A preliminary investigation report has found that there was confusion in the cockpit shortly before an Air India flight 171 crashed last month, killing 260 people.
The aircraft’s engine fuel cut-off switches had flipped almost simultaneously, cutting off fuel to both engines and causing the plane to lose power.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner was en route from Ahmedabad to London when it crashed shortly after take-off.
According to the report released by India’s Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), the aircraft immediately began losing thrust and started descending.
The report highlights that the engine fuel cut-off switches flipped from ‘run’ to ‘cut-off’ right after take-off, starving the engines of fuel.
However, there was no emergency situation that would have required such an action. The report does not state how or why the switches flipped.
Experts said it was unlikely a pilot could accidentally move these switches.
“If they were moved by a pilot, why?” said U.S. aviation safety expert Anthony Brickhouse.
According to U.S. expert John Nance, the switches flipped just one second apart, roughly the time it takes to move one and then the other manually.
He stated that, under normal circumstances, pilots would never use these switches during take-off.
Pilots’ Final Conversation
In the final moments, cockpit voice recordings captured one pilot asking the other why he had cut the fuel.
“The other pilot responded that he did not do so,” the report states.
It does not specify which pilot made the Mayday call or who said what.
CCTV footage showed the ram air turbine, a backup energy source, had deployed shortly after lift-off, suggesting the engines lost power almost immediately.
At the crash site, investigators found the fuel switches back in the ‘run’ position and signs that the engines had attempted to restart before the aircraft crashed at low altitude.
The AAIB report raised concerns about the placement of the fuel cut-off switches but said there was no evidence that Boeing or engine manufacturer GE was at fault.
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board thanked Indian officials for their cooperation.
It noted that the report did not recommend any action for Boeing 787 operators or for GE engines.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said it would follow the facts and address any safety risks identified.
Boeing said it would continue to support the investigation and Air India.
GE Aerospace did not respond immediately.
Who Were the Pilots?
Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, the 56-year-old pilot-in-command (PIC), had extensive experience, with a total of 15,638 flying hours—8,596 of those on the Boeing 787, including 8,260 hours as PIC.
The co-pilot, or first officer, was Clive Kunder, aged 32.
He had accumulated 3,403 flying hours, including 1,128 hours on the B787, all in the role of co-pilot.
His endorsements included the C172 and PA-34 as PIC, and the A320 and B787 as co-pilot.
On the day of the accident, Kunder was the pilot flying the Dreamliner, while Sabharwal was acting as the pilot monitoring.
Sabharwal was responsible for supporting the flight through communication with air traffic control and monitoring the aircraft’s systems.
Air India’s Safety Record Under Scrutiny
The crash has added pressure on Tata Group, which took over Air India in 2022 and has been working to improve its image and upgrade its fleet.
India’s aviation regulator has warned Air India multiple times for safety rule violations.
It flagged overdue checks on three Airbus planes and “serious violations”of pilot duty timings.
The European Union Aviation Safety Agency also plans to investigate Air India Express, a budget carrier, after Reuters reported the airline delayed replacing engine parts and falsified records.
India wants to become a global aviation hub like Dubai and is relying on growth in the aviation sector to help achieve broader development goals.
Second-by-Second Timeline of Flight 171’s Last Moments:
08:07:33 [GMT]: Cleared for takeoff from Ahmedabad’s runway 23.
08:07:37: Aircraft begins takeoff roll.
08:08:33: Aircraft reaches V1 (153 knots).
08:08:35: Aircraft achieves Vr (155 knots) for rotation.
08:08:39: Lift-off registered.
08:08:42: Aircraft peaks at its maximum recorded speed of 180 knots; both engine-fuel switches abruptly transition to “cutoff”.
08:08:47: Engines lose power; RAT deploys to provide emergency hydraulics.
08:08:52: Engine 1 fuel switch is returned to “run”.
08:08:54: APU inlet door begins to open (auto-start initiates).
08:08:56: Engine 2 fuel switch also moved to “run”.
08:09:05: Pilot transmits “MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY”.
08:09:11: Final data recorded; aircraft hits the ground.
According to Saturday’s report, at this stage of the investigation, there is no need for airlines or engine makers to take any action regarding the Boeing 787-8 planes or GE GEnx-1B engines. Further investigation is under way.

If you’re a pizza lover in Karachi, you already know that Karachi doesn’t play when it comes to pizza. This city is filled with pizza joints that people swear by. But there’s always one name that gets dropped in foodie debates: Redbrick Pizzeria.
So, does Redbrick really serve the best pizza in Karachi? This is a very subjective matter, and to form a proper opinion, we need to look at all the other options too.
Let’s go through a list of the most loved pizza places in the city, based on personal experience (yes, I’ve tried almost all of them because someone had to do it).
Redbrick Pizzeria
The vibe was cosy and home-like but slightly upscale. It also has that signature smell of wood-fired dough hitting the air as soon as you walk in.
Redbrick’s wood-fired pizzas definitely look the part. They are crispy with slightly charred edges and a thin, chewy base. Their Truffle Mushroom and Redbrick Special are fan favourites, and you can taste the quality of the ingredients.
I’ll be real, I loved it. The flavours were deep, and the crust was so airy, you could eat a whole pie. It feels like a pizza made with intention. If you’re going for quality, Redbrick is definitely worth the hype.
Who doesn’t know the vibe of Xanders? The infamous restaurant has modern café vibes that immediately made me regret not bringing my friends in with me.
The Pizza here was more of a gourmet flatbread-style pizza, with thin crusts and bold flavours. Try their Pepperoni or Chicken Jalapeno if you are going there for the first time.
I ordered the Chicken Jalapeño pizza, and honestly, it was SO GOOD. It was light and flavourful in the best way possible. It was satisfying, but not the greasy kind of satisfying. Go for it if you want a more elevated, less messy, and aesthetic pizza experience.
The vibe is not so over the top, but it wasn’t bad either. It was understated and simple.
The pizza is a happy medium between traditional and comfort-style. Their crust is chewy with a crispy bottom, and they don’t shy away from generous toppings.
I had their Shrimp pizza on a random night and was genuinely surprised. You don’t hear about Napoli Pizza in every foodie thread, but you should. I think the Pizza place is super underrated and deserves more attention.
Ah, yes, our favourite all-day café with great coffee and surprisingly great pizza.
Their pizza is on the thinner side (which I personally prefer more) and full of flavour. More of a café-style flatbread pizza, but done right.
I ordered their smoked chicken pizza during a brunch hangout, and I wasn’t expecting much. However, it was fresh, crispy, and hit all the right notes. Would I go there just for the pizza? Maybe not. But if I’m already there, I’m definitely getting one.
They are known for their thick-crusted pizzas that have an insane cheese pull and giant slices. Dancing Fajita is their signature, according to many.
It’s nostalgic for me. I’ve grown up eating Broadway, and while it’s not the most “authentic” pizza, it’s a solid option when you want something heavy, cheesy, and comforting.
My personal winner? Redbrick Pizza all the way. It’s not trying to be everything to everyone and has its own unique vibe. That being said, Xander’s is easily my second choice.
Pizza is personal. At the end of the day, what’s “best” depends on your mood, budget, and cravings, too. Try your own and maybe you’ll discover a hidden gem too.

During its “Galaxy Unpacked” event, Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold 7, a remarkable evolution in foldable technology.
Pre-orders have already begun, almost immediately after the groundbreaking reveal. The base price in USD is $1,999, a $100 jump from the previous generation.
This model is expected to reaffirm Samsung’s dominance in the competitive market for foldable gadgets, which have gained popularity in recent years.
Thinner, Lighter, and Smarter Than Its Predecessor
Upon an initial glance at the Galaxy Z Fold 7, you may not appreciate a significant difference from the Z Fold 6, but it is a dramatic upgrade.
With an unfolded thickness of 4.2 mm and a folded thickness of 8.9mm, the ZFold 7 is much slimmer than its predecessor. Weighing 215g, it is also lighter.
In terms of durability, the ZFold 7 has an enhanced build Grade 4 titanium lattice, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the back, and Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 on the cover screen.
The 200 Megapixels (MP) main sensor has significantly enhanced the camera system, elevating the degree of detail and density of colour observed in images.
The model has also received rave reviews for effective AI integration. Gemini Live provides an AI-driven interface that will facilitate multitasking and functionality.
Samsung is renowned for its foldable gadgets.
Compelling Foldable with Trade-offs
The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is thin, light, and smart. With leading-edge camera technology and deep AI integration, it will enhance the user experience.
However, there are some trade-offs.
Approaching two thousand USD, the high price could be an issue for many potential buyers. Furthermore, battery life remains modest, retaining the 4,400 mAh dual-cell battery
The model has also lost its S Pen support, which is likely to disappoint many students and graphic designers. This is a major downgrade from its predecessors.
For users who want the thrill of real multitasking, premium build, and cutting-edge AI tools in a portable form factor, the Fold 7 is a clear leap forward. But if you’re price-sensitive or rely heavily on stylus input, it may still fall short.
The US and China have been embroiled in a fierce trade war as both superpowers strive for global economic domination. In recent years. AI infrastructure has dominated the economic forum.
Nvidia, a US chip designer, has dominated markets in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. However, a new competitor has emerged that threatens Nvidia’s monopoly.
Huawei Technologies is expanding its outreach by penetrating the Middle Eastern market of AI chips, currently ruled by Nvidia.
Huawei Reached Out to Potential Clients in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Thailand
Huawei has pitched its older-generation Ascend 910B AI chips to governments and enterprises in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Saudi Arabia, and Thailand.
The Chinese company is offering small-scale offerings, with estimates of chips in the low thousands, suggesting a modest intent to initiate a foothold in the Middle East.
Nvidia’s AI chips are more advanced than Huawei’s Ascend generation offerings. Still, even limited adoption of the Chinese company’s chips could undermine Nvidia’s stronghold over the market in the Middle East.
Huawei is also offering remote access to CloudMatrix 384, which has been built with more advanced chips. However, the system isn’t export-ready yet due to supply shortages.
The penetration strategy is yet to bear fruit. The UAE has shown a lack of interest in Huawei’s chips. Prominent institutions like Mohamed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence have remained indifferent.
Discussions with Saudi Arabia and Thailand are still on the table, but the latter’s stance remains uncertain. Nonetheless, there have been no official reports of contract acquisitions.
Huawei is attempting to break Nvidia’s monopoly.
Huawei’s Expansion Seems Like a Strategic Test
Huawei’s strategy to penetrate the AI chip market in the Middle East revolves around the company’s desire to reduce dependence on China’s domestic market, and diversify its customer base.
There is also an evident motivation to oppose the dominance of American tech giants like NVIDIA. However, the lacklustre response from markets such as the UAE presents a unique hurdle.
In addition to providing advanced AI hardware, Huawei needs to assure customers of their reliability and sustainability amid geopolitical risks.
Huawei’s ambitions serve as a case study for China, exploring the superpower’s ability to compete in advanced technology industries under trade sanctions and geopolitical tensions.
In the world of artificial intelligence, not all models are created equal. Some systems are based on complete transparency, while others, like Black Box AI, for example, keep their decision-making under wraps. But what exactly is Black Box AI, and why is it both powerful and controversial?
Black Box AI refers to complex artificial intelligence systems whose internal workings are not easily understood, even by their creators. Here is a brief overview to get you an idea of the system.
What is Black Box AI – An Overview
A black box, in a general sense, is an impenetrable system. While inputs and outputs can be observed, the decision-making process within remains a “black box,” making it difficult to understand how the AI arrived at its conclusions.
The Black box AI models might also create problems related to flexibility (updating the model as needs change), bias and vested interest (incorrect results that may offend or damage some groups of humans), accuracy validation (hard to validate or trust the results), and security (unknown flaws make the model susceptible to cyberattacks).
In Europe, a high-level group of experts has even proposed instituting “seven requirements for trustworthy AI” as a way to address what the group calls “a major concern for society.”
Think it’s not that deep? Well, think of it this way: You ask AI about a medical condition and it, in turn, suggests a questionable response, or you ask something related to your beliefs and it gives you a response that completely disrespects and shatters your ideologies. Will you then not want to know the reason behind it?
Imagine how it will feel, after all this, the same AI that hurt your beliefs also refuses to give you an explanation.
How Does Black Box AI Work?
Black Box AI uses algorithms that mimic the human brain, especially deep learning architectures like neural networks. These systems process vast amounts of data, recognise patterns, and “learn” through trial and error over time without clear, explainable logic.
The more layers, the more sophisticated the model is, but here is a fallout: it also becomes difficult to decipher why it made a particular decision.
Here’s how it works in a nutshell:
Training Phase: The AI is fed a large dataset and “learns” patterns by adjusting internal para, and it, in turn, suggests a questionable response, or you ask something related to your beliefs, meters.
Decision Phase: Once trained, the AI can make predictions or classifications based on new input.
No Clear Trail: Unlike traditional programming, we can’t see exactly why it made a certain decision.
So while the outputs are often impressively accurate, the lack of visibility makes it hard to trust the system, especially in high-stakes scenarios. The black box is also a black hole when it comes to logic.
Why are Black Box AI Models Used?
Despite their lack of transparency, Black Box AI models are popular for a reason. Their complexity enables them to deliver exceptional results in many domains.
1. They Deliver Unmatched Accuracy and Performance
Black Box models, especially deep learning systems, often outperform traditional AI methods. Their ability to detect subtle patterns in data makes them ideal for tasks like image recognition, natural language processing and predictive analytics.
In fields like medical diagnostics, fraud detection and autonomous driving, these models consistently outperform traditional rule-based systems. When the goal is peak accuracy, businesses are often willing to accept a bit of mystery in exchange for better results.
2. They Handle Massive, Complex Datasets
Whether it’s analysing millions of financial transactions or medical records, Black Box AI thrives on big data. Their layered structure helps them digest and learn from complicated data types. The more data you throw at a Black Box AI, the better it gets.
This ability makes them invaluable in areas like coding, genomics and finance recommendations.
3. They Protect Intellectual Property
One of the biggest reasons companies favour Black Box AI is secrecy. For companies developing proprietary models, the “black box” nature can act as a shield, preventing competitors from replicating their systems. It’s a strategic way to protect innovation.
Sure, this lack of transparency might be frustrating for regulators and end users, but for businesses? It improves the confidentiality of data.
4. They Reduce Human Bias
While AI can certainly inherit bias from its training data, it doesn’t have personal opinions, political leanings, or a bad mood. Basically, no human subjectivity, so the AI-driven results are entirely objective and based on statistics and real-time data.
Properly trained AI can help eliminate the personal biases that humans might bring into decision-making, especially in hiring, medical diagnosis, or loan approvals.
5. They Scale Exceptionally Well
Once trained, Black Box models can process new data in real-time, making them highly scalable for commercial use and overtaking human capabilities. Whether it’s approving loan applications, analysing customer sentiment, or detecting cybersecurity threats, these models operate at a scale that would be impossible for human analysts.
Businesses love them because they automate complex tasks while maintaining (or improving) accuracy.
Issues With Black Box AI
As powerful as Black Box AI is, it comes with serious concerns, especially when it’s used in sensitive areas like healthcare, law enforcement, or finance.
1. AI Bias
Suppose the deep learning neural networks or training data contain biased information as a reflection of conscious or unconscious prejudices on the part of the developers. In that case, the AI will absorb and amplify those biases. Since we can’t see how it makes decisions, detecting and correcting this bias becomes difficult.
For example, AI is getting used to draw a conclusion on a certain medical research, but the data it is fed only considers male problems, genetics and issues, even when the conclusion is to be applied to all genders alike. What will happen next?
The conclusion will be reached, but gender differences will be ignored, and since it doesn’t provide any transparency, chances are that this issue gets unnoticed and the findings are applied to all generically when it was never generic to start with.
How AI Systems Amplify Bias
2. Lack of Transparency and Accountability
The complexity of black box AI models can prevent developers from properly understanding and auditing them, even if they produce accurate results. Such a lack of understanding leads to reduced transparency and minimises a sense of accountability.
When AI makes a critical decision like rejecting a loan application, there’s often no explanation available. That’s problematic for users and regulators alike.
Here is how a white box AI model would have worked in comparison:
Stage
Details
White Box AI
A form of Artificial Intelligence that is explainable and transparent.
Machine Learning Model
– Uses explainable algorithms- Operates in a transparent manner
– Builds trust in AI systems- Easier to debug and improve models- Complies with regulations (e.g., GDPR)- Enables ethical AI practices- Supports fairness and accountability
3. Lack of Flexibility
Black Box systems are trained for specific tasks. Making them switch or adapt to a new domain is difficult and usually requires retraining the entire model from scratch.
If the model needs to be changed for a different use case, then the update might require a lot of work.
4. Difficult to Validate Results
In traditional systems, you can trace the logic to validate a result. With Black Box AI, you often have to trust the outcome without truly understanding it, which isn’t ideal in regulated industries.
This is one reason why it’s not advisable to process sensitive data using a black box AI model.
5. Security Flaws
Since the internal logic is opaque, it’s hard to detect if a model has been tampered with or misled by adversarial inputs, making it vulnerable to security threats.
For instance, the developer or a third party could change the data to influence the model’s judgment so that it makes incorrect or even dangerous decisions. And since there’s no way to reverse engineer the model’s decision-making process, it will be almost impossible to stop it from making bad decisions.
When Should Black Box AI Be Used?
Despite the concerns, there are specific scenarios where Black Box AI makes sense:
When high accuracy is more important than the ability to explain (e.g., facial recognition).
In environments with massive data that’s too complex for rule-based systems.
For commercial applications where IP protection is a priority.
The key is ethical and responsible deployment. Transparency tools like explainable AI (XAI) and model interpretability frameworks are helping bridge the trust gap.
Black Box AI Applications
Black Box AI is already embedded in many industries we interact with daily, even if we don’t realise it.
Automotive
Self-driving cars use Black Box AI to navigate streets, identify obstacles, and make split-second decisions that are far too quick and complex for traditional systems.
Manufacturing
Predictive maintenance and smart automation in factories rely on deep learning models to spot equipment issues before they cause downtime.
Financial Services
From fraud detection to credit scoring, banks use Black Box models to make fast, data-driven decisions that would take humans hours or sometimes days.
Healthcare
Medical imaging, diagnostics, and personalised medicine benefit from AI’s pattern recognition abilities, but also raise ethical concerns due to the lack of explainability.
Final Verdict
Black Box AI, like other AI models in the world (i.e ChatGPT and DeepSeek), is a double-edged sword. It offers incredible power, speed, and performance, but at the cost of transparency and trust.
As AI continues to shape industries and lives, the challenge is to strike the right balance between leveraging its capabilities and ensuring ethical/explainable use.

Pakistan police arrested 149 people during a raid on a scam call centre in Faisalabad. The National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) launched the operation after receiving a tip-off. Authorities confirmed that the gang tricked people using fake investment offers.
The group included 78 Pakistanis, 48 Chinese, 8 Nigerians, 4 Filipinos, 2 Sri Lankans, 6 Bangladeshis, 2 Myanmar nationals, and 1 Zimbabwean. The NCCIA also reported that 18 of those arrested were women. These individuals convinced people to invest small amounts, then demanded larger sums.
The scammers first gave fake profits to gain trust. A police report said, “The charged individuals ran WhatsApp groups where they lured ordinary people by assigning small investment tasks like subscribing to different TikTok and YouTube channels.” The report also added, “Later, they shifted them to Telegram links for further online tasks requiring larger investments.”
Muhammad Sajid, a Pakistani victim, shared his story with BBC Urdu. He joined a Telegram group with thousands of members and felt impressed by the company’s setup. Over time, he gave more than 3.138 million rupees ($36,600) in separate payments.
The NCCIA raided the location on Tuesday and seized hundreds of computers, servers, crypto exchange devices, and foreign SIM cards. Police said that the centre operated from the house of Malik Tehseen Awan, the former head of Faisalabad’s power grid. Despite this, officials have not arrested him yet.
On Wednesday, the police presented all 149 suspects in court. The judge gave NCCIA custody of 87 suspects for five days. Meanwhile, the court sent the remaining 62 suspects to jail on judicial remand until 23 July.
This case highlights how scammers use social media and messaging apps to trap victims. The NCCIA explained that fake returns, online tasks, and Telegram groups formed the core of the fraud. The agency continues to investigate further leads from the raid.

Pakistan’s white-ball head coach, Mike Hesson, has confirmed that he is actively involved in finalising the national squad. After months of speculation and controversy, it turns out the head coach and captain now do have a seat at the selection table.
Speaking to the media during Pakistan’s pre-tour camp for the Bangladesh series, Hesson offered a rare glimpse into how team selection works under the current PCB setup.
“I am part of the selection panel. Yes, I am,” Hesson said. “The selectors of the selection panel select a squad of 20 players, and then the coach and captain present 15 to the chairman.”
Remember Gary Kirsten’s Exit?
This newfound power for Hesson and T20I captain Salman Ali Agha comes in sharp contrast to what Gary Kirsten experienced just a year ago.
Kirsten, the former World Cup-winning coach, joined Pakistan in April 2024 as the white-ball coach. But his stint was short-lived, and not because of results. Rather, he felt handicapped.
“I realised quite quickly I wasn’t going to have much of an influence,” Kirsten had admitted in an interview. “Once I was taken off selection and asked to take a team and not be able to shape the team, it became very difficult as a coach.”
His resignation came shortly after Pakistan’s squads for the Australia and Zimbabwe tours were announced, without him or then Test coach Jason Gillespie having any say.
Gillespie, too, would resign soon after, citing a “sour taste” left by the experience.
Even Rizwan Had Complaints
It wasn’t just the foreign coaches who felt sidelined. ODI captain Mohammad Rizwan also voiced his frustration after Pakistan’s series defeat to New Zealand earlier this year. He publicly stated he had no authority in the selection process, a glaring red flag for a player expected to lead from the front.
So, when someone like Hesson confirms that both he and the captain are now actively shaping the final 15-man squad, it’s a pretty big deal.
What’s Changed?
The PCB has clearly tweaked its internal structure, perhaps realising that handing over a team to coaches without giving them the power to shape it is a recipe for failure.
The new system, involving coach and captain input, not only brings accountability but also promotes cohesion between the team strategists and the selectors.
Whether this shift is permanent or simply a case of “right people, right time” remains to be seen. But for now, it seems that Mike Hesson and Salman Ali Agha are getting exactly what Kirsten, Gillespie, and Rizwan once asked for.

Get ready, folks, your dinner in Dubai now might come with a code and a prompt. Yes, you heard me right. AI truly is taking the world by storm.
Dubai has always been a city of “firsts,” from the tallest tower, the most extravagant shopping malls, and the fastest police cars. And now? It’s home to the Middle East’s first restaurant operated by an AI chef.
WOOHOO, a restaurant that bills itself as “dining in the future,” is set to open in September in central Dubai, a stone’s throw from the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.
Meet Chef Aiman: Dubai’s First AI Chef
Food at WOOHOO will be assembled by humans, for now. Still, everything else will be designed by a culinary language called “Chef Aiman.”
Aiman (a portmanteau of “AI” and “man”) is trained on decades of food science research, molecular composition data and over a thousand recipes from cooking traditions around the world, said Ahmet Oytun Cakir, one of WOOHOO’s founders.
Chef Aiman is an advanced AI system created by the tech-food company Gastronaut. It’s trained on thousands of recipes, scientific food data, and techniques from cuisines worldwide. Aiman is the ultimate food nerd and will never forget a single ingredient.
However, don’t worry, Chef Aiman isn’t tossing your salad or searing your steak itself. It’s more like the mastermind behind the scenes, coming up with new, creative, and surprisingly complex recipes. The actual cooking? That’s still handled by humans.
The model’s job is to break the cuisine down to its component parts like texture, acidity and umami. And then reassemble it into unusual flavour and ingredient combinations according to Aiman’s developers.
These prototypes are then refined by human cooks who taste the combinations and provide direction, in an effort led by renowned Dubai-based chef Reif Othman. The team gives feedback, which Aiman uses to learn and improve.
Will AI Replace Chefs?
Don’t worry, nothing beats the soul and heart that a human puts into a dish. And that’s exactly the point here.
Chef Aiman isn’t here to replace anyone. Instead, it’s designed to collaborate with chefs to push creative boundaries and help reduce kitchen stress.
Chef Khimraj Nepali discusses a recipe with AI Chef Aiman in Dubai.
Think of it as a high-tech sous-chef who never forgets, never tires, and always has a wild new idea up its sleeve.
The team behind it believes AI can help kitchens everywhere become more efficient, more sustainable, and more inspired. Eventually, the goal is to bring this tech to other restaurants around the world.
In a city known for pushing boundaries, this might just be Dubai’s boldest food experiment yet.

Pakistan’s head coach, Mike Hesson, has stepped forward to clear the air on the rumours that Babar Azam might return to the T20I team as a wicket-keeper.
Over the past week, social media went into overdrive with claims that Hesson had suggested Babar Azam add wicket-keeping to his skill set in order to reclaim a regular place in Pakistan’s T20I side.
The story quickly snowballed, sparking memes, debates and concerns about the direction of the team.
But on the sidelines of Pakistan’s training camp, Mike Hesson put that speculation to rest.
“Babar Azam is not being considered as a wicket-keeping option. Not sure where that came from,” Hesson clarified to the media.
“There’s been a lot of chatter around this, but Babar is working to secure his place in the side as an opening batter.”
So, What Is Babar’s Role Now?
While Babar Azam won’t be donning the gloves, his spot at the top of the order isn’t guaranteed either. The competition is heating up.
“If Babar could secure his place in the team, he would play alongside Fakhar Zaman or Saim Ayub,” Hesson explained. “So he’s competing for that spot.”
Babar was notably absent from Pakistan’s recent T20I series against Bangladesh and hasn’t been named in the squad for the return tour later this month either.
However, he has been called up for the pre-series training camp, along with other senior players like Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Naseem Shah and Mohammad Wasim Jr.
Strike Rate Is the Real Battle
Perhaps the most telling part of Hesson’s press conference was his frank assessment of Pakistan’s T20 batting approach.
“There’s a good reason why our ranking in T20 cricket is as low as it is — our strike rates are not high enough,” he admitted.
Hesson made it clear that the modern T20 game demands a more aggressive approach and that Pakistan has lagged behind in adapting to that reality.
“It’s not just about going from a strike rate of 125 to 150 — it’s about increasing what you can offer. We’re often 30-40 runs short, and we need to fix that.”
He emphasised that Babar, like many others in the team, has the potential to adapt and evolve — and that work is already underway.
“In the last month or so, he’s made some really good changes. I’m here to help him, and everyone else, make those improvements.”
What Next for Babar Azam?
Babar’s absence from the T20I squad has been viewed as a signal, the selectors want a new approach, a new energy, and perhaps, new leadership. But Hesson’s comments suggest the door isn’t closed.
If Babar can modernise his T20 game, especially in terms of strike rate and adaptability, he still has a shot at reclaiming his spot.
However, one thing is confirmed now that Babar Azam isn’t about to turn into a wicketkeeper. That rumour has been binned.

South Africa’s Wiaan Mulder made headlines earlier this week after he declared his team’s innings on 367 not out, just 33 runs shy of the iconic 400* of legendary Brian Lara.
Mulder led the Proteas for the first time in Test cricket. What followed was nothing short of historic. His unbeaten 367 not only became the highest individual score by a South African in Tests, surpassing Hashim Amla’s legendary 311*, but also pushed the Proteas into a dominant position.
Respecting the Greats
When Mulder called for the declaration, many assumed he might have misread the situation. After all, the coveted 400 was within touching distance. But soon after, he clarified that the decision was intentional.
“Brian Lara is a legend. For someone to keep that record, it is special,” Mulder said.
“I spoke to Shuks (Shukri Conrad), and we agreed on letting the legends keep that. Lara keeping that record is exactly the way it should be.”
In a sport where personal milestones often overshadow team goals, Mulder’s humility stood out like a cover drive on a slow day.
The Gayle Reaction and the Lara Response
Naturally, not everyone saw it the same way. Former cricketers, including West Indies powerhouse Chris Gayle, didn’t hold back. Gayle called the declaration a “blunder” and said Mulder had “panicked”.
But then came the voice that mattered most, Brian Charles Lara himself. Once the dust had settled, Mulder revealed a quiet moment that changed everything, a conversation with Lara.
“He said to me I’m creating my own legacy and I should have gone for it,” Mulder shared.
“He said records are there to be broken and he wishes if I’m ever in that position again, I actually go and score more than what he had.”
Talk about grace meeting greatness. Even Lara, whose record had just been protected, showed nothing but encouragement and class.
Legacy Over Landmarks
Wiaan Mulder could’ve had his name at the top of the list. But he chose to honour the game and the legends who came before him. That’s rare. And in doing so, he’s carved out a legacy that isn’t defined by numbers, but by values.
“That was an interesting point of view from his side, but I still believe I did the right thing,” Mulder added. “Respecting the game is the most important part for me.”

Imagine seeing your messages, tracking your health, or even navigating in the dark, all without even lifting your phone. That future just got closer, thanks to Dubai-based startup XPANCEO.
The company has raised a whopping $250 million to bring its smart contact lens to life. With this, XPANCEO joins the elite club of billion-dollar startups, becoming one of the UAE’s latest tech unicorns.
From Sci-Fi to Real Life
XPANCEO isn’t building another gadget to strap to your face. Instead, they’re working on something straight out of science fiction: a contact lens that could one day replace your phone, watch, and glasses.
This tiny lens is packed with amazing features: it can show you digital information right in your field of vision, help monitor your health, and even offer night vision.
Yes, night vision!
And all of it happens through a lens thinner than a strand of human hair.
What Can the Lens Actually Do?
The idea is to create a wearable that blends into your daily life without being obvious. While tech giants are racing to make better AR glasses and headsets, XPANCEO is skipping that step and going smaller, sleeker, and more personal.
Some of the Lens’ Standout Abilities Include:
Showing AR visuals: Think navigation directions or notifications directly in front of your eyes.
Health monitoring: It can track things like eye pressure to help with conditions like glaucoma, and even analyse your tears for signs of stress, blood sugar levels, and vitamin deficiencies.
Vision enhancement: Lenses that help colorblind users, improve low-light visibility, or even zoom in on what you’re seeing.
Plus, it can do all this without needing bulky batteries or wires. A small external device powers the lens and handles the tech behind the scenes.
A Team That Mixes Science and Ambition
XPANCEO was founded by two people from very different worlds. A Ukrainian physicist, Dr. Valentyn S. Volkov, has spent his career working with advanced materials and optics.
The other, Roman Axelrod, is a seasoned entrepreneur with a passion for turning big ideas into real-world products.
They met in 2019, hit it off, and quickly realised they shared the same vision: to bring computing closer to the human body in the most natural way possible. Together, they built a world-class research team that has already created more than a dozen working lens prototypes.
What’s Next?
With fresh funding in the bank, XPANCEO plans to expand its team and start preparing the lens for real-world use. They’re eyeing big opportunities in healthcare, industrial safety, and defence, but they’re also thinking long-term: a day when the average person might ditch their phone and rely on a single, invisible device to stay connected.
The road ahead won’t be easy. Turning a high-tech lens into something comfortable, affordable, and safe for daily use will take time and testing. However, if XPANCEO pulls it off, it could mark the beginning of a whole new era, one where your eyes become your screen.
And maybe, just maybe, the smartphone would finally meet its match.

Meta Platforms Inc. has hired Ruoming Pang, a leading AI engineer from Apple Inc., with a compensation deal worth over $200 million.
Pang led Apple’s AI models team and is now part of Meta’s Superintelligence Lab. The package includes salary, bonuses, and equity, marking one of the largest ever for an engineer.
Pang holds a PhD from Princeton and worked at Google before Apple. At Google, he contributed to Lingvo and Zanzibar. At Apple, he led over 100 engineers and helped develop features like Genmoji, on-device AI notifications, and an upgraded Siri. He played a key role in Apple’s foundation models.
Meta’s offer includes long-term stock options tied to performance goals. It’s structured with a high base salary, big signing bonus, and equity to be earned over time. Apple chose not to counter the offer, which insiders said was higher than Tim Cook’s compensation.
Meta’s AI team also includes Nat Friedman, Daniel Gross, and Alexandr Wang. Meta took a 49% stake in Scale AI, where Wang was co-founder. This group is working on building superintelligent AI systems that perform as well or better than humans.
Meta has poached more than 10 researchers from OpenAI. Sam Altman, OpenAI’s CEO, said Meta’s signing bonuses reached $100 million. He said OpenAI’s culture keeps talent loyal but admitted Meta’s financial offers are tough to ignore.
Sources said Meta’s stock grants vest over longer-than-usual terms. Engineers must meet performance targets and stay long-term to earn full value. Meta’s strategy mixes high pay with loyalty incentives.
Meta’s AI hiring tactics are changing industry norms. Now, top AI engineers may earn more than many CEOs. With Apple, Google, OpenAI, and Meta all racing ahead, AI compensation has entered a new era.

For years, the word crypto in Pakistan has either been met with excitement or confusion. Many of us have heard of people making (and losing) lakhs through Bitcoin or dabbling in Ethereum from their mobile phones.
However, in the eyes of the Pakistani state, crypto was a grey area: neither fully legal nor properly banned. That may finally be changing.
PVARA: The Pakistan Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority has aimed to bring some order to the chaos of digital assets. Yes, Pakistan is officially stepping into the world of crypto regulation.
What is PVARA?
PVARA is a regulatory authority announced under the Finance Bill 2024. Think of it as Pakistan’s version of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) but focused specifically on virtual assets like crypto coins and the NFT economy.
The authority will operate under the Ministry of Finance and has been tasked with overseeing all crypto-related activities. This means if you’re trading Bitcoin, launching a local crypto exchange, or even creating NFTs, you’ll soon be doing it under clear rules.
In simple terms, cryptocurrency is no longer in the shadows.
This is An Important Step in the Digital Assets Economy
Pakistan has always sabotaged itself in this very beneficial economy of Crypto. Platforms got banned overnight. Young investors lost money to scams, and most people were left confused about whether crypto was even allowed. PVARA aims to fix that by:
Making licensing mandatory for exchanges and brokers
Protecting users and investors from fraud
Monitoring transactions to prevent illegal activity
Encouraging innovation in a safer ecosystem
It’s a win-win if done right. People can invest with confidence, and the government can ensure compliance and taxation.
But… Is This the Green Light?
Not entirely. While this move signals progress, it’s not the final chapter.
PVARA still needs to define how it will operate. What coins will be allowed? What kind of taxes will apply? Will crypto profits be treated like stock profits? These questions are still hanging in the air.
What we do know is that Pakistan is no longer ignoring crypto and is finally stepping into the ring to regulate it. This obviously is a very big deal.
If you’re already involved in crypto, this could mean safer platforms, clearer rules, and hopefully, fewer bans on popular apps like Binance or KuCoin.
If you’re new to the space, it might finally feel less risky to get started. You won’t need to hide your transactions or feel like you’re doing something illegal just by owning a few Dogecoins.
Most of all, if you’re an entrepreneur or developer, this could open doors to building Pakistan’s own crypto exchanges, NFT platforms, or even blockchain-based startups.

Apple has taken yet another significant step towards vertical integration in a bid to gain in-house control of its supply chain.
From modems to wireless connectivity, Steve Jobs’ brainchild has taken measures to minimise dependencies on external suppliers, but its latest silicon rollout is unprecedented.
In response to competitive rivals, e.g., Intel, advancing their chips, Apple is developing seven new in-house chips.
New Chips are in Store for iPhones, Apple TV, and HomePod Mini
A recent iOS 18 code leak confirmed that Apple is embarking on another impressive and expansive silicon rollout. Next-generation chips are coming for phones, watches, Macs, and home devices.
The A19 chip is designated for the iPhone 17 Air and iPhone 17e. The A19 Pro version for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. These updates add a significant upgrade to the latest version of the cell.
The M5 Chips cover a variety of gadgets: MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, iMac, iPad Pro, and Vision Pro. The M5 Pro version will be included in the MacBook Pro and Mac mini.
The S11 is for the Apple Watch Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3. The C2 modem is expected to feature in the iPhone 17e and the entire lineup for the iPhone 18 series.
Proxima, codename for the new Apple-designed WiFi and Bluetooth chip, will likely feature in the next Apple TV and HomePod mini models.
Apple is developing new chips.
Apple’s New Chips Have a Deeper Meaning
Apple’s discovery of seven new custom chips in iOS 18’s internal code leak is not only a technical reveal but a clear blueprint for the tech giant’s future strategy.
At its core, this signals Apple’s relentless push towards complete hardware-software integration across its entire ecosystem, reducing dependency on third-party suppliers and sharpening its competitive edge.
The A19 and A19 Pro chips set the stage for the next generation of iPhones, focusing on energy efficiency without compromising performance, while the M5 and M5 Pro chips will likely cement Apple Silicon’s leadership in laptop and desktop computing.

By now, you’ve probably heard the shocking news of Pakistani actress Humaira Asghar being found dead in her Karachi apartment, and her body is months old (estimated 6 to 8 months).
The actress passed away so many days ago that now her body is beyond recognition, her autopsy can’t seem to reveal her cause of death, and her skull and the back of her kneecaps (the parts that rot last) were starting to decompose. Yes, that is how long the actress’s dead body was neglected, and no one batted an eye.
No, this isn’t a fictional thriller but a real-life incident. A real rot that begs us to reconsider how hyper-individualistic and isolated we as a society have become?
How did we get so self-centred that no one in the industry noticed that an actress has disappeared for more than 6 months? Or did nobody care?
This is what Lollywood does to its own.
The Reality of Lollywood
Let me make one thing very clear: Humaira was not a struggling extra; she was not a local civilian. In fact, she was a National College of Arts graduate and a respected model and actress. She even starred in dramas and the reality show Tamasha Ghar that gave her a half-million-plus Instagram following.
Yet despite her recognition, she died alone, and her body was left undiscovered like stale food, along with discarded phone SIMs and months of unpaid rent. No friends came knocking, and no family checked in (they still don’t bother). She vanished, and it affected no one.
She was only discovered when someone cared about their rent payment and bill dues and knocked on her door.
To many, this horrific reality holds a mirror to our industry’s failure. We idolise celebrities, celebrate their glamour, yet remain silent on their plight.
Humairs Asghar
Fame at the Cost Of Human Connection
People think showbiz is glamorous, it’s just red carpets and fans. But it’s often an isolating, soul-sucking machine that chews up the vulnerable and spits them out when they’re no longer trending.
Humaira’s death should be the final straw, but deep down, we know it won’t be. The industry will post tributes, hashtags will trend for a day, and everyone will move on.
Where were these people when she was alive? Nowhere.
Even in death, Humaira was denied dignity. Her body remained unclaimed by her family. It was strangers who arranged her funeral as if she were a forgotten burden instead of a fellow human being.
And the entertainment industry has the audacity to call themselves a “fraternity?”
The Silent Pandemic No One Talks About: Mental Health in Media
The truth is, mental health in the entertainment industry is taboo. There’s no safety net, no support system, and no one dares speak about depression or loneliness because vulnerability is seen as weakness. And weakness is bad for PR.
There are no unions that check on actors after their prime. No helplines. Production houses provide no counselling sessions. Once you stop being relevant, you stop existing.
We celebrate stars, but the moment the spotlight dims, so does our empathy.
People in showbiz are expected to “keep it together”; look good, sound smart, stay positive. But behind the scenes, many are battling crippling anxiety, unstable income, online harassment, toxic work environments, and a deep sense of isolation.
When all of it finally breaks them, we act shocked.
So let’s stop pretending this is a one-off case. Humaira may have died alone, but she’s not the only one dying slowly in silence.

International Steels Limited (ISL), Pakistan’s largest flat steel manufacturer, proudly announces the successful commissioning of its 6.4 megawatt (MW) solar power project—a pivotal milestone in ISL’s sustainability journey and a testament to its commitment to responsible industrial growth.
Launched in 2024 and completed within a year, the project now supplies clean, renewable energy to ISL’s state-of-the-art manufacturing complex and corporate offices.
With an estimated annual energy generation exceeding 8 million kilowatt-hours (kWh), this initiative significantly reduces ISL’s reliance on conventional power sources, bolstering both energy resilience and environmental stewardship.
“This project reflects our long-standing belief in sustainable progress,” said CEO ISL, Mr. Samir M. Chinoy. “It is embedded in our broader vision of integrating climate consciousness into our operations, while creating lasting value for our stakeholders, our industry, and our country.”
Energy Impact: Estimated Annual Renewable Energy Generation – 8 Million kWh
The project’s generation capacity equates to the annual electricity usage of over 3,000 average Pakistani households, enabling ISL to meet a considerable share of its operational energy requirements through renewable sources. This transition not only minimises fossil fuel consumption but also strengthens ISL’s ability to manage energy costs and mitigate power-related disruptions.
The Sustainability Impact: Clean Energy, Clear Commitment
By adopting solar energy, ISL will avoid thousands of metric tons of CO₂ emissions annually, advancing its environmental performance while aligning with Pakistan’s broader climate goals. The move also reduces exposure to fossil fuel market volatility, ensuring greater operational stability.
Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals
This milestone further reinforces ISL’s alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically:
Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
Goal 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure
Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production
Goal 13: Climate Action
As Pakistan’s industrial landscape evolves, ISL remains at the forefront, demonstrating that economic viability and environmental responsibility can move together.
Leading with ESG Strategy and Innovation
The solar transition forms a core part of ISL’s Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy, underscoring its dedication to setting new standards in sustainable steel manufacturing. As ISL continues to supply quality flat steel across domestic and international markets, it also builds a foundation for a resilient, low-carbon future.
International Steels Limited is not only shaping steel, it is shaping progress.
