Israel Starts Ground Operation in Gaza, Kills 144 in Heavy Bombing

Israel Starts Ground Operation In Gaza, Kills 144 In Heavy Bombing

Since resuming its war on Gaza after the ceasefire, Israel has now launched a large ground assault in northern and southern Gaza. On the same day, Israeli airstrikes killed at least 144 people across the region.

Israeli jets bombed a tent camp sheltering displaced people in Al-Mawasi, Khan Younis. Medics said that the strike killed at least 36 people and injured over 100. Confirmed videos from the scene showed many bodies, some burning. Rescue teams rushed the injured and dead to a field hospital and the Nasser Medical Complex.

Earlier on Sunday, Israeli strikes killed 135 more people. Among them, 42 died in northern Gaza. Also, five journalists were killed when bombs hit their homes.

In the past week, Israel killed 464 Palestinians as it prepared for a wider invasion. Gaza’s Ministry of Health said the war, which started in October 2023, has killed 53,339 people and injured 121,034.

The Israeli army confirmed it started “Operation Gideon’s Chariots.” Regular and reserve troops under the Southern Command are leading the ground attack. The Air Force is backing them. The military said it hit over 670 locations in Gaza this week. It claimed all were “Hamas targets” above and below ground. But Israel faces accusations of hitting civilians, including families who had already fled.

Israeli attacks also forced three major hospitals out of service. On Sunday, the Indonesian Hospital in northern Gaza shut down after Israeli forces surrounded it in the early morning. Hospital director Marwan al-Sultan called the situation “catastrophic” and asked for help to protect medical staff.

Dr. Muhammad Abu Salmiya, director of al-Shifa Hospital, said the attack on the Indonesian Hospital is making it harder for patients to survive.

4.7 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Swat and Nearby Areas

4.7 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Swat and Nearby Areas

Swat and nearby villages felt a mild earthquake on Sunday, which startled many residents. The earthquake measured 4.7 on the Richter scale. After the tremors, emergency response teams confirmed there were no reports of damage.

The National Seismological Centre said the earthquake struck at a depth of 205 kilometres. Its epicenter was in the Hindukush Mountain Range, a region that often experiences seismic activity. This mountain range stretches through northern Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The tremors were felt across much of Swat, including Mingora and nearby areas. Although the quake caused fear among residents, authorities stated that no deaths or property damage were reported.

Earlier this month, on May 12, a similar earthquake hit Quetta. It registered 4.9 on the Richter scale. The National Seismic Monitoring Centre (NSMC) reported that the tremors reached Quetta and surrounding areas.

NSMC confirmed that the epicentre of the Quetta quake was located west of the city.

These recent tremors in Swat and Quetta highlight the ongoing seismic activity in Pakistan’s northern and western mountain regions. Authorities continue to monitor the areas closely. Despite the scare, both earthquakes caused no harm to people or property.

TikTok Adds New Feature to Help Users Build Better Screen Time Habits

TikTok Adds New Feature To Help Users Build Better Screen Time Habits

TikTok has introduced a fresh in-app feature aimed at assisting users in enhancing their screen time behaviour, particularly in the evening. The feature comes with guided meditation to assist individuals in relaxing before going to bed. It guides users to log off late evenings and ensures proper sleeping habits.

For teenagers under 18, the feature is automatically activated at 10 p.m. If they are still active on the app, TikTok cuts off the feed with a full-screen meditation invitation. This features soothing music and breathing exercises. If the user ignores the first invitation, TikTok sends a second message that directly prompts them to pause and rest.

Adult users have the option to use the feature by enabling the “sleep hours” feature in TikTok’s Screen Time setting. They can also select when they wish the reminders to begin every evening.

The new addition follows constant criticism of the impact of TikTok on mental health among young users. Authorities and lawmakers have denounced the role of the platform in leading to sleep problems, anxiety, and compulsive behaviour. District of Columbia Attorney General Brian Schwalb is among them and has expressed concern regarding TikTok’s influence. Due to this, TikTok is now introducing additional tools to help maintain safety and welfare on the platform.

This is in line with a broader movement in the tech industry. More apps and platforms are attempting to strike a healthier balance between keeping users hooked and preserving their well-being.

TikTok’s recent move is a step in the direction of empowering users to have more control of their screen time while continuing to use the app.

FBI Calls Palm Springs Fertility Clinic Explosion a Terrorist Attack

FBI Calls Palm Springs Fertility Clinic Explosion a Terrorist Attack

A deadly explosion struck near a fertility clinic in Palm Springs, California, on Saturday morning. The FBI called it an “intentional act of terrorism.” One person died and four others were injured. The blast also damaged nearby buildings.

The explosion happened shortly after 11:00 a.m. in the parking lot of the American Reproductive Centers (ARC) on North Indian Canyon Drive. FBI officials said a car exploded near the clinic.

FBI agent Akil Davis confirmed it was an intentional attack and classified it as terrorism. Investigators are still working to find out whether the attacker acted alone or had any connections, either inside or outside the U.S. Authorities have identified one person of interest, but they are not currently looking for any other suspects. They believe the person who died in the explosion may have carried out the attack, although they have not confirmed the individual’s identity yet.

Clinic Lab Safe as Witnesses Describe Chaos

In a statement shared on social media, the clinic said:
“…Our lab—which includes all eggs, embryos, and reproductive materials—is completely secure and intact.”
Scott MacFarlane (@MacFarlaneNews), May 17, 2025

Dr. Maher Abdallah, who runs the clinic, said, “Thank God today was a day without patients.” He added that while the consultation offices were damaged, the IVF lab and stored embryos were not harmed.

Witnesses shared disturbing details. People nearby said they heard a loud explosion, saw heavy smoke, and found debris across the road. Another witness said it “felt like a bomb went off.”

Several agencies, including the ATF, are now investigating. California Governor Gavin Newsom and U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi pledged full support. The blast has shaken Palm Springs, a city known for wealth, tourism, and healthcare. The attack also renewed focus on the ongoing debate over reproductive health services in the U.S., including IVF and abortion, which often face opposition from religious groups.

YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra Arrested for Allegedly Spying on India for Pakistan

YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra Arrested for Allegedly Spying on India for Pakistan

Travel YouTuber Jyoti Malhotra has been arrested in Hisar, Haryana, for allegedly being part of a spy network linked to Pakistan. She was accused of passing sensitive information to Pakistan’s intelligence agency, ISI. Malhotra has 377,000 subscribers on YouTube and 132,000 Instagram followers.

She was booked under Sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Official Secrets Act, 1923, and Section 152 of the BNS. The police sent her to five days of custody after she reportedly confessed. The Economic Offences Wing is currently investigating the case.

According to the FIR, Malhotra stayed in touch with her Pakistani handlers through apps like WhatsApp, Telegram, and Snapchat. She allegedly shared details that could harm India’s national security. The police stated that she travelled to Pakistan three times and posted videos from her visits on social media.

Officials say she came into contact with Ehsan-ur-Rahim, also known as Danish, a staffer at the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi, in 2023. He allegedly became her handler and introduced her to other ISI agents.

During questioning, Malhotra said she had been part of a delegation to Pakistan in 2023 and visited twice that year. She met operatives named Rana Shahbaz, Shakir, and Ali Ehwan. To avoid suspicion, she saved their numbers under false names like “Jatt Randhawa,” according to the police.

She also visited Bali and Indonesia with one of the operatives. Authorities believe she was part of a wider spy network operating in Punjab and Haryana. So far, six people have been arrested in the case.

Officials said Malhotra acted like a travel vlogger, but used her platform to project Pakistan in a positive light while ignoring terrorism from across the border. They claimed this was a tactic to influence Indian viewers. In one of her videos, she is seen telling a Pakistani woman, “Hindustani Pakistani Behen Behen.”

All six franchises have confirmed the availability of most of their international players, while also bringing in replacements for injured ones.

The team stated: “These high-calibre overseas players bring world-class experience from top T20 leagues, significantly boosting our campaign as we enter the decisive phase of the tournament,” adding that they are “committed to delivering top-tier cricket to fans worldwide.”

PSL Teams Revamp Squads

Lahore Qalandars have made squad changes due to injuries. Bhanuka Rajapaksa (Sri Lanka) replaces Tom Curran (England), who is out with an ankle injury. Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh) steps in for Daryl Mitchell (New Zealand), who injured his hand during a match against Karachi Kings.

Quetta Gladiators, currently topping the points table, have reinforced their lineup. Alongside Finn Allen (New Zealand) and Rilee Rossouw (South Africa), they have added Dinesh Chandimal and Avishka Fernando (Sri Lanka), and Gulbadin Naib (Afghanistan).

The PSL final will be played on 25 May at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. ICC Faces Criticism Over Double Standards After Jay Shah Supports Indian Forces

ICC Faces Criticism Over Double Standards After Jay Shah Supports Indian Forces

The International Cricket Council (ICC) is being widely criticised for showing double standards after its chairman, Jay Shah, openly supported the Indian armed forces during rising tensions with Pakistan. Shah is also the son of India’s Home Affairs Minister.

In an Instagram post after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, which killed 26 civilians, Shah wrote: “Our armed forces are our pride and no words are enough to express their valour and commitment in protecting our motherland and people. We salute our brave men and women in the armed forces who are shielding our nation from terrorism.”

India responded to the attack with Operation Sindoor, blaming Pakistan. The situation then escalated into missile, drone and artillery exchanges across the border. India also suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, which has added more tension between the two countries.

Shah’s public statement has been called out because the ICC earlier punished Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja for wearing messages promoting peace. Khawaja was not allowed to display a dove symbol or slogans like “Freedom is a human right” and “All lives are equal” during the 2023 Boxing Day Test. He was also told to remove a black armband. The dove symbol was rejected by the ICC, even though Cricket Australia supported it.

Critics say the ICC is not following its own rules of political neutrality. Veteran journalist Malcolm Conn wrote on X: “So, Usman Khawaja is banned by the ICC from putting a dove on his bat supporting peace in the Middle East, but ICC chairman Jay Shah can openly support the Indian military during conflict. Staggering hypocrisy!!!”

Is the Former Pakistan Cricket Captain and Prime Minister, Imran Khan, in a “Death Cell?” Sons Reveal in a Heartbreaking Interview

Is the Former Pakistan Cricket Captain and Prime Minister, Imran Khan, in a ‘Death Cell?” Sons Reveal in a Heartbreaking Interview
Is the Former Pakistan Cricket Captain and Prime Minister, Imran Khan, in a ‘Death Cell?” Sons Reveal in a Heartbreaking Interview

In a rare and emotionally charged interview, Suleman and Qasim Khan (sons of former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan) have broken their silence to shed light on their father’s harrowing imprisonment conditions. Speaking to social media influencer Mario Nawfal, the brothers expressed deep concern over their father’s inhumane treatment in custody in a ‘death cell’ typically reserved for terrorists.

Expressing frustration over the lack of progress through legal avenues, Qasim stated, “We’ve gone through every route that we thought would potentially get him out… It’s only getting worse.” The brothers are now calling for international pressure to secure their father’s release, emphasising the need for global attention to the alleged human rights violations.

A Plea for International Intervention

The interview marked the first public appearance of Suleman and Qasim Khan regarding their father’s incarceration. They revealed that despite a court order in November 2023 allowing weekly contact, they have only managed to speak with their father once every two or three months, often at odd hours and for limited durations.

The PTI has frequently complained about Imran’s facilities and has filed several petitions in the Islamabad High Court regarding the issue. On the other hand, the jail administration has refuted the claims.

However, the Islamabad High Court has intervened and has directed the authorities to allow Khan to speak with his sons and has granted him access to his personal physician. But such interventions are often undermined or ignored by jail authorities, suggesting a deeper rot in the chain of command and an erosion of judicial authority.

Moreover, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention has deemed Khan’s imprisonment a violation of international law, calling for his immediate release. Yet, even such global condemnation seems to fall on deaf ears domestically.

A Plea for International Intervention
A Plea for International Intervention

Solitary Confinement and Isolation

Imran Khan, detained since August 2023, has been held in Adiala Jail under charges including corruption and violations of the Anti-Terrorism Act. In a previous interview, Khan described his cell as a 7ft by 8ft space, under constant surveillance and devoid of basic human rights such as visitation and communication with the outside world.

Further compounding concerns, Khan’s ex-wife Jemima Goldsmith also reported that since September 10, 2024, all visits have been halted and weekly phone calls to their sons have been discontinued. She also alleged that electricity in his cell has been cut off, leaving him in complete darkness and isolation.

A ‘Death Cell’ for a Political Prisoner?

Khan himself, in a rare interview earlier this year, described his detention as akin to being in a “death cell for terrorists.” It’s a chilling phrase, and one that has sparked outrage among his supporters and alarm among international observers.

His sons support this characterisation, describing the conditions as “designed to break him.” “He’s being mentally tortured,” Suleman said. “If this were happening anywhere else in the world, there would be an uproar. But the silence is deafening.”

One cannot help but ask: Is this justice or vengeance masquerading as due process?

More than a Political Battle

Imran Khan’s incarceration first began as a political manoeuvre, but it is rapidly evolving into a moral crisis. His sons plea is not just for their father’s freedom, but for the restoration of justice in Pakistan.

And if the world continues to look away, it won’t just be Imran Khan left in the darkness — it will be the ideals of democracy and justice themselves.

As Karachi Enters the Heatwave, Some Suffer More than Others

As Karachi Enters the Heatwave, Some Suffer More than Others
As Karachi Enters the Heatwave, Some Suffer More than Others

As Karachi heads into yet another sweltering heatwave, the city seems to have learned little from the tragedies of the past. The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted that daytime temperatures in Karachi are expected to soar above 40°C. This will obviously result in high humidity levels, which are expected to hover around 50% during the day and drop to 25% in the evening.

These rising mercury levels will likely impact our everyday lives. But like many other issues, heat also does not affect all of us the same way. Those on the lowest rungs of the socioeconomic ladder always bare more burn of Karachi heatwave.

Who Pays the Price? The Poor, as Always

There is no doubt that Karachites are god’s strongest soldiers but even here, there is layers to the suffering. Some suffering more than others.

The city’s elite, comfortably insulated in air-conditioned homes and offices, may experience nothing more than mild discomfort or maybe some suffering when they step outside in their vehicles. On the other hand, the brunt is disproportionately borne by the city’s most vulnerable populations. Daily wage laborers, who often work in open and unshaded environments face more heightened risks of heatstroke and dehydration. The elderly and children being equally at risk. Heat can also increase the risk of injuries in workers as it may result in sweaty palms, fogged-up safety glasses, and dizziness”, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“There is neither water nor electricity in our house, where does one go?” asked Dilshad, a domestic help working in Karachi. “We are the labour class, we have to get out. It’s so hot, there are no trees or even a place where one can sit [outside].” Dilshad takes a Qingqi rickshaw daily to reach her places of work and “it’s so cramped inside”, making it even more difficult to cope with the heat.

Furthermore, the urban heat island effect, intensified by Karachi’s concrete infrastructure and sparse tree cover (in only 5% of the city) is a silent contributor to rising temperatures. Frequent power outages (sometimes lasting up to 16 hours in certain areas) render fans and air conditioning units useless when they’re needed most. With limited access to clean drinking water, and barely any green spaces to mitigate the heat, the city’s poor are essentially being asked to survive the impossible.

A City Built to Burn

Karachi’s urban design is part of the problem. With less than 5% of the city covered in tree canopy, the urban heat island effect is brutal. Concrete jungles, high-rise buildings, and zero attention to environmental sustainability have turned Karachi into a furnace during summer months.

Despite repeated heatwaves over the past decade, including the devastating 2015 wave that killed around 2,000 people (as per Wikipedia), there has been no serious urban planning effort to reduce exposure or build resilience.

“Karachi, being a metropolis city, has failed to build a decent transport infrastructure to facilitate the movement. People spend hours during their commute in 40-degree temperatures, the majority of whom use personal bikes and public transport which exposes them to extreme heat,” said Atoofa Samo, a research associate at the Karachi Urban Lab, working on cooling infrastructure in the city.

A volunteer showers a woman with water during a heatwave in Karachi
A volunteer showers a woman with water during a heatwave in Karachi

Government “Advice” Isn’t Enough

While authorities have issued advisories urging residents to stay indoors during peak heat hours and stay hydrated, these recommendations often fall short for those without the luxury of choice. For many, staying indoors means enduring sweltering conditions without electricity or water. For others, particularly laborers, missing a day’s work isn’t a viable option.

Instead of empty advisories, we need action. How about shaded bus stops, functioning water coolers in public areas and designated heat shelters in every town and neighborhood?

Experts also advocate for both immediate and long-term interventions. Short-term measures can include establishing heat relief centers equipped with water and cooling facilities. This will help ensure uninterrupted power supply during peak heat hours. Long-term strategies can necessitate urban reforestation, investment in resilient infrastructure and comprehensive climate adaptation policies.

Karachi’s heatwaves are not just natural disasters. They are man-made crises fueled by neglect, inequality and poor governance.

Authorities need to look beyond emergency responses and think long term. Taking heatwaves seriously is important, but addressing sustained chronic heat exposure is particularly critical. The effect is compounded in cities like Karachi by deteriorating infrastructure and limited access to basic necessities, which reduces people’s ability to cope with heat.

Babar Azam Reveals His Dream T20I World XI

mohsin-naqvi-opens-up-about-babar-azam-replacement-who-should-be-captain-younis-khan-supports-babar-azam

When you ask Babar Azam to pick a dream T20I XI, you know you’re in for something special. The Peshawar Zalmi skipper — and arguably Pakistan’s finest modern batter — recently dropped his ideal playing XI on the Off Topic Zalmi Podcast.

But there was a catch: only two players per country were allowed. That made things very interesting.

Two Pakistani Players in the List

First things first, yes — Mohammad Rizwan is in the team. Babar didn’t hesitate to include his longtime friend and opening partner, and honestly, would you expect anything less?

The chemistry between the two at the top of the order has been one of Pakistan’s strongest assets in T20Is over the years. And here’s the kicker: Rizwan isn’t the only Pakistani on the list.

While most expected Babar to pick himself, he humbly stepped aside and instead picked Fakhar Zaman, Pakistan’s explosive left-hander who can change a game in a few overs.

So that’s Rizwan and Fakhar representing the Green Shirts. Balance? Check. Power? Double check.

Rest of the Team

From across the border, Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav made the cut — and rightfully so.

Rohit brings calmness, experience, and swagger at the top, while SKY’s unorthodox strokeplay and fearless approach make him a nightmare for bowlers.

You can’t build a T20 XI without including someone like Jos Buttler. The former England captain is one of the most dangerous white-ball players in the world, and Babar knows it.

To balance it out, he chose Mark Wood — the express pacer who can rattle any batter with raw pace and sharp bounce.

From South Africa, Babar selected David Miller, the ultimate finisher, and Marco Jansen, the tall, lanky left-arm seamer who also packs a punch with the bat.

Miller’s ability to hold his nerve in crunch situations makes him a must-have, while Jansen’s versatility as a bowling all-rounder adds crucial depth to the squad.

Two Aussies — Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc — made the cut, and you can’t really argue. Starc brings toe-crushing yorkers, while Cummins offers pace, bounce, and leadership. Together, they can run through any batting order on their day.

No surprises here: Rashid Khan rounds off the XI. He’s been the poster boy of Afghan cricket and arguably the best T20 spinner in the world.

Whether it’s the Powerplay, middle overs, or death, Rashid can do it all — and Babar, having faced him plenty of times, clearly knows his value.

The World T20I XI of Babar Azam

Here’s Babar Azam’s Dream T20I XI:

  1. Rohit Sharma (India)

  2. Mohammad Rizwan (Pakistan)

  3. Fakhar Zaman (Pakistan)

  4. Suryakumar Yadav (India)

  5. Jos Buttler (England)

  6. David Miller (South Africa)

  7. Marco Jansen (South Africa)

  8. Rashid Khan (Afghanistan)

  9. Pat Cummins (Australia)

  10. Mitchell Starc (Australia)

  11. Mark Wood (England)

President Zardari, PM Shehbaz Praise Armed Forces on Youm-e-Tashakkur

President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif observed Youm-e-Tashakkur on Friday, thanking Allah for the success of Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos and honouring the armed forces.

President Zardari said Pakistan will never compromise on sovereignty, territorial integrity, or core national interests. “Any aggression against the homeland will be met with full force,” he said.

Referring to Pakistan’s response to Indian aggression, he said, “It is a great moment for us to celebrate the success of Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos in response to Indian unprovoked aggression. I am grateful to Almighty Allah for blessing us with victory in this critical hour.” He also praised the armed forces, saying, “This victory not only belongs to Pakistan’s armed forces but also to the entire Pakistani nation, who stood like Bunyan-um-Marsoos (fortified wall) against the enemy aggression.”

“I am proud of the armed forces who responded to Indian provocation with precision, professionalism, and strength. I am glad that the world witnessed and acknowledged Pakistan’s patience and restraint, as well as the operational effectiveness that compelled the enemy to cease its aggression. We stood firm. We stood united. And we emerged victorious with dignity,” he added.

He also stressed Pakistan’s peaceful intent, stating, “Pakistan is a peace-loving country and does not harbour aggressive design against any country. However, let there be no doubt, Pakistan will never compromise… Any aggression… will be met with full force.”

On the Indus Water Treaty, he said, “We reject any unilateral suspension… Pakistan will utilise all elements of national power to protect its water rights at all costs.”

“To our brave soldiers… we offer them our eternal gratitude,” he remarked.

“As President… I affirm… we will always stand shoulder to shoulder with our armed forces… May Allah bless our nation. A’ameen. Pakistan Paindabad!”

PM Shehbaz called the operation Marka-e-Haq. He said India’s attack killed innocent citizens, and Pakistan had to respond. “In just a few hours, an enemy which was many times bigger came to its knees… planes which were the pride of India turned into ashes…”

He praised the armed forces for their “befitting reply” and said their efforts wrote “a golden chapter” in history. “Our Shaheens hammered the enemy,” he said.

“Our operation was against… animosity against humanity, aggression, religious extremism and bias. This is the success of our honour and principles… of the armed forces and the entire nation.”

He thanked General Asim Munir for his leadership, Air Chief Zaheer Babar and “his Shaheens”, Naval Chief Admiral Naveed Ashraf and all political leaders for showing unity.

From Islamophobic Narrative to Political Alliance with Middle East: Trump’s Diplomatic Shift

From Islamophobic Narrative to Engagement with Muslim Nations: Trump Takes a Diplomatic U-Turn
From Islamophobic Narrative to Engagement with Muslim Nations: Trump Takes a Diplomatic U-Turn

Today, Donald Trump is seen smiling and waving in the Gulf states while shaking hands with Emirati officials and praising the “modernity” of the UAE. Any Muslim around the world will see how fictional this seems; almost strange and weirdly suspicious. This is the same man who once called for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States.” The same president who has built his entire political career out of “Islamophobia.” The one who blatantly made fun of Muslim women wearing Burqas during the 2015 election campaign, saying they didn’t need makeup underneath and that they don’t wish to be free.

Now, after years of vilifying Muslims both at home and abroad, he wants to have a good relationship with the Middle East? Sounds like a diplomatic shift? Let’s take a closer look at it.

A Presidency Built on Islamophobia

From the very start of his political career, Trump treated Muslims not as constituents but as threats. His campaign was built on fearmongering.

Trump will bring an administration that is entirely devoid of Muslim Americans and at minimum, individuals without genuine reach into or backing from Muslim Americans. His campaign lacked any bona fide Muslim American involvement, and the Trump administration will likely reflect that.

– Trump’s 2016 Election Campaign

Back in 2015, Trump joked that women who wear burqas look better because “they don’t have to wear makeup.” In another moment, he suggested mosques should be surveilled and that American Muslims were celebrating 9/11 (an outright lie that was widely debunked). His infamous “Muslim ban” targeted citizens from several Muslim-majority countries, tore families apart and told millions of Muslims that their very identity made them un-American.

Instead of “Islam is peace.” Trump declared that “Islam hates us.” He embraced the hateful language of Quran-burning rallies, anti-mosque protests and perhaps most violently, the ugly underbelly that is the comment sections of news articles.

The media, civil society organisations and global observers criticised Trump for fueling Islamophobia and promoting divisive policies. Al Jazeera even labelled him the “Islamophobia President” after his 2016 election win. His policies were seen not only as discriminatory but also as damaging to America’s standing in the Muslim world.

Trump’s Diplomatic Shift: A Pivotal Point, But Why?

Fast forward to 2025, and Trump’s recent Gulf visit paints a strikingly different picture.

As reported by Al Jazeera and The Guardian, Trump hailed the “strengthened relations” with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and emphasised mutual economic and strategic interests. Speaking in Abu Dhabi, he praised the UAE’s modernisation efforts and expressed admiration for the region’s economic dynamism. The words contrasted sharply with his earlier portrayals of the Muslim world as regressive and threatening.

This transformation is not without context, though.

Trump now has enduring political ambitions and global business interests that seem to be making him keen on repositioning himself on the international stage. Analysts suggest that economic interests, particularly Trump Organisation projects and potential investments in Gulf states, may be driving this shift. Or maybe the need to make a good impression followingol the ongoing backlash due to tariffs.

Political Play in the Middle East

Trump’s evolving posture also reflects a broader shift in U.S. foreign policy. A policy that prefers strategic and economic calculations.

As Foreign Affairs noted, Trump’s current Middle East approach is grounded in transactional diplomacy. While his administration maintained strong ties with authoritarian regimes like Saudi Arabia and the UAE, it showed little regard for human rights issues and genocide funding in similar regions.

It’s all just geopolitical alliance and arms deals; nothing more.

Political Play in the Middle East

Yet, the implications of Trump’s diplomatic U-turn are significant. It reflects a broader trend of depoliticising religious identity in international relations and underscores the enduring importance of engagement over exclusion. Lastly, one thing is clear: his relationship with the Muslim world has shifted from confrontation to cooperation. Albeit of his own terms and personal ideology.
