within Pakistan, hailing the climate for breeding. This will also further strengthen the economic relationship between the two countries

A written proposal is currently being discussed, and officials indicate that it would be a source of employment and tax income.

However, this commerce is not consequence-free.

Threat to Local Communities

About 36 million Pakistanis rely on equine labour. Donkeys support work in agriculture, waste collection, transport, and brick kilns. Removing these animals from the local areas to export would destroy livelihoods.

Dr. Sher Nawaz from Brooke Pakistan shared stories of families who rent donkeys just to survive. “Losing a donkey often means losing your only income,” he said.

For most owners, donkeys are not an asset—they’re friends. Some won’t even sell them to Chinese buyers. Cultural and ethical tensions increase as slaughterhouses open close to areas such as Gwadar, for export purposes only.

Pakistan has no strong legal safeguards for donkeys. Current animal welfare laws were enacted in 1890 and provide little more than minor penalties for cruelty. Meanwhile, infections such as anthrax and equine flu pose public health risks from uncontrolled slaughter.

A Call for Sustainability

Experts say Pakistan needs to create sustainable breeding and health infrastructure first before trade is enlarged. Others advocate alternatives such as laboratory-cultured collagen to relieve the pressure on donkeys.

But ejiao’s cultural heritage might make it difficult to accept.

In this struggle between tradition, economy, and survival, one thing remains certain: the humble donkey is at the heart of a global and ethical conundrum.

Hajj 2025: Hajj Meets High Tech

hajj-2025-hajj-meets-high-tech

Hajj is the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, and is a mandatory religious duty for all capable Muslims. This year, Hajj 2025 began on June 4 and will end on June 9. This time, the experience is remarkably different from the traditional one.

Problems Faced by Pilgrims in the Past Years

Hajj is one of the biggest religious gatherings around the world and it comes with a cost. By early June, over 1 million visitors had already arrived in Saudi Arabia for the annual Hajj pilgrimage. Having so many people moving around in one comparatively small area has led to problems in the past for pilgrims.

Thousands of pilgrims were killed in stampeding crowds in 1990 and 2015. Even last year, over 1,300 died due to extreme heat. This is because pilgrims often walk up to 65 kilometres a day in 40-to-50 degrees Celsius heat.

There have also been fires, protests, suicides, collapsing buildings and infectious diseases at the Hajj, as well as more everyday problems like people getting lost or having health problems.

Last year’s many deaths were mostly of pilgrims who didn’t have official permission to be there and therefore couldn’t access services like air-conditioned shelters in the extreme heat.

Integration of High Tech in Hajj 2025

This year’s Hajj stands as a testament to Saudi Arabia’s commitment to modernising the pilgrimage.

Saudi Arabia will use drones with thermal imaging as well as artificial intelligence and facial recognition technology to ensure that only those who have Hajj permits are allowed in.

Nusuk System

To avoid overcrowding, Saudi Arabia’s Nusuk website (also a mobile phone application) allows attendees to register to enter certain areas at allotted times. This system includes an electronic identity card and a smart wristband. It will hold information on the user’s identity, travel plans, finances, health and accommodation.

Some of the wristbands have location tracking, monitor the wearer’s blood oxygen levels and heart rate, and can even be used to call for medical help.

Moreover, the Nusuk card must be carried throughout the pilgrimage and is used to access transport and other services. To manage the influx of pilgrims efficiently, biometric capture and registration stations have also been established at border points.

Entry without biometrics won’t be an option anymore.

“All of these technologies are mandatory and those who refuse them are not allowed to perform the pilgrimage,” explains Zeinab Ismail, a researcher and editor at the Lebanon-based digital rights organisation, SMEX.

Robots and AI

Other technological advancements includes Hajj robot guides. Yes, robots will be used to guide visitors around religious sites and give them water, Quran and other essentials. These robots can give advice in up to 11 languages until now (i.e. Manarah 2).

The introduction of AI-powered surveillance and crowd management systems has significantly improved safety and efficiency. Drones will be used for surveilling, and thermal imaging will be used.

Medical services have also seen significant upgrades. AI-assisted emergency response systems ensure timely healthcare, and mobile stroke units have been deployed to address medical emergencies promptly.

Other Technological Advancements

There are also newly paved, more reflective (and therefore cooler) streets, paths that minimise heat for walking comfort. Additionally, shaded walkways and misting fans have been installed in key areas like Mina and Arafat to offer respite from the scorching temperatures.

A special white pilgrim’s gown will be available for pilgrims, it is made from futuristic fabric that keeps the wearer up to 2 degrees Celsius cooler.

To address the challenges posed by extreme heat, Saudi authorities have also implemented the world’s largest mosque cooling system in the Grand Mosque. This will help provide climate-controlled environments for pilgrims.

Health kits and educational materials, developed with the Ministry of Health, are available in at least eight languages, including Arabic, English, French, Urdu, Persian, Indonesian, Malay and Turkish.

Religion and Innovation Must Be Balanced

While technology has undoubtedly enhanced the Hajj experience, it also raises questions about maintaining spiritual sincerity in an age of constant digital connection.

Pilgrims are encouraged to use these tools mindfully, ensuring that technology serves as an aid rather than a distraction from their spiritual journey.

The integration of technology into Hajj 2025 exemplifies how tradition and innovation can coexist, offering a more accessible, safe, and enriching experience for pilgrims worldwide.

World Environment Day: Here’s How You Can Make this Eid al-Adha Eco-Friendly

This year, two significant days come one after the other. World Environment Day is on 5th June, and Eid al-Adha will fall on 6 or 7th June, depending on where you live. It’s a great time to reminisce, rejoice, and safeguard the planet, together!

Here are some easy ways to keep your Eid al-Adha celebrations green and eco-friendly without giving up on tradition.

1. Reduce Food Waste

Plan meals carefully and prepare only what you can eat or give away. I know that Eid al-Adha is a festival of meat and most of us tend to go overboard, but this year, lets try to store leftovers well and donate excess food if you can.

Remember, when food decomposes in landfills, it produces methane—a potent greenhouse gas that harms the environment in so many ways. Reducing waste benefits both humans and the Earth.

2. Select Natural Cleaning Products

Now that our homes and streets are going to be filled with blood stains, it is important that we skip toxic chemical cleaners and opt for safe, homemade alternatives. These can include vinegar, baking soda, and lemon juice.

These natural products clean equally well and don’t contaminate water or harm wildlife.

3. Opt for Reusable Water Bottles

Instead of buying tens of plastic water bottles for dawats, try circulating water in a stainless steel or glass bottle. What we often don’t realise is that how much plastic wastage can be brought down if we simply start being more mindful of the little things.

Plastic is strangling our oceans and streets. It’s about time we take an initiative.

4. Experiment with Plant-Based Meals

Eid al-Adha is all about meat-based meals—mutton, beef, barbeque, and so much more. However, amid all these meaty meals, try incorporating some plant-based meals as well. They can help lower the environmental footprint and also be good for your health.

Even one or two vegetarian meals can make a difference. It’s a kind gesture to the earth as well as to the spirit of giving.

Small Steps, Big Impact

You do not need to change overnight. You just need to make a few conscious choices and help the world—and encourage others to do the same. While we celebrate sacrifice and gratitude on Eid al-Adha, let us also be kind to the earth.

So let this Eid be a turning point—a day of joy, reflection, and sustainability.

India-Pakistan Tensions Cast Shadow Over Asia Cup 2025

pakistan-stance-after-india-champions-trophy-refusal-fusion-formula-pcb-to-release-additional-champions-trophy-2025-tickets-sarfaraz-ahmed-saqlain-mushtaq-asia-cup-2025

Cricket fans across Asia were excited for the ACC Men’s Asia Cup 2025, which was supposed to be the next big thing after the ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025. But now, uncertainty looms large due to the India-Pakistan political standoff.

Just when everyone was gearing up for another mouth-watering India-Pakistan clash, cross-border tensions have once again put the tournament’s fate on shaky ground.

A Tournament Hanging by a Thread

Initially, the six-nation Asia Cup was all set to be hosted by India. But over the past few weeks, reports have trickled in suggesting that India might withdraw due to the political situation. That has caused quite a stir — understandably so.

However, the BCCI was quick to dismiss those reports, quashing the withdrawal rumours. For a moment, it seemed like the storm had passed. But not quite.

In a fresh twist, a top BCCI official told Reuters that the board hasn’t even discussed the Asia Cup internally. “To be honest, we have had no discussions within the board about the Asia Cup,” a senior BCCI official told Reuters.

That’s a big deal. When a tournament of this scale — featuring cricketing heavyweights like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh — is around the corner, and the host board says they haven’t discussed it yet, you know something’s off.

Pakistan’s Response?

You’d think with India uncertain, Pakistan might double down on hosting duties or at least confirm participation. But the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) isn’t offering any concrete assurances either.

“We will cross that bridge when we come to it,” a PCB spokesperson told Reuters.

In other words, they’re waiting to see how things unfold — not exactly a confident statement.

This “wait and see” attitude from both sides only adds more confusion. And the silence from the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), which is headed by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, hasn’t helped clear the air either.

With neither the BCCI nor PCB giving a definitive green light, and with no dates locked in, the Asia Cup 2025 is very much in limbo. The tournament needs quick, clear decisions, but the current lack of urgency is worrying for cricket fans all over Asia.

Is Salman Ali Agha Pakistan’s Next All-Format Captain?

is-salman-ali-agha-pakistan-next-all-format-captain

Just a few months ago, very few would’ve imagined Salman Ali Agha in line for Pakistan’s Test captaincy — let alone all three formats. But here we are, and the buzz is real.

After leading Pakistan to a 3-0 T20I series sweep over Bangladesh, the spotlight is firmly on the 30-year-old all-rounder.

Praised for his calm leadership and game awareness, Salman Ali Agha may be on the brink of scripting one of the most surprising leadership rises in recent Pakistan cricket history.

Let’s break it all down.

From Vice-Captain to All-Format Leader?

Salman was appointed white-ball vice-captain last year — a move many saw as symbolic or long-term. But fast forward to now, and he’s captained Pakistan to a T20I clean sweep, silenced critics, and, most notably, gained the PCB’s attention.

In fact, according to multiple inside sources, the Pakistan Cricket Board is seriously considering handing him the reins in ODIs and possibly even in Tests.

“Salman’s name is being discussed at the highest level,” one source revealed. “Nothing is official yet, but he’s definitely a strong contender for all-format captaincy.”

From Vice Captain to All-Format Captain?

Basit Ali’s Tweet Sets the Internet Ablaze

In a twist that added fuel to the fire, former cricketer Basit Ali took to X (formerly Twitter) and congratulated Salman, hinting he may be Pakistan’s next all-format captain.

That’s a pretty big claim, especially when it comes from a former international who still holds sway in cricketing circles.

While no official confirmation has been made, Basit’s cryptic congratulations have sparked conversations across social media platforms and sports desks alike.

What About Saud Shakeel?

Interestingly, Saud Shakeel was believed to be the frontrunner to take over the Test captaincy from Shan Masood, whose tenure has been underwhelming. With just three wins in 12 Test matches, questions around his leadership were bound to surface.

Although Saud’s name is still in the mix, the emergence of Salman as a strong contender has added a new dimension to the debate.

Rizwan’s ODI Captaincy Also Under Review

Meanwhile, Mohammad Rizwan, who was handed the ODI captaincy in the post-Babar era, may also be on the chopping block. Reports suggest that the PCB is not entirely convinced by his leadership in the 50-over format.

And guess who’s being discussed as his possible replacement? You guessed it — Salman Ali Agha. Having already served as vice-captain in ODIs, his elevation wouldn’t exactly be out of left field. His recent success with the T20I side has only strengthened his case.

Is the Simla Agreement Now a Dead Document?

is-the-simla-agreement-now-a-dead-document

Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has declared the 1972 Simla Agreement invalid and urged Pakistan to treat the Line of Control as a ceasefire line.

“The Simla Accord is now a dead document,” he stated.

“We are returning to the 1948 scenario,” he explained, “when the United Nations designated the Line of Control as a ceasefire line following the truce and its subsequent resolutions.”

He further emphasised, “Looking ahead, such conflicts are likely to necessitate multilateral or even global intervention.”

In this context, Pakistan appears more inclined toward international or multilateral forums for dispute resolution.

He said that the current conditions have brought Pakistan back to its 1948 stance on Kashmir. While the Simla Agreement aimed to guide India and Pakistan toward resolving disputes through bilateral dialogue, India’s unilateral actions have broken that framework.

India’s War Threat and Pakistan’s Defence Readiness

Shifting focus to defence capability, Asif spoke confidently about Pakistan’s military strength. He credited past conflicts for shaping a more prepared defensive force.

“We have turned into a defensive force. Orders for our JF-17 Thunder fighter jets are coming in,” he said.

Afghan Refugees and National Economic Concerns

He also firmly called for the return of Afghan refugees to their country. “Afghans must settle in their own country,” he said. Stressing a lack of national loyalty among them, he added, They have no loyalty to our soil.”

Asif urged the state to act decisively on this matter.

Hajj Mubarak – 5th Pillar Family Takaful Helping People Save for Hajj the Right Way

Hajj is an obligatory act of worship (ibadah) for every adult Muslim who is physically and financially capable and of sound mind.

Hajj: The Fifth Pillar of Islam

Each year, millions of Muslims from around the world gather in the holy city of Makkah to perform Hajj—the sacred pilgrimage that stands as the fifth pillar of Islam.

Hajj is an obligatory act of worship (ibadah) for every adult Muslim who is physically and financially capable and of sound mind. This spiritual journey begins with a sincere niyyat (intention) and includes rituals such as ihram, tawaf, and sa’i.

Pilgrims travel to Mina, experience the profound Day of Arafat, spend the night under the open sky in Muzdalifah, perform the rami (stoning of the devil), offer qurbani (animal sacrifice), complete tawaf al-ifadah and sa’i, and finally return home after tawaf al-wida.

Though physically demanding and financially intensive, Hajj is a life-altering journey that strengthens faith and deepens the spiritual bond with Allah.

A Dream Shared by Millions

Hearing the call:
“Labaik Allahumma Labaik”
…awakens something deep within the soul.

A longing.
A desire.
A hope.
“I wish I could be there.”

For countless Muslims, Hajj is more than a ritual—it’s a dream nurtured for years. But in today’s world, that dream often gets postponed. Rising costs, family responsibilities, and life’s many demands cause many to defer this sacred journey for “someday”—often waiting for old age or “when things settle.”

But remember this:
If you have the means, Hajj is farz (obligatory).
If you can afford a vacation or a new car, then you are likely a Sahib-e-Istita’at—someone upon whom Hajj has already become a duty. Islam encourages performing Hajj while you are young and able. Don’t wait. Make the niyyat. Take the step.

So, How Do You Start Saving for Hajj—The Right Way?

Many people try to save for Hajj using informal methods like committees or rotating savings groups. But with Hajj costs rising each year, these traditional methods may fall short or leave you unprepared.

Zindigi and LDA Launch Plantation Drive to Promote a Greener Future in Lahore.

At Zindigi, we believe that true business strength lies not just in growth, but in purpose. As we mark World Environment Day.

Lahore, [5th June,2025] — To mark World Environment Day, Zindigi powered by JS Bank and LDA launched a large-scale plantation drive today at LDA Avenue 1 Lahore. The initiative, a part of Zindigi’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts, aims to contribute toward environmental sustainability and build a greener Lahore and Pakistan for future generations.

The plantation drive was inaugurated by Atif Ishaque, Chief  Business Officer of Zindigi, along with Vice Chairman LDA Mian Marghoob Ahmed and DG LDA Tahir Farooq. Together, the leadership teams symbolically planted the first saplings, marking the beginning of a collective movement to promote environmental responsibility.

As the world grapples with the intensifying effects of climate change from rising temperatures to extreme weather events Pakistan stands at a critical juncture. Ranked among the top 10 countries most vulnerable to climate change, it is imperative that immediate and long-term actions are taken to restore ecological balance. Tree plantation remains one of the most effective, nature-based solutions to absorb carbon emissions, improve air quality, reduce urban heat, and preserve biodiversity.

DG LDA Tahir Farooq said that the LDA has amended its regulations and made the construction of grey water treatment plants mandatory in one-kanal houses. He emphasized that, with the support of the private sector, development authorities can educate the public and the construction industry to adopt environmentally friendly initiatives and global best practices. DG Tahir Farooq added that the LDA has planted more than 300,000 trees in various schemes with the support of private sector. He appreciated the support of  Zindigi by JS Bank in promoting a greener future.

“At Zindigi, we believe that true business strength lies not just in growth, but in purpose. As we mark World Environment Day, we’re not just planting trees, we’re planting hope, resilience, and responsibility for future generations.” stated Atif Ishaque, Chief Business Officer Zindigi.

On this occasion, Vice Chairman LDA Mian Marghoob Ahmed said that, on the special directions of CM Punjab Maryam Nawaz, the Lahore Development Authority has shifted its focus to promoting eco-friendly initiatives. He said that the LDA, in collaboration with the private sector, is encouraging green buildings, solarization, planned urbanization, and other initiatives to mitigate smog.

This CSR effort by Zindigi not only aligns with UN SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 15 (Life on Land) but also underscores the importance of public-private partnerships in addressing Pakistan’s growing environmental challenges. Through this initiative, Zindigi and LDA are setting a precedent for meaningful collaboration that creates lasting, positive change.

With this plantation drive, Zindigi reiterates its belief in sustainable innovation—not just in digital finance, but in building a better, cleaner world for the generations to come.

Karachi to Face Low-Intensity Earthquakes for the Next 2-3 days: PMD Chief

karachi-to-face-low-intensity-earthquakes-for-the-next-2-3-days-pmd-chief

According to officials from the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Karachi experienced three more low-intensity earthquakes on Tuesday morning, making it a total of 19 mild earthquakes in the past three days.

The tremors, all classified as low to moderate intensity, ranged from 2.1 to 3.6 magnitude on the Richter scale. The strongest tremor, recorded on Sunday, was of 3.6 magnitude, while the weakest was of 2.1.

PMD Director General Mahr Sahibzad Khan, during an appearance on Dawn News TV’s program ‘Doosra Rukh’, said Karachi will continue to experience low-intensity earthquakes for the next two to three days.

“The tremors will continue but not with high intensity. The fault line is not very active. They will end after two to three days,” he added.

He said there is no need for Karachi residents to panic. “There is nothing to worry about for people of Karachi,” he said.

Groundwater Depletion and Tanker Mafia Linked to Tremors

The PMD chief claimed the earthquakes in Karachi are being caused by a lack of groundwater and illegal extraction by the “tanker mafia.”

He explained that Karachi has minor fault lines in areas like Korangi and Malir and the tremors are being felt near those fault lines.

“The main problem in Karachi is that there is no ground water. If you remove the hard rocks, there is only sand,” he said.

Moreover, he added that there is a strong tanker mafia in Karachi. They take out water through pumping or other illegal means.

He said that the pumping is being done over the fault lines, leading to what he called “induced earthquakes.”

Regarding the collapse of a wall at Malir prison and the resulting jailbreak, he said, “It (Malir jail) was located near the epicentre. The intensity is greater in the areas near the epicentre.”

Currently reaching over two million smallholder farmers annually through direct engagement, Bayer is committed to expanding its reach and impact while improving agricultural productivity and promoting sustainable farming practices across Pakistan.

By leveraging HZSL’s on-ground footprint through its Zarai Deras and Zarai Dost Shops, and Bayer’s globally trusted crop science capabilities, this partnership is designed to deliver last-mile impact. Farmers will benefit from greater awareness, accessibility, and affordability of advanced agri-inputs while receiving localized agronomic support. The collaboration also aims to promote responsible usage of crop protection products and encourage adoption of best practices in line with global sustainability goals.

Commenting on the partnership, Mr. Amer Aziz, CEO of HBL Zarai Services Limited, stated:
“At HZSL, we are committed to placing the farmer at the center of Pakistan’s agri-revolution. This collaboration with Bayer Pakistan is a meaningful step toward enabling access to high-quality farm inputs and innovative solutions that directly address the challenges faced by our farming community. Through this collaboration, HZSL and Bayer aim to create an integrated support framework for farmers by combining Bayer’s world-class product line with HZSL’s grassroots service model. With a shared goal to empower farmers, increase yield per acre, and strengthen food security, the partnership represents a major step forward in Pakistan’s agricultural transformation.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Ahmed Ali, Managing Director and CEO of Bayer Pakistan, said:
“At Bayer, we’re focused on getting close to our customers to meet their needs as best possible. For Pakistan’s smallholder farmers, this means ensuring access to the products and services they need to protect and maximize yields, improve their livelihoods, and sustainably feed a growing population. We’re pleased to be partnering with HBL Zarai Services on this vital mission and look forward to leveraging their expertise to serve more farmers, ultimately enhancing overall agricultural productivity and food security.”

This strategic alliance builds on HZSL’s mission to provide free agronomy advisory, rental-based mechanization services, quality input supply, and crop procurement support. It also builds on Bayer’s intent to increase the capacity of smallholder farmers worldwide, in line with the company’s global mission Health for all, Hunger for none.

As both organizations move forward, the partnership is expected to deliver tangible value to smallholder farmers and set new benchmarks in sustainable agricultural development.

New Role, Big Stage: Germany’s Ex-Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, Heads to the UN

German outgoing foreign minister Annalena Baerbock has been chosen as president of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The election was held on Monday and was a rare instance of discord in what is otherwise a ceremonial, symbolic election.

Baerbock was elected with 167 votes in a closed ballot. Fourteen abstained, and seven supported an alternative candidate, Helga Schmid—a career diplomat who had been initially assumed to fill the position.

Baerbock only became Germany’s candidate in March, following her announcement that she was leaving government after the elections in February.

Russia Pushes Back

This year’s election did not take the traditional route of acclamation. Russia objected strenuously to Baerbock’s nomination and insisted on a secret ballot.

Moscow charged that she was biased, had made poor diplomatic decisions, and lacked experience appropriate for the position.

“Baerbock has time and again demonstrated her incompetence,” Russian Deputy Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy told Newsweek last month. “Berlin’s attempt to promote her candidacy betrays open contempt for this organisation.”

A Divisive But Decisive Win

Ignoring the critics, Baerbock won a broad majority. Support for her cut across borders, indicating numerous nations believed she was a strong leader for the Assembly, which speaks for all 193 UN members.

“I will pursue a dialogue of trust with all Member States,” Baerbock stated in her initial address following the vote. “My door will always be open for everyone.”

Her comments seemed aimed at critics and friends both, with vows of openness and inclusivity as beacons of her leadership.

A Symbolic Role with International Spotlight

The General Assembly presidency is symbolic but with a powerful diplomatic glare. The president conducts debates, oversees sessions, and often acts as the voice of international unity—or discord.

Baerbock’s victory puts her at the forefront of international diplomacy at a tense moment. Conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, climate policy arguments, and the regulation of AI are all likely to shape the next session.

What Comes Next

With her experience as a foreign minister and strong human rights and climate activist, Baerbock could try to take those issues global. Though criticised by nations such as Russia, there is evident support from the majority of the international community for her election.

All eyes are now on how she will lead.

Remembering Palestinian Children on the Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression

remembering-palestinian-children-on-the-day-of-innocent-children-victims-of-aggression

On June 4, the world observes the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression. This year, the day carries immense weight as we reflect on the harrowing experiences of Palestinian children in Gaza, whose lives have been irrevocably altered by ongoing hostilities.

To date, more than have been killed in Gaza at the hands of Israel.

A Generation Under Siege

Since the escalation of violence in October 2023, Gaza has witnessed an alarming toll on its youngest residents. Reports indicate that over 16,500 children have lost their lives, with thousands more injured or orphaned.

The relentless airstrikes and ground operations have not only claimed lives but have also decimated the infrastructure essential for children’s well-being.

Dr. Feroze Sidhwa, an American trauma surgeon who volunteered in Gaza, recounted operating in hospitals devoid of basic necessities.

“Children died, not because their injuries were insufferable, but because we lacked blood, antibiotics, and the most basic supplies,” he told the UN Security Council. His testimony underscored the dire medical conditions faced by the injured, many of whom are children.

One in five children under the age of five in Gaza is severely malnourished as a result of Israel

Stories that Echo the Pain

Among the countless tragedies is the story of 11-year-old Yaqeen Hammad, a vibrant social media influencer known for her uplifting videos and humanitarian efforts. Just days before her death in an airstrike, she posted a video asking, “Where is the world?”- a haunting question that lingers in the aftermath of her loss.

In another heart-wrenching incident, Dr Alaa al-Najjar lost nine of her ten children in a single airstrike. Her surviving son, 11-year-old Adam, remains critically injured.

These personal stories bring to light the profound grief and resilience of families enduring unimaginable hardships.

Schools and hospitals, traditionally considered sanctuaries during conflicts, have not been spared. A drone strike on a school shelter in Khan Younis resulted in the deaths of five individuals, including children.

A Call to Conscience

The International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression serves as a global call to action. It urges the international community to recognise and address the plight of children caught in conflicts.

The stories emerging from Gaza are not just statistics; they are poignant reminders of the human cost of war.

As we commemorate this day, it is imperative to amplify the voices of those affected and to advocate for immediate measures to protect children in conflict zones. The resilience of Palestinian children amidst adversity is a testament to their strength, but it also highlights the urgent need for peace and protection.

In remembering the innocent lives lost and the futures jeopardised, let us reaffirm our commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of all children. Let’s ensure that  their voices are heard too, their needs met too and their lives valued too.

Is Fawad Chaudhry Involved in an Illegal Land Deal?

is-fawad-chaudhry-involved-in-an-illegal-land-deal

In a land acquisition matter, an Anti-Corruption Court in Rawalpindi released bailable arrest warrants for ex-federal minister Fawad Chaudhry. Special Judge Anti-Corruption, Khawar Rashid, ordered police to apprehend him and deliver him before the court by June 30.

Fawad Chaudhry was charged with a case by the Punjab Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE). It concerns claims of unlawful land grab for a private residential society in the Dina neighbourhood of Jhelum, close to GT Road. The FIR was registered in April.

The FIR claims Fawad Chaudhry misused his power to aid in the transfer of public property to a private housing complex. The lawsuit asserts that he used his official capacity to directly aid this land transaction.

Fawad left Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in May 2023, although he had been a top leader there. Even after leaving, he had remained involved in party business and conveyed PTI’s position on several platforms.

PTI, however, has officially severed all relations with Fawad Chaudhry. After a meeting between PTI founder Imran Khan and Barrister Gohar at Adiala Jail, this decision followed.

Imran Khan clearly instructed, publicly dissociating the party from Fawad Chaudhry at this conference. Following his instruction, PTI declared its full dissociation from the former minister.

Doubts over Fawad’s political career have been brought about by this decision by Imran Khan. Though separated, he had actively upheld PTI’s values, but this public disavowal could have long-lasting consequences for his contribution to national politics.

Bond is Back: 007 First Light Reveal Coming this Week

Finally, after five long years of nothing but silence, IO Interactive is ready to announce its James Bond game. First announced in 2020 as Project 007, the game now officially known as 007 First Light.

IO Interactive revealed the game in a suspenseful social media post last week.

The photograph features a silhouette—presumably Bond—illuminated by one beam. Text states “First Light 007” and the hashtag #EarnTheNumber, which refers to the game’s overarching theme: Bond’s development into 007.

IO Interactive revealed the game in a suspenseful social media post last week.

A New Beginning for Bond

In contrast to previous Bond games, 007 First Light isn’t inspired by any film. It’s an original story, beginning with James Bond prior to him becoming the legendary agent. This will be a complete origin story, centred on how Bond gets his license to kill—and his well-known codename.

IOI Hitman fans will identify the studio’s talent for stealth, intrigue, and refined gameplay. With 007 First Light, they are looking to apply that same level of expertise to the MI6 universe.

Big Plans, Bigger Expectations

IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak has lofty goals for this new era. He recently teased that 007 First Light could be the first in a trilogy. But that’s at a price: the Hitman series is on hold while the studio focuses on Bond.

The Hitman series is on hold while the studio focuses on Bond.

Although the teaser did not provide any gameplay video or story information, many anticipate a full reveal at one of the prominent gaming presentations this week—potentially Summer Game Fest or some other June show.

Platforms and a Surprise Addition

In addition to PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, 007 First Light is also coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. This cross-platform launch implies that the studio is aiming for a large player base, and it could indicate scalable performance across platforms.

IO Interactive is being secretive about most of the details but hype for the reveal has been building rapidly. The initial announcement in 2020 created great anticipation, and fans have since waited in eagerly. Now, the wait is nearly over.

With 007 First Light, IOI is not only rebooting Bond—they’re remaking him. The game promises a more mature and personal portrayal of Britain’s most legendary spy. And this time around, players won’t merely be 007; they’ll have to prove it.
